Easter Family Activities With the Coronavirus lurking and posing serious health risks for the people of Townsville and the North Queensland community some families have cancelled their Easter and school holiday plans this 2020. At this time many families are hinting at the option to take up “isolation” to reduce the potential threat of contracting the virus. Easter is often enjoyed in North Queensland with a camping trip or day at the beach or out swimming. It’s a chance to spend some relaxed days with the family over a 4 day long weekend. There are plenty of activities to enjoy in the comfort of your home. Different age groups of kids and teens enjoy different activities. Using simple inexpensive items, what you have and thinking outside the box you can create some family fun at home!

GIVE THE KIDS SOMETHING TO PLAY WITH AND LEARN SOME SCIENCE
The science of the rubber egg experiment:
What you will need:
The eggshells are made from calcium carbonate. Vinegar is an acid that reacts with calcium carbonate when the two come into direct contact with each other. The bubbles that form around the eggs over the course of a few days are actually carbon dioxide bubbles caused by the reaction between vinegar and calcium carbonate. Eventually the eggshell fully dissolves leaving only the outer membrane which is soft and flexible.
Raw egg
Clear cup/jug
Distilled white vinegar
Food colouring
Bowl of water
Method: There are multiple layers in the egg for you to know about:
The eggshell made from calcium carbonate
Two shell membranes which protect bacteria from entering the egg
The egg white or albumen which provides protein
The yolk membrane which holds the egg yolk together
The yolk which contains vitamins, minerals and fat
1. Gather all of your materials in a clean space. Then carefully place the raw egg into the cup.
DON’T DRINK THE VINEGAR EVEN THOUGH SMALL AMOUNTS ARE SAFE ON YOUR FOOD. DIRECT CONSUMPTION CAN MAKE YOU SICK AND BURN YOU!

2. Fill up the cup with the distilled white vinegar until the egg is completely covered.
3. Choose what colour you want and add a generous amount of the food colouring, then stir till fully mixed with the water.
YOU MAY WANT TO WEAR GLOVES JUST IN CASE YOU SPILL THE DYE. IT CAN BE HARD TO CLEAN OFF.
5. After 3-5 days remove the egg from the vinegar and place it into a bowl of water. Gently rub away the remaining shell.
6. Then enjoy lightly bouncing it around and squishing it.
7. Beware since it can still break if you drop it from too high or something sharp pierces it.
4. Leave the eggs to sit in the vinegar for several days. The shell will bubble and dissolve.
WASH YOUR EYES WITH COLD RUNNING WATER IF YOU GET ANYTHING IN THEM. GC 03/20 https://babbledabbledo.com/how-to-make-a-rubberegg/?utm_medium=social&utm_source=pinterest&utm_campaign=tailwind_tribes&utm_content=tribes&utm_term=994193680_44381562_167774

First Aid Tips for your home
What is the basic First Aid? First Aid is the provision of basic medical care to someone experiencing a sudden injury or illness.
First Aid training including CPR are available to complete by attending a course – these are readily accessible in the community. CPR is an important lifesaving technique. Signs are mandatory for pool areas.
What are the 3 P's in first aid? One set of goals of first aid is called the "Three P's":
Preserve life – stop the person from dying Prevent further injury – stop the person from being injured even more Promote recovery – try to help the person heal their injuries
What is CPR in first aid? Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique useful in many emergencies, including a heart attack or near drowning, in which someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped.
First Aid Kits in the Home A well-stocked first aid kit is a must-have for treating minor injuries at home and on the go. on your own. Keep your supplies in a sturdy, clear plastic box so you can see what’s inside.
It is IMPORTANT to label your First Aid box.
Stop the bleeding - put pressure on the cut with a gauze pad or clean cloth and keep the pressure on for a few minutes Clean the wound - once you’ve stopped the bleeding, rinse the cut under cool running water or use a saline wound wash Remove any dirt or debris - use a pair of tweezers cleaned with alcohol to gently pick out any dirt, gravel, glass, or other material in the cut
First Aid kits in the home should be kept up high preferably in a childproof cabinet. You should consider keeping one full-sized kit in a central spot at home, such as your kitchen or bathroom. And, having a smaller kit in your car or purse for when you’re on the road. Common items in home first aid kits
Adhesive tape Alcohol wipes Allergy medicine Aloe vera gel Antibiotic ointment such as betadine Bandages in different sizes Calamine lotion Cold packs Elastic bandages Gauze rolls and pads Hand sanitizer (for your travel first aid kit) Latex-free gloves Pain reliever such as paracetamol Saline (wound wash) Scissors and tweezers Band aids Thermometer
Common problems that require First Aid at home
2. Nosebleeds Nosebleeds usually look a lot worse than they are. Most of the time you can stop the flow with a few simple steps:
Call the doctor or go to an emergency room if:
1. Cuts and Scrapes Follow these steps to keep cuts clean and prevent infections and scars
Wash your hands - so you don’t get bacteria into the cut and cause an infection
Lean the head slightly forward, so blood doesn’t run down the throat With a tissue or washcloth, gently press the nostrils together to stop the bleeding Hold the nose for at least 5 minutes Then check to see if the bleeding has stopped - if it hasn’t stopped, gently squeeze for another 10 minutes
The bleeding hasn’t stopped after 15 to 20 minutes or keeps starting again The bleeding is fast and there’s a lot of blood The bleeding is from an injury to your nose or face You feel faint or weak
3. Animal Bites and Insect Stings Sometimes a seemingly friendly dog or cat can bite or scratch. If you or your child gets a bite, follow these steps to treat the wound:

