What a crazy 6 weeks we have had. Due to technical problems out end, but also the number of events we have been attending promoting our magazine. We took the decision to not have a July issue which took allot of stress away from us. And next month ( September ) is out 1st Birthday.. But back to this month’s issue: We have the full review from Scottish Modified Car Show 2009 which we had our indoor display at, we attended Truck Fest 2009 for a rather fun day out. We review the Isuzu Rodeo which has TV’s in the back and big chrome rims. Can’t get much better than that! And we have much more for you to read in our August issue. Also if you are into your ATV’s/ Quads and everything off road be sure to check out Traction Action ( www.tractionaction.co.uk ) it’s another magazine we launched 2 months due to the growing demand in that industry. It’s similar to TarMag, it’s a Free online magazine so be sure to check it out. We are trying to organise a special issue for you guys for our 1st Birthday issue, so be sure to check back early August for it! ENJOY....

Peugeot UK’s Kris Meeke scores good points in Madeira

The f ir st visit to Madeira was always going to be dif f icult for Peugeot UK’s Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle, due to the specialist nature of the rally. However, the dynamic duo can hold their heads up high after securing a hard fought f if th place and four championship points. Kri s Meeke now leads the IRC Driver’s Standings by f ive points. Peugeot also extended their lead in the Manufacturer s standings.

STONEMAN SCORES ELUSIVE FIRST WIN AT SNETTERTON

Alpine Motorsport’s Dean Stoneman (Southampton) finally secured his first win of the 2009 Michelin Formula Renault UK Championship during rounds 13 and 14 at Norfolk’s Snetterton circuit on August 1st/2nd. LEXUS IS-FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH

Humberside Police have taken delivery of a Lexus IS-F in order to make life more difficult than ever for those looking to travel to the region to commit crime. Specially trained officers spent 12 months evaluating a number of high performance vehicles that are set to replace the current Subarus which have proved highly successful in enabling the Roads Crime Section to target organized criminals in the area. Following a stringent evaluation process the decision was taken to purchase the Lexus IS-F after the vehicle proved to be exceptionally capable of remaining stable in high speed operational policing environments, despite carrying the extra weight provided by the ÂŁ30,000 worth of on-board com8

puters and communications equipment. The Lexus IS-F has a performance tuned 5.0-litre V8 engine capable of reaching 62mph in 4.8 seconds and a top speed electronically limited to 168 mph and was supplied by Steve Kelly, Centre Principal at Lexus Hull who has been working closely with the Humberside police regarding the sale.

The Ferrari 458 Italia is a completely new car from every point of view: engine, design, aerodynamics, handling, instrumentation and ergonomics, just to name a few. The new 4499 cc V8 is the first Ferrari direct injection engine to be mid-rear mounted. It has a very low piston compression height typical of racing engines which contributed to achieving its compression ratio of 12.5:1. Equipped with the traditional flat-plane crankshaft, the engine delivers 570 CV at 9000 rpm and, with an outstanding power output of 127 CV/litre, sets a new benchmark not only for the whole Ferrari range and the history of company, but also for the entire market segment. Maximum torque is 540 Nm at 6000 rpm, over 80 per cent of which is available from 3250 rpm. Specific torque is a record 120 Nm/litre. The 458 Italia is designed for owners for whom the priority is uncompromising on-road performance with occasional track day capability, but who still demand a car that is useable in day-to-day driving like all Ferrari’s recent models.

SUPERCHARGED AUDI S5 CABRIOLET BREEZES IN Cabriolet lovers hopeful of an Indian summer will welcome the new Audi S5 Cabriolet, which becomes available to order in the UK this month priced at £42,245 OTR and will touch down here in October. The latest A5 range flagship is powered by the same all-new supercharged six-cylinder engine that enables the previously V8-powered S4 Saloon to deliver characteristic sports car pace with atypically high efficiency, and its influence is equally palpable in this latest application. Working exclusively in conjunction with the equally economy-focused 7-speed S tronic twin-clutch sports transmission, the new unit pares CO2 output back to 224g/km and boosts economy to up to 29.1mpg, yet also powers the S5 Cabriolet to 62mph in 5.6 seconds 10 TARMAG

and on to a governed 155mph top speed. Specially tailored ‘S’ sports suspension gives the quattro system and sport differential optimum conditions in which to shine, and lowers the S5 Cabriolet body to within millimetres of its 19-inch 5 parallel spoke alloy wheels. Aluminium-look door mirrors, xenon plus headlights with LED daytime running lights, rear LED lamps, special ‘S’ front and rear styling treatments and black painted brake callipers bearing the S5 logo will also be distinguishing features. New S5 Cabriolet now open for order priced at £42,245 OTR – first deliveries in October

