BMW Club Queensland
January - June 2021
THE BIMMER MONTHLY January to June 2021 President’s Message
Welcome to the next edition of “The Bimmer” and I’d like to thank Leanne Tymms for taking over the editorial and production of our eNewsletter at the AGM in June.2021 has been an amazing year so far for BMW Club Queensland.
As a direct result of this logo change, we have launched a complete range of new club merchandise and with the help of Hype Creations, a new online web store to market and administer those new items. Please check it out at https://www.bmwcq.com.au/store
Social, motorsport, meetings, displays and tech days have all had excellent attendances and we have been able to wave the Club flag and add a significant number of new members as a result of the high profile of our club in the car community. CoVid still causes some issues with the planning and running of events, but so far, we haven’t had too many issues here in Queensland, although I know that Greg Tymms, our Drive Coordinator, has been disappointed that we have not been able to do the boarder ranges run yet this year. Our club, as well as all BMW Clubs worldwide, has gone through a major rebranding exercise with the design and adoption of a new club logo. This was mandated by BMW with the release of their new BMW logo, so the layout and design of 700+ logos worldwide had to comply with the new club logo guidelines.
We have a number of interesting and varied events coming up over the next few months but please mark Saturday 4th December in your diary. That’s the night we are going to celebrate 30 years of BMW Club Queensland with a Gala dinner at Sirromet Winery. I would also like to congratulate Leanne and Greg Tymms again for their Life Time Membership recognition which was awarded to them at the recent AGM. This award is very special and is only given to members who go above and beyond with their dedication to our club. Stay safe, enjoy your cars and see you on 4th December to celebrate our club. Gary CJ Schweikert #1522 President BMWCQ
A special thanks to Tim Cooke for the days of work that you put into designing and supplying the various artwork for our new logo.

BMWCQ Events - Where did the time go! Even with the COVID19 restrictions and interruptions, we managed to fill quite a number of Social and Driving events in the first half of 2021. Motorsport was able to continue uninterrupted for the majority of time.
Some of the things we got up to! March 07 Exclusive Movie Afternoon - Brock Over the Top at Event Cinemas Chermside. Movie Afternoons seem to be quite popular and once again members turned out to enjoy another private screening of a very entertaning movie.
January 30 Australian Outback Spectacular’s Heartland show. A very well attended event by our club members that included a back stage tour before the show and a terrific 3 course meal served during the program.
March 27 Brisbane City All Club & Convertible Cruise An afternoon cruise around the outreaches of Brisbane from Mt Gravatt Lookout, then cruised out to the Moggill Ferry and ending up at the Grey Gum Picnic area at Mt Cootha. Picnic hampers were the feast for the day and beverages to suit. See the video HERE

February 21 Club Run to Linville Hotel A lovely cruisy drive out to a tiny town called Linville and as many asked, where the hell is that? So a few members visited a town they never knew existed! Quite a warm day, laid back surroundings, very tasty meals and live music to boot. Check out the photos and video HERE
Mar 28 Wrap Art Open Day WRAP ART invited BMWCQ to help them celebrate their Open day. Club members met at the guys shed at Murrarie and were shown the intricaticies of wraping a vehicle. We went along to see where they were and what they do. Their business also does wheel repairs, refurbishment and detailing. Check out the photos HERE

BMWCQ Events April 10 - Brisbane River Cruise to Lunch. This featured the well know icon, The Breakfast Creek Hotel. We all enjoyed a cruise on the Brisbane River from the Cultural Centre Pontoon with a morning tea of tea/coffee and scones then continued to cruise down to the jetty at Newstead House. A short stroll across the bridge to the Hotel. and our pre-ordered meals were served. The size of the meals were spectacular and everyone thouroughly enjoyed their selections. Fortunately the short stroll back to the boat enabled us to walk off a bit of the meal. A return journey back up the river brought us full circle and the end of a very enjoyable day on our city river. Here is the video of the day HERE
Apr 26 E30 Social Coffee and Catch Up Glorious weather greeted enthusiasts this morning. Thanks to all who attended our little E30 register meet. Good to see Rod, Adam, Scott &others who I will get to know more over time. I think we had 8 cars & 10 people, so a nice start. See you all again soon. Here are some photos of the morning HERE. May 02 Kingston Park Raceway A great turn out even though the weather did not cooperate. A Bar-B-Que breakfast was provided by the club which stood everyone in good stead and ready for the competition. Check out the action HERE Photos HERE
January - June 2021 May 16 David Hack Classic BMW Club Queensland Morning Run to the David Hack Day,Toowoomba City Airport May 16,2021 As we gathered in the cold early Sunday morning at the Puma Service Station, Citiswitch waiting for the Sun to rise above the horizon, we were pleased to see that the day promised and looked to be sensational. Not a cloud in the sky. We had 17 cars primed to look their best and ready to tackle the roads to Toowoomba. We were partnering with Club Mini who had 10 cars there and were joining our Convoy. With 17 BMW’s and 10 Mini’s we departed at 6.30am and travelled the Warrego Highway and ventured on the new Toowoomba Bypass which took us on a more direct route to the Airport, thereby eliminating the possibility of the convoy being broken up by traffic lights. Arrived at the Airport at 7.45am and proceeded to join the queue to get in. Once in the gate, we found our spot and parked up either side of our BMW Marquee. Overall, the event had more than 700 cars parked so they had a very successful day. In addition to the Classic Cars there were Classic Warbird Planes available to view and go in Joy flights, if you wanted to. Thanks need to go to Katrina from Club Mini who generously baked “BMW” biscuits for us to consume during our stay. Very nice…. She also baked “Mini” biscuits for their Club members to enjoy. Also, thanks must go to Vic and Ingrid who generously towed the Club Trailer ALL the way to Toowoomba and also to Brian and Melanie Alderton who assisted Vic and Ingrid in putting the Marquee up. Thanks everyone The David Hack Day is a charity day organised by the combined Rotary Clubs of Toowoomba and it’s good to know that we are contributing to that cause. Thanks to ALL members who attended. I know many of you had a LONG day, but it is worth it. See you NEXT year. Greg Tymms Drive Co-ordinator
May 08 BMW Club Gold Coast Tech Day BMWCQ joined club members from the Gold Coast and visited Bruce Lynton BM Service workshop. This was a very interesting day and we got to see where their race cars are built. Video HERE and photos HERE

