ON THE COVER mn Original This month, a will premiere one of our most anticipated new series: mn Original, dedicated to showcasing Minnesota’s creative community and demonstrating why our abundant arts community has acquired its national reputation. Made possible by the Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund from the State of Minnesota, this new weekly series will provide a place where Minnesota artists can share their creative process and their unique work.
Music
“Minnesotans have always supported the arts – with their time and attendance,” says Dianne Steinbach, a’s Executive Director of Arts & Cultural Media. “That tradition of support has fostered a very talented arts community statewide. The idea behind mn Original is to introduce viewers to the many original thinkers who live and are producing extraordinary work in Minnesota”.
mn Original will capture the best and the brightest, the established and emerging artists, in both the mainstream and diverse cultures of Minnesota. Performing and visual artists, writers and architects, filmmakers and designers will all be presented in the series. In the first few programs, for example, viewers will meet Alec Soth, whose mesmerizing portraits range from black and white scenes in Minneapolis bars to homemade cabins and communes along the Mississippi river. There is also Ernesto “Neto” Ybarra – a painter with influences from Diego Rivera to Jean Michel Basquiat, along with Emmy Award-winning composer and recording artist, Chan Poling, whose alternative rock band, The Suburbs, shaped the Minneapolis Sound in the 1980s.
Visual Arts
Performing Arts
The mn Original companion website, mnoriginal.org, will present clips from the series as well as unique content for an online audience. The website will serve as a teaching resource for Minnesota’s educators with segments for classroom use and arts education materials, that meet Minnesota Teaching Standards. We hope that mn Original inspires you to think of the arts and artists in new ways and we hope you’ll tune in each week to see the best of Minnesota’s arts and culture.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE NEW WEEKLY ART SERIES PREMIERES APRIL 22
This month, a premieres a new weekly series, mn Original, a unique program that will demonstrate the depth and breadth of Minnesota’s cultural and artistic richness. As president of a , I am, of course, very proud of our station’s work in creating the show; however, I am also very proud of you, our members, and of the people of Minnesota for making it possible. This series is funded by the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment, which Minnesota voters approved in 2008. Then, as now, we were all feeling the pinch of rough economic times, so it is truly remarkable that as a community, Minnesotans decided to make the arts, culture and the environment a priority.
It reminds me of a quote by Winston Churchill. When Britain faced dire economic conditions after World War II, a member of Parliament suggested to Mr. Churchill that the Ministry of Culture be eliminated as a cost-saving measure. Mr. Churchill replied, “I thought THAT’S what we were fighting for.” Minnesotans understand that principle – how important it is not to abandon the arts, culture and the environment.
today, gone tomorrow. Not only will we broadcast the show weekly, but we will archive it on the web, index it for use in schools, and in 50 years people will still be able to access and enjoy it. mn Original is truly a team effort. From a members, to Minnesota tax-payers, to our fellow public television stations throughout the State with whom we have partnered to create the show, it is a great example of the power of television to unite people with a common purpose. I want to take this opportunity to say, “Hats off to you Minnesota,” for funding conservation, arts and cultural efforts throughout the State. And, as ever, I want to say thank you to our members, who keep a strong and who make shows like mn Original possible. This is your show – watch, enjoy, and let us know what you think. Thank you!
The investment in programs like mn Original is a lasting investment – it’s not ethereal – it’s not here James R. Pagliarini

HUNTING THE EDGE OF SPACE
a
Spring 2010 marks two remarkable anniversaries: The 20th anniversary of the launch of the most famous telescope in history, the Hubble Space Telescope, and the 400th anniversary of the publication of Galileo’s Starry Messenger, a book that started a revolution in our understanding of our place in the cosmos. Hunting the Edge of Space, a two-hour special produced by a for NOVA, tracks Hunting the Edge of Space the telescope through four centuries of discovery. “In the last few years, we’ve had an explosion of remarkable discoveries in astronomy – mysteries like Dark Energy and questions about the ultimate fate of the universe. But these are only the latest in the many revolutionary discoveries made with telescopes, going right back to Galileo,” says a’s Director of Science Production, Richard Hudson. Hunting the Edge of Space brings to life crucial moments in the history of man’s understanding of space: from Galileo's discovery of Jupiter’s moons, to Edwin Hubble’s realization that the universe is populated by untold numbers of galaxies. The show also focuses on modern-day, cutting-edge research. ”We hope viewers will be inspired to gaze at the night sky themselves,” says Hudson. “With binoculars or a small telescope, anyone can see the stars and the planets just as Galileo and Herschel did, and wonder what the next great discovery will be.”

Great Performances Hamlet
Shakespeare's tortured Danish prince receives a contemporary spin in this critically acclaimed production from the Royal Shakespeare Company. Starring David Tennant as Hamlet (familiar to fans as Dr. Who in the cult-favorite UK science fiction TV series) and Patrick Stewart (of Star Trek: The Next Generation and the X-Men movies) as Claudius, this television adaptation features an edgy interpretation by innovative director Gregory Doran, utilizing location shooting at St. Joseph's College, London, as the setting for a present-day Elsinore Castle. Tennant won a 2009 Olivier Award for his performance.

BEHIND-THE-SCENES OF THROUGH A DOG’S EYES
The film follows the journey of recipients as they go through the process of receiving and being acclimated to an assistance dog. It features Jennifer Arnold, founder of one of the nation’s largest assistance dog organizations, Canine Assistants.
They say a dog is man’s best friend – and never is this more true than in the case of service dogs. On April 22, we bring you Through a Dog’s Eyes, a a original production which highlights these remarkable animals. Our magazine went behind-the-scenes with the show’s Executive Producer, Naomi S. Boak, to get a glimpse into the making of this hour-long documentary. “This film will change the way people think about their own dogs,” says Boak, who also produced the critically acclaimed and Primetime Emmy Awardwinning PBS documentary The Forgetting: A Portrait of Alzheimer’s. “Through a Dog’s Eyes shows the importance of the human-canine bond and how, when fostered, that bond can grow into a beautiful, life-changing relationship.”
The show focuses on Arnold’s unique teaching methods and discusses the life-changing impact these dogs have on recipients, “We wanted to go indepth,” says Boak. In addition, the world’s foremost dog expert, Dr. Ádám Miklósi, founder of the Family Dog Research Project, analyzes the organization’s training methods and discusses the science which supports the training philosophy. “The main characters' stories are truly inspiring,” notes Boak, such as Iraqi war veteran, Bryson Casey from Kansas City, who was in a car accident upon returning from the war. He is now a quadraplegic, but he can face the world with a smile because of his Canine Assistant, Wagner. "Viewers will see how Bryson's fear and depression transformed into joy and hope because of his new best friend." Premieres Wednesday, April 21, 7pm Thursday, April 22, 3pm

The most accurate-ever adaptation of Anne Frank’s moving account of life hiding from the Nazis stars newcomer Ellie Kendrick (An Education) as a maturing teenager who undergoes an extraordinary ordeal. Iain Glen (Into the Storm) stars as Anne’s steadfast father, Tamsin Greig (Emma) as her reticent mother and Felicity Jones (Northanger Abbey) as her studious older sister. Together with four others, they hide for two years in the back rooms of an Amsterdam business, while Anne records their tense daily life in one of history’s most remarkable memoirs.
