ON THE COVER AmericAn mAsters "you must remember this: the WArner brothers story" From Casablanca to Harry Potter, the Warner Brothers story is the history of Hollywood. In 2008 the studio marks its 85 th anniversary and to celebrate, it has partnered with American Masters to produce "You Must Remember This: The Warner Bros. Story." Eighty-five years of screen icons, legendary films, and history-making achievements are detailed in this comprehensive, photo-filled treasure trove. The three-part special was produced, written and directed by award-winning filmmaker and Time magazine Senior Film critic Richard Schicke and chronicles the history of Warner Bros. in an unprecedented way, using hundreds of film excerpts to illustrate how they serve as a mirror of the values and attitudes of their times. Clint Eastwood, who has worked with Schickel on a number of projects, will narrate the documentary. “This documentary is definitely in Richard’s DNA. His fascination with Warner Bros. goes back to his boyhood in Milwaukee where the only theatre in town was owned by Warner,” said George Feltenstein, Senior Vice President at Warner Home Video. “It’s a groundbreaking work that focuses on the studio’s films as a microcosm of America’s cultural and social history.” Through the use of rare archival interviews, some of which have not been seen for decades, as well as a great deal of newly photographed material, Schickel celebrates the colorful legacy of Warner Bros. throughout the decades. Each of the documentary's hour-long sequences focus on a specific period in the studio's history, from the silent movie days and the development of Gigi sound, to the depression, W WII, the advent of television, the onset of new technologies, and even the broadening and diversification of media companies in recent years. Schickel sheds light on some of Hollywood’s greatest productions such as The Jazz Singer, Bonnie and Clyde and All The President’s Men; and legends such as Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Paul Newman, James Dean, Doris Day, Paul Newman, Warren Beatty, Clint Eastwood, Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman, Robert DeNiro, Barbra Streisand and George Clooney. "You Must Remember This: The Warner Bros. Story" is a fascinating roadmap to Hollywood’s colorful history. John F. Wilson, Sr. Vice President and Chief T V Programming Executive at PBS says, “Exploring this impressive body of Warner Bros. films to more fully understand America’s unique place in history will be a wonderful and entertaining journey.”

Locally, the Almanac team will be hard at work. Mary Lahammer and David Gillette will cover both the Democratic National Convention in Denver and the Republican National Convention from right here in downtown St. Paul. Mary will file multiple times a day on her blog and David will be contributing with his illuminating visual essays. You will find all of this content on tpt.org/politics, and of course, there will be summaries at the end of the week on Almanac. Almanac will also be the home to many local political debates this fall. Our plan is to have four Congressional Debates, a Senate debate and a “Clean Water, Land and Legacy” Amendment debate in the next three months.
James r. Pagliarini
All of this election programming, and the high priority we place on it, speaks to our hope that by informing our audience, we promote civic engagement and thus strengthen our communities.

hen Luciano Pavarotti died in September, 2007, the world lost one of the greatest voices in all of music. In celebration of Pavarotti’s amazing vocal talent and extraordinary inter-
