ON THE COVER Cathy wurzer takes on highway 61 Highway 61: Bob Dylan sang about it, and if you're Minnesotan, there's a good chance that you've driven on this highway as it winds its way down from the Canadian border to Southeastern Minnesota. Now, Cathy Wurzer of a's Almanac has taken on this iconic road in her new documentary, Tales of the Road: Highway 61. The show is part of a larger project which includes a highly successful book by the same name which was published by the Minnesota Historical Society Press. Cathy takes both her readers and viewers on a historic 4 40 mile trip that revisits the early days of automobile travel. She drives a period Cadillac the length of Minnesota Highway 61 exploring the secrets of places long gone and spinning stories about people from the past. Cathy says that the idea for the documentary came from a lit tle known book, The WPA Guide to Minnesota, the first such tour guide of its kind for Minnesota, published in 1938. She says, "I thought it might be interesting to see what that old guide said, at the time, about sites along one of Minnesota's best known highways and how many of those sites are gone today. It turns out many sites are gone, but some have simply taken a different form. Others have fallen victim to neglect and time." Cathy says she focused on, "Places that tend to get ignored. Where oil storage tanks are now, by Newport, there was an Indian sacred site that we'll tell you about. We'll stop in Hastings and Red Wing and give you a lit tle tour ... and while we'll focus on buildings and sites, we are also telling stories of the people associated with those sites." The documentary will also feature stops along the scenic North Shore before heading to a theater in Red Wing said to be haunted and a site where bootleggers used to cross the St. Croix River. As a native Minnesotan, State Highway 61 holds many fond memories for Cathy, as, she says, "It does for many, many Minnesotans. I don't ever tire of driving that road; there is always something new to see. It has been such fun and such a privilege to write a book and produce a documentary that highlights stories of places and people along one of the most iconic of highways in the country. Who knows, we've lef t out so many great stories that there might have to be a 'Tales of the Road – Part Two!'" 2 Monday, March 23, 8pm 2

Mar 30-31 page 20

Due to the digital television transition, we’re making numerous changes to a magazine. The biggest changes involve our schedule grids. We now list program information in the evenings (7pm – midnight) for three channels: b, c, and d. In addition, we’ve added daytime (8am – 7pm) schedule grids for c, and d. We had to remove program descriptions from the schedule grids; however, we have increased the

Our program index now includes an A to Z listing of show titles for the evening hours (7pm – midnight) for three channels: b, c, and d. Unfortunately, we are no longer able to show all rebroadcast times as part of our A to Z listing. Rebroadcast information is still available at tpt.org.

Here are examples of our new schedule grids and how to read them:

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE The Minnesota Video Vault:

A Treasure Trove of History for the Digital Age

Our new digital channel line-up is up and running and we are now ready to offer another exciting element for the digital age: The Minnesota (MN) Video Vault. Under development for several years, MN Video Vault is an on-demand video service that contains hundreds of hours of documentaries, performances, interviews and speeches gathered on one site – and available free via the internet. Whether you are a history buff, a teacher, a student or are simply curious about Minnesota's diverse communities, you can log on and watch 50 years of social, political, and cultural treasures from the a archives.

"Whether you are a history buff, a teacher, a student or are simply curious about Minnesota's diverse communities, you can log on and watch 50 years of social, political, and cultural treasures from the a archives." For teachers, MN Video Vault is a powerful tool as many of the video segments are tagged to relevant Minnesota State Academic Standards. In addition, all of the material is closed-captioned and, through advanced search functions, these captions can be searched to locate any word spoken within a program. The site is still under development, but we'd love for you to log on and test it at www.mnvideovault.org. Send us your comments and suggestions by clicking on the CONTACT US link at the bottom of each page. The MN Video Vault allows us to open the doors of our archives and provide access to everyone. We are proud to be able to offer our community this treasure trove of Minnesota history for the digital age.

You'll have at your fingertips interviews and speeches by the late Senator Paul Wellstone, Garrison Keillor, Hubert Humphrey and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; classic a programs like Nighttimes Variety, Newsnight Minnesota and Almanac; as well as a broad cross-section of a documentaries. MN Video Vault will also include current a productions and programs from other regional public television stations.

explore w hat

has to offer!

W hether it’s painting, yoga, gardening, cooking or learning about the world around you, c inspires you to create memories, explore new things and savor life! This month, we feature one of LIFE's stars: P. Allen Smith, of P. Allen Smith Garden Home. P. Allen Smith will help you start getting ready for spring … Enjoy!

