Back To School Science. BACK TO SCHOOL
Get the kids back into the school spirit with these 3 super cool science experiments you can make at home with ingredients you probably already have in the kitchen.
5. Shake for a few seconds longer.
Homemade Butter
As you churn whipped cream, you beat droplets of butterfat until they collapse and rejoin to form a single blob of butter. This is an example of emulsion, where one liquid hangs suspended in another.
6. Congratulations! You have pure butter. How it Works
Plastic Milk
Materials
screw-top plastic container or Mason jar
1/2 cup of whipping cream
1/4 teaspoon of salt (optional)
Spoon
Instructions
Materials
1. Pour whipping cream into screw-top plastic container. (make sure not to fill more than halfway)
One cup of milk
4 teaspoons of white vinegar
2. Add Salt.
A bowl
3. Make sure you screw the top on tight.
A strainer
4. Shake for 7-9 minutes or until the cream stops sloshing around and you are left with a yellow blob. F.C. 11/12/2019 http://www.sciencefun.org/kidszone/experiments/butter-fingers/ https://sciencebob.com/make-plastic-milk/ https://sciencebob.com/easy-to-make-ice-cream-in-a-plastic-bag/
The Townsville Zine
4 teaspoons of sugar
Instructions
A few drops of food colouring (optional)
1. Heat up the milk until it is hot, but not boiling
Lots of ice
½ cup of salt. (Rock salt works best)
Small zip-lock freezer bag
Large zip-lock freezer bag
2. Carefully pour the milk into the bowl 3. Add the vinegar to the milk and stir it up with a spoon for about a minute 4. Now the fun part, pour the milk through the strainer into the sink (careful it may be hot!). 5. Left behind in the strainer is a mass of lumpy blobs. 6. When it is cool enough, you can rinse the blobs off in water while you press them together. 7. Now just mould it into a shape and it will harden in a few days. How it works You made a substance called CASEIN. It’s from the Latin word meaning “cheese.” Casein occurs when the protein in the milk meets the acid in the vinegar. The casein in milk does not mix with the acid and so it forms blobs. True plastics, called polymers, are a little different.
Homemade Ice Cream
Instructions 1. Put the milk, cream, flavouring, colouring, and sugar into the SMALL zip-bag and zip it shut (be sure it is zipped up and closed completely) 2. Put about a cup of ice into the large bag and the cover the ice with a small handful of salt. Put the small bag with your ingredients into the larger bag. 3. Add some more ice and then some more salt. Keep adding salt and ice until the bag is almost full. 4. Zip it shut (be sure it is zipped) and then carefully hold opposite sides of the bag and shake the bag back and forth (like your steering a car) for about 5-8 minutes. 5. Open the larger bag and take out the smaller bag – it should be full of ice cream! Rinse off the bag under running water to remove any salt that may be near the opening of the bag. How it Works
Materials
½ cup of milk
½ cup of cream
1/4 teaspoon of vanilla or what flavour ice cream you would like
F.C. 11/12/2019 http://www.sciencefun.org/kidszone/experiments/butter-fingers/ https://sciencebob.com/make-plastic-milk/ https://sciencebob.com/easy-to-make-ice-cream-in-a-plastic-bag/
When you added salt to the ice, the chemistry between the two forced the ice to melt. Before the ice could melt though, it needed to borrow heat from objects that surround it. This is called an ENDOTHERMIC process. Since your ingredients are not as cold as the ice, it borrowed heat from your ingredients making them colder! When they get colder, they freeze up into ice cream.

Sand Clay
parchment paper. Spray lightly with cooking spray to prevent sticking. 2. Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl and mix with a large spoon or spatula until doughy. If it gets too difficult to mix, pull the ingredients onto a piece of parchment and work the dough with your hands. It should resemble play dough. Add more water or flour as needed to reach any easy moulding consistency. 3. Split the dough into multiple pieces as desired (perhaps one piece per kid) and press and shape on the prepared baking sheet. (Don’t move the creation before it’s baked or it may break.)
Ingredients 2 cups sand (real or fake) 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup salt 1 cup warm water
4. Pat the dough down to no more than an inch thick and cut away pieces as needed; you can even use cookie cutters! Press hands into the dough, write with a stick, or press shells into it before baking. 5. Move the baking sheet to the preheated oven and bake for about an hour. Once sand is very hard to the touch, remove and allow cooling at room temperature before carefully peeling from the sheet.
Shells for decorating
Directions 1. Jellyfish in a Bottle
8. Fill up your water bottle. 9. Put your jellyfish in the bottle with a few drops of blue food colouring. Screw on the cap.
Shell Impression Decoration
Supplies Transparent plastic grocery bag Plastic water bottles. Thread Food colouring Scissors
Directions 1. Flatten the bag and cut off the handle and the bottom part.
Supplies
2. Cut along both sides to split into 2 plastic sheets.
Air Drying Clay
3. From the centre of the plastic sheet, fold it like a tiny balloon to make the head part and tie it with the thread – not too tight. You must leave a little hole in order to pour some water in the head part.
Shells
4. Now you’ll get the head balloon part and the remaining will be its tentacles. Cut from the edge up to the head part roughly. You’ll get for about 8-10 tentacles.
Cookie cutters
Twine Branch
Directions 1. Form three medium-size balls of air-dry clay. Roll out into ⅓-inch-thick slabs. Cut out circles with cookie cutters.
5. For each of them, cut again into 3-4 small strings and cut off the remaining part.
2. Evenly press the top of a shell into the centre of the clay circles; remove. Poke a hole in the top with a skewer; let dry.
6. Trim to make random long and short tentacles.
3. Hang with twine from a branch.
7. Put some water into the head part to make it be able to sink. You must leave some air inside to make the jellyfish be able to float up. Flea Remedies FOR CATS & DOGS
Summer is lots of fun in the sun; it’s also a time when our pets can become a breeding ground for fleas and ticks. There are so many different flea products out there and it is hard to find one that you feel safe using on your pets. There are so many chemicals used in store bought flea and tick products that make many pet owners anxious to use them on their furry family members. You may also have a bad reaction to them as well.
Initials L.B Date 12/19 Copyright https://petcouponsavings.com/
The alternative to these products is to make your own. So I’ve found some recipes of Natural Flea Remedies for Dogs and Cats that you can make in no time using simple ingredients. These homemade natural flea and tick remedies are effective and you can feel safe using them as an alternative to the chemicalladen flea products.
The Townsville Zine
TIP Make sure you are using 100% Pure Essential Oils and NOT the fragrance oils. The 100% pure oils will give you more bang for your buck because they are stronger, more effective and proven medicinal properties! Flea Repellent Mist Spray: Spray this on your pet after a bath after they are completely dry. Collar Soak: You can also soak their collar in this solution. Do this about once a month. ESSENTIAL OIL FLEA BOMB HOMEMADE FLEA SPRAY RECIPE:
Ingredients 4 drops Rosemary Essential Oil
240ml purified water 3 tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar
4 drops Peppermint Essential Oil 4 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil
10 drops Lavender oil 10 drops Cedar wood oil
1 oz. Almond Oil
10 drops Citronella oil
Small dropper, preferably dark glass like this one.
10 drops Peppermint oil
Instructions
Directions: Mix all ingredients and then add it to a spray bottle. Avoid spraying the dog’s eyes! If your dog doesn’t like to be sprayed at all just spray it on your hand and pet him/her with it! Works great!
TIP How much you put on your dog or cat will depend on its size, for a little dog I put ½ to ¾ dropper along their spine between shoulder blades, rub it in just a bit.
Initials L.B Date 12/19 Copyright https://petcouponsavings.com/
1. Fill glass bottle to curved neck with almond oil. 2. Add each of your essential oils. 3. Shake bottle well, and shake before each use.