Hold a towel or gauze to the area to stop the bleeding Clean the wound with soap and water Cover it with a clean bandage or gauze pad
When should I see a doctor for an animal bite? For any animal bite, you may need an antibiotic to prevent infection. So it’s always a good idea to call your doctor – ALWAYS call your doctor or head to the emergency room if:
The bite was caused by an animal you don’t know, or by any wild animal like a raccoon, skunk, or bat You need a tetanus vaccine The bite is large, or it doesn’t stop bleeding after you’ve held pressure on it for 15 minutes You think the bite may have damaged a bone, tendons, or nerves, because you can’t bend or straighten the body part or you’ve lost feeling in it The wound is red, swollen, or oozing fluid
How do I treat bee, wasp, and other insect stings - Here’s what to do:
If the insect has left behind a stinger, remove it from the skin so less of the venom gets into your body Wash the area around the sting with soap and water Hold an ice pack or cool washcloth to the sting to stop it from swelling To prevent itching, use antihistamine
Serious burns need to be treated by a doctor or in a hospital. Call for medical help if:
You can treat minor first-degree burns and small second-degree burns at home. Here’s what to do:
How do I treat sunburn?
Place the burned area under running cool water for at least 5 minutes to reduce swelling Apply aloe vera cream to soothe the area Loosely wrap a gauze bandage around the burn To relieve pain such as paracetamol
*Never put butter on a burn or pop any blisters that form - You could damage the skin and cause an infection*
4. Minor Burns Grabbing a hot pot or splashing boiling water on your skin are just two common causes of burns around the house. When you get a burn, first check to see which type it is. Some are more serious than others.
You have a third-degree burn The burn is larger than 2 to 3 inches The burn is on your face, hands, feet, or over a joint like your shoulder or knee The burn goes all the way around a hand, arm, foot, or leg The pain gets worse instead of better The burn was caused by electricity or a chemical You see fluid or pus oozing from the burn
Always wear sunscreen when you’re outdoors to protect your skin from the sun Soothe your burned skin with a cool, damp washcloth - take a cool shower or bath - pat your skin dry afterward Apply an aloe vera lotion If the sunburn is really sore take pain relief medication
First-degree burns are painful but minor – they turn red and may swell Second-degree burns form blisters –t he skin may be very red and painful Third-degree burns make the skin look white or charred - these burns may not hurt because nerves have been damaged

