SUPERCHIPS ENHANCES LATEST POPULAR FORD 2.0 TDCI 163PS MODELS Superchips Ltd is delighted to announce a high performance ECU remap that offers a more exciting, efficient driving experience for a clutch of best selling Ford cars using the latest version of the 163 PS 2.0 TDCi turbo diesel engine. This covers top selling popular models including the Galaxy, Kuga, Mondeo and the Focus S-Max. The latest version of the Ford 1995cc, 16-valve TDCi engine was intensively analysed by Superchips technicians who identified significant performance enhancement possibilities within the models’ Delphi DCM3.5 ECU, which is easily accessed to allow a swift and painless installation. Post upgrade, the Superchips ECU remap for the Ford 2.0 TDCi engined models increases 6 TARMAG.CO.UK

power by up to 22 bhp at 3301 rpm, endowing the Galaxy, Kuga, Mondeo and Focus S-Max with a sharper, more stimulating drive. The ECU remap also transforms the 2.0 TDCi engine’s torque output, increasing the figure by an impressive 89 Nm (65 lb.ft,) with gains throughout the rev range, highlighting the emphasis Superchips places on everyday driveability. Given the recent hikes in fuel prices, drivers can be assured that due to Superchips optimisation of the Ford 2.0 TDCi’s ECU settings, extra efficiencies are realised and in most instances fuel consumption improves due to the extra low rev torque available to the driver. SUSTAINED SUB-ZERO WEATHER CAN TAKE ITS TOLL ON CARS

The big freeze has had the UK in its grip for several weeks and as snow continues to fall in some parts of the UK, Autoglym is urging motorists to consider the impact the conditions can have on their cars. In sustained sub-zero temperatures cars become increasingly susceptible to damage, outside and in. Furthermore, the UK’s leading car care specialist is advising motorists against relying on cheap, low-grade versions of winter essentials such as de-icer and screenwash, which could be ineffective in the extremes of the continuing big freeze. 8 TARMAG.CO.UK

Exterior and interior damage Very low temperatures cause paintwork and protective veneers to become brittle and increasingly susceptible to scratches and stone chips. * AUTOGLYM’S TIP: Bodywork conditioned with a polish and protected with a quality wax sealant will help the paint to retain its suppleness and therefore its resistance to surface damage. Rubber seals and wipers become more brittle, too. Wiper blades are likely to split when forced to move when frozen stuck to glass. Wiper mechanisms are not designed to shift heavy loads of

TARMAG.CO.UK

snow, and dragging the wipers across jagged ice on the windscreen will damage the blade, reducing its future effectiveness. * AUTOGLYM’S TIP: Motorists should clear the entire front and rear windscreen surfaces of snow and ice before using their wipers. Weekly treatment with a quality conditioning solution will keep the rubber supple and reduce its propensity to freeze to other surfaces. Through the coldest periods, road salt will find its way onto interior carpets and plastic door tread plates and trim.

These highly abrasive deposits often leave white residues as they dry and can cause scratches on many surfaces. * AUTOGLYM’S TIP: A quick treatment with a quality interior shampoo will help remove deposited grit and salt from carpets, upholstery and plastic trim. More information about Autoglym’s range of premium vehicle-care products, and details of nearby retailers, is available at www.autoglym.com or by calling 01462 677766.

ALL-NEW JAGUAR LINE UP LEADS TO 2010 SALES SUCCESS In the year Jaguar completed its revitalized product line-up with the new XJ, it has seen positive sales growth from all three of its current models the XK, XF and XJ. Meanwhile, our volume model the XF, which was launched in 2008, has seen its best ever sales year and is up 25 per cent versus 2009. The XK is up 15 per cent in 2010 - double that of sector growth.” He added: “Desirable new models, competitive offers and a cut-through TV advertising campaign for XF and XJ are helping to drive retail sales.

customers has been incredibly positive. We look forward to welcoming them home.” In the UK, 12,687 XF were sold in 2010 compared to 10,112 the previous year, up 25 per cent in a segment that experienced growth of 19 per cent. Sales of the XK grew more than double its sector trend with 1641 cars sold compared with 1430 in 2009, an overall improvement of 15 per cent. Meanwhile, the all-new XJ that was named Top Gear Luxury Car of the Year, has achieved segment leadership despite only going on sale in May 2010. For more information go to www.jaguar.co.uk.

