Young at ART BY JAN SOMERFELD Learning something new can be a challenge at any age. For some, that is an exciting opportunity. For others, moving beyond routine makes them uncomfortable and tests their self-confidence. But opportunity can outweigh risk, and as the old saying goes, “nothing ventured, nothing gained.” A year ago, Ruth Hellenbrand, programs manager at the North/Eastside Senior Coalition (NESCO), offered an Artful Aging class and 12

students responded. The weekly class provided opportunities to explore different mediums of art and identify the one best suited for each student while taking into account their stage in life and interests. “I entered the class with no experience and a lot of doubt as to my art talent,” explains Sharon, a recent retiree. “The Artful Aging class helped build my self-confidence and gave me a strong desire to explore the art world more.” Sharon encour-

ages others to experience what they can do just by giving themselves the chance. “If I never took this class, I would not have realized this.” Ruth proposed the class to use creative aging to motivate older adults to learn, make, and share art in a socially engaging setting. She promoted the class to seniors 60+ from different backgrounds and cultures. Ruth explains, “The focus was on encouraging people who enjoy art but are isolated or have

The Dane County Agency on Aging provided funding through a Leck Grant. The idea came from a program developed by Amy Conover Cavi when she was artist in residence at a local memory care facility. Amy instructed the NESCO class, gently encouraging the students and providing them with the tools to complete their projects. Amy dubbed the group “young at art.” The first assignment was to select a personal item and share its significance with the class. Amy taught students different mediums to reproduce each item, and paired them during class to foster discussions and support for one another, particularly relating to their cultural differences and similarities.

The students didn’t want the class to end. “They were all working toward the same goal,” Ruth explains. “They cheered each other on and boosted each other’s self-esteem. They took an interest in each other because their work was so personal and there was always a story to be shared.” The class felt a strong sense of belonging, purpose, and pride, and as one student, Dana, recently told Ruth, “I forgot to tell you, this class changed my life.” But Irma may have expressed it best. “I see it now—art is from the heart. It’s not about who we are or what we do. We connect through the heart.” The young at art students wanted to continue and Ruth had a growing list of new prospects. Through the generosity of two private donations, NESCO held a second Artful Aging class in February. Twelve eager students responded and three returning students served as mentors.

Roberto explains, “Some drawings are much harder than others, but combining the colors is my favorite part of creating art.” Amy worked with the students to discover the best medium for each individual. At the last class in May, students pondered their selections for display. The Madison Lakeview Library hosted the opening art show and reception in early June followed by a second show at the Warner Park Community Recreation Center. Ruth is planning a third Artful Aging class in response to Olga’s request, “Senorita, more classes please.” Photographs provided by NESCO.

Amy notes the new class had a “different cultural flavor,” and it was important to help the students get to know one another. Every two seconds someone becomes a victim of identity theft, the fastest-growing crime in the United States. Identity theft is the misuse of another person’s personal information to fraudulently obtain goods and services. By acquiring just a small amount of personal information, identity thieves can destroy a person’s financial reputation and cause endless stress on that person and their family.

While identity theft comes in many shapes and sizes, the most wellknown form is financial identity theft. Financial identity theft refers to anything affecting your financial status or credit score, such as unexpected purchases on your existing accounts or loans and lines of credit opened in your name. Child identity theft, where the identity of a minor is stolen and misused,

is the fastest-growing type of identity theft. It also creates the most sustained damage because it often goes undetected until the minor is old enough to attempt to take out loans or apply for jobs using their Social Security number. Medical identity theft is the misuse of insurance information to obtain medical services. It could involve alterations to treatment services and

AGING & CAREGIVER RESOURCES | 17 medical records. Finally, criminal identity theft is committed by individuals who are hiding from law enforcement. Identity thieves use various methods, both high- and low-tech, to get their hands on your personal information. Some of the low-tech methods to collect personal information include dumpster diving (literally digging through the trash) for sensitive documents and mail. Other low-tech methods involve stealing wallets, purses, or phones or finding these lost items. Any of these items is a treasure trove of information for an identity thief.

