PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Focusing On The Things We Value

One of the things I am most proud of as President of a is our ability to have a tangible, positive impact on our community. We do this in a variety of ways, but perhaps none of them has been as broad in its reach as the MN Channel, which has allowed us to further the work of many organizations in our community. We created the MN Channel six years ago as a unique place to feature programming that is from or about Minnesota and its close neighbors. Since then, we have created hundreds of new programs, many produced in partnership with Minnesota's finest nonprofit and public service organizations.

What does this mean for you, our members? It means that when you support a , you are also supporting the vital work of a wide variety of organizations in our community. It means that your membership dollars help inform the community at large about important local issues.

Right now, community organizations like a need all the support they can get. So if you can make a gift at this time, to a or any of our MN Channel partners, you will be helping our community get through these rough times. This is at the core of what a is all about: Being of service to others in the community who share our mission; who understand that TV isn't just a distraction; who understand that it can also help educate, inspire and build stronger communities. We thank you for your support, which makes these partnerships possible. Every time you donate, you help strengthen the nonprofit community, and by extension, our community as a whole.

Just in the past few months, the MN Channel has partnered with a wide variety of organizations to address topics including local environmental issues, ending hunger and helping individuals break out of cycles of poverty. James R. Pagliarini

explore w hat

has to offer!

S ummer is here! One of the best ways to enjoy warm and sunny days is with your family, good friends, and of course, good barbeque.

Steven Raichlen, award-winning author, journalist, cooking teacher, and host of a LIFE's Barbecue University shares with us a great recipe for Dry-Rub Ribs. Enjoy!

Memphis Dry Rub Ribs Serves 4

* 2 racks baby back ribs (4 to 5 pounds) * 2 cups hickory chips or chunks, soaked in cold water For the mop sauce: (optional) * 2 cups distilled white vinegar * 1/2 cup water * 1/2 cup Dijon mustard * 1 tablespoon salt

For the rub: * 2 tablespoons paprika * 1 tablespoon black pepper * 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar * 1-1/2 teaspoons salt * 1-1/2 teaspoons celery salt * 1 teaspoon garlic powder * 1 teaspoon dry mustard * 1 teaspoon cumin * 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1. Wash the ribs and blot dry. Remove the thin papery skin on the back of each rack of ribs. (Pull it off in a sheet with your fingers, using a corner of a dish towel to gain a secure grip.) 2. Combine the ingredients for the rub in bowl and mix. Rub 2/3 of this mixture on the ribs on both sides. Transfer the ribs to a roasting pan and let marinate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight. 3. Set up the grill for indirect grilling and preheat to medium (about 350 degrees). Place a drip pan in the center. If using a gas grill, place all the chips in the smoker box or smoker pouch and preheat the grill to high. When smoke appears, lower the heat to medium. If using a charcoal grill, toss the wood chips on the coals. 4. Place the ribs on the grill over the drip pan and cover the grill. Cook the ribs until cooked, 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 hours. Start basting with mop sauce after 30 minutes, basting every 20 minutes. If using a charcoal grill, replenish the coals after 1 hour. The ribs are done when the meat is very tender and it has shrunk back from the ends of the bones. 5. Transfer the ribs to a cutting board or platter. Mop one final time with mop sauce and sprinkle with the remaining rub. Serve with your favorite barbecue sauce on the side.
