ON THE COVER The Botany of Desire: A Plant’s-Eye View of the World Flowers. Trees. Plants. We’ve always thought that we controlled them. But what if, in fact, they have been shaping us? Using this provocative question as a jumping off point, The Botany of Desire takes viewers on an eye-opening exploration of the human relationship with the plant world – seen from the plant’s point of view. In October, a brings you this fascinating tale based on Michael Pollan’s best-selling book of the same name as narrated by Frances McDormand. The Botany of Desire examines this unique relationship through the stories of four familiar species, relating how they evolved to satisfy humankind’s most basic yearnings. Author, Michael Pollan Linking fundamental human desires for sweetness, beauty, intoxication and control with the plants that satisfy them – the apple, the tulip, marijuana and the potato –The Botany of Desire shows that we humans are intricately woven into the web of nature, not standing outside it. “The Botany of Desire takes a world we thought we knew, and allows us to see it in an entirely new way,” says producer/director Michael Schwarz. Shot in stunning high-definition, the program begins with Pollan in a California garden and sets off to roam the world: from the potato fields of Idaho and Peru to the apple orchards of New England; from a medical marijuana hot house to the tulip mecca of Amsterdam. In 1637, one Dutchman, crazed with “tulip mania,” paid as much for a single bulb as the going price of a townhouse. How could flowers, with no real practical value to humans, become so desperately desired that they drove many to financial ruin?

The Botany of Desire argues that the answer lies in the powerful but often overlooked relationship between people and plants. With Pollan as on-screen guide to this sensuous, natural world, The Botany of Desire explores the dance of domestication between humans and plants. Through the history of these four familiar plants, the film seeks to answer the question: Who is really domesticating whom? 2 Wednesday, October 28, 7pm LIFE Thursday, October 29, 3pm 2

The Walworth Farce

DIRT ON DELIGHT

October 21– 25 Walker Art Center

“A theatrical experience that claws at the imagination for days afterwards.” — Variety Every day it’s the same…Two cardboard coffins, ten pink biscuit wafers, six cans of Harp, a wig… An Irish immigrant and his two grown sons play out the frenetic antics of farce. But once the underpinnings of their play-withina-play begin to reveal themselves, a proverbial knock on the door derails the proceedings. A hit in Galway, Edinburgh, and New York by Irish playwright/provocateur Enda Walsh.

With its tactile malleability and earthen sensuousness, clay appeals to basic impulses — starting with the delight of building form and creating ornament. Pieces from 22 artists spanning four generations range from modestly scaled pots to figurines to large sculptures, showcasing the materiality and immediacy of this material. Dirt on Delight: Impulses That Form Clay is originated by the Institute of Contemporary Art, University of Pennsylvania. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Over the last few months, you have probably seen me talking about my reasons for being passionate about public television and a . But mine is only one story out of the thousands, even millions, in our community. In my conversations with members, I've heard many reasons that people watch and support a : stories about personal enrichment, about inspiration, even about life changing insights. Everyone who watches a has a story. I recently spoke with Alfred Babington-Johnson, a community leader, a a board member and the CEO of the Stairstep Initiative and asked him why a is important to him. He told me, "I was drawn to a because of its gift to the community, embodied in presentations like The Forgetting, which deals with the critical issue of Alzheimer's and Northstar, which details the contribution of African Americans to the history of Minnesota. I continue to be enthusiastic because of the potential that a has to allow the community to discuss its issues and formulate new strategies for the future.” Babington's work with the Stairstep Initiative is all about building community; its mission is to provoke discussion and encourage others to embrace

community building as a priority. As stated on their Web site (www.stairstep.org), the organization believes that, “A spirit of community requires intentional approaches to encourage people to act as if they believe they belong together." Babington believes that a can play an important role in this effort: "a is a community resource for education and inspiration. I volunteer my time with a because you share my belief that this resource should be available to everyone - regardless of age, income, education, you-name-it, a is here for everyone!" Just like Babington, we know that you too have your own reasons for watching our shows, donating time or resources, believing in our mission, and participating in our events.

Now it's your turn! We want to know what makes a important to you: from your kids learning their ABC's with Sesame Street, to being a member of our program club; from supporting our vision for universal access to quality television, to a life-long love of Masterpiece Mystery; we want to hear from you! Please, go to tpt.org and enter the keyword “reason” to share your story with us today.

