Presidents Message Another busy month, which started on Friday 13th September at Lakeside and then, that night at Brisbane BMW where Andrew Thompson, their special vehicles manager gave us an update with what is happening across the entire ///M range. LIVE. The Awards & Celebration Night went off well, the next night, with lots of Glitz & Glamor, awards, games, prizes and some bubbles to top off the evening. On Saturday 21st, we set up a Club Display at a commmunity pop-up event at Brookwater that was being supported by Westside BMW and were very please to meet a couple of potential new club members. Also looking forward to our October guest speaker, Dominic Corkeron (see below) to show us his rally car and tell us some tales of his BMW ‘doing it sideways’. Special Guest at the next BMWCQ meeting at Westside BMW on Friday 4th October will be Dominic Corkeron - the 2019 QLD Clubman Rally Series Champion. Meet Dominic and see the championship winning BMW E30 Rally car in the flesh. Dominic Corkeron is the latest BMW Club member to win a state motorsport series driving our favourite marque. Dominic has been competing in gravel rallies since 1987 in a career which has seen him compete at the highest level of the Australian Rally Championship, Rally Australia (Perth), Asia Pacific Rally Championship (Canberra), win an outright Queensland Rally Championship plus numerous categories – but all as a co-driver. All that changed in 2019 when after a 6 and a half year build process, Dominic debuted his pristine BMW E30 rally car and himself as a driver for the first time.

Fast Forward to now with 5 rallies under his belt, Dominic has taken the Rally E30 328i to its maiden championship win after podiums (including one 1st) in all events to be the 2019 Queensland Clubman Champion – another BMW motorsport success. To begin, a perfect E30 slick top coupe (318i auto) was found back in 2012 and then completely stripped. Next step was the engine and after some research, it was decided the M52 series would make an ideal rally engine. It had all the right ingredients - an all alloy twin cam design with 4 valves per cylinder so it is light, makes good power and torque and it loves to rev. A 328Ci E46 statutory wreck with 216,000 km and 5 speed was found so the engine and drive train were next to drop in. Long story short, the car had a complete bare shell rebuild including re-wiring. The finished product has been touched by many BMWCQ hands including Pierz and Simon Harrex, Greg Lee, Denis Weisz and Matt Gresham, all of whom have made the car what it is today.

We gathered at Lakeside, under perfect spring skies, with a near record attendance for round 7 of our RX Automotive Sprint Series. Following sign-in and registration, Simon Harrex conducted one of his highly informative track walks, where he imparts some of his vast knowledge on the best way to approach driving Lakeside. With a total of 45 entrants for the day, we had a variety of cars from a brace of 40 year old 2002 race cars to current ///M cars, as well as several MX5's from th MX5 Club. It was a delight to welcome 8 new first time attendees and we hope you enjoyed the experience and will see you again at our next track day. We also welcomed two ladies to the day, Gillian Harvey who had just joined the club with her new M2 and her daughter Jess. I trust they enjoyed the day and it will encourage more ladies to join in.

Unfortunately the Friday 13 hoodoo did strike, Simon aka ‘Crash’ Harrex, had an oil cooler rupture in the beautiful RX Automotive E30 race car, dumping oil over his tyres, resulting in a spin and closer inspection of the wall than wanted and some minor damage to the car. The car is OK and was back on track racing in the Qld Touring Car Championship Sept 27-29th at Lakeside. Congratulations to Richard Gresham in his 2002, with a fastest lap of the day at 0:59.46 closely followed at 1:00.50 by John Phoenix in his Greenfield Mowers E36 SuperTourer replica. Not bad for a couple of old, normally aspirated 4 pots. Please check out our remaining track events for the year, and come and join us at one of the venues.

Yes, it will be an early(ish) getaway but it also means less traffic and you'll be home early to do the mowing...or clean the car...or.... We're meeting at John Scott Park, Samford at 6:30am. Briefing will be at 6:45am and departure at 7:00am. The drive will take a little over 95 minutes along some favourite roads with equal enjoyment for drivers and passengers. Our destination will be Birches Restaurant at Mt Mee for a fabulous breakfast high on the hill. Check out the set brekky menu here.

Brookwater Residential Display Day ....by Russell Thomas As part of our support of local communities and Westside BMW, we gladly accepted the invitation from Hayley Wighton (Sales Manager – Brookwater Residential) to attend one of their “Lifestyle Event Series – Get Your Drive On – The BMW & Brookwater Experience” on Saturday 21st September at the Brookwater Residential Sales Office. Brookwater is a suburb in the City of Ipswich and is one of the suburbs of the Greater Springfield Development, 35 minutes west of Brisbane. On display were some luxury BMW models including the 2020 BMW X3 M Competition, X4, X5, X7, Z4 & M2. Also in attendance was the dealer principle of Westside BMW - Mark Miller to answer any questions. Complimentary beverages and paella were also on offer - Wow! As part of the event the club displayed 9 cars, setup the club marquee, banner and tables displaying club merchandise and membership information on the grassed area adjacent to the sales office. This gave local Brookwater residents the opportunity to meet and chat with club members about the club cars on display and what benefits the club offers its members. Some of the residents definitely showed an interest in joining the club, so hopefully we’ll have the opportunity to welcome them at the next meeting or event! All in all a fun filled afternoon with the club. Special thanks goes out to John Fairman for driving the event, Vic Crennan for organising the marquee, Alex & Ann Irvine for transporting all the merchandise (and packing it up again) and all other members who generously gave their time on the day! Well, another Celebration and Awards night done and dusted. Once again held at the Eagle’s Nest at Kangaroo Point and the glitz and glamour was full on! Thank you to everyone who attended and participated in such an enjoyable night.
Plenty of food, prizes, awards and winners which was great to see. We hope everyone enjoys their major prizes with a weekend away, high tea , BMW merchandise and lots of other goodies. The activities on the night was well participated in which added to the success of the night. Thank you to those supporters with contributions of so many wonderful prizes.