••••••• Data breaches, a high-tech version of identity theft, allow thieves to compromise potentially millions of records at once. Pop-ups on your computer, fraudulent texts asking you to click on a link, and phone calls requesting personal information are all examples of high-tech phishing scams. Skimming devices overlaid on point-of-sale terminals or installed in gas pumps are yet another high-tech threat to your personal information. These devices are able to capture the account information from your credit or debit card. If you become a victim of identity theft, report the fraud immediately. Also, file a report with your local police department, the Federal Trade Commission, and Wisconsin’s Bu-

reau of Consumer Protection to cover all of your bases. Help prevent identity theft by implementing a few simple safeguards. Register your phone number with the Do Not Call Registry to limit unwanted telemarketing calls, limit junk mail by opting out of preapproved credit card and insurance offers, shred anything containing personally identifiable information, and limit what you carry in your wallet or purse (like Social Security cards and passports). Practice safe internet habits, such as using strong passwords and security software, keeping your browser and operating systems up to date, and paying attention to security warnings. Check your credit report regularly for fraud. You are entitled to one free credit report a year, so take advantage of it. Finally, place a fraud alert or security freeze on your credit report to prevent identity theft. Dementia-Friendly Communities

WITH MY SISTER’S KITCHEN AND OTHERS BY YVETTE FERRIS To caregivers and dementia patients’ loved ones, dementia-friendly community is an often-unknown phrase that could greet them with the promise of a sunrise after a long, dark night. Finding businesses who welcome our loved ones with open arms and minds is often more challenging than anticipated. For example, finding servers willing to repeat the daily specials over and over again with fewer words and more patience or a store whose glaring displays and loud sounds don’t put

our loved ones into sensory overload can be a grand challenge. Thanks to the dementia-friendly community program initiated by Joy Schmidt in Dane County, those welcoming spots are more present than ever. Originally with the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Alliance of Wisconsin (ADAW) and now with the Aging & Disability Resource Center (ADRC), Joy says the need for dementia-friendly communities is only growing. According to the State of

Wisconsin Department of Health Services, “Dane County currently has approximately 7,000 living with dementia. That number is expected to rise to over 17,000 by 2040.” Though dementia-friendly community training is available at a number of churches, nonprofits, and other organizations, local businesses are also participating. After a brief 30- to 45-minute presentation, owners and their employees are trained in how to help those with dementia and

ALZHEIMER’S & DEMENTIA | 25 their caregivers. Once trained, these businesses are given a window cling with the purple angel icon, informing the public they are part of the dementia-friendly movement. Businesses receiving training range from having as few as two employees to much larger companies, such as Old National Bank branches across the county; Care Wisconsin, which covers the state; and Walgreens, who is looking for ways to offer similar training to all its employees nationwide. Diane Mikelbank, director of the Monona Senior Center, says, “The dementia-friendly community initiative helps to give a quality of life for people living with dementia and for their friends and family.” This is done by helping waiters, cashiers, and others to take the time to help with choices so it’s not so overwhelming for those with dementia to be out in public. Diane adds, “While the Senior Center enhances the lives of older adults, so does a dementiafriendly community. Monona is lucky because there is a local group working on a letter-writing campaign to local businesses regarding the brief dementia-friendly community training.” Diane also credits the Monona City Council for their support and being a part of their proactive team for this initiative. The need for communities to understand and welcome those with dementia into local businesses is not only for the benefit of the person with dementia, but also holds value for the family members and caregivers. Diane explains, “Caregivers will stop taking their loved ones out if it gets too frustrating. If we can make other businesses aware by keeping interactions simpler for those with dementia, all involved will have a greater tendency to socialize in the community.”