A sunburn can dry out your body. Drink extra water so you won’t get dehydrated. Give your sunburn time to heal. Cover your burned skin with clothing and a hat to protect it when you go outside. See a doctor if you have blisters on the sunburn, or you get a fever or chills. Don’t pop the blisters. They could get infected.
For a more severe sprain or strain, where there’s a lot of pain, swelling, and you have trouble moving around, see your doctor. You may need crutches or physical therapy. Emergencies Call 000 for any medical emergency, including when a person has:
5. Sprains and Strains Sprains and strains are common injuries. Here’s how to tell the difference: A sprain is a stretch or tear of a ligament, the tough tissue that connects bones and supports the joints. You’re most likely to get a sprain in the wrist or ankle. Sprains cause pain, bruising, and swelling. You may have trouble moving the joint.
How can I prepare for an emergency?
A strain is an injury to a muscle or tendon, the thick tissue that attaches muscles to bones. You’re most likely to get a strain in your back or hamstring muscles. Strains cause pain, weakness, swelling, and muscle cramps. You may have trouble moving the muscle. How do I treat sprains and strains? For a mild sprain or strain:
Rest the limb to give it a chance to heal Hold ice on the area for 20 minutes at a time, four to eight times a day, to bring down swelling (don’t use heat -it could make the area swell even more) Wrap an elastic bandage or splint around the sprain or strain Put a pillow under the injured body part to keep it raised Take over-the-counter medicines such as ibuprofen to relieve the pain
Chest pain A serious allergic reaction Bleeding that won’t stop Trouble breathing Signs of stroke
Keep a fully stocked first-aid kit in your home and car Have up-to-date copies of each person’s medical history in your home and car Post an emergency contact sheet next to each phone in the house - show it to everyone who spends time in your home, including family members and babysitters Make sure your children know what number to dial -- 000 -- and what they should tell the operator
Emergency Contact Sheet FOR AN EMERGENCY DIAL 000 You might also like to record other important contact details for the following:
Hospital phone number Doctor’s name and phone number Dentist’s name and phone number Medication list
Safety signs are a good way to keep informed and are handy in the event of an emergency.

Staying Connected Social Distancing and Self-Isolation
With the coronavirus pandemic, globally we are seeing implementation of social distancing and self-isolation. Whilst isolating oneself is recognised for having negative impacts on mental health in the current circumstances it has become and will continue to be a necessity.
Mental fitness means keeping your brain and emotional health in good shape. It refers to exercises that help you:
Social distancing and self-isolating is being implemented to “slow” the spread of coronavirus. Self-isolation requirements in Australia currently include a 14 day voluntary self-quarantine if you have travelled overseas and have come back into the country.
Mental fitness can help you relax, think more clearly, improve healthy brain function and release vital hormones and chemicals for body functioning that help your health and wellbeing. Mental exercises to practice mental fitness include:
What is social distancing? This practice is a physical measure that is voluntarily taken by an individual to proactively participate in to reduce the spread of a disease. It is important as it slows and decreases the disease spread to vulnerable groups such as the very young, elderly or immune compromised persons. Isolation is the physical separation from other people so keeping a safe distance between people when out in public and voluntarily avoiding v gatherings with a significant number of people is now required. If we all work together to respect the recommendations and to implement the recommended measures we can proactively contribute to the health and wellbeing of the nation.

The Importance of staying connected Because social contact is such a fundamental human need, we suffer both mentally and physically without it. Without any face-to-face contact at all people will find that not all substitutes are going to be stimulating and adapting to the change may induce a change in mood and behaviour. We can use social media and communication tools to continue to have meaningful interactions and maintain relationships. Activities for maintaining social connections

Household Fire Safety Tips for your home
Avoid using power boards or double adaptors Clean the lint filter on your clothes dryer every time you use the dryer Let your clothes dryer finish its ‘cooldown’ cycle (this prevents overheating)
2. Open fires and heaters House fires can be caused by:
faulty electrical appliances open fires and heaters unattended cooking cigarettes batteries left in toys
Smoke alarms are essential for home fire safety. A home safety plan should include:
Having a fire extinguisher or fire blanket Smoke alarms A home fire escape plan Home fire safety checklist
A home fire safety checklist can help you identify risks and hazards plus help you to improve making your home fire safe. The following are things to check in your home to promote fire safety: 1. Electrical appliances
Replace faulty or worn-out electrical appliances and appliances with frayed cords.
Enclose your open fire with a guard Secure a fire guard by attaching it to the wall Clear space around your heater – leave 1 m of space around your heater or fireplace Turn off heaters at the power source when you’re not using them If you have a fireplace, extinguish the fire before you go to bed or leave your house
3. Cooking – inside and out
Don’t leave cooking unattended on the stove If deep-frying or using a wok - make sure flames can’t get into the fat Supervise children in the kitchen at all times or keep children out of the kitchen Use the inner stovetop elements first and keep pot handles turned in Check the gas cylinder on your barbecue regularly – cylinder expiry date and hose connections Always keep matches and lighters well away from children

