Angel-Paws Inc. Animal Rescue NQ
Angel-Paws Inc. is a Townsville based charity that specialises in providing abandoned and rejected animals treatment and loving to ensure they are able to recover and given to a good home. The operations of Angel-Paws Inc. are run entirely by volunteers who give up their time to ensure these neglected animals are given the treatment they need to be healthy and find their forever home. They are entirely committed to making sure this happens with their no-kill policy.
How It All Began The motivation to wanna make a difference in the rescuing of animals came to Angel Paws Inc. founder, Ayla Watt in 2009 when she had purchased an 11 week old puppy from a backyard breeder for $100. Nugget had a number of medical issues that had become more apparent as she began to grow, the worst of them being hip dysplasia in both hips. Ayla had years of prior experience working for animal rescue groups and knew that if Nugget had not received the correct treatment, she would have not been rehomed due to failing the medical tests that determine whether animals are suitable for rehoming. From this experience, Ayla had decided she wanted to start her own animal rescue and take a step in the right direction in comparison to how other rescues are run.
The Difference in Angel-Paws Inc. Due to the fact that Angel-Paws Inc. does not have a central shelter, volunteer foster carers open up their homes to look after any animals that require care. As long as a carer is available, any animal can be helped regardless of their age, sex, size, breed or temperament. Angel-Paws Inc. aims to give a second chance to ANY animal that needs it. They will also ensure that all animals leave their care vetchecked, parasite treated, micro-chipped and desexed. A house check is also done to ensure that after an animal leaves the care of an Angel-Paws Inc. carer, they will be in a safe and suitable environment. As Angel-Paws Inc. are a charity, they only accept animals that have been given up or abandoned. They work with vets across North Queensland as far north as Cairns, west as Charters Towers and as far south as Bowen. This includes coastal communities in the area such as Palm Island. They also work with council pounds and pet owners who were unable to look after their animals due to no fault of their own. Once an animal is in the care of Angel-Paws Inc; they will work with vets, animal specialists and foster carers to ensure all animals get the best treatment to receive their second chance.

Charity Water Not-For-Profit Charity Spotlight
Who is Chairty: Water? Charity: Water is a not-for-profit organisation that was founded by Scott Harrison, a nightclub promoter turned philanthropist. Charity: Water help the millions of people who live without safe drinking water in countries like Ethiopia, Rwanda and Malawi to bring a better future to the people who live in these countries.
The Burden people who live without clean water live in rural areas, far away from towns, cities and other villages. Their only source of water is an open well often a few hours away from the village and more often than not in dangerous places.
From what I can tell Charity: Water seems to be a force for good in the world even going as far to put 100% of all public donations into the charity and their projects not to be confused as all donations as funding from private companies are used to pay off overhead.
Open wells contain water that is unsafe to drink often harboring deadly bacteria and diseases. The task of collecting water is typically the burden of the female populace of the villages that are located in these rural areas, the hours it takes to collect the water leaves no time for school or a job which heavily impacts the community of the village in many ways but the most prominent impact is the overall education of the village.
Open Wells
The burden of the residents of these villages is enormous, working their hardest just to survive and to them surviving is progress, but it shouldn’t be like this.
Villages that Charity: Water have visited have had open wells somewhere nearby that they secure water from, people might think that is a solution, but its not. Open wells can not only run dry but they also harbor one of humanities deadliest foes: Disease, one of the biggest killers of humanity since the dawn of time. The waters of these open wells often infect people with sickness giving them diahrea and for the residents of these villages who are severly malnourished often than not this is the last straw, the sickness ravaging a body that doesn’t have the nutrients to defend itself.