Having had a grandmother with dementia, sisters Shelly Nelson and Karen Grove, who own and operate My Sister’s Kitchen café in Middleton, concur. They were approached by the ADAW to take part in the dementia-friendly community training. Shelly says most who work at the restaurant have had some acquaintance to a person with dementia. As Shelly says, “It’s our goal to make all of our patrons safe and comfortable while they’re out of their home. Caregivers can feel safe to bring their family members in to receive the respect and service they deserve.” Joy Schmidt feels optimistic about the work being accomplished in Madison and surrounding communities. “It’s been truly amazing to see all the growth in awareness as everyone works together across the community—from libraries, senior centers, first responders, local hospitals, businesses, Alzheimer’s agencies, municipalities, churches, museums, and many volunteers.” Joy has seen many successes in expanding area businesses’ and residents’ awareness of dementia, and how to become a more welcoming community for those with the disease and their caregivers. These include Walgreen’s Shop in their Shoes campaign; the Capitol Square museums’ participation in SPARK!, a program for individuals with early memory loss; and a program with former Governor Marty Schreiber and many local businesses.

Others include forgetting important dates or events; asking for the same information over and over; and relying on memory aides, such as reminder notes or

electronic devices, or family members for things they used to handle on their own. What’s typical? Sometimes forgetting names or appointments, but remembering them later.

6. NEW PROBLEMS WITH WORDS

IN SPEAKING OR WRITING. People with Alzheimer’s may have trouble following or joining a conversation. They may stop in the middle of a conversation and have no idea how to continue or they may repeat themselves. They may struggle with vocabulary, have problems finding the right word, or call things by the wrong name, such as calling a watch a “hand clock.” What’s typical? Sometimes having trouble finding the right word.

DIFFICULTY COMPLETING FAMILIAR TASKS AT HOME, AT WORK, OR AT LEISURE. People with Alzheimer’s often find it hard to complete daily tasks. Sometimes people may have trouble driving to a familiar location, managing a budget at work, or remembering the rules of a favorite game. What’s typical? Occasionally needing help to use the settings on a microwave or recording a television show. CONFUSION WITH TIME OR PLACE. People with Alzheimer’s can lose track of dates, seasons, and the passage of time. They may have trouble understanding something if it‘s not happening immediately. Sometimes they may forget where they are or how they got there. What’s typical? Getting confused about the day of the week but figuring it out later.

5. TROUBLE UNDERSTANDING VISUAL IMAGES AND SPATIAL RELATIONSHIPS. For some people, having vision problems is a sign of Alzheimer’s. They may have difficulty reading, judging distance, and determining color or contrast. In terms of perception, they may pass a mirror and think someone else is in the room. They may not recognize their own reflection. What’s typical? Vision changes related to cataracts.

7. MISPLACING THINGS AND LOSING THE ABILITY TO RETRACE STEPS. A person with Alzheimer’s disease may put things in unusual places. They may lose things and be unable to go back over their steps to find them again. Sometimes they may accuse others of stealing. This may occur more frequently over time. What’s typical? Misplacing things from time to time, such as a pair of glasses or the remote control.

DECREASED OR POOR JUDGMENT. People with Alzheimer’s may experience changes in judgment or decision-making. For example, they may use poor judgment when dealing with money, giving large amounts to telemarketers. They may pay less attention to grooming or keeping

themselves clean. What’s typical? Making a bad decision once in a while.

WITHDRAWAL FROM WORK OR SOCIAL ACTIVITIES. A person with Alzheimer’s may start to remove themselves from hobbies, social activities, work projects, or sports. They may have trouble keeping up with a favorite sports team or remembering how to complete a favorite hobby. They may also avoid being social because of the changes they have experienced. What’s typical? Sometimes feeling weary of work, family, and social obligations.

CHANGES IN MOOD AND PERSONALITY. The mood and personalities of people with Alzheimer’s can change. They can become confused, suspicious, depressed, fearful, or anxious. They may be easily upset at home, at work, with friends, or in places where they are out of their comfort zone. What’s typical? Developing very specific ways of doing things and becoming irritable when a routine is disrupted. D.H. Lawrence was ahead of his time when he celebrated aging with these words. Following his call for a new perspective on aging and the end of life, many in the hospice and palliative care communities, as well as in the deathcare industry, are searching for better ways to end our days.