Minnesota's Deadliest Tornadoes

This month, we premiere Mary Lahammer's new documentary, Minnesota's Deadliest Tornadoes, a look at the impact of some of Minnesota's most fatal twisters. Mary sat down with a magazine to share her thoughts: How did you choose the three tornadoes you feature in the show? The first two I chose for their ferocity and the incredible impact they had on the communities they hit. The last one I chose because of my own family's connection with it. Can you tell us a bit more? The first is an F-4 tornado (winds up to 200 mph) that hit in 1886; it passed through St. Cloud and Sauk Rapids and killed more than 70 people. Sauk Rapids was really leveled, the town could have disappeared if the residents hadn't fought to rebuild. The other, an 1883 Texas-sized F-5 twister (winds over 200 mph) hit Rochester. Southern Minnesota didn't have a real hospital at that time and the need became really clear with hundreds of people injured. So, as the Mayo Clinic says, they were born in a storm. What about the third one? My great grandparents and their family were picked up inside their home in a tornado and tossed onto the prairie outside Appleton, Minnesota in 1911. My grandmother was just four years old and left for dead. She lost her mother and sister. She survived and so all of her descendants are here today because of her strength.

How do you explain these storms to a modern audience? The tornado that hit the Metro area in August demonstrates how relevant this topic still is and my team has done an amazing job of making this documentary speak to us now. Butch Bowring's stirring photography of whipping winds and ominous clouds out on the prairie really takes you there. Editor Jerry Lakso has given this a film quality look, layering as many as 20 audio channels to make you feel like you are hearing these storms. And weather gurus Paul Douglas and Mark Seeley do an amazing job bringing these stories to life. What do you hope folks get out of watching this? I see this as a tribute to my grandmother. I hope viewers will get out their home video cameras and record their family's oral history too; I hope it encourages them to preserve and explore their family history. 2 Thursday, October 8, 9:30pm LIFE Monday, November 9, 4:30pm

Parks for the People The Twin Cities' landscape was once tall grass prairie with few trees and marshy lakes. Today, it is regarded as one of America’s great ‘green’ metro areas, with tree-lined parkways, public-owned lake shores and vibrant neighborhood parks. How was this one-of-akind park system created? This documentary tells the surprising story of the origins and evolution of the park systems of the Twin Cities. Minnesota's National Park Legacy

Darwin's Darkest Hour NOVA returns for its 36th season premier with the story of Charles Darwin and the birth of the most influential scientific theory of all time. Acclaimed screenwriter John Goldsmith brings to life Charles Darwin’s greatest personal crisis: the anguishing decision over whether to “go public” with his theory of evolution. To come forward with his ideas risked the fury of the Church and perhaps a rift with his own devoted wife. This moving drama about the birth of a great idea is seen through the inspiration and personal sufferings of its brilliant originator.

HIGHLIGHTS OC TO BER 2 6 - 3 1 The Final Hours: Amelia Earhart's Last Flight This powerful documentary recreates the final flight of Amelia Earhart, the noted aviation pioneer whose historic 1937 trip around the world ended in her tragic disappearance. Shot in 19 countries, The Final Hours is based on "World Flight 1997," Texas aviator Linda Finch's honorary recreation of Earhart's planned flight. With the rare accreditation of the Smithsonian Institution, this program presents footage of Finch's flight, artfully intercut with archival footage and interviews with Earhart. Notably different from other Amelia Earhart films, this program also presents theories as to what actually occurred during the deadly flight. 2 Wednesday, October 28, 9pm LIFE Friday, October 30, 4pm

Becoming Human: Unearthing Our Earliest Ancestors NOVA presents a comprehensive three-part, three-hour special investigating explosive new discoveries that are transforming the picture of how we became human. The first program explores fresh clues about our earliest ancestors in Africa, including the stunningly complete fossil nicknamed “Lucy’s Child.” The second program asks when and why we first left our African cradle to colonize every corner of the earth. In the final program, NOVA probes a wave of dramatic new evidence, based partly on cutting-edge DNA analysis that reveals new insights into how we became today’s creative and “behaviorally modern” humans. American Experience Hoover Dam

Rising more than 700 feet above the raging waters of the Colorado River, it was called one of the greatest engineering works in history. Hoover Dam, built during the Great Depression, drew men desperate for work to a remote and rugged canyon near Las Vegas. There they struggled against heat, choking dust and perilous heights to build a colossus of concrete that brought electricity and water to millions and transformed the American Southwest. Where to find us. All four a digital channels are available free, over-the-air in our core broadcast area. Due to differences in broadcast power between our channels, some overthe-air households in outlying areas may not receive c h and a WX. We hope to increase the power of these channels soon. Please note that a no longer broadcasts on digital channel 17. For reasons beyond our control, not all televisions connected to cable or satellite will receive all of our channels. The table below summarizes coverage for the major cable and satellite providers in our region. Many smaller cable companies also carry a.