FLEA REPELLENT FOR HOME INGREDIENTS HOMEMADE FLEA REPELLENT MATERIALS Small squirt bottle 500ml – 600ml works fine. 2 cups water
4 tablespoons borax 6 tablespoons very fine salt 6 tablespoons baking soda
2 Tbsp alcohol-free witch hazel
30 drops lemon essential oil (or lavender, peppermint, tea tree, orange)
1 large lemon sliced
An empty jar with a plastic lid
Handful of fresh lavender sprigs or 1Tbsp dried lavender
DIRECTIONS
Small saucepan DIRECTIONS Step 1: Gather your ingredients and add everything except the witch hazel to your saucepan. Step 2: Simmer on a stove top for 30 minutes. Remove to cool. The water will have turned a light lavender, and it should give off a citrusy sweet aroma. Step 3: Once cooled, strain the infusion through a small-holed colander or mesh sieve. Discard the lemon and lavender. Step 4: Add the witch hazel to the mixture and fill the bottle. Add a sprig or 2 of lavender to make it pretty, and admire. We use a small squirt bottle because the cat is not a fan of the thing. We store whatever is left over in the fridge and use about one small bottle a week. Step 5: To apply the infusion to your pet, gently mist along his/her back and massage into the fur.
Initials L.B Date 12/19 Copyright https://petcouponsavings.com/
Mix all dry ingredients in a large bowl. Add essential oils and mix well until no clumps are left. Take the jar and pierce a few holes through the plastic lid. Pour the homemade flea repellent into the jar, tightly screw the lid on and start sprinkling the mixture on carpets. Leave on for 24hrs then thoroughly vacuum clean. Clean the vacuum cleaner right afterwards to make sure fleas are completely removed from the house.
TIP Apple Cider Vinegar can be used as a natural remedy to prevent and fight fleas and ticks

Pamper Pets SUMMER PET CARE
DIY NATURAL PET SPA Let’s face it, your pets do not smell great in summer. Between the humidity, dirt they like to roll in, as well as playing in water they do not smell fresh. You can always buy deodorizing products. However if you make your own products, you know exactly what’s in them and you get the smells you like. The following recipes are designed to give your pets a spa like experience as well as making your home smell fresh.

Summer Pet Care ESSENTIAL PET CARE FOR SUMMER
Summer’s a great time in Townsville. Sunshine, BBQ’s, beaches, parks and more. It’s also a great time for outdoor activities with your pets.
So, while we organize some time to have fun in the sun, we also have to plan for ways to keep us and our pets cool.
It can also be an uncomfortable and even dangerous time for your pet. Pet owners make more trips to the vet’s office than any other time of year. More visits for injuries, skin infections, pest infestations, grass seed removal and ear infections are amongst the most common vet visits.
PROTECT YOUR PET’S SKIN
Initials L.B Date 12/19 Copyright https://puppytoob.com/
When your pet is going to be out in the sunlight, he or she should be treated with an application of pet sunblock. Skin cancer can happen to animals just like humans, especially pets that are more indoors than out.
The Townsville Zine
PROVIDE SHADED AREAS Your dog will feel as uncomfortable and miserable as you do under the hot summer sun. If you spend time outdoors with your pet on hot days, make sure that he has a shaded area to retreat to. This could be a large beach umbrella, a makeshift tarp shade, gazebo, or anywhere that has leafy trees offering shade.
NEVER LEAVE YOUR PET IN A VEHICLE ALONE One of the worst things a pet owner can do is to leave your pet alone in a car during the summer months. Temperatures inside a vehicle rise quickly. Pets can suffer heat exhaustion, or worse, heat stroke, just as easily as people. COLD WATER During the summer months, your pets need to have fresh, cold water. For added coolness, drop a couple ice cubes in the water so it stays colder longer.
PLAN WALKS DURING COOLER HOURS Summer is a great season to go for long and leisurely walks with your pet, but the hottest part of the day is not the best time to go. Instead, take your walks in the early morning and later in the evening. It’s important to remember that your pet has a furry coat that will make their body heat more quickly, and it will retain the heat.
Initials L.B Date 12/19 Copyright https://puppytoob.com/
KNOW THE SIGNS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION It’s important to know when your pet may have had too much sun. Summer time can be a dangerous time for humans and their pets. Just like us, pets can get too much sun or become overheated. It’s very important to know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion. During the first stages, your dog will pant heavily. His or her gums may turn very bright red or become dry. They may slobber with thick drool. They may experience diarrhoea; vomiting or they may exhibit signs of weakness with wobbly legs.
The Townsville Zine
Survive Summer Pregnancy SUMMER PREGNANCY
Most women say they feel hotter during pregnancy. This is because pregnant women’s core body temperature is actually any higher than usual. Warmer weather can certainly make pregnant women feel more hot and uncomfortable. Hot weather can also lead to dehydration, fatigue, heat exhaustion, fainting or even heatstroke. So it’s really important to keep cool when pregnant.
Protect and soothe the itch by soaking in a warm bath with oatmeal. Your doctor may also be able to prescribe an over-the-counter anti-itch cream.
Dark Spots and Patches
Here are some pregnancy survival tips for surviving this summer.
Summer Pregnancy Skincare Issues Dry, Itchy Skin
When you are pregnant, melanin is responsible for brownish coloured patches on women’s skin this occurs due to hormonal changes. This change occurs primarily among brunettes and darker-skinned women. Protect your skin by applying sunscreen multiple times a day, and wearing hats, especially those with wide brims that cover your face and neck. Stretched skin caused by pregnancy weight gain is already dry, and summer heat and sun may drain your skin of needed moisture. Prevent itchiness by using moisturizing shower products and applying lotions or body oils immediately following a shower or bath. Heat Rash
Summer Masks These summer mask are a simple and quick way to restore you skin and keep it cool this summer. Turmeric + Mint + Rose water mask
Prickly heat rash (Miliaria) can be caused by both heat and sweat. It typically occurs where two skin surfaces have touched or rubbed. Prevent the rash by patting the area where skin touches and dry immediately following a bath or shower. Also wear lighter fabrics, such as cotton that will not cling to your body. Protect the rash if it begins to cause pain or discomfort, by asking your doctor about prescribing a medicated lotion or powder.
Turmeric powder helps you get rid of summer rashes as well as skin breakouts and mint works as a cooling agent. Prepare a fine paste by blending a few mint leaves in rose water and mix it with a spoonful of turmeric powder. Apply the paste and let it rest on your skin for 10 minutes. This mask will help you stay fresh and rejuvenated throughout the day. Cucumber + Yoghurt mask
Summer pregnancy tips and tricks
Wear light-coloured clothing
Drink plenty of liquids to remain hydrated. Sports drinks with electrolytes can help replace lost salt and retain fluid
Take quick showers frequently to keep cool
Put feet up to alleviate swelling
Minimize salt intake, which will combat water retention
Nest in the morning
Exercise in the pool
Wear loose and cool clothing
Cucumber is one of the best cooling masks to help you survive summers. Mix a fresh pulp of cucumber with a spoonful of yoghurt. Apply the paste and let it sit for about 30 minutes before rinsing. This mask will give your skin the much-needed boost of hydration.