A new cultural paradigm is arising, ripe with personal meaning, conscious choices, and transcendent rituals that hope to bring us to our final days with ease and a sense of beauty and completeness. Many seniors are finding they want more control over their final days. They want a more natural and joyful ending that brings closure without all the medical intervention, hospitalization, and emergency room visits, and even something more than the cold and often impersonal funeral and burial traditions that have persisted for decades. They want creative options. Families, too, are looking for ways to add meaning and to personal-

ize funeral celebrations—everything from video legacies and balloon and lantern releases to home funerals and green burials. Many have found the services of an end-of-life midwife, or death doula, offer just the kind of coaching and family support that is needed as the end-of-life process evolves. Hospice has built a strong support system for dying ones and their families, providing comfort medications, and adding spiritual and volunteer involvements that help to calm and ground families in the process. Still, many are finding there are ways that hospice cannot fulfill the ongoing

Death doulas are an innovative and evolving field in deathcare. One pioneer in the industry is Henry FerskoWeiss, former hospice social worker in New York City, who found that hospice provided some, but not all of what families need at end of life. In 2003, he proposed using the birth coach/birth doula model of care for end of life, and called the role a death doula. His organization, INELDA (International End of Life Doula Association), trains and certifies death doulas around the world. His goal is to “help the dying to find meaning in their life, express that meaning in powerful and beautiful legacies, and plan for the final days.” Death doulas guide and support people through the dying process.

While you may be initially inclined to name a family member or friend as the fiduciary in your will or trust, you may want to consider using a corporate trustee. Corporate trustees are experienced and trained in administrating trusts and estates. With their

expertise, they are able to act more efficiently when handling fiduciary matters. A trust officer has procedures in place to ensure that issues are handled in an appropriate and timely manner, and that assets are safeguarded and invested properly. This is quite distinct from when a family member or friend is

named as the nominated fiduciary in a will or in a trust because they have no experience and can be overwhelmed by the duties and responsibilities. A corporate fiduciary is subject to many levels of regulation and oversight from internal auditors to out-

As a result, malfeasance and loss are less likely than if Uncle Joe was in charge. A corporate fiduciary must be objective and impartial, administering the will or trust as written. Where an individual fiduciary might be personally pressured by a beneficiary, the professional fiduciary is seasoned in not succumbing to pressure from beneficiaries, avoiding conflicts of interest.

••••••• Corporate trustees are experienced and trained in administrating trusts and estates. With their expertise, they are able to act more efficiently when handling fiduciary matters.

••••••• It isn’t uncommon that a child who is acting as trustee has personal interest in the trust. Corporate fiduciaries have a network of professionals, such as attorneys or accountants, from whom they can get answers to difficult questions that come up during administration.

Recordkeeping is another responsibility of the fiduciary. Trusts are often required to file annual court reports or to provide accountings to beneficiaries. Individuals who serve as trustees may not have the ability to keep or provide such reports. However, for a corporate fiduciary, required trust reporting is a standard part of trust administration. Continuity is yet another reason to consider a professional fiduciary over a family member or friend. When a corporate fiduciary is named, the trust or estate is always being administered and monitored. And there is no need to go to court to change trustees as opposed to when an individual trustee is unable or unwilling to act. Last but not least, family harmony is a key reason to name a corporate fiduciary since a fiduciary must often make tough choices that may not be popular with beneficiaries. Stiffness getting out of bed in the morning. Waking up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. Weight gain. Diabetes. Thinning hair due to an underactive thyroid. Memory loss. Senility. High blood pressure. New lumps or growths on the skin. A personal pharmacy in your home. You may be experiencing one or more of these things as you get older, and if you own an aging dog or cat, they may be experiencing them, too. Studies show that by the age of 6 (about 40 in human years), a third of all cats have some arthritis. By the time a cat is 12 (the equivalent of a 60-year-old person), there is a

90 percent chance of arthritis. Dogs develop arthritis at about the same rate, although large breeds, working breeds, and overweight dogs will start to show stiffness sooner than small dogs. Like people, some cats and dogs are great at regulating how much they eat, and keep a slim figure. But more commonly, dogs and cats eat what is put in front of them, even if they arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hungry. Which means that well over 50 percent of dogs and cats are overweight. As with people, this predisposes them to arthritis, diabetes (at least with cats), heart disease, and a shorter life span.

