CAMS & ICC Hill Climb Challenge - Mt Cotton 5 Oct 2019 .....by Denis Weisz th

October was a busy month for Club Motorsport with 2 events involving club members. The first major event was the Queensland round of CAMS Hill Climb Challenge, also a round of the InterClub Challenge this year. The club furnished 2 teams with 7 entries total, however with the last minute withdrawal of one team member, that meant we had the minimum of 3 per team. With 12 teams in total entered from many clubs, it made for a very mixed and varied entry list. New competition rules for this event meant there were no classes with basically all entrants were competing against themselves, with the difference from their two fastest runs taken to give a score, and added to create a team score, with lowest scoring team winning. Our team of Simon and Pierz Harrex and Alan Moore achieved some very close times, with Pierz and Simon both achieving just 0.04 seconds difference in 2 runs and Alan a 0.16, giving a team total of just 0.24 seconds. Especially impressive from Simon who had not driven at Mt Cotton for 28 years. With such a low score, the outcome was inevitable, with Team RX Racers coming first and winning a hefty $2500 for the club charity fund. Our second team, The Beaming Beemers of Chris Price, Peter Mastalir, and Charlie Tutt followed up in 7th place, a fantastic effort all round. More PHOTOS

Spring Brekky Run - QR 6 Oct 2019 .....by John Tait th

The Spring Brekky Run went off without a hitch with 28 cars. We had a pretty clear run along most of the interesting roads. Everyone seemed to thoroughly enjoy the drive and the excellent Farmer’s Big breakfast at Birches Restaurant on Mt Mee. Birches did a fabulous job of getting the meals out to all 49 of us within 30 minutes. We were joined by 7 non-members on the day, hopefully some of these may now be members. A free raffle for the non-members with a prize of 12 months BMWCQ membership was won by Nick Domrow. Congratulations Nick.

RX Automotive Afternoon Regularity Session - QR 13th Oct .....by Denis Weisz Our next event was a long awaited return to our weekend Afternoon Regularity Sessions, and last event for our Sprint Series for 2018-19. This time at QR. With a good field of 15 entrants, including 7 M cars and a GT3 Porsche, a couple of MX-5's and even a Holden HSV, we were set for some interesting competition. After a practice round and goal times nominated, 3 more runs were enjoyed. When the results were tallied, the trophy was taken by Clive Huebler from the MX-5 Club on just 84 points, followed by our regularity master Larry Crouch. Congratulations also to Michael Francis wife, Dale in 3rd place, showing the boy’s how its done, just 1 point behind Larry. Not bad for her first time on track, proving these events are ideal for the novice as well as the more experienced.

2019 Racer Industries Queensland Touring Car Championship ....by Richard Gresham Queensland Raceway hosted the 2019 QTCC Grand final on November 2-3. In Class A1, Chris Sharples (Monaro) had one hand on the championship trophy coming into this weekend, and by the end of the opening day, he had secured his first QTCC title. Piers Harrex (BMW E30) was the only threat to Sharples, but a costly seventh place finish, in the opening race, put pay to any hope the BMW driver had of causing the upset.

Quick Stats: 39 Cars ran in Saturday qualifying & 14 were BMWs: In order of qualifying results: Mitch Wooller E36, Pierz Harrex E30, Matt Swarbrooke E46, Lance Jurgeleit E36, Leon Kemp E36, Gary Lange E46 John Swarbrooke E46, John Phoenix E36, Maddii Crowe E46, Scott Kelly E36, Andrew Knight E46, Peter Jolly E30, Malcolm Douglas E30, Richard Gresham*2002 VIDEO PHOTOS (Fiona Carmichael – Fi Fotos) & RESULTS

Richard Gresham’s story: Car dropped an oil line on the first hot lap of qualifying - I spun on the oil - so no qualifying times set. You have to set two times as this gives grid positions for Races 1 & 3, so I had rear of grid starts for those two races. Battled from 39th to around 25th when the throttle cable broke on lap 4 – so that meant another RoG start for race 2.. Battled my way from 36th to 12th, but of course did not start there for race three as I was RoG again and finished 17th. Race 4 saw me pick up a few more spots to finish 11th in the final race and third of the BMWs home behind Pierz & Mitch. In Car Video

BMWCQ Christmas Party .....by Gary Schweikert

November 2019

2020 RX Automotive Sprint Series Rnd 1

The BMW Club QLD Annual Christmas Celebration was held on Sunday 24th November and this year we returned to Casa Domrow, with Peter and Leanne our hosts at their wonderful property at Domrow Road, Camp Mountain. Thank you! There was no excuse to get lost, was there Rebecca!

https://youtu.be/IDVLmy3few0

A record field turned out for the first round of next year’s series with our track day partners, the MX-5 Club at Lakeside on Friday 22nd November.