Write Everything Down Make sure you are looking at your planner every day and writing everything down as the days go by. Important topics I like to jot down are goals and to-do for the month, appointments and meetings, reminders.
Daily Tasks Having daily tasks and to-do’s list helps you keep tack and stay organized for that day. These can be household chores such as grocery shopping, cleaning, or kids’

athletic events and activities, work, or school related. The best way to set this out is to organize from top priority to least.
Plan Ahead Set a day and a time every week to plan out the next week ahead, the best days to do this is either at the start or end of the week, for example Monday morning or Sunday afternoon.
Colour Coding Colour coding makes it an easier way for you to scan and read through your planner. Travel and vacation can be one colour, personal appointments another, kids’ activities another, and social events, parties, and dinners can have a designated colour.
Prioritising
Yearly Goal Having a yearly goal can help you achieve that big dream you have for yourself, whether this may be getting that qualification or finishing the renovations on your house. Have a section in your either your notes or any other section of the planner that you know you will look at often as this will be a reminder for your yearly goal. When planning your yearly goal think about where you are now, where you want to be and what you can do to get there. Break it down into step, something little you can do every day.
Copy unfinished tasks by re-writing unfinished tasks, transferring from week to week or month to month. This makes it obvious the things you keep putting off or aren’t prioritising. If this is occurring a lot you need to ask yourself if you need to do this task or do you want to do this. If you’ve been putting off doing it, it may be because you need to break the task down and make it goal. Try splitting up the task into more manageable chunks and have a deadline.
Be Positive Adding positive or inspiring notes I find helps me get through the week a little bit easier. They are a great way to remind yourself that everything will be alright when you feel like life in getting too much.

Townsville 2020 A CLEAR VISION FOR OUR CITY
Future projects in the Townsville 2020 Masterplan focus on boosting the local economy, benefitting the community and attracting tourism to the city. The creation of locally based world class experiences will boost economic growth and increase tourism. Townsville 2020 is all about enhancing our city and not trying to change our unique North Queensland lifestyle. Townsville 2020 is the city’s most transformative plan ever and Townsville City Council is committed to making it a reality.
Stadium Precinct The North Queensland Stadium will be a centrally located 25000 seat, multi-purpose regional stadium and is on schedule to be in operation for the start of the 2020 NRL Premiership Season. The Stadium Precinct is much more than just a home for the North Queensland Cowboys. The precinct will include a high end hotel, training field, Centre of Excellence and Rehabilitation, and student accommodation.

Mount Louisa Open Space Masterplan
Central Park will be an activated community site that is both a destination and link between the new Stadium Precinct and Townsville’s CBD.
The Mount Louisa Open Space Masterplan will revamp the area into one of Townsville’s most popular public spaces by allowing locals and tourists to take advantage of the spectacular vistas of our city and coastline. Stage 1 is focussed primarily on establishing existing walking trails and viewing platforms throughout the Mount Louisa area.
New features include improved lighting, parkland and street landscaping, CCTV security cameras and shaded areas. A 4 metre wide waterfront promenade will transform the Ross Creek area for those visiting the new Stadium.

Castle Hill Concept Plan
The Flinders Lane Project will connect the heart of the CBD to the Bus Hub via a new laneway with retail stores and cafes. The laneway will integrate with the adjoining building and provide new public toilet facilities for the inner city.
Castle Hill is an iconic landmark offering stunning views over Townsville and our coastline. Townsville has secured $1.96 million in Federal funding to support the future for Castle Hill over the next 20 years.
The completed Flinders Lane will create a vital new pedestrian link between the Bus Hub and the CBD.
Plans include a light show installation, a cafĂŠ at the summit, a zip line and a pedestrian connection to Walker Street.
Riverway Splash Water Park Townsville Entrance Statements Townsville suburbs will receive robust and drought resilient landscaped entry statements to green the city outside the Townsville CBD.
A new Splash Water Park has been proposed for Riverway as part of the Townsville 2020 Masterplan. The Concept plan proposes four new zones as well as water jets and LED lighting. New landscaping and seating will be installed for families to enjoy the river.
A consistent approach to renewing ageing city signage will create a more welcoming experience for both locals and visitors.

1 1/4 cup desiccated coconut
1/2 cup warmed, strained strawberry jam
300 millilitre whipped cream
2. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat eggs until frothy. Gradually add sugar, beating until thick and pale. 3. Continue beating until mixture holds its shape (this can take up to 10 minutes).

4. Sift flour onto paper towel. Fold lightly into egg mixture, followed by water. 5. Pour mixture evenly into pan. Bake 20-25 minutes, until sponge springs back when touched lightly with a fingertip.
9 Lamington Tips. By following these 9 simple lamington tips and tricks you are destined to have the best lamingtons on the table this Australia Day. 1. For perfectly light textured butter cake, beat the butter and sugar until very light in colour. This ensures that you’ll end up with as much aeration as possible. 2. Don’t overmix the cake batter after adding the flour. This can toughen the texture and remove the air from the cake, making the finished product too dense.
6. Turn cake onto a wire rack to cool completely. Trim edges. Cut cake into 6cm squares. 7. To make the icing, sift icing sugar and cocoa together into a large heatproof bowl. Stir in milk and butter. Place over a saucepan of gently simmering water. Heat, mixture whilst stirring, until mixture is smooth and runny. 8. Spread coconut over a shallow tray. Using a fork, dip each cake piece into chocolate icing, draining off excess. Roll in coconut to coat. Place on a wire rack and allow icing to set.
3. Trimming the edges of the cake allows all the sides to absorb the cocoa mixture evenly, to get that perfectly rich chocolate coating all over. 4. Be careful- don’t oversoak the lamingtons in the cocoa mixture, as the cake will continue to absorb the liquid, making the lamingtons soggy. 5. When cutting the lamingtons, use a small serrated knife with a gentle sawing action to get a really clean, even cut through the cake. 6. Cut the lamingtons so the base is about two-thirds up the side, with the top the remaining third. This stops the cream from oozing out due to the weight of the top! 7. If you’re making these for a gathering, save time and make unfilled lamingtons up to four days in advance. Store in an airtight container. 8. Unfilled lamingtons freeze well. Simply place in an airtight container and store in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature, and then fill. 9. Once filled, keep the lamingtons in the fridge. Remove from the fridge 20-30 minutes before serving for a softer, more flavoursome cake.
9. Split lamingtons in half horizontally. Spread bottoms with jam and cream. Position tops.