Older female dogs that have been spayed (equivalent to having a hysterectomy or going through menopause in women) are at increased risk for developing urinary incontinence. They might leak a little if they laugh or cough, but more often they leak when they are relaxed and sleeping. Both cats and dogs can develop kidney failure, which causes an increase in drinking, leading to more frequent urination. Endocrine diseases, such as an underactive thyroid gland, are more common in older dogs. These dogs have similar signs to human symptoms: thin hair, weight gain,

GENERAL | 45 sluggishness, and slow heart rate. Cats, on the other hand, are more likely to develop hyperthyroidism— an overactive thyroid gland. These cats will be ravenously hungry, but lose weight. They may also have increased vomiting or diarrhea, increased shedding, and, oddly, vocalize in the middle of the night.

please don’t share your medications with your pet! There are many different options for arthritis pain: nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, glucosamine or other nutraceutical supplements, chiropractic adjustments, and acupuncture. There are even prescription diets designed for pets with arthritis.

Older pets, particularly those reaching the equivalent of 80- to 90-yearold people (16-plus years in pet years) will have cognitive decline. They may forget which side of the door opens to go outside, wander aimlessly outside or around the house, stare blankly at a wall, or even have sundowners syndrome. This is when the pet has more confusion and anxiety or agitation in the early to late evening. Dogs may have difficulty sleeping and be pacing and whining all night long.

It’s difficult to teach a dog Kegel exercises, but there are prescription medications that can control incontinence. Thyroid medications are given daily to either supplement or prevent formation of thyroid hormone. A diagnosis of diabetes means a diet change and daily insulin injections. Surgery can be per-

Although blood pressure cuffs are used to determine blood pressure in cats and dogs, the cuff is often placed on the tail, rather than the upper arm. Fatty tumors, or lipomas, are benign growths under the skin. They are very common in dogs and can get quite extensive in size. Sebaceous adenomas (better known as moles), cysts, and skin tags all occur in both pets and their owners. Not all growths are benign, however. There are a number of malignant cancers that can be found in the skin or elsewhere in and on the body, so don’t ignore a lump or growth on you or your pet. The good news is that all of these conditions we share with our pets can be treated or managed. But

••••••• formed to remove growths. Small adenomas and skin tags can be frozen off. Senility, as in humans, can be hard to manage. Working on memory and learning skills with puzzles, exercise, and daily interactions can help. There are nutraceuticals and prescription foods that contain antioxidants and other ingredients to improve cognition. There are many medications that can be used to help with anxiety and induce sleep. Older people should see their physician more frequently, have screening tests, get blood pressure checked, and stay active. The same applies for older pets. Make that veterinary appointment for your cat or dog now. Ask for senior bloodwork to be run, including a urinalysis and a blood-pressure check. Aging is not a disease, and if a problem is discovered, early intervention and treatment may be able to greatly

improve the quality and quantity of your pet’s life. We often dwell on all the negative aspects of aging, but there are some great things about getting older, like becoming smarter and wiser, and they apply to our pets, too. How many people have adopted a new puppy so that their older dog can train it? Think about kittens that play so hard that they collapse and pant. Older cats know that one good chase after the feather toy is sufficient. We can play and have a good time without overdoing it. With the kids out of the house, we are finally able to sit in our comfy chair and watch television…if our pets haven’t beaten us to it. We can enjoy the grandkids and still be happy they go home at night. Older pets likely feel the same way about your grandkids! Enjoy the golden years of your pet, but remember that, like you, they may not be able to walk quite as far, may need to be taken out to the bathroom a little more frequently, and may need your help remembering to take their medications on time. But they’re worth it.