4. Smoke alarms Only working smoke alarms save lives. Here’s what to do to keep smoke alarms in working order:
Change alarm batteries once a year, at the same time each year – mark it on a calendar Test your alarm every month by pressing the test button and listening for the beep Keep your alarm dust free – clean it regularly Replace smoke alarms every 10 years Be aware that children under five don’t always hear smoke alarms Install smoke alarms just outside the sleeping areas of your home so that the alarm sounds before smoke reaches anyone who is asleep.
Multistorey houses and apartments should have smoke alarms on all levels. Fire-fighting and Fire Safety Equipment
Practise the ‘stop, drop, cover and roll’ drill in case children’s clothes catch fire Practise the ‘crawl down low and go, go, go’ escape drill for crawling under smoke and poisonous gases Never deadlock doors when you’re at home Dial 000 and ask for the fire brigade in an emergency - know your address and the closest cross street In the event of a fire, keep a close watch on children once outside to make sure they don’t run back into the house
How to use a Fire Extinguisher *Read the instructions for using the extinguisher before you need to use it* Use an extinguisher if: You can extinguish the fire quickly Everyone else has left the area You know your extinguisher is suitable for putting out the type of fire you’re facing Once you’ve used your extinguisher - call 000 so firefighters can investigate
Smoke alarms are essential for home fire safety. They give an early warning in the event of fire, and, they alert you quickly, and give you a chance to get out of the house to a safe location. For home fire safety, it’s a very good idea to have the following equipment handy:
A fire extinguisher and fire blanket that conform to Australian Standards An electrical safety switch on your switchboard
Fire Safety Tips - How to keep your family safe
Make sure you know how to use the fire safe equipment in your home Never use water to put out an oil, electrical or fat fire Prepare and practise for home fire safety Practise a home escape plan with your children and family
How to use a Fire Blanket *Read the instructions for using the blanket before you need to use it* Here’s when and how to use a fire blanket:
Use a fire blanket to smother fires in cooking fat If a pot is burning carefully place a blanket over the pot and fire Turn off the heat source and leave the blanket over the pot Dial 000 to call the fire brigade
*ONLY FIGHT A FIRE IF YOU FEEL SAFE AND ABLE TO DO SO – PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY*

Protecting Against Viruses EFFECTIVELY WASHING YOUR HANDS
Respiratory viruses like coronavirus (COVID-19) but not exclusive to, spread when mucus or droplets get into your body. Most often this happens through your hands, being one of the most common ways of spreading viruses from one person to the next.
When should you wash your hands? In terms of the prevention of COVID-19 you should wash your hands at the following times:
Here’s a guide on how to wash your hands the right way: In order to eliminate all traces of viruses a quick scrub will not suffice. Step 1: Wet hands with running water. Step 2: Apply enough soap to cover hands. Step 3: Scrub all surfaces of the hand – Including back of hands, between fingers and under nails – for at least 20 seconds. Step 4: Rinse thoroughly with running water. Step 5: Dry hands with a clean cloth or singleuse towel.
After blowing your nose or sneezing After visiting a public place, including public transportation, markets or any other place with a high population of people. After touching surfaces outside, including money Before, during and after being in contact or caring for a sick person Before and after eating
Do I need to use warm water? Cold water and warm water are equally effective at killing germs as long as soap is used. What if I don’t have soap? Using Chlorinated water or hand sanitizer is a second best option if you don’t have access to soap. Do I need to use a towel? Germs spread easier from wet skin than from dry skin. So drying your hands completely is an important step in washing your hands. Paper towel and cleaning cloths are effective ways of ensuring germs don’t spread to other surfaces.

