PREVENT BANK HOLIDAY BLOWOUTS Drivers preparing to get away and make the most of the final Bank Holiday weekend of the year are being reminded to check their tyre pressures before setting out. Tyre pressures should be checked at least once a month or before a long journey and should be adjusted for any additional loads being carried. Motorists travelling on under-inflated tyres are much more likely to suffer a serious blowout endangering themselves, passengers and other road users. “Too many drivers experience a dangerous blowout, particularly over the August bank holiday weekend, simply because they have not taken the time to prepare their car properly beforehand,” explains Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe. When tyres are under-inflated or overloaded, extra heat builds up within the tyre causing its internal 6 TARMAG.CO.UK
components to separate and eventually fail in a spectacular manner. This is a particular problem when cars are travelling at high speeds for a long period, such as motorway journeys. Not only is the blowout a problem for the driver who has to try and control the vehicle, but other roads users are also put at risk from any tyre debris left in the carriageway. Tyre pressures should be checked when the tyres are cold using the manufacturers recommended levels. Many vehicles require higher pressures when carrying heavy loads. Details of the pressure settings can be found in the driver’s handbook, inside the fuel filler cap or on a plate located on the driver’s door sill or pillar. For more information about tyre safety, visit www.tyresafe.org.

THE PEUGEOT 3008 HYBRID4 By launching the world’s first diesel full hybrid vehicle - the 3008 HYbrid 4 - Peugeot will be writing a new chapter in motoring history. The combination of a fuel efficient 2.0 litre 163 bhp HDi diesel engine and a 37 bhp electric motor is the optimal combination for a hybrid vehicle. Unlike previous hybrid vehicles which have chosen to use a less fuel efficient petrol engine, the Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4’s diesel engine provides superior Combined Drive Cycle fuel consumption of 74.4mpg, and CO2 emissions of 99g/ km. In terms of performance, the Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4 benefits from the combined power of the HDi diesel engine and electric motor during acceleration and when an immediate surge of power is required (the “boost” function). The maximum combined power output is 200 bhp, 163 bhp from the 2.0 litre HDi FAP diesel engine and 37 bhp from the electric motor. A maximum torque of 500 Nm is available, split with 300Nm at the front from the HDi diesel engine and 200 Nm at the rear generated by the electric motor. The 3008 HYbrid4 will be produced in France (in Sochaux and Mulhouse) and marketed in the spring of 2011 in Europe.

It’s mission accomplished for the Citroën DS3 R3, which made its competitive debut this weekend. Bryan Bouffier and his co-driver Xavier Panseri claimed two-wheel drive and Group R victory on the specialised Irish roads of the Ulster Rally, ending the event in a superb fifth place overall.
The latest challenger from Citroën was straight in at the deep end, facing much more powerful cars over the slippery and bumpy asphalt roads of Northern Ireland. Bouffier and Panseri steadily built up their pace over the course of the weekend, but the DS3 R3 dominated its class right from the beginning. The opening day on Friday allowed the Frenchman to get used to the car and the conditions, and he got quicker and quicker with every stage. After the 53 miles that made up the first leg, Bouffier returned to parc fermé in seventh overall. During the morning loop of Saturday’s stages, the Citroën DS3 R3 continued its progress by making up another place. The crew ended on a high by setting four blistering stage times and claiming fifth overall at the finish.

SPARK OF CREATIVITY! Young British car artist Ian Cook wowed the crowds at this week’s Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship meeting at Silverstone, Northants, by unveiling the biggest remote control car in his paint-splattered collection. The 27-year old, from Solihull, West Midlands, creates his images by driving remote control cars and rolling used car tyres through acrylic paint. But his latest toy, the Chevrolet SpART, takes that theme further. The stand-out Spark – based on one of the key models in Chevrolet’s market-leading 5-Year Promise aftercare package - draws influences from other historic art cars, as well as Chevrolet’s 10 TARMAG.CO.UK
global racing liveries. With an extended aerial completing the tribute to the remote control car, Cook’s latest artistic tool is the latest in a series of Art Sparks created by Chevrolet Europe in the past year. The first, a unique interpretation of the car by German fashion designer Smeilinener, made its debut at the final of the Young? Creative? Chevrolet Art Competition in Berlin last October. Examples of Ian’s work, and videos of it being created can be viewed at www. popbangcolour.com