Much More than

Moving or Downsizing BY MARIANNE GARITI

I often hear the same two questions: “So you move people?” and “You help seniors downsize?” I think carefully before answering because it’s yes to both, but it’s also so much more than that. For me and my staff, it’s about our passion to help families know the state of mind they’re in when trying to either move or downsize their loved ones.

It’s not a job in the regular sense. It’s about caring and understanding. It’s about knowing what type of stress is created and can result from leaving a home that one has lived in for many years—sometimes 10, 20, or even 50 years. It’s about family members who are left without words when picking what family heirlooms and memories to keep and which to part

GENERAL | 53 with. There are many details that go missed and forgotten. I saw a need in the community to help families and bring passion and knowledge during a very chaotic period. Before I began the journey of establishing Moving Forward, I had heard of the National Association of Senior Move Managers (NASMM). I wanted to learn more about the organization and how I could formulate my business around the NASMM structure. I learned the NASMM Code of Ethics and received structured training on working with seniors with dementia and Alzheimer’s. I was able to develop my own tools and grow my business based through NASMM seminars and training.

It’s not a job in the regular sense. It’s about caring and understanding. Imagine, if you will, how difficult it is to part with your favorite shirt or picture. Think about years of memories in a home where you raised your children and had multiple celebrations: birthday parties, holiday events, and graduations. I go into a home and not only hear the stories but also see the memories, like when the homeowner shows me the growth chart on the wall. I listen to the description about the trees that were planted when they brought home each of their children. Images of children playing on the swing come to my mind while parents’ eyes light up and then sadden when they realize they have to move. How do you pack those memories? How do you bring them to your new home? Often clients move to independent living communities and assisted living communities, which are much smaller spaces than their current home. I have to be very creative on how to do just that while bringing along those memories.

When I do an initial home visit, I learn about the family and the dynamic of their relationships. I am a stranger in their environment, but at the same time, they’re looking to my expertise for guidance and reassurance. It’s extremely important to me that they know how much I cherish their memories and belongings.

Since it’s a stressful time, once we have everything packed up and the movers arrive, we will actually unpack and get them settled in that same day. We normally do a floor layout plan prior to the move, and are aware of where everything will be placed. By that evening, we have the bed made, the shower curtain hung, everything put in its place, and all the boxes removed. They can start living there immediately.

“I don’t know how I ever had time for work!” said a recent retiree as she described a full life of volunteerism, travel, socializing, and relaxation. The transition to retirement can be exciting but also anxiety provoking. Here are some ideas to keep in mind as you navigate the process.

IDENTITY Americans identify strongly with our profession and a sense of belonging and camaraderie in the workplace. As we prepare for retirement,

it helps to strengthen and broaden one’s identity to include other interests, relationship ties, and group memberships. As you establish a new retirement routine and expand social connections, your emerging retirement identity will solidify.

ACTIVITIES Retirement is not a static moment in time, but rather a process. It’s okay if it takes you a few months or even a couple of years to find your rhythm. Finding the right number

of commitments and deciding what they will be may be a process of trial and error. Don’t hesitate to make changes if you find that an activity you thought you would like does not suit you. Volunteering for a cause you believe in can provide a sense of meaning, belonging, and social connections. But if volunteer-

Retirement is not a static moment in time, but rather a process. ing isn’t your passion, it can feel like a burden and, frankly, a continuation of the shoulds from your preretirement life. A growing number of retirees pursue second careers, serve in consultant or mentoring roles in their area of expertise, and take on occasional special projects. Be flexible and keep an open mind.