EDDIE STOBART DELIVERS CHRISTMAS IN FESTIVE TV SPECIAL Following an extremely successful first series of the Eddie Stobar t: Trucks & Trailers observational documentar y, Channel Five will be broadcasting a oneof f ‘Christmas Special’ at 8pm on Monday 10 Januar y 2011. The hour-long show, entitled Eddie Stobar t: Trucks, Trailers & Tinsel, gives some idea of the seasonal challenges experienced by the Eddie Stobar t transpor t company during one of the harshest Decembers in 12 TARMAG.CO.UK

the firm’s 40-year histor y – and the dedication from its drivers to ensure ‘Stobar t delivered Christmas’ to UK consumers. The show goes behind the scenes to follow the drivers who help transpor t 375,000 Christmas trees from the far nor th of Scotland, nearly 5 million toys to shops and warehouses and 200,000 turkeys during the weekend before Christmas.

It shows how the logistics company battled to keep its depots open and trucks moving through some of the worst snowfall in years. In conditions that nearly crippled the UK transpor t network and brought many businesses to a complete standstill, the Stobar t staf f fought hard to keep supermarkets and stores fully laden with festive food and drinks. Last season’s opening series of Eddie Stobar t: Trucks & Trailers achieved fantastic viewing fig-

ures for Five and resulted in a raf t of new members joining the Stobar t Members Club. Stobar t’s promotional depar tment was inundated with requests for information on the company’s fleet of 2,000 trucks as ‘Stobar t Spotting’ fever spread throughout the UK and sales of its merchandise and model trucks reached record levels.

Managing Director of Mitsubishi Motors in the UK, J i m Ty r r e l l , h a s h a i l e d t h e New Lancer range as a ‘revolution’ for the marque, with its sporty styling, keen pricing and motor spor ts ‘halo’ provided by the eagerly awaited Lancer Evolut i o n X . B u t g i v e u s m i nus 20 temperatures and some snow and lots of it and how well does this 330bhp 4wd beast perform. We have to agree that the Lancer Evolution, in all its incarnations, has established itself as a global per formance car icon, providing “super car slayer” per formance at a fraction of super car pricing. Since 1992, Lancer Evolution has remained at the top of its game. Generation af ter generation, it has gradually improved to maintain that leadership on road and track, backed by the legitimacy of a peerless motor spor ts track record. After driving the 300bhp Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X a good while ago it was

a great car to drive, loads of kick and punch and it just kept going and gripping to where you wouldn’t tr y and go at speed in any o t h e r c a r. B u t s p e e d i s n ’ t ever ything! Af ter a decade of competing with Subaru with its Impreza Sti the Lancer Evolution X’s maturity and sophistication in design a n d te c h n o l o g y, a s we l l a s its devastating efficiency and sheer driving pleasure, call for a new set of benchmarks without direct competitors to set the tone: And with all this high tech intelligence, the Lancer Evolution X remains fantastically efficient on the road. Thanks to the Super- All Wheel Control ( S - A W C ) a n d Tw i n C l u t c h S S T, i t o f f e r s o n e o f t h e most engaging and rewarding drives available at any price, without putting off die-hard enthusiasts and former Lancer Evolution owners alike. One thing that stands out to us on the Lancer Evol u t i o n X i s i t s Tw i n C l u t c h S S T. I t d o e s n o t r e q u i r e

