Steiny’s Spiel The President’s Report
As you will all be aware by now, our much loved and respected president, Steiny, was involved in an horrific accident after the club's north ride on Sunday 12 August 2018. The ride had officially ended at the BP near Caboolture, where those still on the ride had a drink and said our goodbyes. Shortly after entering the highway traffic had stopped and Steiny was stuck on the Can Am, while those on bikes filtered through and continued on. Around the Pine Rivers bridge area, a driver apparently suffered a 'medical incident' and crossed from the north bound to south bound lanes where the driver hit an oncoming car, that was pushed into Steiny's Can Am. Steiny suffered many broken ribs, a punctured lung, a broken collar bone, broken leg, broken hand and cuts and abrasions. He was placed in a medically induced coma for two days, after which he has been heavily sedated. Steiny's son, Glenn, has been sending
daily updates on his condition to family and friends. These updates have been sent to Kim, who has been forwarding them by email to Steel Horse members. Given Steiny's serious condition and his need to rest (to aid recovery) Glenn has asked that visits be kept strictly to family members until further notice. Glenn also requested that no one call the ICU as they will only give information to him and calls take doctors' and nurses' attention away from Steiny and other seriously unwell people. While it may be frustrating not to see Steiny at this time, we have to respect his family's wishes and keep Steiny's best interests at heart by allowing him to recover in peace. There will be plenty of time to visit Steiny when he is out of ICU and in to a ward and will need visits to lift his spirits and relieve the boredom of his hospital stay. Please remember to keep Steiny in your thoughts and prayers and send positive energy to him for a full and speedy recovery. Regards Jak

Today we had a special day weather wise. Although brisk for most of the ride, we all had our winter gear on for most of it and stayed warm. We headed out from castledine at 9 am as arranged and we were joined by a visitor who got our details via our website. His name was Alan and he rode a Victory. (See supporting photos in our newsletter.) He seemed like a talkative chap and was a good rider from what I could tell leading Boots brought Levi along and this proved to be a really fun inclusion to our usual older selves. Sneakers, as he is officially named with namepatch and all, was a delight to have along.
He is a really nice little fella and has taken to riding like a fish to water. Onward out into the backroads of clear mountain and daybora to our first pit stop at the pit stop cafe on top of Mt mee. There wer too many people here and we decided to move on the Mt Mee lookout for our coffee fix and bum break. On arrival we were greeted by Hippy and Roach!! They were late starters and decided to meet us at the bum break. Was a lovely surprise. From here we went out to Woodford and onto landsborough via Chambers Flat Road. Landsborough Pub served up a hearty lunch for all and Sneakers was entertained by the game machine for kids for a half hour or so. After lunch some of our crew decided to go home via the highway and some of us escorted Steiny to a Can Am place in Woodford to get some strange electrical issue looked at. We called the ride here and went our separate ways. Was a great day pout again made even better by the company. Thanks. End report. Mac.

Make a Beeline for this one
It is the size of a small can of tuna, will cost about $US129 ($A175, £98, €110), connects by Bluetooth to your phone and doesn’t chew up your data. Make a Beeline for your destination Beeline GPS satnav. Instead of giving you route maps and complex information, it simply shows you with a bright arrow where to go with either route mode or compass mode. In route mode, the arrow indicates turns with a number to indicate how far the turn is. Compass mode simply points the direction of your destination and how far it is, so you can decide which route to take. It would be a great mode for exploring. Beeline was started by two young British cyclists, Mark Jenner and Tom Putnam, as a navigation tool for cyclists and has sold more than 3000. 6
Now the makers, who also ride motorcycles, have launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund their more robust, waterproof and shockproof motorcycle version. It’s already triple subscribed, so production should start as planned early next year. Why not just use your phone? Quad Lock mobile phone mount beeline. I use a Quad Lock to mount my iPhone to the bike when I need navigation. It twists and snaps into place. So why not just use your phone? With the Beeline you calculate your route via a special app on your phone (iOS or Android) including downloading GPX files, then you choose route or compass mode.Beeline GPS satnav But the Beeline takes over and stops using your phone data unless you stray way off course. The app uses a global map that
requires no further map purchases to work anywhere in the world, except China due to local regulations.Beeline GPS satnav. The app also stores information about your ride, including incriminating evidence of your speed, so be careful about sharing the information. They claim it has battery life of 30 hours and can be recharged with a USB cable.Beeline GPS satnav. You can also select modes to show battery life, clock, speed and other data. The Beeline clips on in a similarly secure system to the Quad Lock and it’s small enough (20.8×51.3mm) to fit in your pocket and weighs just 60 grams. It has a night light and they claim the display is highly visible even in bright sunlight – although it is made by Brits who wouldn’t know what bright sunshine was! There is also a backlight for night riding.

Bowra The stands went up at around 8:15am after a (nice?) brekky at Maccas, to a rather foggy and cool morning in downtown Beaudesert. Mac, Drastic and me had spent the night knocking off at least an hour for the trip. We headed south making Rathdowney in good time, then continued up and over the mountain range with the fog almost gone, but wet roads to contend with. We re-grouped at he top of the range for the run down to Kyogle where we stopped for our first arse-off-seats for hot drinks and snacks.

After a half or so we continued through to Grafton for our second stop. It was decided that lunch would not be the usual pub stop as it would take a big chunk out of the day and that we'd arrive at a more sensible time in Bowraville. A great plan as we arrived at 3:30pm which gave everyone the chance to get their gear stowed away, shower and relax with the bar tab kindly provides by Kim, Rosie, Ned and Steiny... cheers! After leaving Grafton it was the back roads through to Coffs Harbour, a service station stop for 10 minutes then straight through to Bowraville. We all settled in quickly, had a few drinky-poos in the snug bar while waiting for the band to set up. Dinner was served at 6:00pm, the usual fare, that most seemed happy with. The boys from Voodoo Punch joined us for dinner and I want to take this opportunity to thank them for making the pilgrimage again to rock the Bowra Hotel. Great job boys... and keep the new singer on for a while longer!!

Hello boys and girls. The ride followed the route as per ride calendar, which was a relaxed meander via Walloon, Grandchester, Blenheim and Forest Hill our first break. After the break we headed off to the Farmers Arms near Hampton for lunch this was via Gatton and Murphy’s Creek. After lunch we went down the hill for fuel in Esk and then off to Blacksoil where we said our goodbyes. All up a nice relaxing ride with good friends. Thanks everyone for attending. Cheers Yogi
