AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: WE SHALL REMAIN Throughout April and May, a brings you a stunning new mini-series: We Shall Remain, produced by television’s most-watched history series, American Experience. This groundbreaking program establishes Native history as an essential part of American history. Five 90-minute documentaries spanning 300 years tell the story of pivotal moments in U.S. history from the Native-American perspective. Produced by American Experience, in association with Native American Public Telecommunications (NAPT), this program upends two-dimensional stereotypes of American Indians as simply ferocious warriors or peaceable lovers of the land.
Re-enactment of Wampanoag tribesmen meeting a settler.

Tecumseh’s Vision

Chris Eyre, director of the first three episodes of We Shall Remain, has been involved with the series from its onset. “You can’t understand America in the 21st century if you don’t understand the Native experience,” he says. “What connects these five films is the resolve of their characters. This country is founded on people striving, being tenacious and moving forward… this is a look at that, through Native eyes.”
Trail of Tears
Despite decades of struggle to keep their land, in 1838 thousands of Cherokee were forced from their homes in the southeastern United States. More than 4,000 died of disease and starvation along the way. 2 Monday, April 27, 8pm

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Focusing On The Things We Value
The economic challenges facing our country, our community and each of us personally, have certainly given us all an opportunity to stop and reflect. It is at times like these that we ask ourselves, “What do I really value?” As members of a , I know that you understand the importance of public television and that you value our work. But, to be honest, I'm always surprised by the number of people who love what we do, but have never supported us financially. I guess sometimes our on-air fundraisers, the letters we send in the mail, and even the phone calls we make can seem a little impersonal. We'd really like to change that. You (yes, you) can help us by spreading the word. You know friends and family that rely on a for high quality television. Do they support us like you do?
Let your friends and family know that you have chosen to support a. Let them know that every viewer gift – in any amount – makes a difference to our work. And let them know that if they value what we do, they need to offer their financial support to keep us strong.
a, and the deep impact it has on individuals and communities. For example, shows like Sesame Street inspire young children to explore the world around them. NewsHour, Charlie Rose and Almanac offer independent, unbiased reporting about important issues. Shows like NOVA present the latest findings in science and medicine. And world-class programs like Masterpiece, Antiques Roadshow and Nature entertain and inspire. Our programming is the best on television, our online content is unique and educational, and the connections we build in the community (with our viewers and between viewers and other organizations) are unlike the work of any other media organization. I hope you'll help us spread the word and extend the circle of those who feel passionate about the work of public television. From all of us here at a , we offer a heartfelt "thank you" for your help and for your continued support.
Next time someone mentions a great program they watched on a , ask them the simple question, “Have you thanked a with a donation?” That may be all that it takes. You can also discuss the work we do here at James R. Pagliarini

A History With Simon Schama Simon Schama, one of the most watchable and likeable creators of historic television, travels through America and digs deep into the conflicts of our history to understand the country's contemporary political situation. In this four-part series, Schama explores how American optimism about the infinite possibilities of its land and resources is in danger of coming to a grinding halt; reveals how different the American attitude to war is from what outsiders assume it to be; exposes the ways in which faith has shaped American political life; and looks at the bitter conflict over immigration in American history. 2 Mondays, April 13 – May 4, 9:30pm

Call for a story! StoryLine is a phone system that children can call at any time (24/ 7) and listen to a story for free. The U.S. Commission on Reading Report “Becoming a Nation of Readers” states that, "Reading aloud to children is the single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading."
12:30 1:00 1:30 2:00 2:30
StoryLine’s goal is to increase literacy by making stories accessible and making literature enjoyable. And it is simple enough for a child to access independently. Kids can call and hear a new story each week read by local performing artists. Each month there is an over-riding theme and StoryLine publishes a flyer with the stories to be read aloud and a list of 20 or so additional titles for that theme.