any operation of the clutch or shifting by you the drive r, s o s h i f t i n g t i m e a n d speed does not depend on the individual. This allows you to concentrate on steering and makes for safer and more accurate vehicle operation Another feature we used allot when we had this 330bhp SST Lancer Evolution X was its S- AWC system. This system allows us to choose a mode of driving to the current road conditions. • ‘ t a r m a c ’ fo r d r y, p ave d surfaces •‘gravel’ for wet or unmade surfaces •‘snow’ for snow covered surfaces With the weather conditions at -20 and lots of snow we never had the c a r s e t t o Ta r M a c s e t t i n g , anything below 0 degrees we switched to Gravel and then onto snow depending on the road conditions. I think having the weather conditions we had was a good test for the car in a way as it was down to practicality and got to 16 TARMAG.CO.UK

see a dif ferent side of the Lancer Evolution X that we would off with hot and dry weather conditions. It has its ups and downs i n t h e w e a t h e r, y o u c o u l d be plotting along an untreated road in snow mode and turn into the corner at 20mph and the back end would kick out! Other times you could be on a slushy treated road doing 60mph and it has no problems at all. I don’t think this car was made for the weather conditions we have suf fered recently and that its more at home with hot roads and warmer temperatures for it to per form better and to see its true colours. Driving on untouched fresh snow the car was outstanding and had confidence like you wanted to go rally driving! I think we need to get the Lancer Evolution X back up when the weather improves and we have been recommended by Mitsubishi’s delivery drivers that we get our hands on the FQ400 for some summer loving! sound system of choice is the new premium system specifically designed for the Mitsubishi Lancer family by Rockford Corporation and offered under the Rockford Fosgate‘brand, in parallel to a more traditional unit. The system uses a total of nine speakers in seven locations. The speakers use materials best matched to their particular location

18 TARMAG.CO.UK

and are optimally laid out to create the ideal sound field space. Must admit that the sound system in the Lancer Evolution X is more than adequate, the sound quality is outstanding and having an internal storage of music to save cd’s being ever ywhere is a really good idea! The built in Sat Nav is also ver y good, easy to understand and program.

The new Lancer Evolution X has 10,000 mile ser v ice intervals8 and is also available with a Mitsubishi Service Plan at just £495, covering the vehicle’s first three scheduled services and the 1,000 mile oil change, and comes complete with a 3-year unlimited mileage warranty and panEuropean roadside assistance package to provide

TARMAG.CO.UK 19

entirely worryfree motoring. Good idea to take on their ser vice plan as i can imagine it could g et p r i c ey.

Great car overall, but not so sure about it in the weather conditons we had. Hopefully have a better review/feature in the summer when the weather improves.

A modern interior design that is both practical and comfor table for its occupants is also a strength of the new Peugeot 508 range which will be available in five trim levels: Access, SR, Active, Allure and GT. Seven power train options will

The HDi 112 diesel engine is available in two versions, with either a five-speed manual gearbox or Peugeot’s innovative e-HDi Stop & Star t System with a six-speed electronically controlled manual gearbox (EGC). The fitment of the eHDi Stop & Star t System technology on the 508 enables customers to reduce fuel consumption (up to 15% in urban driving) and with the fitment

of the EGC gearbox it produces just 109 g/km of CO2 in the Saloon and 110 g/km in the SW version. The Peugeot 508 is also available with two dif ferent front suspension configurations. An all-new pseudo McPherson type front suspension will be the main option on the majority of the 508 range. As well as improved driveability this new set-up reduces weight, as it is 12k g lighter than the design featured on the Peugeot 407. The Peugeot 508 ‘GT’ model features a drop link double wishbone front suspension advancing the suspension design similar to the 407. The use of a linked double wishbone helps separate suspension and steering forces to improve road holding and steering accuracy. At the rear, the entire range is equipped with multi-arm suspension. This is designed to ensure excellent ef ficiency with maximum body control and ride comfor t due to its superior control of longitudinal and transverse forces.
