ON THE COVER doc martin This summer a brings you a brand new BBC series, Doc Martin, starring favorite British actor Martin Clunes. Clunes plays Martin Ellingham, a once-brilliant and highly successful London surgeon whose life is turned upside down when he develops a phobia to – of all things – blood! He retrains as a general practitioner and decides a change of scene is necessary when a vacancy arises in the Cornish hamlet of Portwenn. Martin has fond memories of the lit tle fishing port where he spent happy childhood holidays with his Aunt Joan. He moves there to live out the life of a small-town doctor; but what he thinks will be a bucolic reliving of his youth turns out to be anything but. Despite being an excellent doctor, Ellingham lacks any semblance of a bedside manner, and he is often puzzled by the people of Portwenn. Dr. Ellingham (referred to as "Doc Martin Clunes and Caroline Catz Martin" by the locals) finds adjusting to small town life a real challenge – the office is in disarray, the medical equipment is beyond repair, and the patients’ records are a mess. He also inherits an incompetent receptionist, Elaine Denham, who resents Doc Martin's moving in. The community is horrified by their new doctor’s manners, and sets out to teach him the ways of Cornish life – with oftentimes hilarious results. Clunes is joined by a cast which includes Stephanie Cole as his aunt, Joan Norton, who provides him with support in the face of the disquiet among the villagers. And Caroline Catz plays feisty teacher Louisa Glasson, who may or may not be the new doctor’s love interest. Despite his disastrous introduction to village life, Doc Martin decides to stay and give it a go. From negotiating local dances, to girlish crushes, to maladies of all sorts, Doc Martin has his hands full trying to figure out this new life. But deep down Doc Martin is a gentle, generous soul (even if no one sees it!) and so he tries, even if his attempts are just comic blunders in the making. 2 Sundays, Premiering June 20, 9:30pm

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Made in Minnesota, Thanks to you!
It’s hard to believe we’re halfway through the year – 2010 has been a busy time for a ! As members who are invested in our mission, I want to share with you some of the successes that you have made possible. First, our National Productions unit has been busy producing shows for PBS and the nation. The year began with SciGirls, a series that aims to change how millions of girls think about science, technology, engineering and math. SciGirls integrates TV and the Web like never before and mixes science and engineering into the kind of social experience girls love.

series, MN Original. This weekly arts program celebrates the creative community of Minnesota and presents a candid portrait of our State’s best and brightest artists, the most creative and innovative, the elders and the emerging talents.
We then went on to produce Dolley Madison for American Experience. This biography of the nation’s “first” First Lady explores how Dolley’s political acumen set her apart in a time when women held no overt political power.
Lastly, in March, we received a substantial grant that will allow us to develop programming that will meet the needs and unleash the potential of our nation’s aging population.
In April, NOVA aired our documentary, Hunting the Edge of Space. The two-hour special examines how the telescope has fundamentally changed our understanding of our place in the universe and how it has revolutionized human thought across science, philosophy and religion. Later that same month, PBS stations across the nation were captivated by Through a Dog’s Eyes, a’s inspiring documentary that demonstrates how assistance dogs can change the lives of people with disabilities. We have been no less busy with our MN Channel productions. April saw the premier of our new
As I look back at our work over the past six months, I am acutely aware of what a treasure we have, both in members who support us, and in the talented people who work at a . I hope that as you reflect on this, you also feel a sense of ownership and pride, because none of this would have been possible without you. Thank you for making a one of the nation’s finest PBS stations.

American Masters
Merle Haggard: Learning to Live with Myself Meet Merle Haggard: American country music singer, guitarist, instrumentalist, and songwriter. A kind of wandering troubadour who’s led his band, The Strangers since 1965, Haggard is known as a singer’s singer and a guitar player’s guitar player – his voice, his finger picking and his interpretations are like no others. This is the story of a man who actually lived the rambling, gambling, love ‘em and leave ‘em, often brutal life that remains the bedrock of country music lyrics. 2 Wednesday, July 21, 9pm LIFE Sunday, July 25, 4:30pm www.pbs.org/wnet/americanmasters