THE NEW CLS - THE NEW DESIGN ICON FROM MERCEDES-BENZ

The propor tions remain as spectacular as ever: long bonnet, narrow-look windows with frameless side windows, dynamic roof sweeping back at an angle t o w a r d s t h e r e a r. T h e fo u rdoor CoupĂŠ from MercedesBenz immediately made its mark in 2003 as a new style icon. Now the proportions are the same - and yet ever ything is dif ferent: the second generation of this design trendsetter has adopted a completely new look.
What immediately strikes the eye is the innovative front design, which is reminiscent of the MercedesB e n z S L S A M G . V i s u a l l y, t h e radiator grille is not integrated into the bonnet but i s fo r m e d s e p a r a te l y. T h i s highlights the long, sporty b o n n e t e v e n f u r t h e r. The typical CLS outline, with its elegantly long proportions, is the dominating attribute of the new model. The front edge of the structure, above the mudguards, which slopes off towards the rear - known as the dropping line

by designers - is not only a novel design feature but also represents a new interpretation of a formal design element harking back to the uniquely rich wealth of forms present in historic Mercedes spor ts cars. The interior of the CLS is also distinguished by a timeless design which combines straightfor ward elegance with innovative details and handcraf ted per fection. An eye-catching feature is the wrap-around ef fect of the cockpit: a high line sweeps from the driver’s door over the instrument panel support and across to the front p a s s e n g e r d o o r. T h e c e n tral display has also been integrated harmoniously into the upper par t of the instrument panel. At the same time, the downward sweeping side line on the doors continues the dynamic dropping line of the exter i o r. The interior can be given an even more progressive look with the addition of piano lacquer or carbon fibre trim elements. Handcrafted per fection once again plays a prominent role in the production process. Up to seven layers are applied and polished for the piano lacquer trim, for example, until the desired high-gloss finish is achieved. INFINITI SEES THE PARKING CAMERA FROM A NEW ANGLE Infiniti, the first car manufacturer in Europe to introduce a 360 degree parking display, will again move the goal posts - or should that be gate posts - when it adds Moving Object Detection to its Around View Monitor system. The technology which is currently undergoing final testing
in Japan uses both the dashboard’s central screen display and a loud chime to notify the driver of objects moving around the car during parking . And not just at the front and rear either. Anything moving around the side of the car is also detected. It works when star ting the car, or when driving at low speeds. This tech-
42 TARMAG.CO.UK
TARMAG.CO.UK 43
nology helps supplement the driver’s vision in situations such as leaving a parking space or when emerging from a junction with poor side visibility. Or indeed when arriv ing home af ter a long day at the of fice and the family dog is happy to see you. Around View Monitor was launched for the first time globally in October 2007 by parent company Nissan and has been available on the Infiniti EX and FX crossovers since 2008. Then earlier this year, as any spec geek will tell you, Infiniti standardised the feature on its EX and FX Premium grades across Europe. Around View Monitor assists the driver during parking with a screen display and pieces together a bird’s eye view of the car and its surroundings giv ing audible warnings when the car is near an object. In addition, a “wide view function” provides a 180° view from both the front and rear ends of the vehicle at the press of a button - a useful function at junctions with poor right-andlef t visibility. It works using four cameras - one in the front
grille, another above the rear number plate and one more under each door mirror – and means there’s no excuse for curbed alloys. Just as well giv en those of the FX30dS measure an enormous 21 inches. The addition of the new Moving Object Detection function will fur ther enhance the currently available Around View Monitor system without the need for any additional sensor. It will be introduced within the next year or two depending on market. And now for the small print. Around View Monitor and Mov ing Object Detection are supplemental features. The driver is responsible for making sure his or her surroundings are safe before proceeding. For more information on the Infiniti range of vehicles available in the UK check out : www.infiniti.co.uk