ISUZU RODEO LE SPORT We at TarMag have never seen such an amazing piece of kit. When it arrived at our Office we were stunned by its looks, it’s something you would expect cruising the streets of America, with the BIG rims and Black tinted windows. The Isuzu Rodeo LE Sport. And to think what comes with this vehicle is standard. We have driven pickups before but nothing like this and 12 TARMAG

we really mean it. We took this vehicle to a local farming meet, and even a local car enthusiast meet to see people shocked about how the Rodeo looks but also the kit that comes with it. As quoted by a local farmer“ Wow, it looks like a Chrome Monster Truck.” And we couldn’t agree more! Inside you have a soundproofed double cab which focuses on in-

car-entertainment with just some of the spec including a Pioneerdeveloped audio/navigation and rear passenger DVD system to keep the whole family happy. All which has been specifically engineered for the Rodeo LE Sport. The HDD Touch screen entertainment unit up front has a 10GB HDD music library which means you can keep your cd’s at home, means no need for an iPod either. The 7 Touch screen

system is also very easy to use with a great 3D Sat-Nav with TMC, speed camera detection and Bluetooth connectivity is just awesome. Comfy seating too! What else could this pick-up have, well a great reversing camera to help parking up. But you have an option to have the camera on at all times along with the Sat-Nav on the screen which we think is just 13

awesome. Something you would get with a Lamborghini. It’s not just an all singing and dancing pickup, it even looks the part. With its huge 20” Shadow chrome Blade alloy wheels with big Pirelli tyres along with loads of Chrome around the car and its big side-steps makes the Rodeo stand out from the crowd. Xenon headlamps, privacy glass, and even the door sills light up with blue neon Isuzu logo. The Rodeo LE Sport has taken on the all-new 3.0 litre common rail turbo diesel engine which manages around 28mpg but it’s to be expected due to its size. With a top speed of 109mph and a 10.8seconds to 0-60mph makes it pretty fast for its size. Allot of people advise in the wet to keep speed low on corners in the wet as the tail can be light if empty and can lead to sliding, but this is the first pick-up we have driven when its handled better than some road cars we have driven. But to summarise up if you want the looks, the entertainment and the power. Get in touch with your Local Isuzu Dealer for a test drive. If you have any questions about the Rodeo LE Sport feel free to email us... 15

long term fleet

MG TF LE500 1.8 16V Well what a strange but wonderfull six weeks we have had with the MG. It went away for two weeks for a warranty repair. We are going to mention this because we are an honest publication, but we still love the car! The fuel pump decided to pack in, but thankfully to the evey helpfull AA and our nearest dealer Dreadnought garage, callander were the most helpful dealership ever! But it did take MG head office 2 weeks to sort out the delivery of the correct 38 TARMAG

pump. But all i can write is now, the MG is back in full working order and the fun is really back! Also the tyres were starting to get a bit slick so we have upgraded to some Toyo’s courtesy of Toyo and Blackcircles.com so next month we will have a full low down on the tyres and how they are affecting the car. Apart from this the MG hasn’t been upto much this month, booked in for a few events later

for August around the country so be sure to look out for it. A water leak has developed in the boot, but because this was one of the first press cars it wasn’t sealed with the new sealant but again this issue has been fully resolved. We actually missed the MG when it was away for two weeks, the smile on our faces when getting back in the car, the first thing i said “ MG.. The fun is back!” 39

FEATURE : Bentleys Galore!

Glorious weather blessed the 60th Anniversary Bentley Drivers Club race meeting at Silverstone over the weekend of 8-9 August, a meeting first held in 1949 and which has taken place every year since then.

“This was surely one of the biggest gatherings of Bentleys of all ages you could ever hope to see – and so many of the cars are historically famous,” said Sebastian Welch, Competitions Captain of the BDC. But it’s the atmosphere that sets this meeting apart, as much as the full grids and race action. “Our aim was to celebrate 60 years of BDC racing at Silverstone with two days of ‘proper’ club racing, from highly competitive dicing on track to a

Bentleys Galore!

non-stop slideshow of archive pictures in the pit garage and family picnics on the grass at Copse. Racers and spectators responded with enthusiasm, as shown by the record turnout of 180 cars in the Bentley parade – where any BDC member who turns up in a Bentley, new or old, can drive three laps of the circuit.”

