Altitude What is acute mountain sickness? Some visitors to our high elevation location will experience some symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness. Symptoms of AMS can include, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, headache, or a general feeling of fatigue. If symptoms progress to vomiting or chest pains, please let the front desk know. We will have our security team assess the situation and recommend medical care, if needed. Most people equate it to the feeling of being hungover. Symptoms develop in the first 24 hours of being at altitude. If you have felt fine, but begin to feel ill two or more days after arrival, please let us know. This is most likely not AMS. How can I prevent altitude illness? As with any illness, prevention is always the best approach. These are things you can do to improve your chances of not getting altitude illness. • Staying hydrated is important as it aids your body in acclimatizing. • Avoid the use of alcohol or sleeping agents of the benzodiazepine family, since they both suppress breathing and result in lower blood oxygen. Other sleeping pills like Ambien or Lunesta do not affect breathing at high altitude and are safe. Avoid over-exertion for 1-2 days after arrival to altitude. • Oxygen breathing will improve symptoms rapidly, usually within minutes. Oxygen Therapy is available at the Spa, Ext. 2535, or canned oxygen can be purchased from the front desk. Should you continue to experience these or similar effects please dial Ext. 2514 for a guest services specialist. For a specialist with the Institute for Altitude Medicine please dial 970.728.6767. For the Telluride Medical Center, please dial 970.728.3848.

16

Safety & Security Tips Emergencies In the event of an emergency, dial Ext. 2514 for the resort operator or 8+911. Security Your safety and protection, as well as the security of your property, are important to us. For your convenience, our security department is staffed 24 hours a day, so please dial Ext. 2514 for assistance if needed. Fire Safety We ask that you take a few minutes to prepare yourself to act quickly and safely in the unlikely event of a fire. The Peaks is equipped with a local fire alarm system that is connected to the resort operator and fire department. Should you hear the alarm ringing, please evacuate your room by the front or rear stairwell. Do not use the elevator. The stairwells will not take you to the roof; you must go downstairs and exit the building. Before exiting your room, locate your key and take it with you. You may have to return to your room if the fire or smoke is intense during your exit. Please do not call the resort operator unless you are trapped in your room. Fire procedures & what to do in case of a fire. • When alarms are sounded the elevator will descend immediately to the lobby and remain there until the alarm is cleared. • In the event of an emergency, the resort will communicate with all guests by announcing the status of the alarm. • Always use the stairways. Never use the elevator unless otherwise instructed. • Learn where the exits are. Before you enter your room, look to the left and right of the door and locate exits. • Walk to each exit and count the doors along the wall between the exit and your room. This helps you to remember the distance and location of exits and may also help in case you have to find an exit when it is dark and smoke filled. • Locate and walk to the fire alarms and extinguishers on your floor.

17

• Pull the nearest fire alarm. If you find a fire in your room or somewhere else, sound the alarm. • Close doors against the fire. If possible, close the doors around the fire to prevent the fire from spreading. • Phone the operator for help. Immediately report the fire to the operator by dialing extension 2514 on your phone. If you cannot reach the operator, call 8+911. What if your exit is blocked? • Go back to your room. Should the stairwell start filling with thick smoke and your exit turns out to be unsafe, return to your room if possible – it is the safest place for you. • Stuff wet cloths under the door and air vents. Wet towels, sheets or blankets can keep smoke from entering through. What if you are ordered to evacuate your room? • Take your room key. If you are in your room, find your key. • Test the doors for heat. Before you open a door, test the door to the hallway with your hand to see if it is hot or cold. • Exit if there is no smoke outside. If the hallway contains little or no smoke, head for the nearest exit. • Hug walls while exiting. While moving to the nearest exit, keep close to the walls and as low as possible to the floor. If it is dark or smoky, count the number of doors to the exit and feel along the walls as you go. • Exit with caution. Test the exit door for heat before opening it and again, watch out for thick smoke in the stairwell. If the stairwell is safe, follow it to the exit doors. • AVOID ELEVATORS. In case of fire, never use the elevators for emergency exits, unless otherwise instructed. • Stay calm. Do not hurry, keep relaxed.