STEP 3
STEP 11
Using a 20cm (8 inch) bowl as a stencil, draw a circle on each piece of paper to act as a template for the meringue mixture. Set aside.
Use a small angled spatula to smooth out the edges if you like.
STEP 4 Sift almond meal, cocoa, cream of tartar and cornflower into a small mixing bowl, add the finely chopped chocolate. STEP 5 In a food processor whizz up all the honeycomb until the texture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add half the honeycomb to the dry ingredients/chocolate in the bowl and set the remainder aside for later. Stir all dry ingredients together thoroughly. STEP 6 Wipe the bowl of a stand mixer or large metal mixing bowl (if you are using hand-held beaters) with a little white vinegar or lemon juice to remove any traces of grease. Do the same with the whisk.
STEP 12 Bake in the oven at 200˚C/392˚F for exactly 5 minutes before turning the heat down to 150˚C/302˚F. Bake for 1 hour 15 minutes before turning off the oven completely and allowing the Pavlovas to cool completely in the oven. STEP 13 While Pavlovas are cooling, place frozen cherries in a medium-sized saucepan along with lime juice simmer over medium heat for 20 minutes. Spoon cherries into a bowl then return the cherry juice to the heat and cook until reduced by over half. Allow to cool and pour into a small serving jug STEP 14 Combine mascarpone, cream and icing sugar in a bowl and mix until combined and smooth.
STEP 7
STEP 15
Add the 9 egg whites and beat on medium speed until opaque and frothy.
To assemble the Pavlova, place the first meringue disc on a flat surface top with 1/3 cream, cooked cherry compote and fresh cherries and a sprinkling of crushed honeycomb and toasted flaked almonds. Repeat with the second and third meringue disc and all the ingredients then very carefully stack on top of each other. Drizzle top of assembled Pavlova with the reduced cherry juice when ready to serve and dust with a little icing sugar.
STEP 8 Using a large spoon add the caster sugar in separate additions beating the meringue mixture after each spoonful. Continue until all the sugar is used up and the mixture is thick, holds stiff peaks and is glossy. You should be able to hold the bowl upside down without the meringue moving. STEP 9 Add the vinegar and beat for a second or two extra then remove the bowl from the stand mixer and sprinkle in the dry ingredients, fold into the meringue using a large spoon in about 7 or 8 rotations. It doesn't need to be totally combined. STEP 10 Spoon the meringue out evenly onto the 3 lined trays and from evenly sized round discs.

The Bacon Explosion TRY THIS MOUTH-WATERING MONSTER ON AUSTRALIA DAY!
Step 1
Bacon Explosion - Bacon wrapped meat stuffed with bacon and cheese.
Prep time: 30 mins Cook time: 1-hour 15 mins Total time: 1-hour 45 mins
The first step is to foil line a pan and make the internal bacon weave. This weave will be a 5×6. Line up five slices, and then start weaving bacon in until you get a 5 by 6. Bake this weave in the oven at 200 degrees until mostly done.
Step 2
Ingredients
29 slices Thick cut bacon
400g Steak
280g Pork Sausage
110g cheddar cheese, shredded

The Townsville Zine
The next step is to make the meat! You could also buy the meat but I enjoy grinding. This is just the food grinder attachment to the Kitchen Aid mixer. I used Round Eye steak, Jimmy Dean’s Sausage and 4 pieces of bacon.
Step 5
Step 3
Next, lay some cling wrap on a board and use your hands to form a rectangle. Then add some seasoning to the meat.
Step 6
I used the fine grinding attachment and ground the meat twice. You put it through the first time and then mix it by hand, then run it through again. Don’t bother cutting the fat off the meat; it gets incorporated by the grinder.
Step 4
At this point your 5×6 weave should be ready. You don’t want it to be completely hard because this one needs to be flexible.
Step 7
Here is a picture of the final product!
Initials M.B Date 5/12 Copyright https://cavemanketo.com/bacon-mother-ing-explosion/ www.pngtree.com
The Townsville Zine
Carefully move the bacon on top of the meat. I used what is called a fish spatula but anything will work.
Step 8
At this point you can put anything into the middle. I fresh ground some cheddar and threw it in there!
Step 9
At this point, it is easier to work with if it is a little cold. So, I wrapped it in foil and put it in the refrigerator. Also, during the process I tried to compress it as much as possible with the foil.
Step 11
Now we get into the main show. You should have gained some experience weaving on the first one. This one is important and make sure it is tight. Also, make sure you buy really consistent bacon. I actually look through a couple of packages at the store. If it is cut or larger on one side, it makes wrapping hard and inconsistent. I also seasoned this part.
Step 12
At this point, you need to roll the meat up. Try and have as clean a roll as possible. Merge the ends together so that it is one consistent entity.
Step 10
Now, take the meat out of the refrigerator and place it approximately as shown. Then wrap the weave over top and tuck it in on the other side. Wrapping on a diagonal makes a much nicer final product. It also works better when you cut it.
Initials M.B Date 5/12 Copyright https://cavemanketo.com/bacon-mother-ing-explosion/ www.pngtree.com
The Townsville Zine
Step 13
Here is what it looks like before the oven, beautiful isn’t it! I used the same pan as before for the first weave hence why it is dirty. I put it on a rack so the bottom cooks as well.
Here’s the Bacon Explosion out of the oven, man did it turn out well! I really like the diagonal wrapping, I think it gives it a solid look and better coverage than a straight 90degree wrap.
Step 14
And there you have it! I baked it for around 60 minutes on 200 degrees. However, I mainly checked it until the internal temperature reached 75 degrees.
Here is the beautiful inside. You can see the cheese, bacon, then meat then bacon!

Developers Ahoy! Global Game Jam 2020
In 2009 a group of developers created an independent game development event known as Global Game Jam, later in 2012 was dubbed “the largest [game jam] in the world” by the Guinness Book of World Records, boasting over an incredible 10,600 participants, over 242 locations, developing 2209 total games. In 2019 GGJ recorded over 47,000 participants, 860 locations (113 countries), developing well over 9000 games. GGJ will continue in 2020 from the 31st of January to the 2nd of February. The concept of GGJ was inspired by the first Danish jam, Nordic Game Jam, which took place in Denmark’s capital city Copenhagen. Both jams are supported by the world’s International Game Developers Association (IGDA). The Global Game Jam can be located anywhere, anyone can host a jam, and anyone can participate, it does not require a great knowledge of games or development, writers, artists, programmers, developers, an average Joe coming for a look. It does not matter your personal experience or skills you may possess. Jammers are given a topic at the beginning, 2018 saw the topic “Transmission”, 2019 was “What home means to you.” The topic is a guideline for the game theme and setting. Jammers within the span of 48 hours complete their game, later presenting it to the group and uploading for judging. GGJ 2020 begins on the 31st of January to the 2nd of February, Jam signups close on the 12th of January.

DIY: Button Bowl AN EASY DIY FOR KIDS
MATERIALS: Lots of Buttons Balloon Vase (or any container where you can stand the balloon) White Glue (Elmer’s glue) Paint brush
Initials L.B Date 12/19 Copyright https://craft.ideas2live4.com/
You could also use shells, leaves, left over fabric
The Townsville Zine
INSTRUCTIONS Blow the balloon up to your desired size of the bowl.
After you have put all the buttons, leave it standing on the vase for around 5 hours to dry completely.
Make it stand on the vase, while you brush half of the balloon with glue. Let it dry completely. This will serve as a protective coating for the bowl.
Then add a third coating of glue. Let it dry overnight. You can even do a fourth coating if you want to be sure of its strength. Just make sure you let it dry well before removing the balloon.
When dry, brush with glue the second time around, and then stick the buttons one by one and as close to each other as possible.
Don’t pop the balloon! Use the scissors to make a small cut on it and gently let air out. And there you have it!