BMWCQ Events May 23 Display Macleans Bridge and BMWCQ Show of Excellence This was the day that the Club got to exhibit all our wonderful machines in all their glory and put on our Annual Show of Exceellence. This is the time where the cars are judged in various categories and showcase the excellence of the Marque. Needless to say, many club members spent many long hours preparing their vehicles for the display. There are varying degrees of the effort put into the cars going from a well washed and polished car to the intracasies of the minute particles between body panels. All the judging is done by club members and a comprehensive scoring system is in place. The cars are judged in the various categories such as Best Interior, Exterior, Wheels and Boot, Engine Bay,GlazingOther and Club Regalia. The overall highest score leads to a car being named Car of the Show. This has been fiercely fought over the years and once a vehicle is named 3 times, it then goes into a Master Class. The day is always very well attended by the public and other car clubs displaying their cars too. It is a wonderful event where you can see the many varied models of old and new cars. It is the ideal arena to showcase the BMWCQ, our vehicles and our members showing how to have a great time. There is always interest in the Club and this has resulted in gaining new members due to the exposure on the day. Even though it is a long day, it a very satisfying day for everyone who attends. June 13 RACQ Motorfest The next big event was the annual display at RACQ Motorfest. After some false starts to put this display over the past year due to the uncertainty of COVID19 and last minute postponements, the day finally came. This time it was not to be held at the usual Eagle Farm Racecourse location but at The Brisbane Exhibition Grounds Sideshow Alley area. Due to the size of the area available, the club was restricted to only 25 cars for display. Once again, it was a well attended day and the profile of the BMWCQ was there for all to see. With our brand new BMWCQ banners and Marques, it wasn’t hard to spot the BMW display. Here is our President being interviewed by RACQ and promoting our club. HERE
Here are some of the beautiful cars on show on the day. For a full view click PHOTOS

