ON THE COVER RUDY MAXA: BRINGING THE WORLD TO YOU He’s traveled around the world, but he calls Minnesota home. This summer, our favorite hometown traveler, Rudy Maxa, brings the world to you in Rudy Maxa’s World™, an exciting new series filmed in high-definition that captures the color, excitement, and energy of some of the great regions of the world. This new show takes viewers from the bazaars of Istanbul to the temples of Delhi, from the klongs of Bangkok to the tango parlors of Buenos Aires. Rudy offers practical advice aimed at helping travelers save money and hassles on the road, yet still makes the shows entertaining for those who may never Mendoza, Argentina travel to these destinations. The new show is presented on public TV stations nationwide in collaboration with a, and Rudy recently took some time to talk to us about his new show, his love of adventure and why he calls Minnesota home. Q: Let’s talk about the new show. How did you choose the locations? A: I wanted the shows to be a surprise each week. To have a wider variety of destinations than we’ve had in the past in order to introduce viewers to a wider range of cultural and travel experiences. So I chose places I personally liked and have long wanted to share with an audience. Q: What do you hope your viewers learn? A: I hope my shows help broaden their horizons; I love London and Paris as much as the next person, but a weak dollar has made some traditional travel destinations quite expensive. I'd like to help turn travelers' attention to other great places to visit in South America, Asia and Eastern Europe. Q: Any unusual adventures on the road this season? A: Oh, there are always adventures. In Thailand, I steered my own elephant into a river! I went underwater in an aquarium in Bangkok with sharks— and India . . . the colors, the fragrances, the swirl of humanity—not to mention cows! It’s extraordinary, and high definition brings it right into the living room of the viewer. Every single destination teems with stories. I’m very fortunate to do what I do for a living. Q: How did you get started traveling? A: I’m an Army brat, so I moved every year or so as a kid and I traveled extensively for work when I was a reporter. What can I say? I’ve always loved travel. Q: If you were going to do a show on Minnesota, what would you feature? A. Living here has been a revelation to me. I had little idea of how gorgeous Minnesota can be in both the summer and—well, sometimes—in the winter. For our Minnesota episode, we'd have to take our cameras to the annual state fair! Locally, I'd be sure to feature some of the homes along Summit Avenue as well as the farmer's market in St. Paul. In Minneapolis, I'm sure we'd shoot the Mill District along the river in Minneapolis. Elsewhere, I think it would be mostly about the big, wide, wonderful outdoors.
2 Saturdays, 2pm Major funding for Rudy Maxa’s World is provided by Leading Hotels of the World, in association with Taj Hotels, and by Northwest Airlines. Additional funding by Japan National Tourist Organization and Medjet Assist.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
DIGITAL TV: HELP YOUR NEIGHBOR As a public television station we focus on community. Part of being a community member is being a good neighbor, and in the next few months, that will mean ensuring that everyone is ready for the transition to digital TV. As you may have heard by now, digital television is coming soon. On February 17, 2009 all traditional – or analog – television broadcasts will end and digital television will take its place.
"We encourage you to help your neighbor. Think of your grandparents, your parents, your friends, your neighbors, are they ready for this change? Will their televisions go dark?"
That is a little over six months from now. Unfortunately, not everyone is prepared for this transition. There are numerous barriers and complications for many people and the process can be confusing. For example, converter boxes needed for older TVs may be difficult to set up for those who are not tech savvy; not to mention the difficulty some may have in getting to a electronics retailer to purchase one.
As a TV station, we can provide information and advise you of your options, but we all need to take action. We encourage you to help your neighbor. Think of your grandparents, your parents, your friends, your neighbors, are they ready for this change? Will their televisions go dark? Remember, older TVs that are not connected to cable or satellite and that do not have a converter box will not receive anything after February 17, 2009. And remember too that for many folks TV is a lifeline. We have already started to receive calls from viewers worried about not being able to receive television. The following is a typical comment, “A lot of people who are elderly...I’m wondering how many of them will not be able to afford this and lose one of the only companions that they have.” If you know someone who you think might have trouble, give them a helping hand. Help them apply for a converter box coupon, take them to the store to buy one, or help them install it. For detailed information, visit our website at www.tpt.org/dtv. Let’s make sure we all do our part for our neighbors, our family and our community. James R. Pagliarini

magazine program. History Detectives: 6th Season premiere Season six of History Detectives features a broad range of historical periods, multiple cultures and fascinating personalities. New investigations uncover clues in Minnesota’s own Fort Snelling, and a signed volume from Lincoln’s personal library, among others.

Great Lodges of the National Parks
Filmmaker Katrina Browne makes a troubling discovery – her New England ancestors were the largest slave-trading family in U. S. history. Her film uncovers her family history while also stumbling through the minefield of contemporary race relations. In this bicentennial year of the U.S. abolition of the slave trade, the film offers powerful perspectives.
This two-part program is a fascinating tour of America's national parks and their charming historic lodges: from the edge of a volcano in Hawaii, to the Alaskan wilderness; from the rugged mountain peaks of the Rockies, to an oasis of hospitality in California's Death Valley.
