TRANSITION 2 SUCCESS Youth Justice System We deliver 3 primary service types:
Job-related training that focuses on preparing a young person to enter the workforce, including career counselling, job training and job placements for direct work experience.
Social skills training that provides guidelines and sets behaviour goals, while providing ongoing support to help them learn new ways of interacting with others, and how to manage their emotions in situations where they feel vulnerable, exposed or challenged.
Behaviour management, using tools to guide young people’s behaviour, challenge them to improve, and encourage them to hold one another accountable.
T2S is an alternative education and occupational training program for young people in the youth justice system. The program is delivered by highly trained youth workers in a local community setting and offers young people a chance to work toward a future that isn’t defined by their past behaviours. All T2S courses are taught by experienced teachers who are passionate about sharing their industry knowledge. The qualifications achieved through T2S are recognised across Australia and can be a pathway for young people to develop their education, or to reach their future employment goals. Workers and young people develop supportive and therapeutic relationships that extend beyond the program, ensuring they have support to meet life’s challenges even after the program has ended.
T2S is the result of partnerships between:
These services aim to develop skills to help a young person self-regulate their behaviour and/or enhance their ability to take part in normative pro-social activity.
Who T2S is for T2S is for young people who have had problems engaging appropriately in mainstream education, training or employment pathways programs because of a range of complex problems that may include:
behaviour issues in mainstream education settings that result in suspensions, exclusion or conflict with other students or teachers
learning difficulties (whether or not diagnosed) and lower than average literacy and numeracy levels
our youth justice service centres
secondary schools
registered training organisations
lower level IQ or developmental age
not-for-profit organisations
current or past trauma, abuse and neglect
businesses.
mental health troubles and/or drug and alcohol use
ongoing complex family issues and potential involvement with Child Safety Services (current or past)
dependence on a negative peer group as a support network and involvement with the youth justice system
transience and lack of stable accommodation and communication methods.

Most T2S young people have achieved a grade 9 education level.
Program locations Following the successful pilot and evaluation of the T2S program in Forest Lake in 2015, the program is now rolling out across Queensland. The program is currently offered in:
Aurukun
Bundaberg
Caboolture
Gold Coast
Hervey Bay
Ipswich
Logan
Rockhampton
Sunshine Coast
Townsville
Forest Lake (Brisbane).
Referring a young person to T2S If you know a young person who may be eligible and interested in taking part in a T2S program: 1.
Email T2SYJ@communities.qld.gov.au so we can provide supporting materials
2.
Complete the referral form we send you. This gives us the information we need to help us give the best support to the young person.
3.
We will contact you and the applicant to both attend an interview. We will discuss the program and determine what kind of support is needed like transport, literacy and numeracy and any concerns you or the participant has.
4.
We will meet with parents or carers to discuss the T2S program.
We work collaboratively with referrers, family and other key agencies to support the young person during the program and after they graduate. At the end of every T2S program we celebrate the young person’s commitment at a graduation event. We invite all their supporters to attend.
T2S Staff members The courses at T2S are free so young people don’t have to wary about costs. The staff at T2S also provide transport, clothing and lunch for the young people so they are ready for the day ahead of them, and so they feel more energized to get through the work they have to do. The T2S staff are a very welcoming group of people that are helpful to the young people they work with and are really patient with the ones that are slower at learning or have other mental or personal issues. The staff at T2S might sometimes get the young people to do some activities like canoeing at Ross River, swimming at Crystal Creek and drumbeat where the young people make music with drums and learn social skills with other colleagues. They may also take them to Magnetic Island to go camping, canoeing and swimming. After the program has ended the participants get to celebrate their success with a graduation ceremony where the young people have their photos taken, eat good food, and given awards for their hard work and commitment to the program. The young people and staff members at T2S form friendships within and outside of the program even after it’s over, and the staff may also checkup on the young people from time to time to see how they are doing after the program has ended.
Youth Justice Youth Justice contributes to community safety in Queensland by supervising children and young people (10 to 17-years-old) who come into contact with the youth justice system. This includes providing specific youth offender-based programs and services that hold children and young people accountable for their offending behaviour, encouraging their reintegration into the community and contributing to the safety of Queensland communities. There are 26 Youth Justice Service Centres across the state supervising children and young people on communitybased orders. Service centres deliver offender-based programs and services to address the underlying causes of offending including health concerns, and connect young people with education, training and employment opportunities. Service centres also deliver restorative justice conferencing. These initiatives support young people in moving away from the criminal justice system. There are 2 youth detention centres in Queensland, located in Townsville and in Brisbane. Youth detention centres accommodate young offenders and offer health, education and cultural services – including individual case management, specialised counselling, education and training, and life skills to assist their transition back into the community.

Light Painting A Lesson in Photography
Gareth Brooks. Swirly Orb Light Painting is an interesting technique where long exposures on a DSLR camera can produce some stunning results. Photographers such as Eric Staller, Gareth Brooks and Richard Steinberger are just few of the photographers out there trying techniques such as this and getting some impressive photos.
Camera settings: For the best result you will need to set the camera to Bulb, this will allow you to hold the shutter open for as long as you want. For this to work properly you will need to have the camera set up on a tripod and use a remote so you don’t shake the camera while holding the shutter down. If you don’t have a remote, you can use the 30 second exposure time and that will still give some fun results.
Eric Staller light painting 69
Equipment you will need: To get similar results to these, you will need a DSLR camera, a tripod, some battery powered LED lights on a length of string (I find the poi balls that are used at rave parties work exceptionally well), a remote for the DSLR with a lock to hold for longer exposures although if you don’t have access to a remote you can still get some good results with 30 second exposures and the remotes are available online for about $40. After that it only goes as far as your imagination.
Eric Staller Light Painting 58 As you can see from the photos shown in this article, you can get some interesting results and it only stretches as far as your imagination.