Why Clean Water? So why provide water instead of food? Disease from dirty water causes more death per year than any form of violence including war, sadly 43% of those deaths are children under the age of five. Charity: Water Aims to bring clean and safe drinking water closer to the villages, which not only improves the health of the village but also cuts the hours the female populace have to walk to gather water, giving the women and children of the villages their precious time back to pour into the community via going to school to get an education or jobs to earn money. Clean water isn’t just important for humans its also important for plant life and animals, water for livestock and crops are very important for any human settlement since not only do these two things produce food for the populace of the village but also sparks economic growth as food can be traded for money or other commodaties.
The Water Crisis Even though Water is the most essential basic need for most life on earth, roughly 844 million humans live without clean water, that’s over twice the population of The United States of America even though currently on earth there is only 5 cubic kilometers of water being used out of the 14 cubic kilometers of fresh drinking water, the unequal distribution of water on earth has made water a scarce resource in some parts of the world even though in theory there is more than enough water to support 9 billion more people. From Central Australia to sub-Saharan Africa and Asia’s teeming mega cities, water is scarce. People are struggling to access the clean water they need for drinking, cooking, bathing, hand-washing, and growing their food.
The Future is Bright Although the future seems bleak we can’t forget that there are people out there who are working hard to ensure our future is secured. Charity: Water is passionate about solving the water crisis humanity faces, as such they don’t just fund water projects for the countries in need, they also take care of the ones that they have already built to ensure that the water not only flows but that it flows for years to come. Working with local experts and community members of the village, Charity: Water try to find the best sustainable method to solve the water problem in each place they work whether it’s a pipe system or a system that collects rain water.
Scott Harrison Before Scott Harrison started his charity he was a nightclub promoter whos whole life revolved around booze, drugs and partying within 10 years time he found himself desperately unhappy with himself and his moral compass. Scott abandoned everything he had to try and find his true calling which he found aboard a hospital ship in South Africa. With no money and no experience in the industry he founded Charity: Water. In his best-seller book “Thirst: A Story of Redemption, Compassion, and a Mission to Bring Clean Water to the World” Scott recalls the twists and turns that lead him to find his true calling in helping people gain access to clean water, turning Charity: Water into the most trusted not-forprofit organisation with a 100% public donation model even going as far as to put all the money earned from his book into his charity.
If we continue on the path humanity is currently walking on the demand is expected to outstrip our supply of fresh drinking water we have access to by 40% in 2030. 11 years is all we have left to turn this around for a brighter future for not only humanity of today but the generations of tomorrow.

North Queensland Wildlife Care Inc What do they do and how can you help?
North Queensland Wildlife Care Inc is a non-profit volunteer organisation that helps sick and injured native wildlife in North Queensland. They rescue and care for sick, injured and orphaned wildlife until they are able to be released back into the wild. Their Mission They care for over 1000 animals every year, some of these animals include birds, bettongs, echidnas, frogs, gliders, kangaroos, koalas, microbats, possums, snakes and wallabies. The organisation has more than 250 volunteers that care for the animals in their own home and at their own expense. They have carers from Ingham to Townsville, in the Burdekin, Charters Towers and Mount Isa.
Centre with the help of some grants and hard work and commitmemt from Volunteers. Main reasons wildlife come into care Many things can happen to injure or even kill our native wildlife, sadly many are caused by humans. From expanding into their habitats to being hit by vehicles and even irresponsible pet owners. Road Accidents – Many animals are hit by vehicles everyday all over Australia, most commonly kangaroos, but there are other animals that are hit by vehicles including possums, wallabies, birds, turtles and snakes. Most of the time they are hit at night, so be wary of them and slow down at night. Dogs and cats – Dogs and cats love chasing other animals, sometimes they chase wildlife and can cause them serious injury, stress and even death. In semi-rural areas its wallabies that are the most common victims from dogs, and in urban area its cats chasing birds. If you’re an animal owner you need to keep them in your yard and fix any fences or fill in any holes.
Their History
Collisions with walls or windows – Wildlife that fly sometimes run into buildings and can be stunned or have a severe head fracture.
North Queensland Wildlife Care was established in Townsville in 1989 by a group of carers and incorporated in 1990. Their original objective was to provide a support platform to the wildlife carers in the area. In 2008 they established a Wildlife
Barbed wire – Flying foxes are most commonly known to get entangled in barbed wire, birds and wallabies can also get tangled in barbed wire and if they aren’t rescued they suffer and die.
Author: NB 07/19 | Acknowledgments: Image1 – nqwildlife.org.au, Image2/4 – qwrc.org.au, Image3 – Hinchinbrook.qld.gov.au
Electrocution on powerlines – mainly flying foxes but large birds can also be electrocuted by powerlines. Habitat destrcution – When we decide to clear trees for expansion, we destroy a lot of animals homes and make them wander on to roads or into urban areas or even into other animals territories which can lead to animals being attacked, hit by cars, or even starving. Poison – Poisons you use at home to kill pests like rats, cockroaches and flies can also kill wildlife, try to use safe alternatives
If you encounter an injured animal it will be stressing and stress can kill the animal if not dealt with quickly. You should keep it warm, keep it in the dark and keep it quiet and then you should call Nq Wildlife straight away (0414 717 374). A lot the volunteers have day jobs and you may need to call a few times before you will get through, that includes late at night. If your not sure if it needs help or not, contact Nq Wildlife for advice.
Seasonal conditions – Queensland weather such as cyclones, floods and drought can also harm animals. They could lose their homes, food source and have to move to new environment that they could struggle to live in. Public Intolerance – Some people don’t like having wildlife around so they kick them out of their homes, like possums, snakes, and bats. You need a permit to relocate animals. Why native animals need special care Native animals are not pets and should not be treated like pets, they need to be cared for in a way that will let them go back into the wild with ease. Native animals need to be taught to find their own food, to stay away from humans and other predators like dogs and cats. Carers have to be careful not to humanize the animal so it is able to survive in the wild on its release. Native animals also have specific food they eat and giving them the wrong food can make them very sick or even kill them. They need to be fed in certain ways and carers are trained to feed each species and use the right equipment. Using the wrong equipment or technique can be harmful for the animal and could cause overfeeding or even food going down the animals airways and killing it. You need to be taught special skills to care for a native animal, so always call Nq Wildlife when you find an injured or in need animal or you can take one of their courses and become a carer.
How can you help? If you want to find a way to help out our native wildlife, you can become a member and get trained to care for animals in your own home, training sessions take place four times a year at their wildlife centre for $20 and takes half a day, for more information about their training sessions go to their website www.nqwildlife.org.au. If you don’t have the time or able to take on that kind of commitment you can donate money or become a sponser. Other ways to help
Don’t let your pets chase wildlife
Keep dogs and cats inside from dusk to dawn
Slow down at night
If you hit an animal, stop and check if it’s injured and whether is has a baby in its pouch
Use wildlife friendly fencing

