ON THE COVER INDEPENDENT LENS: young@heart This month, a brings you an extraordinary story about the unbreakable bonds of friendship and the life-affirming power of music. This film chronicles a chorus like no other. Some two-dozen strong, this group of seventy-, eighty- and even ninety-somethings belt out songs by rock groups and punk artists, such as the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Sonic Youth and Talking Heads. But this film is about more than just a chorus; it is about a state of mind. Under the direction of Bob Cilman, who founded the group in 1982, Young@Heart has become a phenomenon not only in their home town of Northampton, Massachuset ts, but also in Europe, where they have given over a dozen concerts. When the chorus was first formed as an informal singing group the musical selections tended to be traditional – mostly show tunes and old-time popular songs. But over time, Cilman Director Bob Cilman has taken the group in new directions. The musical preferences of the chorus members continue to be classical, opera, and Broadway songs of the ‘40s, ‘50s and ’60s, but they are adventurous and open-minded when it comes to learning and performing contemporary rock. The film follows Young@Heart during a seven-week period in 2006 as they prepare for their “Alive and Well” concert in Northampton. For this performance, Cilman has chosen a combined program of punk, rock, rhythm & blues and a quiet ballad. Rehearsals are a bit fraught as the singers try to learn lyrics that don’t make sense (Sonic Youth’s “Schizophrenia”), grasp rhythms that are somewhat challenging (James Brown’s “I Feel Good”), and try not to trip over their own tongues (Allen Toussaint’s “Yes We Can Can”). Between rehearsals the filmmaker visits several members of the chorus at home. They talk about health issues and near-death experiences, and unanimously express their enthusiasm and love of singing with Young@Heart. The film’s presentation of the realities of aging is punctuated by the chorus’s music videos poking fun at the condition of being old (“I Wanna Be Sedated”), or thumbing their noses at mortality (“Road to Nowhere” and “Stayin’ Alive”). But above all, the film celebrates the importance of enjoying life. After all their hard work preparing for the “Alive and Well” concert, Young@Heart seems ready to go on singing for a long time to come. 2 Tuesday, January 12, 8pm LIFE Sunday, January 17, 6pm

Our Origins: Exploring the Human Spark What makes us human? What set us apart from the other great apes, and how did we evolve this way? Was it language, or reasoning, or the use of fire – or some other significant turning point over the past three million years? This documentary explores “the spark” that made human beings unique. Inspired by WNET’s The Human Spark featuring Alan Alda, this production features researchers discussing their work and includes experts on chimpanzee behavior, our earliest human ancestors, Neanderthal social development and the emergence of modern humans. HIGHLIGHTS
JA NUARY 25 - 3 1
American Experience: Wyatt Earp
H
is life is shrouded in myth and he has been portrayed by some of Hollywood's greatest actors, but these popular fictions belie the complexities and flaws
of a man whose life is a lens on politics, justice and economic opportunity in the American frontier. As a young man, Wyatt Earp was a caricature of the Western lawman, spending his days drinking in saloons, gambling and gaining notoriety as the legendary gunman in the shootout at the OK Corral. But shortly after his death in 1929, distressed Americans down on their luck transformed Wyatt Earp into a folk hero: a man who took control of his own destiny and a central figure in the American narrative of how the West was won. 2 Monday, January 25, 8pm LIFE Friday, January 29, 4pm www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience

Where to find us. a will be making technical changes to our transmitters on Thursday, January 28 at 9am. These changes may make c and g easier to receive. If you receive television using an antenna – on a new digital TV or with a converter box – you will need to perform a “channel re-scan” in order to receive all of our channels. You can perform the rescan after 9am on the 28th. Some TVs or converter boxes may use different terms for “channel scan” such as “auto tuning,” “auto scan” or “find new channels.” Check your TV or converter box users’ manual for specific instructions. All a channels are available free, over-the-air in our core broadcast area. For reasons beyond our control, not all televisions connected to cable or satellite will receive all of our channels. The table below summarizes coverage for the major cable and satellite providers in our region. Many smaller cable companies also carry a. If your provider is not listed here, please contact them for specific information.