Membership Report
January - June 2021
Membership of the Club continues to be healthy with 60 new members in the first half of 2021. There have been a small number who elected not to renew their membership, mainly due to no longer owning a BMW. There is increasing interest in membership in order to access the Special Interest Vehicle Registration scheme (aka Club Rego). Recently, BMW AG revised their corporate logo which created a requirement for all the affiliated club's around the world to use the new logo. They also specified how it was to be laid out as part of each club's own logo. It was found that our logo, which had been used for a number of years, was too tall to fit the guidelines which favoured a wide logo. A new logo was designed showing the shape of Australia with Queensland highlighted by "M" stripes with a Sun shining on the State. This was subsequently approved by BMW AG and has now been officially adopted as our Club's logo. The Membership Cards also had to be updated with the new club logo and it was decided that, as the cards are quite durable and don't need to be replaced every year, the "Expiry date" would not be displayed on the new cards. This will significantly lower the cost of distributing Membership cards thus freeing up money for use on events, etc. The mailout of the new cards is imminent and they will have new BMW Club Qld car stickers sent with them. The removal of the "Expiry Date" from the cards was possible due to the fact that members could verify their membership status via other means. Wild Apricot is the software program behind the club's website and has a lot of capability. Each member can install, on their mobile devices, an App called "Wild Apricot Members" and access it using the same login details as used on the club website. Once logged in, selection of "My Card" displays a Membership Card that shows their current membership expiry date - this may be required at some Motorsport events or when accessing discounts at businesses that support our club. Another way that members can see their expiry date is to log into the club website, click on their name (just above the banner, to the right) and that will show a page including a Membership Card the same as shown in the App. If members wish to print this card, they can select "Printable PDF" which is just underneath it. Mototsport Report Half Year Motorsport Report Despite the pressures of the strange times we are living under, attendance at all Motorsport events has been well up and even a record number at our April Lakeside day. The year started with a visit to Mt Cotton Driver Training Centre for an afternoon Skid Pan Session to practice car handling skills, in a fun way. This event was closely followed by Round 2 of our RX Automotive Sprint Series at Qld Raceway. Not the normal time of year we that head to QR, made necessary with the temporary closure of Lakeside, for maintenance. The day was still well attended with 46 in total and an interesting mix of cars including 11 ///M cars, mainly M2's, MX5's, Mini’s, Toyota 86's, a Mustang, Porsche and others. Honours for the day went to Roman Miller, followed by Ian O’Hara and closely, Rick Catania. Our next outing, in April, was a return to our home track of Lakeside for a day blessed with perfect weather and a record entry number of 50. Club attendance was excellent and included 8 M Cars and many others, as well as large number from our Tack Day partners, the MX5 club and several others, with an eclectic range of cars.Outright Winner for the day was James Stephenson in an E36 M3, with a sub-sixty, 59.3775. Followed by Terry Young in his M2 and a very quick, John Toomer in an MX5. For something different, we returned to Lakeside in June, this time on a Saturday afternoon for what we called a Consistency Sprint. Similar to a Regularity except you don’t have a practice session or have to nominate a goal time to drive to, like a normal Regularity. Using your average lap time for the afternoon, we then added your difference between that and each lap time, the person driving closest to their average time and lowest total score being the winner. Well done, David Yule with a total score for the afternoon of just 2.45 seconds. A mention to Paul Rout, on his first event with the club with a score of just 0.419 seconds for the four timed laps of his first session. A terrific effort. July saw us return to Morgan Park, in Warwick for our annual visit with the Porsche Club. With the cancellation of the Sunday event, round 4 of our Sprint Series was moved to the Saturday, also the 4th round of the InterClub Challenge. We had an excellent attendance from our club with 14 members entered. The day went well for most, unfortunately not so for my self, with a cracked radiator and subsequent damaged engine. A much better result for Alex Haig as fastest from our club, followed by Roman Miller. Morgan Park is an exciting track and you should not miss a chance to experience it. I would like to thank everyone for their participation and support of all our Motorsport events, through these recent strange times, and hope we continue to see new people coming out to the track to drive their cars more in the way they were intended. Blast from the Past Here is the first BMW Clubs Australia Magazine published 1989-1990. Many things may have changed but somethings stay the same! There was a Nationals meet in Brisbane in 1989 of all the Clubs coming from Interstate. As there were seperate Clubs in each State, it was agreed that there should be a National Committee with a National Chairman and the clubs being represented by Office Bearers from each State. There was also an International Delegate elected to liaise with BMW GA and BMW AG and represent Australia at the International Meeting. These were the early days and the Clubs came together under the banner of BMWCA initially as a whole. Enjoy going down memory lane and see what was trendy for the times. Surely there will be some blasts from the past in the photos for sure and brings back many good memories. I’m sure a few of us would dearly want to own now some of the cars that show in the magazine. Foresight is everything some times. For newer members of BMWCQ here is a sample of the long term friendships and experiences that exist within the Clubs. We hope that you enjoy being part of a womderful lifestyle. Read more in the magazine HERE
Celebrating our 30 th Year as an Incorporated Club Have a look at the BMWCQ club logo that has evolved over the time. Design changes have been made during the years in keeping with the BMWAG guidelines. How many of these do you recognize and what Era do you think these are from?
A Big thank you to all of the committee and the club members who get together to arrange all the great events that we, as club members get to enjoy. It has been said “The Cars are what bring us all together but it is the Members who make it such a great Club!!!

Vale - Ray Allsop It was with heavy heart that the Club learned of the passing of long term club member Ray Allsop #703. He lost his battle with cancer and was farewelled by family and friends in Melbourne on Friday 30 th July, 2021. As COVID19 placed restritions on the number who could attend, the service was live streamed so people could join in. The Club sent flowers as a show of respect to a lost club member. Ray was an active member of the club especially with anything Motorsport and enjoyed the many track days and events put on by the Club. There are many of us who recall the many treks we made down to the Bathurst 12 hour Race over the years and the time spent in the communal houses enjoying each others company. Ray along with his co-hort Rob Battle would take control of the kitchen and cook up a storm to feed all those hungry mouths coming back from a full day at the track. There are many great memories to recall for sure. Rest in peace Ray, you will be missed. Have a look at the day where Ray’s race car was taken round the track. HERE is a tribute video that some of Ray’s close motorsport friends made for him because he could not be at Lakeside to see his car run.

The interior has had a re-trimmed M Sport wheel fitted, as well as a brand new leather gearshift from BMW. I’ve also fitted a Eonon headunit as the original one didn’t work (I still have all the original parts if wanted). Overall the car runs and drives great.