If you want to feed wildlife, seek advice regarding suitable food
Call Nq Wildlife straight away if you find an animal in trouble, don’t wait until the next day (Ph: 0414 717 374)

Orange Sky Connecting homeless people to showers and laundry.
For a quick make people know about Orange Sky, it’s a name of the project funded by Nic and Lucas in September 2014. Just, when they finished university, they got an idea of how they can make a laundry machine and shower operate in the van, after they found out that there were 116,000 homeless people around Australia. To make that project work it took them three days, because they failed for the first day also the second day finally for the third day all operation passed very well. The purpose of Nic and Lucas did this, was to help those homeless people who live in the streets and parks who may need help like cleaning their clothes and shower as well connecting them again to the community. The project was welcomed by homeless people, because most of the stories from those people said that some of them spent days without taking shower or wear dirty clothes. Before it was a hard situation especially for woman to go searching for a shower and cleaning clothes but now thanks Orange Sky they are able to access this. Throughout the homeless people’s stories, it shows that homelessness is real, people spend nights asleep on the street and in the parks after facing some problems like

financial issues or breakdown of relationships or debt to pay for the medical issues. Orange sky is not a government project, it functions by peoples donations, if you would like to join in, you are welcome to fill a form on their website so you can provide a clean laundry and hot shower for our friends. Orange sky’s volunteers are not social workers or experts for homelessness work, which means there is no need for experience to work with orange sky, according to the project, anyone who wants to be volunteer there is very much welcomed.
The Unspoken Disease A little knowledge goes a long way
Here are the Facts.
In Australia, prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in men.
1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer by the age of 85.
63% of cases diagnosed in men over the age of 65.
More men die of prostate cancer than women die of breast cancer.
But What is Prostate Cancer? Prostate cancer develops when abnormal cells in the prostate gland grow more quickly than in a normal prostate, this then forms into what is known as a malignant tumour. According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA), it is a generally slow growing disease and majority of men with low-grade cancer live for many years without spreading or becoming life threatening. However, highgrade disease spreads quickly and can become lethal.
That’s Where the PCFA Come in. The PCFA are a community organisation dedicated to reducing the impacts of prostate cancer on Australian men, their families and partners. They do this by

promoting and funding research into prostate cancer through awareness, advocacy campaigns and education programs for communities, professionals and Government. The PCFA also supports men and their families affected through support groups and specialist nurses for those seeking answers. The PCFA pride themselves on their 5 core values; Integrity, Optimism, Compassion, Respect and Commitment. The PCFA have the responsibility of investing the publics’ generous donations not only into research itself but into many projects that help support men who have or are currently going through prostate cancer.
Get Involved Each year, various community groups support the PCFA. Through their website, you can find or organise your own fundraising event. You can also donate directly through their website or sign up to be a volunteer. For more information visit: https://www.prostate.org.au/
