ON THE COVER ARe you prepared for digital television? For the past year, a has been informing you about the federally-mandated transition to digital television (DT V). Well, the time is here. At the end of the day on February 17, television as we have known it will cease, and the digital era will begin. Twin Cities Public Television has been busy preparing for this change and we hope you have as well. If not, now is the time.
Remember, if you use an antenna to watch free, over-the-air television on an analog TV set – and don't have a digital converter box – then you will not receive television after February 17, 2009.
UPDATE : CONGRESS MAY DELAY THE FEBRUARY 17 SHUTDOWN OF OLD, ANALOG BROADCASTS. BUT YOU SHOULD NOT DELAY –
You can upgrade to DT V by taking one of three steps: • Purchase a DT V converter box • Purchase a digital T V set • Subscribe to a cable or satellite service. When you purchase a DT V converter box, you will find hook-up instructions in the kit that comes with the box. For a step-by-step video that shows you how to hook up your box, go to tpt.org /dtv.
GET READY NOW.
As far as antennas are concerned, in most cases, existing antennas that provide decent analog T V Visit tpt.org/dtv reception will work for digital T V. However, there are For the latest information. a number of quirks related to digital T V signals. As a result some people will need to make adjustments to their antenna; some people will need to buy a new UHF/ VHF antenna; and some people, unfortunately, may not be able to get good digital T V reception at all. If you cannot get good digital T V reception using your existing antenna, don't be afraid to experiment. Move things around, try a new ONE MORE STEP: connector cable, and, if necessary, try a different antenna. For detailed information on antennas, go REMEMBER TO RESCAN FEB. 18! to tpt.org /antenna. Remember, there is still time to get ready, but the time to act is now. The alternative, unfortunately, is a blank television. If you have any questions about DT V, feel free to call a's Member Services at 651-229-1300 or toll free at 866-229-1300.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE A Last Chance to Help
By now, most of you have heard a lot about the transition from analog to digital television that will occur on the 17th of this month. And we know that most of you have taken the steps necessary to prepare for DTV. Unfortunately, our research tells us that there are many people who are still not ready for the digital transition. We encourage you to reach out to friends or neighbors who you think may need help. They may not understand or may not be aware that television as they know it today will no longer be available after February 17th. This is not about preserving an audience for television stations – it is about preserving a vital source of information to thousands of people in our community. Television is a lifeline for many people. If there is a crisis or emergency, people turn to television. At a, we provide vital health and safety information, companionship for the homebound, and serve as a resource for new immigrants. We at a are committed to using the power of television for the good of our community, and
"Whether it is your family members with older TV sets, your not-so-tech-savvy co-worker, or your elderly neighbors, please, take a moment to ask, "Are you ready for digital television?" we’ve partnered with numerous non-profit and public service agencies to help those who may have difficulty with the DTV conversion, but we can’t reach everyone who needs help. That’s why we’re asking you to reach out to

those around you. We need to make sure that people do not lose an important resource; we need to make sure that no one gets left out when the switch occurs. In these uncertain economic times, we are especially concerned about those living on fixed incomes, and those families just struggling to get by. So whether it is your family members with older TV sets, your not-so-tech-savvy coworker, or your elderly neighbors, please, take a moment to ask, “Are you ready for digital television?” You can drive them to the store to buy a converter box, help them set up their new equipment, or help them reposition their antenna. Whatever you can do will truly make a difference.
James R. Pagliarini
There is a real danger that thousands of people in our community will not be able to see television after February 17. We hope that you can do your part, help those who are struggling, and ensure that no one in our community gets left behind.

HIGHLIGHT FEBR UARY 1 0
Pond Hockey Hockey: it is an integral part of Minnesota's culture and people. For generations, rink rats grew up on outdoor ice, on the pond. This is where hockey was born – under the open sky – where the ice is gritty and so is the play. But these days, there are new climate-controlled arenas in every town, and that’s where kids go to practice year-round. The frozen ponds are losing their inhabitants. Pond Hockey examines the changing culture of sports through insightful interviews with rink rats and hockey legends like Wayne Gretzky and Neal Broten as they compete at the 2005 U.S. Pond Hockey Championships. Called "The best hockey movie ever," by ESPN, Pond Hockey is more than just a celebration of a beloved game, it is a search for the true meaning of sport. Director Tommy Haines says, "Our story developed right there on the frozen ice of Lake Calhoun. The rink rats and former pros who came to the rink that weekend weren’t there just to win a trophy. They were there because hockey – specifically outdoor hockey – ran through their veins. Like me, they grew up on the ponds and their lives had been defined by that experience. With that in mind, we set out to discover what hockey meant to the legions of players who laced up their skates in the great outdoors." 2 Tuesday, February 10, 8pm; Sunday, February 15, 9:30pm