ď ś Measuring tape ď ś scissors
INSTRUCTIONS Step 1 MEASURING DOWELS While measuring and drilling the dowels, ensure all the holes are level and lined up with each other so that the frame is perfectly square. On two of the 1 1/4-inch dowels, measure and mark at 2 inches and 3 1/2 inches from each end. The third 1 1/4-inch dowel will only need to be marked at 3 1/2 inches from each end. Step 2 DRILLING THE HOLES Drill a hole at each mark on each 1 1/4-inch dowel. Start with a small drill bit and work your way up to 5/8 inch. A spade bit or dowel jig makes this much easier.
Step 3 SAND THE HOLES Sand the holes to remove any splinters from drilling. Step 4 SLIDE THE DOWELS TOGETHER Make a square frame for the seat by sliding each of the small dowels into the 5/8-inch holes on the large dowels. Leave about 1-inch overlap on each end
Step 5 SECURE THE FRAME Drill a small pilot hole where the dowels meet. Using a 1-inch screw, secure the two pieces together. Step 6 HANG THE FRAME Before starting the macrame, temporarily hang the frame in a place where you can easily stand or sit to knot the ropes. Step 7 WRAP THE CORD AROUND THE DOWELS Using the 1/4-inch cord, cut 16 26-foot pieces. It sounds like a lot but as you know, the cord shortens quickly. Pick up one cord and fold it in half. Wrap the loop around the dowel from the front to back. Pull the tails through the loop. Continue with all 16 strands of cord. Once they're all hanging, you'll have 32 strands.
Step 8 CROSS THE CORDS FROM LEFT TO RIGHT To create the seat, you'll be using a simple square knot. Starting with the first four cords, take the left cord and cross it over the center two, then under the right cord.
Initials: N.T Date 12/19 Copyright https://www.hunker.com/12601283/how-to-make-a-macrame-hammock
The Townsville Zine
Step 12 REPEAT THE PATTERN Now the pattern repeats. Just like in the beginning, tie a square knot with the first four cords and work your way across. Then use the third cord to start the next row Step 13 KNOT UNTIL THE SEAT MEASURES 45 INCH LONG Continue knotting until the seat is about 45inches long. The finished macrame needs to be long Step 9 CROSS THE CORDS FROM RIGHT TO LEFT Take the right cord and cross it under the center two cords and up through the hole, passing over the left cord. Step 10 COMPLETE THE SQUARE KNOT To complete the second half of the knot, you'll do the same thing in reverse. Take the right cord and cross it over the center two, then under the left cord. Then take the left cord and cross it under the center two cords and up through the hole, passing over the right cord. Pull the knot tight. Continue this with all the cords.
Step 14 ATTACH THE SEAT TO THE FRAME To attach the ends to the bottom of the frame, wrap all four cords from each section around the dowel and tie a knot. Step 15 TIE A SECOND KNOT Tie a second knot by splitting the strand into two. Pull it as tight as you can.er than the frame.
Step 11 START WITH THE THIRD CORD The next row also uses the same square knot but starts with the third cord. You'll be using two strands from each section. When knotting them together, make sure to keep everything even. Continue this until to reach the end of your cords. Step 16 CUT THE ENDS OF THE CORD Cut the ends of the cords to the length desired. You can fray the ends or leave them as is. Step 17 CUT ½ INCH ROPE Cut one 120-inch piece of 1/2-inch rope. Fold it in half and tie a knot a few inches from the top, creating a loop.
Initials: N.T Date 12/19 Copyright https://www.hunker.com/12601283/how-to-make-a-macrame-hammock
The Townsville Zine
Step 18 STRING THE ROPE THROUGH THE DOWEL, At this point, if you can hang the rope in a temporary place by the loop, it will be much easier to make sure all the ropes are even moving forward. Using the leftover third dowel, string the rope through each hole and tie a knot, leaving about 20 inches in between the loop and dowel.
Step 20 STRING THE ROPE THROUGHT THE BOTTOM OF THE FRAME Cut two 65-inches pieces of 1/2-inch-thick rope. Starting at the bottom of the frame, string one rope on each side through the hole and tie a loose knot. This time, the knot should be below the dowel with the rope running up.
Step 19 STRING THE ROPE THROUGHT THE TOP OF THE FRAME Continue with the same piece of rope. String it down through the top of the frame on each side and tie a loose knot, leaving 30 inches in between the two dowels. You want a loose knot because once you hang the finished chair; you'll need to make some minor adjustments.
Step 21 TIE THE ROPE AROUND THE THIRD DOWEL Run the rope all the way up to the top third dowel. Wrap the rope around the dowel and tie a loose knot, leaving 60 inches between the third dowel and the bottom of the frame. Step 22 HANG THE SEAT AND ADJUST THE ROPES Now you can hang the chair in a more permanent spot using a sturdy hook on your porch or deck. Make sure all the ropes are even. If you need to make any adjustments, this would be the time to do so. Then tighten all of your knots. Use caution when sitting in the hammock for the first time. The ropes will expand a little and form to your weight. Once everything feels right, cut off any excess rope hanging below the knots or fray them to hang free.

Glitter glue for decorating (optional) Scissors Pencil Ruler INSTRUCTIONS STEP 1 Choose two coordinating papers, and cut them both in half along the longest edge. (The size is now 5.5 x 8.5″.)
STEP 5 Add a drop of glue onto the knot you tied on the handle so that the string won’t slide off of the handle. STEP 6 Place the side of the kite that you want to be the bottom (the side that will hold the paper straw frame) face up on the table. Using a ruler and a pencil, connect the corners to draw a cross. Squeeze a bead of craft glue along the cross. STEP 7 Place the straws into the glue to form your kite frame, and allow the glue to dry for a few minutes. (Try to get the knot of the twine about even with the center of the cross before you press down the straw.)
STEP 2 Using a very strong glue stick, cover the back of one sheet with glue and place the other colour on top. Smooth the page down, and make sure there are no bubbles. STEP 3 Using a ruler, measure and mark a spot at the top and bottom of your paper at 2.75″. Measure and mark the long edges at 3″. Use a ruler to connect the four marks and draw lines to make the kite shape. Cut out the kite.
STEP 8 Cut a 20″ (or longer) piece of light-weight ribbon or string to make the kite tail. Thread it through the long straw, and add a bead of glue at the top of the straw to keep the string from falling out. STEP 9 Tie a few decorative ribbons to the tail, and allow all glue to dry completely. Optional–Decorate with glitter glue.
STEP 4 Cut a length of twine or string, and tie one end to a paper straw about 2/3 of the way down. Cut the second straw into thirds to get three pieces. (They don’t have to be exactly even. Just eyeball it.) Tie the other end of the twine to the middle of one of the paper straw pieces. This will be the kite handle.

DIY Outdoor Rug MADE FROM BROKEN OR OLD GARDEN HOSES
Have a few worn-out garden hoses you have been meaning to get rid of? Do not throw them out just yet! Using nothing more than some old hoses and a bag of zip ties, you can create a practical outdoor rug that will add a splash of colour to your back porch or patio.
Once you use the entirety of your first hose, it's time to tie on the next one. There is no science as to how many zip-ties you should use and how far apart to space them. To create an ombre effect, you can also use hoses of varying colours.
This crafty waterproof rug is actually supersimple to make. Start by cutting off the metal ends of the hoses. Then, fold your first hose in half and zip-tie it together. Then, keep wrapping the slack end of the hose around the centre hoses to make an echoing pattern.
Just like that, you've made a waterproof, repurposed, and eco-friendly piece of outdoor decor. You could also make a smaller one for a garage or mudroom.