RELATIONSHIPS If you are single, divorced, or widowed, this may be a time for you to pursue a new romantic relationship or close friendship. If you have a partner or spouse, retirement may mean being around one another more often than you have been in years. Some couples redistribute household chores, create a new space for reading or a hobby, or pursue shared hobbies collaboratively. One recent retiree I talked to said that her husband encouraged her to pursue biking, an interest of his. Soon after she retired, they took a delightful bike trip together in the fall, a time she could never have traveled before when she worked as a school teacher. Retirees may struggle with balancing their own needs with those of family. This is an opportunity to take stock of your values and priorities, and communicate your plans and expectations. Perhaps you aren’t willing to care for your grandchildren regularly, but would be happy to spend a long weekend with them once or twice a year. Communicating with siblings about elder parent care and being clear about what you can do is essential.

PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING Like any time of transition, taking stock of your own psychological well-being and that of your close re-

lationships is key. If you tend to become anxious or depressed at major times of transition (think marriage, parenthood, job change, loss of a loved one), then you may be vulnerable to these now. Prepare by talking to a psychologist or other mental health professional to shore up your coping skills. If your relationship with your partner or spouse has taken a back seat for a while, reestablish regular quality time together, get support from your community, or do a few sessions of couples therapy to get you back on track. Taking care of your mind and your body is just as important as ever. Take the opportunity to cook more healthfully, exercise regularly, and be social. Try activities you never had time for and enjoy this exciting time in your life. You’ve earned it!

Independent LIVING Choosing A Lifestyle BY JENNIFER KLUG Wisconsinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s changing seasons bring the excitement and anticipation of vibrant colors on the trees in fall, the long sunny days of summer, freshly fallen snow in winter, and the emergence of flowers and green grass each spring. But the change in seasons and weather also brings thoughts of yard work, shoveling, cleaning, gardening, and keeping up a house that may seem bigger and more overwhelming each year. Many seniors find themselves torn between keeping their home with all the fond memories it carries and the practical need for

downsizing to something smaller, and the thought of change is scary. For seniors who are still independent and caring for themselves, assisted living may not be the next logical step. However, there is another option. Independent living is about a lifestyle that offers social opportunities and a sense of community without the hassles of upkeep that come with owning a home. The words independent living describe a range of options, from simple apartment living in a 55+ community to an apartment complex with daily services and amenities, such as meals, activities,

and sometimes even transportation. Seniors can choose a community with all the features and amenities they want at this point in their lives. These are natural reactions, and by embracing them rather than avoiding the conversation, families can find great joy in this process of preparing to make another important, exciting life change.

Sense of Community through Second Chance Shop BY KELLY CHERAMY

It’s 8:45 a.m. on the lower level of Attic Angel Community, and the line of residents and staff is starting to form. The countdown is on for the opening of the thrice-yearly Second Chance Shop. Sweet anticipation has everyone feeling like a gameshow winner, all just waiting to see what they’ve won. That’s because the items they will get to choose from bear no price tag—everything is free. When the doors swing open, each visitor methodically receives a shopper ID number and the following instructions: each person may select up to six items on this first day of the shop’s run, and no money is necessary at checkout. The shopper’s item

count is recorded, the goods are bagged, and the residents and staff shoppers leave very happy indeed. “The looks of delight with their newfound treasures are priceless,” says Attic Angel Community President Mary Ann Drescher. “For more than 20 years, our residents and staff have enjoyed the shop’s generous spirit of giving, the fun of shopping with friends, and discovery of oldthings-made-new.”

Self-Fueled Engine So how can a store possibly sell all of its merchandise for free? The secret is an age-old recipe for success that has defined Attic Angel Community since its founding more than

a century ago. It’s called thrift, repurposing, recycling. Any way you dice it, it’s a wise use of resources with plenty of goodwill to boot. For background, Attic Angel Association was founded in 1889 by two sisters who descended from the third floor of their Victorian-era home bearing armloads of goods to share with families in need. When their father dubbed them his “attic angels,” history was born. Today’s volunteer organization, numbering more than 500 women, continues the tradition of turning secondhand treasures into first-rate experiences through three signature sales: the community-wide At-