Dr. Martin Luther King has been thoroughly published, indexed and analyzed. But this month, a will surprise Minnesota and the nation with the broadcast of King in Minnesota: The Lost 1959 Broadcast. What viewers will see is a very early glimpse into the thinking of this thoughtful young Southern preacher, describing his developing philosophy of civil rights and civil disobedience to a Northern audience. Powerfully, the Minnesota interviewer for the broadcast was L. Howard Bennett, a Minnesota Civil Rights leader and the state‘s first Black judge. This program has been lost since its first broadcast 50 years ago. In the year when King would have celebrated his 80th birthday, King in Minnesota: The Lost 1959 Broadcast stands as a poignant reminder of King’s powerful message, his tempered delivery and the legacy of his words … both lost and now found. INSIDE MEET OUR ENGINEERS
a
Preparation, knowledge, experience, insight, ingenuity: These are all words that describe the a Engineering Department. This month, we give you a look at the folks behind the scenes who made the transition to DTV possible. Bruce Jacobs, Scott Holisky, Dave Markegard, Don Heppelmann, Ken Hillstrom, Neil Gjere, Scott Rivers, Tom Keleher, Brian Zemke, Jerry Schalinske and Mike Merrick tell us what it took to flip the digital switch.
What does the engineering department do at a? We're a group of technically minded folks (with over 280 years of combined experience) that repair dysfunctional equipment, plan for the future growth of the station, and advise others here on the best way to use available technology.
How have you prepared for the digital transition?
a Engineering Crew (Not pictured: Dave Markegard & Jerry Schalinske)
The planning for the transition has been going on for over 20 years. We have known the change was coming, even though many of the technical details were not standardized until recently. This planning is one of the reasons KTCI was the first station in Minnesota to be on the air broadcasting digitally – ten years ago!
What has been the hardest thing about the transition? It's been like trying to change a tire on your car while going down the road at sixty miles an hour. New equipment has to be installed while keeping the old running. Program interruptions are not an option, so creative ways need to be enacted to bring the new equipment on-line. It's been fun and frustrating at the same time!
Can you give us an example of some of the challenges you’ve faced? Back in December, our KTCI analog transmitter unexpectedly failed. The transmitter is quite old, built by a company that is no longer in business. Finding parts would have been difficult, if not impossible. But we needed to resuscitate the equipment to get us to the digital transition which was 70 days out. With a great deal of ingenuity – plus some duck tape and alligator clips – we were able to get the transmitter back on air.
What’s the best part of the job? Helping a plan for the digital era and beyond, problem solving, and of course, providing our viewers with great programming. 12

Parent Tips
A Love for Words Each month, the PBS Parents web site, pbs.org/parents, features an "Expert Q & A" article covering a wide range of parenting topics. Since Valentine's Day is in February, this month we focus on love – the love of words that is! Log on and read tips from literary expert and educational consultant, Julie Wood on how to instill a love of words in children. She writes, "A love of words and a rich reservoir of word knowledge are essential for children. Word knowledge allows children to understand what they read and to express themselves in writing and speaking." Julie recommends shows like Super Why!, WordGirl, WordWorld and Martha Speaks, as all four are jam-packed with language lessons. She also suggests keeping new and interesting words in colorful notebooks, as well as reading books like "How to Get Your Child to Love Reading" by teacher and author Esmé Raji Codell.

Almanac: At the Capitol
Your insider's perspective on politics
I
f you’ve seen Almanac: At the Capitol, you’ve probably seen the political cartoons of David Gillette. Ranging from the wacky and personal to the witty and perplexed, David’s commentary helps viewers understand the sometimes convoluted world of Minnesota politics. David has won numerous awards, including most recently, a regional 2008 Emmy for Best Editorialist, as well as a 2008 first place award for political analysis by the Association of Capitol Reporters and Editors. This month, David gives us a glimpse behind the sketchpad.
What’s the best part of political commentary? Easy. The energy at the Capitol. When you’re at the Capitol, there’s an unmistakable gravity to the proceedings, and despite the partisan jaw flapping, almost 2009 everyone involved is very aware of the importance of the work. As I’ve said many times on the air, it’s ego-friendly and highly addictive.
David works into the night covering the Democratic National Convention.
on camera is very real. I spent my first day at the Capitol literally chasing her around the building. Here I am, a cartoonist with no political experience, surrounded by the state’s most powerful people, and I’m running so hard my socks are falling down. I left work that day more concerned about the physical demands of the job than the on-camera stuff. Writing commentary is a pieceof-cake compared to matching strides with a oneperson press bureau. What are you looking forward to this session?
I’m looking forward to big headlines and substantial debate. We’re going to see a painful, but ultimately rigorous session in which the media spends less time than usual on partisan talking points. Or maybe I’m wrong and we’ll be back to name-calling by the time you print this interview. Either way, I’m not going to run out of commentary topics anytime soon.
How about giving us a funny anecdote?
Two words: Chasing Lahammer. Mary is a mentor and a friend, and the thing that really amazed me when I first met her was that the vitality you see