INSTRUCTIONS Begin by downloading the template. Reduce or enlarge the template for a variety of pinwheel sizes, palm size or giant…. you decide. First glue your contrast paper onto your craft paper, and with a scissors or craft knife use the cutting template to cut out your pinwheel square.
And then start folding in the corners. Make sure the holes are all lined up.
Put a drop of glue under each corner to hold the corners together while you on the handle
Cut diagonal lines in from each corner as shown (the guidelines for the length of line are on the template)
MAKE THE STICK AND SPINNING MECHANISM For small palm size pinwheels it’s super easy – just bend a pin and stick it in to the top of a pencil eraser
Next punch every second corner, as shown, and another hole in the centre of the pinwheel.
For the giant ones use a wooden rod, eraser, pin and button

Chop a cube off the eraser, dig out a little hole in the eraser and push in the stick.
Thread the pin through the pinwheel holes; they used a button so it would prevent the pin head making its way back through the holes.
When the pin feeds back through the holes it simply continues through the eraser cube and depending on how long the pin is you might need to bend it back through the eraser to protect little hands from any pointy bits

DIY: Driftwood Seahorse Cabinet of curiosities
Instructions
Materials Pieces of straightish driftwood, I had about a shopping bag full and had lots left over Stiff Cardboard Pencil Ultility Knife Hot glue gun
Initials JTC Date 12/19 Copyright creativeinchicago.com
1. Sketch your seahorse shape on your cardboard, mine is about 36″ by 16″. I copied the shape from an abstract watercolour of seahorses 2. Cut out your shape using a utility knife. You can see from the picture I taped two pieces of cardboard together to get the height I wanted. 3. Sort through your driftwood and start laying it over your cardboard, this process is really trial and error. I tried to keep the placement tight over the seahorse’s belly but was quite happy to have a more ragged look over the back. I kept the driftwood pieces mostly parallel. 4. Once you are happy with your choice and placement of the driftwood, fire up your hot glue gun and start sticking everything down. I started at the tail and worked up. 5. For the eye I used a driftwood walnut.

DIY Seashell Specimen Art VACATION MEMORIES
What you’ll need: -butterfly seashells (as many as you need to fill your frame + extras because some are sure to break apart) -hot glue gun -toothpick -scrapbook or watercolour paper -picture frame How to make: 1. Lay out your collection of seashells. Look at both sides of the shells. Some shells are more colourful and patterned on the inside and some on the outside of the shell. Decide which direction you want your shells facing. Way 1: Inside of shells facing down or Way 2: Inside of shells facing out. I think way 2 looks more like butterflies but the
Initials JTC Date 12/19 Copyright https://www.petalandply.com/
colouring of the shells may really determine which direction they will face!
The Townsville Zine
2. Use the cardboard in the frame as a stencil to cut out your scrapbook or watercolour paper. A paper with a slight texture, pattern, or colour will work perfectly.
3. To keep from marking up the paper I placed it back into my frame and flipped it onto the table face up to determine shell placement. Simply lay out the shells directly on the paper and rearrange until you get the spacing and colour placement you desire.
Initials JTC Date 12/19 Copyright https://www.petalandply.com/
4. Regardless of which direction your shells are facing (up or down) simply add a dot of hot glue over the joint of each shell and place it back in its spot on the paper. If the shell joint breaks you can still use it just be sure to dot each piece with glue and line up the joining spot carefully. Gently press the shell into the paper to secure.
5. While glue is still hot use a toothpick to lift out any excess that seeps out from under the shell.

INSTUCTIONS
10-12 drops of orange or lemon essential oils (or your own favourite)
STEP 1 Place your glass bowl on your scale, hit tare.
SUPPLIES
STEP 2 Add all ingredients (one-by-one, hitting tare in between) EXCEPT the zinc oxide, which you add at the end.
Micro wave or double boiler
STEP 3 Place glass bowl over pot of shallow, slightly simmering H2O. Melt ingredients completely (stir with a whisk to help it along)

STEP 4 Carefully remove from stove and wipe down condensation on bowl (you do not want H2O getting into your product) STEP 5 Place bowl on scale, hit tare. STEP 6 Add zinc oxide, slowly, until you get to 40g. Again, add this slowly, as the zinc settles the amount will increase on your scale.

Here is a good guide if you wish to change up the level of protection (but remember, adding more or less zinc oxide will change the ‘feel’ of the sunscreen, making it thicker or thinner): SPF 2-5: Use 5% zinc oxide SPF 6-11: Use 10% zinc oxide SPF 12-19: Use 15% zinc oxide SPF 20+: Use 20% zinc oxide Using non-nano, uncoated zinc oxide is of a higher quality and you get better results.
STEP 2 1/4 cup aloe vera gel STEP 3 1/2 teaspoon vitamin e oil STEP 4 2 tablespoons fractionated coconut oil STEP 5 Add the following essential oils: 10 drops lavender essential oil 2 drops peppermint essential oil (substitute spearmint essential oil for the peppermint if this will be used on or around kids under 6) STEP 6 Mix well and pour into 4 ounce spray bottle Keep a bottle in the refrigerator
SOME GOOD INFO
Carrier oils dilute the concentrated essential oils so they can be applied to the skin without side effects. Remember, you need three parts to an excellent body lotion: base butter, carrier oil, and essential oils. Jojoba oil is not greasy, making it a wonderful choice for skincare products. In fact, jojoba oil very closely mimics our own skin’s sebum, so it is a welcome, all natural antioxidant ingredient for our skin! Almond oil is gentle (yet powerful), excellent for all skin types, and smells great. Almond oil is an extremely emollient substance, meaning that it easily makes skin very pliable, supple, and very hydrated.
The recipe as written here contains approximately 20% zinc oxide (just slightly less, depending on how well you measure). This gives you at least a 20 SPF. (Coconut oil has a natural SPF factor, too, so that’s a helpful addition to ‘up’ the SPF).
Coconut oil is composed mainly of mediumchain fatty acids (MCFA). What does this mean? Instead of being mainly made up of long-chain fatty acids (which are the bad ones), our body can much more easily process MCFA and use them for good in our system.

Sensory Summer Play SUMMER KIDS
Looking to keep baby distracted this summer while still learning motor skills, these simple sensory activates are easy to make and also all edible.
Supplies
What is sensory play?
Directions
Sensory play encourages motor development which is the gradual process by which a child gains use and coordination of the large muscles of the legs, trunk, and arms, and the smaller muscles of the hands. A baby begins to experience new awareness through sight, touch, taste, smell, and hearing.
1. Add the colouring to the water.
Water Beads
Baby Pool Container
2. Soak 1 Tablespoon of the basil seeds, stirring occasionally. Within about 5 minutes, they will have absorbed all the water. 3. When you are ready to play with them, add a little extra water to your container to allow them to move a bit more fluidly (otherwise they tend to stick to each other) 4. Place baby and container of coloured water beads in pool for easier clean up.
Finger Paint
Ingredients 1 Tbsp of this Basil Seed 1 and 1/4 cup water Food Colouring

Ingredients Greek yogurt Food colouring
3. As baby place the coloured ice in the pool the water will change colour.
Gelatine Balls
Supplies Containers Plastic sheet (shower curtain) Directions 1. Mix the Greek yogurt with the food colouring to get your desired colours. 2. Place each colour into containers. 3. Lay down a plastic sheet and watch baby go wild.
Coloured Ice
Ingredients Jelly (various colours) Supplies Ice Ball Makers Large tray or tub Bowls Directions
Ingredients Water Food colouring Supplies Ice cube tray Baby Pool Directions
1. Mix up the jelly according to the pack’s instructions and add it to your ice ball moulds. (If the weather is very warm I’d recommend using a little less water than the packet says, so the balls will hold their shape better in the heat.) 2. I love using ice ball moulds in two different sizes to add variety to the sensory activity. I also pour some jelly into cereal bowls to make large semi-spheres too. 3. Once the jelly is set simply empty the ice ball moulds out on to a large tray or in tub and let the sensory play begin.
1. Add the colouring to the ice tray before filling with water to get a more even disbursement of colour. 2. Fill the pool with water then put the container of coloured cubes inside the water.