The money made from these high-end thrift sales goes into community grants that support children and seniors around Dane County. In fact, a history of fundraising helped the association start a special brand of senior care that is now represented by Attic Angel Community on Old Sauk Road. The Second Chance Shop is yet another facet of Attic Angel’s efficiencies and shrewdness when it comes to secondhand thrift. Specifically donated for the residents and staff of Attic Angel Community, the items in the shop come from three sources: Attic Angel residents, staff members, and leftovers from the fundraising signature sales. “Many residents donate things as they downsize with a new move,” says Sandy Spengler, an Attic Angel resident who marks her 15th year running the sale. Other residents’ changing lifestyles and physical abilities also translate to donations. Sometimes families want the items of loved ones to support the Attic Angel family. “Nothing’s wasted and everything goes to people in need,” explains Sandy. “And it’s really, really important from an ecological standpoint not to be sending it to the landfills.”

Community Builder Residents and staff alike love the treasure hunt and appreciate this perk of life at Attic Angel. It makes them feel like they’re getting something no one else is getting. “And to our knowledge, that’s true,” Sandy says. “I don’t know of any place else doing this, but they should.” Items in the Second Chance Shop are a true grab bag. They run the gamut from unopened packages of

shoestrings and greeting cards to used clothing and jewelry to housewares and DVDs to luggage and televisions. Some of the more coveted or valuable items are awarded by way of a drawing on the last day. Though recycling is the event’s main purpose, residents and employees also experience a lift in satisfaction with their life at Attic Angel. Three times a year (not counting the additional frequent drawings for large items that can’t be stored), they look forward to rewarding themselves or finding items to pass along to loved ones. For staff members, their beneficiaries include adult children moving out on their own or, in some cases, relatives in much poorer countries. “The Second Chance Shop helps so many people,” Sandy explains. “It extends the power of recycling and strengthens the bond of the Attic Angel family far beyond our own walls.” For residents, the shop provides a safe and convenient on-site shopping experience without the worries of transportation and additional cost. For some, it’s the only way they can safely venture beyond their living quarters, and they greatly enjoy the social outing. Though many residents claim no need for anything, they often find unique or useful treasures for themselves and gather white elephant gifts for their family holiday celebrations.

For many people, knowing when a loved one needs additional care and support can be difficult. The first step is identifying any underlying issues that might indicate the need for more care. Some things to look for include: • Changes in medical condition • An acute, chronic, or terminal condition

• Functional or cognitive decline • Frequent visits to the emergency room, urgent care, or frequent hospitalizations • Concerns about home safety or falls • Changes in mobility • Isolation • Depression or anxiety • Lack of support • Financial concerns

SAFE & HEALTHY AT HOME | 105 The first step is identifying any underlying issues that might indicate the need for more care. ••••••• Nonmedical vs. Skilled Services Nonmedical home care provides assistance with general personal care, like dressing, grooming, eating, and other activities of daily living. This type of care is usually not covered by Medicare or private insurance; however, it may be covered under certain types of long-term care insurance. Nonmedical care can benefit people whose condition does not qualify them for skilled services but who may have a chronic illness, disease, or injury which requires increased day-to-day support due to physical or cognitive needs, or medication changes. Skilled services provide patients with medical care in the home. Skilled care is provided by a licensed home health agency and must be prescribed by a physician. Most skilled services are covered by Medicare.

Types of Skilled Services Skilled home healthcare helps patients remain at home and can include nursing, physical, occupational, and other therapies as well as medical social work support. Palliative care is a form of home healthcare for patients facing chronic or quality-of-life-limiting illnesses and is focused on relieving symptoms, pain, and stress. Palliative care can be provided alongside curative treatments and during any stage of an illness. Hospice is for patients with a limited life expectancy who are no longer receiving curative treatments. Care is focused on managing symptoms

and controlling pain, as well as supporting patients and their families through the end of life. Navigating the maze of care options available can be stressful for both caregivers and patients. While many may know they need additional help, they may not know where to find it. Start by talking with your loved one’s physician, call your local Aging and Disability Resource Center, or contact area home health agencies for guidance and support.
