FORD CHALLENGES ANN WIDDECOMBE Ford invited The Right Honourable Ann Widdecombe to swap dancing for driving in a Strictly Come Parking challenge featuring Ford’s Active Park Assist technology on the allnew Focus. The challenge put Ann’s reverse parking skills to the test as a panel of judges scored her technique, spatial judgement and finesse as she attempted a manoeuvre often feared by many of Britain’s drivers. Ann also tested Ford’s Active Park Assist, which controls the steering of the car into a parallel parking space, while the driver concentrates on the accelerator and brake. Ann is no stranger to competition, having forged a successful political career that has spanned over two decades and, more recently, appearing as a popular contestant on BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing. Describing Active Park Assist, Ann Widdecombe said: “It is any woman’s parking dream.” A video of Ann’s experience with Active Park Assist can be seen at the FordUKTV youtube channel: www.youtube.com/user/ FordUKTV?feature=mhee#p/u/0/ H3onYHc2S-o

Parallel parking can prove quite problematic for Britain’s drivers according to a recent survey poll commissioned by Ford, which found that 39 percent of UK drivers needed more than one attempt to complete the manoeuvre. David Calder, Ford of Britain medium car product manager, said: “The all-new Ford Focus only went on sale a few months ago and already one in 10 is sold with Active Park Assist. It’s proving popular as a parking aid, which first checks the space is big enough for the car and then helps the driver to park in it in one smooth attempt.” Active Park Assist is available on new Focus, C-MAX and Grand CMAX models. The system takes the stress out of parallel parking by employing 10 ultrasonic sensors mounted on the sides of the vehicle and on the front and rear bumpers. Once the system is activated, front side sensors constantly scan for gaps between cars parked at the side of the road, alerting the driver to a suitable space with an audible chime and via a visual display in the centre console. Parking manoeuvers can be carried out at speeds of up to 10km/h and the system is designed to park 150mm from the kerb to avoid damage to wheels and tyres.

VOLKSWAGEN STARTS PRODUCTION OF THE NEW BEETLE The Beetle wrote a success story in the USA in particular: That is where the mobility icon from Wolfsburg was sold almost five million times between 1949 and 1981. The New Beetle took up the thread of this Beetle Mania, with a total of 1.15 million units built in Puebla selling between 1997 and 2010. The latest Beetle celebrated its world premiere in April this year and will be in dealers’ showrooms in Germany from this fall. The Puebla plant is the largest automobile factory in Mexico and one of the Volkswagen Group’s biggest vehicle manufacturing plants. It

supplies North and South America as well as Europe with the new Jetta volume model. The Beetle and Golf Variant are built exclusively by Volkswagen de México for world markets. In 2010, the factory produced some 435,000 vehicles. Puebla also manufactures engines for the American continent and with its workforce of over 15,000 is one of Mexican industry’s largest employers. Volkswagen has officially started production of the new Beetle in Puebla, Mexico. Cant wait to see it!

CATERHAM CARS ENTERS CHINESE MARKET Caterham’s legendary Seven will be sold in China for the first time after Caterham Cars signed an exclusive deal with new importer, Courtenay Trading International (CTI). CTI is looking to appoint six retailers in key provinces of China over the next year and is targeting initial sales of between 30 and 50 Sevens in its first year of operation. All of Caterham’s current EU5-compliant cars will be sold – Roadsport 120, Superlight 120, Roadsport 175, Superlight R300 and CSR 175 – with the first Sevens scheduled to arrive in China in January 2012. LET THE C O LT MEET THE RALLIART

Derived from the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X one of our favorite cars here a t Ta r M a g , t h e C o l t R a l l i ar t is almost like its baby b r o t h e r. I t h a s t h e p e rformance and the looks and is even prices competitively in the super mini c a r c a te g o r y. Powe r e d by a 1 47 b h p 1 . 5 Tu r b o c h a r g e d MIVEC engine the Colt Ralliar t has impressive figures when it comes to per formance which impressively gets from 0-62mph i n j u s t 7. 4 s e c o n d s a n d will top out at a staggeri n g 1 31 m p h w h i c h i s a l l o t f r o m t h i s l i t t l e c a r. The Colt Ralliar t takes its looks from the Lancer and isn’t as wide looking at the Evo. The high MPV look of the car means there is plenty of space for four people and ample headroom and leg room. Boot space isn’t bad con-

sidering its a super mini. The interior has the Classic Mitsubishi good build quality and feel along with that sporty look with the Ralliart Edition! The seats are very figure hugging and hold you tightly but comfor tably enough for longer journeys but also enabling you to enjoy the car’s sporty ability when it comes to the bends! Sporty dials, aluminum pedals, silver instrument surroundings also remind you that you are in the more spor tier version of the Colt. The Raiilart edition has managed to reduce the Colt’s body roll with tuned suspension which enhances the steering and crea te s b et te r s t a b i l i t y. C u rtain airbags and rear disc brakes as standard also making sure safety was a priority when designing this model. We did find the steering when intown to be a bit heavy but out in the open you notice you are driving a more sportier hatch back with its stif fer chassis showing no hesitation going into corners.

29

The turbo kicks in around 2,000rpm so its easy to keep in the power band but we found changing up early meant the power stays with you. The 5-speed manual gear box has been nicely paired up with the engine to delivery shor t, precise and very spor ty shif t! We didn’t have any problems with this. Its a Mitsubishi so we expected this to be faultless so they have done well here. The exterior of the Colt Ralliar t takes the mesh black grille look f r o m t h e L a n c e r, a l most giving it a “Jet Fighter” look! The lower and wider body also enhances its sport looks! 16” cool spor ty alloys in grey also give the car more aggression and looks the part! A simple turn of the key and pressing the accelerator results in a satisfying note emerging from under

TARMAG.CO.UK

the bonnet from the spor ts exhaust. Large rear spoiler and all round Mitsubishi styling makes you aware you aren’t in any old Colt! The Colt Ralliart comes in a three door or fivedoor variant with the three-door the better looking of the pair! To s u m u p t h i s c a r i t s inexpensive, ver y well equipped, its got the looks and defiantly puts a smile on your face! The Mitsubishi Colt Ralliart has all the right ingredients for the Super Mini fan! But it deliverers allot of fun for not much money and when we are in times of the so called Credit Crunch and rising fuel prices this defiantly should be on your shopping list. Don’t just take our word for it, get intouch with your local dealer now for a test drive or fur ther details!