The weather was a cracker and perfect temperature for a cool drink and a swim. There were about 60 guests there and it was wonderful to see a number of new faces joining in the one of the clubs special social activities. Check out the PHOTOS

Congratulations to Ben Malpass for the fastest (sub 60 second) lap of the day closely followed by Rick Catania. The highlight of the morning was the presentation of trophies to the individual class winners and announcement of the club’s outright champion for 2018/19. Again, congratulations Ben Malpass for taking out the 2019 RX Automotive Sprint Series. Ben started the year driving his F80 M3 in ///M class, then with an E36 M3, he moved to T1 class for race cars.

Of course, what would a Christmas Celebration be without a visit from Santa to distribute gifts to the children. In past years Santa has arrived at our Christmas parties by Jet Ski, convertible, and even Mini Bike, how did he arrive this year?

I would like to thank all 81 club members who participated in track events this year as well as our track day partners, MX-5 Club and all the non-members who made this our biggest attended year ever. We look forward to seeing even more at our track days next year and, on behalf of all our attendees, wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Safe New Year. Denis Weisz, BMWCQ Motorsport Director Thank you again to Russell Thomas for the great VIDEOS and PHOTOS .

BMW Car Club of America https://youtu.be/luDfmMQ0haE

Some of the Aussies (and the Kiwi) were asked to be judges for their Concours on the Wednesday. The main street was closed and the array of BMWs were awesome. The only dampener was the rain, which kept the numbers of cars and people rather low.. PHOTOS BMW CCA celebrated their 50th year with their O’fest in Greenville, South Carolina from 14 -19th Oct. Their club has 70,000 members so you can imagine the scale of a special celebration like this. There were 9 Aussies visiting including Luke Wise, President of Club ACT, Simon Branston ACT, Greg & Leanne Tymms, John & Maryann Fairman and Sue & I, all from BMWCQ. The 9th Aussie was Ian Branston, ex ACT, who now lives in Greenville and is married to Lindsay Sizemore-Branston, the CFO of BMW CCA. We flew into Georgia the weekend prior and had an amazing time at the final round of the 2019 IMSA championship at Road, Atlanta. BMW was a major competitor there and on the last lap of the 10 hour Petit Le Mans, Bill Auberlen in a BMW M6 GT3 caught and overtook the leading Mercedes to win his class! VIDEO

We could not leave South Carolina without a tour of the BMW Group Plant Spartanburg. This is where the entire X range of cars are built for the world. The numbers are staggering... 11,000 employees, $10.6 billion invested, 7 million square feet, they have produced 4.7 million vehicles, and currently produce 1,400 vehicles daily. Unfortunately PHOTOS were only allowed in the museum, not in the factory. But let’s not forget what this trip was about. Great cars with amazing motor racing heritage. That’s why I spent the money for a charity ‘Hot Laps’ ride in the famous #25 3.0CSL PHOTOS

https://youtu.be/VqJ5gOopn9M O’fest started on Monday with a Ladies Day at the BMW Performance Drivers Centre. Leanne & Sue did extremely well, considering they were driving on the wrong side of the car and road. Photos & Video Here is the Complete Schedule of the weeks events. Tuesday, it was the boys turn on the track and we Aussies were joined by Gerry Hodges, President of the New Zealand BMW Club. PHOTOS

And now for something completely different..........

https://youtu.be/UkYG2RAR8ic

The celebrations were based at the Hyatt Regency Greenville for the week where there were countless social, technical and BMW focused events with displays, workshops, food and drink in abundance. Thanks Dinan! We were made extraordinarily welcome.

“Call that a hat?”

One of the companies that is based in South Carolina not far from BMW is Michelin. They have incredible testing facility at Laurens with numerous testing tracks and we were fortunate to be given various cars to try out their tyres. PHOTOS VIDEOS The week closed with a BBQ, beach party and official opening of the BMWCCA Head Office. Great times, many memories and lots of new friends. Thanks to everyone who made this trip possible! Congratulations! “Surfing USA Dance!” VIDEO
