ON THE COVER Twin Cities Public Television makes Make: Imagination, inspiration, creation: it’s what drives tinkerers, inventors and do-it-yourselfers the world over. And in January, a National Productions presents Make: – the DIY series for a new generation – through public television stations nationwide and on the web at www.makezine.tv. Based on the popular Make magazine, the show taps into what is called the “Maker Movement,” a new DIY techno-trend sweeping the country. The New York Times has dubbed the Maker Movement, “An insurgency of the inventive, the curious and the technologically restless.” The transition to T V brings the magazine’s creations to life.
Cigar Box Guitar
Make: showcases inventors and provides how-to instruction; it encourages people to take apart machines and computers and reconfigure them for new uses and shows them how to replace expensive technology with affordable homemade creations. What kind of creations? Well, there’s the digital T V antenna made out of coat hangers, a kite-mounted camera that takes stunning aerial photographs, and the VCR-powered cat feeder that feeds kit ty while you’re at work. “It’s all about innovation,” says Richard Hudson, Director of Science Production at a and Executive Producer of Make: “It’s about get ting people excited, and having them use their own imagination to explore, create, and – well – make.” Each episode begins with a profile; these are the inventors, artists, geeks and just plain everyday folks who mix new Flaming Lotus Girls and old technology to create new-fangled marvels. Then, workshop host John Park shows step-by-step how to make that week ’s creation – from the outrageous to the practical. The shows wrap up with tips and inspiration from real-life "Makers". Major funding for Make: is provided by Geek Squad. Robert Stephens, Geek Squad Founder and Chief Inspector says, "From my perspective, it's no accident that the moon landing and Star Wars were followed by the first Apple Macintosh. When you make science and technology interesting, you spark innovation." “The passion in the Maker movement is completely contagious,” says Hudson. “Everybody’s got a bit of the Maker spirit of curiosity and discovery. If you have an imagination, wonder about technology, or if you just like cool stuff – you’ll love Make:” 2 Tuesday, January 6, 7-8pm; Saturdays, 5pm, Starting January 10

Your insider's perspective on politics

ach year during the legislative session, Almanac: At the Capitol distills the complex workings of the Legislature into an easily understandable
format for viewers. The show has won numerous awards for its reporting, including recent regional Emmy wins for the show as well as for commentator David Gillette. The show’s host and political reporter, Mary Lahammer was also just named "Best TV Reporter" by Minnesota Monthly. As it heads into its 8th season, Mary gives us an inside look at the show, the talented people behind it, and what’s coming up for the Legislature this year. “I always try to boil it down to the ‘Why should I care?’ or ‘So what?’ factor – how will it affect you,” Mary says of the show. “We cover the substance of politics and have some fun along the way.” Photojournalist Butch Bowring, producer Kari Kennedy and political cartoonist David Gillette round out the Almanac: At the Capitol team. It has been a vehicle to break many stories first. The increase in traffic in recent years has been astounding.” As far as what Minnesotans can expect this year during the Legislative session, Mary notes, “As always, much discussion will revolve around edu-

A BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK
When TV goes digital on February 17, 2009, a will also be changing its channel line-up. We are taking this opportunity to optimize and improve our services. This month we chat with Tom Holter, Executive Director of Programming, to give you an idea of what to expect next month: Why the changes to the a channel line-up? Is this due to digital television? The DTV transition has given us a great opportunity to take a good look at our programming and update a few things. The transition to DTV allows us to broadcast multiple program streams on each of our transmitters. As a result, we have the opportunity to offer a range of program services across a family of a channels. This means we keep all the programming you love, but we can coordinate between channels and serve you better. What can viewers expect from this new family of services? a 2 will mostly remain the same, except that all shows will now be in high-definition. The other channels will serve a range of diverse interests; a LIFE will concentrate on cooking, travel, crafts, and do-it-yourself projects, and a MN will be devoted to the needs and interests of Minnesotans and their communities. There will also be an increase to the number of hours devoted to children’s programming, there will be 11 and 1/2 hours on a 2 and 8-10 hours on the weekend on a LIFE.
Tom Holter Executive Director or Programming
What’s happening to a 17 ? Thanks to new technical capabilities made possible by digital TV, all of the channels will be designated as “Channel 2-x,” so there will no longer be a “Channel 17.” All of the great PBS programming that aired on a 17 will now air on a LIFE; the weather will have its own station, a WX; and the Legislature will now air on a MN. Can you tell us more about a LIFE? a LIFE is a brand-new channel that we are very excited to offer, it will feature all the best in howto, do-it-yourself, and lifestyle programming. Expect great shows like America’s Test Kitchen, This Old House and Rudy Maxa’s World in primetime (7-11pm), and repeats of your favorite PBS and a 2 shows during the day.