Home Spa Day HOW TO CREATE YOUR VERY OWN SPA TREATMENT AT HOME
Anyone can do this; women, men and even kids under supervision. Spa treatments are not only good for making you relaxed but they are also good for your body, mind and overall hygiene. Facial Steam These not only can be done by professionals but also in your own home by you. Just don’t go removing blackheads because you may end up damaging your skin instead. Without that there are many benefits to a steam. It hydrates your skin, de-stresses and relaxes you. What you will need:
1 large sized glass bowl 1 bath towel
For the sake of simplicity we will be using a mix for hydration but you can try other mixes for different effects.
3ml dried chamomile 3ml dried rose petals 6ml fresh lemon peel
What to do: 1. First get comfortable since you will be there for a while. It is a good time to play some tunes. 2. Tie your hair back so nothing is in your face. 3. Clean your face with a natural exfoliator. You can make this at home easily. GC 03/20 https://www.purefiji.com/blog/diy-facial-steam/ https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/how-to-have-a-spa-day-at-home/
4. After that, wash your face with lukewarm water. 5. Fill the glass bowl with steamy hot water to about halfway. 6. Add the chamomile, rose petals and lemon peel (or whatever you chose to mix). 7. Lean over the bowl with a towel over your head to create a miniature cave or tent shape. Don’t put your face so close it burns and is hard to keep up but close enough to feel the heat. 8. Steam your face for 10 minutes. 9. Then rinse your face once again in lukewarm water and apply some moisturizer. Foot Soak Good for those with sore feet. It helps with reducing athlete’s foot, inflammation, exfoliating and odour. A foot soak doesn’t require much as you can sit at your desk or even watch TV while doing it. It also doesn’t have many ingredients needed. At most only do this treatment twice a week at the most to avoid drying your feet too much.
The Townsville Zine
What you will need:
Basin or container suitable for comfortable positioning of feet. Epsom Salt (make sure you get the one suitable for foot soaks.)
3. Slowly add liquids to the dry mixture while mixing. It shouldn’t fizz up. The mix should be clumpy. If it can’t form add more oil.
What to do:
4. Press the mixture down hard into moulds so it is compact and strong.
1. Fill the basin with enough warm water to cover feet up to the ankles. (Temperature of water should be between 33’C – 38’c.)
5. Once fully packed gently tap the bombs out of the mould. Leave overnight to dry fully. Avoid moisture in storage.
2. Add half cup of Epsom salt to water.
Self-Massaging
3. Soak your feet for 20 – 30 minutes. 4. Dry your feet thoroughly and then moisturize. Bath Bombs For that relaxing time in the bath and you don’t have any bath bombs on hand. Bath bombs are great for moisturising your skin. It will also leave a pleasing scent in the air. What you will need:
1 cup baking soda ½ cup citric acid ¾ cup corn starch ½ cup(heaped) salt 3 Tablespoons oil (e.g. almond, hemp or coconut.) 1 Tablespoon water 20 - 30 drops of an essential oil of your choice (e.g. lavender, tea tree, peppermint etc.) 3 – 5 drops food colouring (optional)
There are a few utensils needed as well in this recipe.
Large bowl Hand whisk Small Mason Jar Shaping mould (for the bath bombs)
What to do: 1. Mix all of the dry ingredients with a whisk in the bowl. There should be no clumps in the end. 2. Add all wet ingredients to jar and shake vigorously. GC 03/20 https://www.purefiji.com/blog/diy-facial-steam/ https://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/how-to-have-a-spa-day-at-home/
For feet 1. Use a ball around the size of a tennis ball. Sit down and either go bare foot or wear a sock. 2. Firmly press your foot onto the ball and roll it back and forth. Repeat for the other foot. Lower back 1. Place down foam roller or as a replacement use a rolled up yoga mat. 2. Lay your lower back onto the roller. Your butt and shoulders should be touching the ground. 3. Use your feet to move the roller up and down your back in slow motions. If you encounter pain, stay still for at least 30 seconds to relieve the tension. Back of the legs 1. Also using the foam roller you can do the same as the back, laying onto it and moving it up and down your leg. Front of the legs 2. To massage the front of your leg with the roller go onto your hands and knees. 3. Place the roller under one leg around the middle of the shin. 4. Then begin moving that leg back and forth so the entire length is messaged with the roller. Repeat for the other leg.

