PACIFIC Aretha Franklin Presents: Soul Rewind Page 6

ON THE COVER Live from Lincoln Center: South Pacific Twin Cities Public Television brings you the best in the performing arts, and this month is no exception as we premiere Live from Lincoln Center: South Pacific. Lincoln Center Theater’s new production of the classic musical has won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical Revival, as well as the Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Drama League Award for Best Musical Revival. This Rodgers & Hammerstein’s favorite will air live from the Vivian Beaumont Theater and is based on James Michener’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Tales of the South Pacific. It tells the sweeping romantic story of two couples: U.S. Navy nurse Nellie Forbush and French plantation owner Emile de Becque and Navy Airman Joe Cable and a young native girl, Liat and how their happiness is threatened by the realities of World War II and their own prejudices. The original South Pacific premiered at the Majestic Theatre on April 7, 1949, and went on to enjoy a five-year Broadway run, winning countless awards, including nine Tony Awards (notably for Best Musical) and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Considered by many the finest musical ever writ ten, the score includes such musical theater classics as “Some Enchanted Evening,” “Younger Than Springtime,” “Bali Ha’i,” “There Is Nothin’ Like a Dame,” “A Wonderful Guy” and “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out ta My Hair.” Now in its 34th broadcast season, Live from Lincoln Center has received 13 Emmy Awards. The series has made the world’s greatest artists on Lincoln Center’s renowned stages accessible to home viewers in virtually every corner of the United States and is the only series of live performing arts telecasts on American television today. 2 Wednesday, August 18, 7pm

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE LOOKING FORWARD

I hope you’ve been enjoying summer and are looking forward to fall. We here at a certainly are, especially given some of the new shows coming our way, and some of the new initiatives we are working

which will look at how religion has impacted American history. This fascinating six-hour documentary will take an in-depth look at history, politics, culture and faith and how the US has

on – now and into the future.

become the world's most religiously diverse nation.

September will see the return of Ken Burns to the a line-up with The Tenth Inning, a follow-up to his landmark 1994 miniseries, Baseball. It is a remarkable program, filled with all the elements that make a Ken Burns classic: facts, insights, and inspiring stories that offer a unique take on American history.

These are but three of the many excellent shows we will share with you this fall – and they all represent what PBS and a do best: intelligent, unique, thoughtprovoking and impactful programming. They are the kind of shows you won’t find anywhere else, and as ever, I am so proud to share them with you and am so grateful for your support, which makes it all possible.

This fall Maro Chermayeff and Jeff Dupre, the filmmakers behind the Emmy Award-winning Carrier, will also return to our airwaves with Circus. This time, we will be invited to go behind the scenes of the Big Apple Circus and share the captivating journey of crew members, acrobats, clowns and other amazing characters under the tent. And then there is God in America, a joint presentation of American Experience and Frontline,

Throughout the fall, we will also be working on several initiatives that we hope will spread the impact of these shows even further, giving more people throughout our community the opportunity to share in their knowledge and insights and making the riches of public television available to future generations. Make sure you visit tpt.org in the coming months for more on these initiatives. The future is bright, with you, our members on our side. The past couple of years have seen rough economic times and a complete upheaval of the media landscape, but through it all, you have been there for us, and we have always focused on you: on offering you shows that matter, now – and well into the future. Thank you.

Good Ol' Charles Schulz

T

his a original production is a quintessentially Midwestern story of an unassuming, self-doubting man who, through expressing his unique

view of the world, redefined the comic art form. His genius lay in depicting the daily collisions of insiders and outsiders, of mundane cruelties and transcendent hopes – seeing the extraordinary in the ordinary. The "Peanuts" cast of characters are portrayed with whimsy and poignancy – and always with love and tolerance, each representing different facets of Schulz' personality and his perspectives on 20th-century America. 2 Monday, August 30, 9pm

Go behind the scenes of the first great modern royal scandal. The Queen's sister, Princess Margaret, faced a heartbreaking decision: marry Peter Townsend, a divorced commoner twice her age, and give up her right to succession; or sacrifice her true love, honor her duty and put Queen and country above all else. But was this really the case? In light of new information, this documentary reveals the truth of the Townsend affair.

INSIDE Fall PBS Pipeline

a SHOW PIPELINE

The Tenth Inning Premieres September 28-29 Thousands of bats, three home run records and one “curse” have been broken since Ken Burns last explored the history of America’s national pastime with his landmark 1994 PBS series Baseball. Now, Burns and codirector Lynn Novick update the series with The Tenth Inning. This new film tells the tumultuous story of our national pastime up to the present. It celebrates baseball’s new Golden Age – an era of unprecedented home run totals, popularity and prosperity – and sheds light on one of the game’s darkest chapters – the steroid era. The two-part, four-hour film features insightful commentary from an eclectic lineup of athletes, writers, broadcasters, fans and all-stars.

CIRCUS Coming to PBS in Fall 2010 Hit the road with Circus, a new six-hour series from the filmmakers behind the Emmy Award-winning Carrier, and take an unforgettable trip with the legendary Big Apple Circus. From the big top to the “back lot” – where the real heart of the circus beats – explore a distinctive world with its own rules, lingo and no fixed address. Get involved with the diverse characters that make up the Big Apple family. Share their fears and frustrations, triumphs and failures and find out what it really means to live life in the ring.

GOD IN AMERICA Premieres Monday-Wednesday, October 11-13 How has religious belief shaped American history? What role have religious ideas and spiritual experience played in shaping the social, political, and cultural life of what has become the world's most religiously diverse nation? God in America, a presentation of American Experience and Frontline, will explore the historical role of religion in the public life of the United States. The six-hour series interweaves documentary footage, historical dramatization and interviews with religious historians.