Garden To-Do List for March. We’ll soon know if March is going to come in like a lamb and go out like a lion or the reverse. Time will tell. What I do know is that even though the weather can still be wintry, it’s time to start working in the garden. Here's a useful to-do list to start your garden off right:

* As temperatures begin to warm and plants emerge from dormancy, slowly remove

protective mulches. Beware of removing mulches too soon since hard freezes are still possible.

* Walking on wet soil will cause it to compact. So after the spring thaw wait until the ground dries to start working in your flower and vegetable beds. To test the moisture level squeeze a clump of dirt in your hand, if it breaks apart when you open your hand, it is dry enough to work. * Get your lawn mower ready for the growing season. Replace the spark plugs, clean

the air filter, remove grass and debris clogging the fins of the engine cover, and take it in to a small engine repair shop to have the blade sharpened and balanced.

* Clean water features and fountains. Make sure

pumps and lights are working properly. Remove leaf guards.

* Check your compost pile. Turn it every two weeks and keep it moist, but not wet.

* Order bulbs such as crocosmia, eucomis, gloriosa,

kniphofia and lycoris for interesting summer blooms.

* Set up an outdoor thermometer and a rain gauge.

Keep a journal of the weather and get ready to plant!

Everyday Food

Barbara Morgan: No Limits

Sandwiches are the perfect everyday food. See recipes for pressed salami sandwiches, a spinach and artichoke wrap, and a new take on up an all-American favorite: grilled cheese.

Barbara Morgan was the backup to Christa McAuliffe in the 1985 Teacher in Space program. When McAuliffe was killed in the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger in 1986, Morgan's dream of flying in space was threatened. This program shows how Morgan became a full fledged astronaut, overcoming additional, and sometimes tragic, challenges.

Welcome to WordWorld, a colorful, word-rich place where friends have fun and meet challenges through word play. Each episode of WordWorld is a fun narrative built around a wacky troupe of WordFriends, who are characters first and words second. WordWorld invites the preschool viewer to join them on comic adventures, where problems can only be resolved by "building" the right word. Word building is a unique moment when children witness a word form and then 'morph' into the thing it is! Word building reinforces the pre-reading concept that letters make words, and that words have real meaning...and power. 2 Mon-Fri, 11:30pm LIFE Saturdays, 10am

Parent Tips Presidential Fun Facts Children in the early elementary grades often enjoy memorizing facts — facts about dinosaurs, sports, animals or celebrities. They enjoy a sense of mastery and a chance to exercise their amazing powers of recall. If you have such a child, try hooking him or her on presidential politics by sharing the following trivia.

* The teddy bear was named for Theodore Roosevelt after it became known he refused to shoot a bear on a hunting trip. * Andrew Johnson learned to read from a tailor for whom he worked when he was 14. His wife taught him to write. * Harry S. Truman didn’t have a middle name, only the initial S. His parents used the initial to honor their fathers, who both had names starting with S. 16

* Baseball fan William Taft was the first president to throw the ceremonial first pitch at a game. * While president, Ulysses S. Grant was stopped for speeding in his horse-drawn carriage. He had to walk back to the White House. * The tallest president was Abraham Lincoln at 6'4"; at 5'4", James Madison was the shortest. * John Quincy Adams, the sixth president, regularly took a nude early morning swim in the Potomac River. * George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams all collected and played marbles.

HIGHLIGHTS MAR CH 2 3 -2 8

Great Performances: King Lear

W

illiam Shakespeare's unrelenting tragedy King Lear is widely considered one of the playwright's most

enduring and haunting works for the stage. The play opens with Lear's proposal to divide his kingdom among his three daughters, according to how much each can profess her love for him, spiraling forward to dramatize the king's deception, betrayal and eventual descent into madness. Sir Ian McKellen takes on its title role in this 2007 Royal Shakespeare Company production, which was performed all over the world, including in Minneapolis' Guthrie Theatre.

Princess Margaret: A Love Story It is 50 years since the world was gripped and divided by the first great modern royal scandal. At its heart was the most photographed woman in the world, the first modern royal celebrity and darling of the press. The Queen's sister, Princess Margaret, faced a heartbreaking decision: Marry Peter Townsend, a divorced commoner twice her age, and give up her right to succession; or sacrifice her true love, honor her duty and put Queen and country above all else. But was this really the case? In light of new information, this documentary reveals the truth of the Townsend affair. 2 Monday, March 30, 8pm

The Powder and the Glory Explore the story of women's entrepreneurship through the lens of the creation and development of the rival business empires of Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein. When they first opened their shops 100 years ago, cosmetics were worn primarily by prostitutes and performers, and businesses were run mostly by men. These two indomitable immigrants changed all that and transformed the way we look at ourselves. Starting from nothing in one of the few fields open to them, these creative women pioneered what is today the $150 billion global health and beauty industry.