International Guide Dog Day CELEBRATE & SUPPORT OUR GUIDE DOGS ON APRIL 29
On International Guide Dog Day we celebrate all the incredible Guide Dogs around the world, who take the lead every day to ensure people who are blind and vision impaired are able to experience freedom and independence. In Australia, over 450 000 people are either blind or vision impaired. A Guide Dog can completely transform a person’s life. Guide Dogs help their handlers navigate the world and continue doing things like going to the shops, getting to work and moving through crowds safely and independently. When a dog is ready to start the training program, each dog is allocated to an experienced trainer who they will work with for five months to learn all the essential skills to become a Guide Dog. The dogs learn to:
Respond to their handler’s instructions
Locate safe road crossing points and stop at kerbs
WR 03/20 https://www.guidedogsqld.com.au/ google images
Cross roads in a straight line
Guide their handler around stationary objects like chairs and signposts
Avoid height obstacles such as overhanging branches
Avoid obstacles like pedestrians, prams, trolleys and bicycles
Locate objects and destinations such as seats and stairs.
The dogs spend plenty of time training in the community, as this is where they’ll spend most of their time when they start working with a blind or vision impaired handler. Places they regularly visit while in training include residential neighbourhoods, shopping centres, public transport and the CBD.
The Townsville Zine
A Guide Dog can change the life of someone with low or no vision by offering the perfect blend of both independence and companionship. After training for almost two years, it’s important to match them with the right handler to ensure they work together successfully.
Training for a single Guide Dog costs $50000 so by getting involved in your community you’re helping Guide Dogs Australia to provide lifechanging services to help more people remain independent and active. To make a financial donation or to volunteer your time, please visit www.guidedogsqld.com.au for more information.

Earth Day 2020 50 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
What is Earth Day? Earth day has been celebrated every April 22nd since 1970. The main aim of Earth Day is to raise awareness of the negative impact mankind is having on the environment and the earth as a whole, and is a day for political action and civic participation. This year’s theme is Climate Action.
History of Earth Day Earth Day was a unified response to an environment in crisis due to things like oil spills, smog and river so polluted that they literally caught fire. On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans (10%) of the U.S population at the time took to the streets, college campuses and hundreds of cities to protest environmental ignorance and demand a new way forward for our planet. The first Earth Day is credited with launching the modern environmental movement, and is now recognised as the world’s largest civic event.
What Was The Result of Earth Day? The First Earth Day sparked a wave of action, including the passage of landmark environmental laws and The Clean Air, Clean Water and endangered species acts were all created in response to the first Earth Day in 1970.

Go from an open water scuba diver to a rescue diver to a master diver. Go into the many specialised courses to see different aspects of diving. There are also courses solely based on the tech side of things. You can start with the introduction then onto the rebreather, decompression procedures, sidemount, range, and more. For those who love the sea but don’t want to get wet there are options to become a gas blender or an equipment specialist. If being a diver for photography, videos, exploration, and fun not really your thing there is more. THE DO’S AND DON’TS FOR HOW TO DRESS UP IN RETAIL
Before even getting into the clothing makes sure your hair is neat and tidy. Additionally, clean and manage your nails as no one wants to see dirty nails touching all of their items. For everyone in any business it is mandatory to have a good posture, attitude and smile. Now, let’s begin onto how to dress properly in the retail business. Starting with the ladies, make your choice out of dress shirts, long-sleeve knits or sweaters. Only wear a T-shirt if it is stylish and appropriate, no rips, stains or dirt on them. For your bottoms wear dress pants. If you prefer skirts make a choice of pencil, A-line, pleated, maxi or tweed skirt. If it is a hot summer’s day you may opt out for a nice pair of shorts as long as they are appropriate in length and stick to basic colours. It is best if they are made of silk, linen or wool blends. Jeans are a hard topic; just make sure it goes well with the dress code at the work place.
For dresses stay ladylike. Wear maxi dresses and shirtdresses. In the shoe department you should wear enclosed shoes. Add some accessories to jazz up your look. Put on a simple necklace, bracelet, earrings, belt or scarf.
Now into the men’s wear. For your tops take a pic of dress shirts, sweaters, V-neck knit and polos. Feel free to mix and match the options. As for the bottoms, put on a pair of suit pants, tailored pants or urban pants. If allowed for a more casual look wear some chinos or clean jeans. Footwear will include loafers and dressy laceups.