For Serving
Corn or flour tortillas, warmed

The Townsville Zine
Method 1. Place the beef roast in your slow cooker (a 4 quart-sized insert or larger will work) and season with the salt. Set aside.
2. To make the barbecue sauce, warm the vegetable oil in a large non-stick pan over medium-high heat. Add the diced onions and cook, stirring frequently, until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Add the garlic and all the remaining ingredients, stirring to combine. Let the sauce simmer for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally while it cooks. Remove the skillet from the heat.
4. Once the beef roast has finished cooking and is completely tender, shred it apart into smaller pieces using two forks. There will initially be excess cooking liquid in your slow cooker, but the shredded beef pieces will absorb most of it within 30 minutes.
5. Combine all the ingredients for the salsa in a small bowl. Cover and refrigerate it until you’re ready to use it.
6. To serve, fill the warmed tortillas with some of the shredded beef and top with the mango salsa. Enjoy immediately. 3. Pour the barbecue sauce over the beef roast. Place the lid on your slow cooker and turn it on. Cook the beef roast until it’s completely tender and can be easily pulled apart with two forks, about 10 hours on the “low” setting or 6 hours on the “high” setting.
NOTE: Leftover shredded beef and mango salsa can be stored in separate airtight containers in your refrigerator for up to 2 days.

Simple Vegan Meatballs Recipes
Ingredients FOR MEATBALLS
1/2 cup vegan bread crumbs (gluten-free for GF eaters // or sub almond meal)
1/2 cup white onion (minced)
2 Tbsp your favourite marinara or tomato sauce
3 cloves garlic (minced)
Olive oil (for sautĂŠing)
1 batch flax egg
Salt & pepper (to taste)
8 ounces tempeh* (or as recipe is written, sub 1 heaping cup rinsed and drained chickpeas for similar result)
FOR COATING
1/3 cup vegan parmesan cheese 2 tsp Italian seasonings (or 1/2 tsp each dried basil and oregano) 1/4 cup fresh parsley (optional)
JW Date 12/19 Minimalist Baker
1/3 cup vegan bread crumbs (gluten-free for GF eaters) 1/3 cup vegan parmesan cheese
The Townsville Zine
Directions 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 C) and prepare flax egg in a small dish. 2. In a large, deep skillet, sauté onion and garlic in 1/2 Tbsp olive oil (as original recipe is written // adjust if altering batch size) over medium heat until soft and translucent - about 3 minutes. Set aside. 3. Add tempeh to food processor and pulse to break down. Then add sautéed garlic, onion, and remaining ingredients (except olive oil) and mix, scraping down sides as needed. You want it to form into a mouldable “dough.” 4. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. The tempeh will come across as a little bitter, but once coated, baked and served with marinara it's not nearly as apparent. (NOTE: Depending on how salty your vegan parmesan cheese is, you may need to add a little salt and pepper at this point. However, I didn’t find it necessary). 5. Scoop out 1 Tbsp amounts of dough and roll into balls. At this time, heat the same skillet you used earlier to medium heat. 6. Mix remaining bread crumbs and
JW Date 12/19 Minimalist Baker
parmesan cheese together in a shallow dish. Add tempeh balls one or two at a time and roll to coat. 7. Add enough olive oil to form a thin layer on the bottom of your hot skillet, then add your coated tempeh balls in two batches, as to not crowd the pan. Brown for about 5 minutes total, shaking the pan to roll them around to brown all sides. 8. Add browned meatballs to a baking sheet and add to the oven to bake for about 15 minutes, or longer if desired for a crispier result. 9. At this time, prep any pasta your want to serve with your meatballs, as well as your favourite marinara sauce (I love this pizza sauce). 10. Once meatballs are deep golden brown and fairly firm to the touch, remove from oven. To serve, top cooked pasta with meatballs and pour over marinara sauce. Top with another sprinkle of vegan parmesan cheese and fresh parsley. Leftovers will keep in the fridge for up to a few days, though best when fresh.

Fantasy Short Story THE DRUID‟S EYE by Travis Wilson
Four friends Sarah, Teagan, Michael and Josh; break through the door of their own place skipping their way to the car, with their bags, hats and wrapped up in their togs, it is summer and the best time to hit the beach. From the doorway Sarah and Teagan lob the bags at the boys, catching them like circus clowns they swing the bags into the boot of the car with a flourish of their arms, slamming the boot shut with precision. Sarah drags the door closed behind them, putting the key into the keyhole and turning it until the large metal lock clicks shut. Running over and diving into the side doors of the car, warming up the monstrous engine and shooting off to the beach. The loud vehicle skids to a stop against the edge of the beach where bitumen and sand unites. A leg of each occupants presses against the warm bitumen one of them aren‟t wearing any thongs, clearly from the loud sound of pain and retreating foot back into the car. It returns with a thong attached to it. At the same time, they all stand both feet on the ground, ready to raid the beach and have some fun, dangling their bags and blanket over their shoulders like a cape. Resting their gear out on the sandy beach, they strip down into their togs and dash for the water. Michael takes a little longer to get to the water, while he tries to get his shirt off he trips on his own foot, getting a face full of wet sand. The group, already up to their waists in the water; reply to the incident with an

audible “oooo!” followed by laughter as Michael rolls onto his back. “Nice work Mikey!” Josh yells from the water. Struggling to get up and tripping over a couple more times, he finally makes it to the blue and white fluffy sheet of water, cleaning down his dirty, sand covered person, diving up out of the surface pushing his wet hair over his head. The group come together in a shroud of laughter. As nightfall passes over top, the group builds a fire, to fend off the dark and the insects. The group have a drink and make up some silly horror stories to scare one another, a competition of the ages whoever gets to sleep first wins. Michael is attempting his bombing run and telling a story of chaos, deception, murder, and horror… about as cliché as the rest. A little flash coming from a large stack of rocks against the side of the hill backing the beach; catches Sarah off guard. Not thinking much about it, she goes back to focusing on the story. Michael continues his riveting story, constantly stammering his own words from frightening himself. Sarah looks to the side again where the flash came from. Looking back at her in the darkness over the other side of a log; is two little glowing blue eyes, and two large floppy but strong standing ears. The black shadow tilts its head slightly. Sarah drops her towel on the log next to the fire and slowly approaches the shadow, as she gets closer it dashes back a couple metres, and turns around, planting its bottom in the sand and raising its head slightly