Frontline: Poisoned Waters More than three decades after the Clean Water Act was supposed to make America's waters clean enough for swimming and fishing again, two iconic waterways, Puget Sound and the Chesapeake Bay, are in perilous condition. With polluted runoff still flowing in from industry, agriculture and massive suburban development, scientists fear contamination to the food chain and drinking water for millions of people. A growing list of endangered species is also threatened in both estuaries. As a new president, Congress and the States set new agendas and spending priorities, Frontline examines the rising hazards to human health and the eco system, and why it's so hard to keep our waters clean. 2 Tuesday, April 21, 8pm

Secrets of the Dead: Michelangelo Revealed More than five centuries ago, Michelangelo Buonarroti was the darling of the Catholic Church. Throughout his masterful career, the Papacy commissioned him to create many of its most important pieces, including the frescos of the Sistine Chapel and the Basilica of St. Peter. But five centuries later, new finds are revealing a darker side to the master artisan. While restoring one of Michelangelo's famous statues art historians have found evidence of Michelangelo's involvement with a clandestine fellowship trying to reform the Catholic Church from within. 2 Wednesday, May 13, 7pm

2009 The age of new media has come to politics! Along with websites, podcasts and blogs, these days, journalists have at their disposal tools such as Twitter, which allow for instantaneous posting of current events.
i s sp o n so red b y
Twitter is a free service that lets you exchange short, frequent electronic posts. These types of new services have caused a debate, with online media lobbying for the same access as "traditional" media. While the debate will likely go on for some time, Almanac: At the Capitol's Mary Lahammer is excited by the possibilities. She says, "We have a long history of embracing new media. Almanac was the first local show to be streamed on the web and broadcast in high definition, and Almanac: At the Capitol was the first local show to be podcast. Younger and tech savvy consumers expect information faster and more often, and Twitter fits that perfectly." Follow Mary on Twitter at twitter.com/mlahammer and check out her blog and other web-only features tpt.org/politics.

Lights Up: In the Heights on Broadway Beginning at a small, off Broadway theater, a group of talented young artists produced an original musical that some have called a modern day West Side Story, a Latin and Hip Hop infused musical odyssey telling the story of a neighborhood and the first generation Americans who call it home. And yet, many in the show's audiences have nothing to compare it to as it represents the first musical that they've journeyed below 125th Street to see. Opening on Broadway in spring 2008 and going on to win five Tony Awards – including Best Musical – this program follows the cast and creative team as they embark on the greatest adventure of their young careers.

education initiatives, last winter a made a donation of over 1000 bilingual educational children's books to a great organization: CLUES (Comunidades Latinas Unidas En Servicio), one of Minnesota's largest Latino non-profits. CLUES provides behavioral health and human services to the Latino community and runs numerous educational programs throughout the State. Our donation came at a perfect time as they prepared to launch a new program, “Learning Together / Aprendiendo Juntos.”
"Learning Together" participants and their parents. Photos courtesy of CLUES
Learning Together is a parenting program designed for Latino families with children where participants partake in educational activities and spend family time improving communication and building stronger relationships. Kendall Bruhl, the program's Coordinator says, "Reading is an important focus throughout this course and your gift of bilingual children’s books has been very useful! With it, we have created a classroom library from which the families can choose books to take home and read together every week. We have also given some of the books to our participating families as gifts to keep." The program asks parents to learn the program and then to serve as volunteers in the program. CLUES President, Jesse Bethke-Gomez says, "We think this may have a national reach as curriculum for school districts with Latino families across America. Parents eventually teach parents, success nurtures success and we create an unstoppable force in advancing prosperity for our children and their children’s children." He says, "On behalf of CLUES, I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank a for the generous donation of children’s books. With your partnership, we are able to advance the wellness of children and families by teaching them the value of not only reading, but also education. The donation really enhances our program!"
For more information about the Learning Together program please call 651-379-4241 or e-mail kwesterhaus@clues.org. 34