Over the two days, 18 races welcomed full grids of both Bentleys and other invited marques. One of the highlights for spectators was the chance to see modern Bentleys racing much older machinery in both the Bentley Handicap and Bentley Scratch races. Saturday’s Bentley-only Scratch race saw 25 Bentleys taking to the track, in

a race which pitted the eventual winner, the 1949 MkVI Special of Michael Higginbotham, against much older cars – such as the Vintage Bentleys of the 1920s – and much younger cars, such as the two Turbo Rs from 1990! Meanwhile, the Bentley Handicap race allowed a Continental GT (driven by Robert Gate) to come fourth overall, despite being a standard road car and looking as though it had just driven out of the showroom. Aside from the racing, other attractions included track demonstrations of the fabulous 1933 Napier-Railton, John Cobb’s 24-litre Brooklands laprecord holder; and of the mighty, 600bhp, 217mph 2003 Le Mans-

winning Bentley Speed 8. Off-track displays of Bentley race cars included past Le Mans winners, Brooklands cars, and Bentleys that have raced at BDC events throughout the past 60 years. “Those who recall the first BDC race meeting back in 1949, when the main straight was the Lancaster runway and the pits were made from straw bales, tell us that things are very different today. Nevertheless, we hope we lived up to the spirit and tradition of this great annual event,” concluded Sebastian Welch. For more information on the Bentley Drivers Club, see www.bdcl.org.

Royal highland show 2009

Royal Highland Show 2009 With Royal visits from Her Majesty the Queen, HRH Princess Royal and HRH Princess Alexandra the Royal Highland Show 2009 was a great success. With over 13,000 more visitors than 2008 meaning over 150,000 attended the show. We have all the talk in the media about the Credit Crunch and how people are struggling, but attend the Royal Highland Show and there is no sign of this. 50 TARMAG

We took advantage of this show to attend and promote Traction Action ( Our other publication in the ATV industry ) among the farming clientele but also an opportunity to speak to the manufacturers face-to-face and check out some of their product offering. Manufacturers from; Polaris, Yamaha, Artic Cat, Suzuki, Honda and a few others were all in attendance with big trade stands. With the Majority displaying their entire

product range it gave us a great opportunity to check out some of the machines. The Motoring section of the Royal Highland Show this year according to people that attended last year was smaller than usual, which is expected due to the climate of the motoring industry. But nevertheless the manufacturers were on hand with some of their latest offerings. 51

NEW PRIUS: EFFICIENT DESIGN

Lowest drag coefficient for a production hatchback, more spacious int Inside and out, the design of the new Toyota Prius plays a key role in its ultra-efficient performance and its all-round practicality as a family car. “Minimum outside, maximum inside” was Toyota’s guiding principle. At first glance, the exterior styling is recognisable as a development of the sweeping monoform shape of the second generation model. But Toyota has gone further in refining the detail of 62 TARMAG

the car’s shape to render it even more aerodynamic: the Cd measurement (drag coefficient) is just 0.25, the lowest achieved by any hatchback, This is lower even than the Cd 0.26 achieved by the current Prius. Coupled with the car’s lightweight aluminium and high tensile steel construction, this has a significant, positive impact on fuel economy and stability. The overall design is heavily influ-

terior for third generation of Toyota’s hybrid car enced by Toyota’s ECO-ICON concept. Key measures introduced on new Prius include a smaller opening in the upper front grille, to maintain a smooth airflow over the body, and a larger lower grille to cut airflow resistance and provide cooling efficiency. Flat, vertical surfaces to the front and rear bumper corners help reduce turbulence in the wheelarches. Detail elements include the aerody-

namically efficient design of the door handles and door mirrors, minimal panel gaps, smooth profiles for the doors and window seals and the shape of the rear LED light clusters. Equal attention has been paid to the underneath of the car, with covers and spats strategically placed to maintain the smoothest possible airflow.

63

New Prius is almost unchanged in its overall proportions; a modest increase in overall length accounted for entirely by the front overhang. The wheelbase remains 2,600mm – the same as on new Avensis – but clever interior packaging means there is more space in the cabin. The new dashboard design adds an extra 10mm to the cabin length, and new, slimmer front seatbacks help deliver an extra 20mm of legroom for rear seat passengers. A flat rear floor adds to the comfort factor. 64 TARMAG

At 1,490mm, Prius is the same height as before, but the highest point of the roof has been moved 100mm further back, which means more rear seat headroom. Generous, practical boot space is an important factor for family motorists and here Prius does not disappoint. Helped by the more compact battery unit beneath the floor, the space available extends from 445 to 1,120 litres with the 60:40 split rear seats folded down. This gives a flat loadspace floor and room for three golf bags.

65

New Prius is on sale from 1 August, priced from ÂŁ18,370 on the road.