smelling the air. It gently shakes its blackened body, and following its body, bioluminescent glowing stripes down from the middle of its head to tail, revealing its true shape out of the darkness. The creature is a hybrid of a hare, with a sugar glider, massive eyes with glowing blue light reflecting from its iris like a blue ring light. For a second Sarah is stuck in a trance looking into its soul, until the eyes of the creature snap shut, and if a puff of light glowing dust the creature has fled, and standing behind her are her three friends, confused and curious. Wide-eyed she spins around to them, almost tripping over her own feet. “Uhh, Sarah, why are you over here?” asks Teagan, confused at first she then replies, “Oh, there was something over here.” Sarah turns and looks over the area, scanning back and forth, with no evidence there was anything in front of her. Careful thought and rubbing her face hoping she was just seeing things and it was not what it was, she shakes it off and they all return to their campfire and continue to tell each other stories. Everyone starts slowly nodding off as another flash of light passes Sarah‟s face, which takes her by surprise. This time she would not miss the opportunity to discover what this creature really was! She takes her jacket and wraps it over her shoulders, taking a step over the log chairs toward the last place she remembers the creature resided. The others are too out of it to notice Sarah walking away from the camp. As she approaches the halfsubmerged log, the creature appears out of thin air in a puff of blue glowing dust, looking up at her with big eyes and a small squeak. She kneels down and slowly stretches out her hand toward the creature, at first it hesitates to allow her; but as soon as she takes her hand away, it props up on its hind legs and reaches for her hand, almost slipping off the log letting out a small squeal, but manages to regain its balance. Once again she reaches out to the creature, it jumps onto her hand and then climbs up her arm to her shoulder where it sits, sapping the warmth from Sarah‟s shoulder. As Sarah decides to return to the group, the creature tugs on her hair, leans over and Initials T.W Date 12/19 Copyright
points out into the darker rocky hills. The beach curves around like a banana, the inside facing out toward the sea, at each end are sharp rock covered walls, with several cutting paths leading into shallow caves. Most of these paths are sectioned off and warning signs litter the area, for years it has been declared dangerous to venture into the caves due to collapse. The creature leaps of Sarah‟s shoulder, sliding under the barrier; it looks down the path, and turns to Sarah, signalling her to follow. She jumps over the barrier, picking up the creature; it jumps up and curls up on her shoulder. She makes the trip back to her friends, who are all still unaware of her absence. She starts with Teagan, who is out cold by the side of the fire, curled up and warm. She leans down and rouses her, as Teagan slowly wakes she spots the little glowing fur ball, her jaw drops, and she lets out a massive scream, waking up the guys. Josh sits up suddenly with his blanket over his head, Michael falls off the log he has fallen asleep on, his head lodged into the sand. Both in tandem swiftly standing, Josh in his hand, still covered in the blanket; holds a charred, embered stick from the fire pit, ready for action. The creature yelps and climbs under Sarah‟s hair, its glowing eyes shining through the strands, like that of a protective jail cell. “What is that?!” Yells Teagan. The creature refuses to come out from behind Sarah, so she reaches under her hair and grips the little creature as it stubbornly retreats. “Come on. It‟s okay.” She calmly coaxes it out, still holding itself to her arm looking out at the humans looking into its soul. “Honestly, I have no idea what this is. But it came to me before, and it‟s shown me something. I am gonna go check it out; I hope you guys might wanna join.” Sarah explains to her baffled compatriots. One at a time, they climb over the barrier attempting not to break it, to everyone‟s surprise Michael does not trip over the barrier. The cave gets darker the deeper it travels, a chilling wind passes through them. They all pull out their phones turning on the built-in torch, it lights up the moistened walls of the cave, condensation where the cold air meets the warm air from outside. The group stops to think

for a second, but Josh takes it upon himself to be a hero, jogging forward down the cave, coming to a sudden stop all motion in his body stopped in seconds against an invisible surface like glass. They hear him fall back on his bottom, holding his head. They run to his rescue. “What happened?!” Asks Teagan, as she rests her hand on his shoulder. He lets out a huge groan. “I just hit nothing! Ugh! My head!” Michael walks past him and lightly runs into the same problem, only not with some much force, so nothing but a little whack to his big schnoz. It takes him a moment to realise, to which he turns around to the others. “I can‟t get through either.” He returns to the group. Sarah gets up and walks toward the dark invisible wall, as she reaches out; the air around her hand begins to ripple. The wall begins to shine like a rainbow; it slowly fades as Sarah lands her final step. The cave goes quiet, but the cool wind flows into a warmer breeze, shallow white light bouncing through the damp cave walls toward the group. Teagan, Michael and Josh are still sitting down, looking toward Sarah, who is in shock, swinging her head around trying to find the wall, maybe it was a mirage, and maybe she is still asleep. “Maybe, it‟s „cause he‟s sitting on my shoulder?” she asks the surrounding air. The three all confused return to looking at each other. Sarah takes another step, which puts the group on edge, prompting Michael to reach out slightly even though he is too far away from her. “Sarah!” He yells. Stumbling over Josh, as he runs after her; falling into the mud and dust. The light shining off Sarah‟s face becomes a harsher blue pastel as she furthers herself down the caves to the source of the haunting bright. The creature still hung on her shoulder props up, smelling the surrounding air, making small jittering sounds as they approach. Sarah is blinded as she traverses a white wall of fog. Once her sight returns; she is thrust upon a deep fractured valley filled with trees of different colours and species, creaks running smoothly shaping the valley floor, young and old creatures of different breeds and mixture of earthen animals; lap from the flowing waterways, their glowing figures help light the Initials T.W Initials T.W Date 12/19 Date 12/19 Copyright

world around them. The younger the creatures the darker their light is, the wisest looking creatures light the way for young. Michael follows through and is too just as surprised by what he sees, his jaw practically touching the valley floor. He turns to Sarah and from his mouth, a horrific girlish scream pours out! Looking in the same direction as Michael, both forced to look upward, they both spot a giant darkened figure from the shadows, not moulded from any human or humanoid shape they know. A wooden stump slams down beside them, thick roots protruding from the round stump. From the shadows two big blue globes of light shine brightly, from those, like water; the light trails and outlines a large face with expressions, a moustache and beard, light glowing from its nostrils and mouth. It picks up speed and spreads to small cracks up its body, the light revealing it as a large tree. It leans down to the pair, staring at Sarah for a moment before its wooden face bears a huge creaking smile. In a deep booming but excited voice, it speaks! “You‟re here!” She raises her eyebrows. “Huh?” The creature on her shoulder stands up and holds its arms out to the big giant. “No little one, you are her guardian now. You are the granddaughter of Steven Craws are you not?” Taking a step forward and projecting her voice, “Yes! I am Sarah Craws!” The giant is able to muster up a stronger smile upon hearing this. “You are a druid, like your grandfather, and his family before him.” Swiftly she replies “A what?” The giant gives a presenting gesture out into the valley. “Is it such a shock you chose to become a veterinarian or that you love the outdoors, or that nature makes you calm and collected during stressful times? You are connected to the land, the animals, and the soul of Mother Nature. Welcome to the Druid‟s Eye!” From their perspective more of the valley reveals itself, the fracture through the middle represents the iris, the sides of the valley carved by the winds shaped like convex lenses outward from the iris. The giant turns to Sarah. “They need a watchful eye, a protector, this is all yours now.” Looking out into the valley in confusion replies with a “What?!”
