NISSAN 400 temporary jobs created by Qashqai demand

Nissan is to launch a temporary third production shift at its manufacturing plant in Sunderland in response to continuing high demand for the award-winning Qashqai. Throughout 2009 the plant has been working hard to satisfy orders on two shifts, but sales of the popular crossover have now reached levels where demand is out-stripping supply. And the model will become even more desirable in March when an extensively updated version goes on sale across Europe. Therefore, from May, a nightshift will be added to the Qashqai production line. Although the market will dictate how long the nightshift remains in operation, it is

6

expected to be maintained for around six months. To support this, recruitment will begin next month for 400 new fixed-term manufacturing posts at the plant and allow retention of an existing 160 Temporary staff. It is anticipated that additional posts will also be created across Nissan’s supply chain. Nissan first implemented a temporary nightshift at Sunderland in June 2008 to satisfy unprecedented demand for the model. This was withdrawn last January in response to the global economic crisis. The updated Qashqai will be followed in the autumn by the sales launch of the all-new Juke crossover, which will also be produced in Sunderland.

PEUGEOT 308 CC GETS SIX APPEAL The Peugeot 308 CC now has extra six appeal with the introduction of a new 1.6 litre 156 bhp Euro 5 THP turbo-charged petrol engine and a new 6-speed automatic gearbox. Positioned as the flagship of the 308 CC petrol range the new 308 CC THP 156 automatic sees the introduction of a new “AT6” 6-speed automatic gearbox, further strengthening the vehicle’s image as a distinctive and dynamic vehicle. The new “AT6” automatic gearbox has been developed by “Aisin AW” to specifications defined by the PSA Peugeot Citroën group. Close in engineering terms to the “AM6” (fitted to the group’s most powerful HDi diesel engines – V6 HDi, 2.2 litre and 2.0 litre HDi), this new gearbox is designed to withstand a maximum torque of 300 Nm (450 Nm for the AM6). Lighter and even more compact than the AM6, the AT6 has been designed to reduce the vehicle’s fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, (around 7% less than the previous model). It also benefits from a more efficient torque converter and a significant reduction in internal friction losses. Particular attention has also been paid to the quality and speed of the gear changes in terms of smoothness, synchronisation and responsiveness. Two driving modes are possible: automatic, for quiet, stress-free driving which adapts to the user’s driving style, and a more active mode thanks to the sequential selection control. This new automatic model will be available in SE and GT trim levels, unlike the current THP 140 automatic model which was only available in SE trim level. 7

NEW ASTRA ENCASED IN GIANT SNOW GLOBE

Vauxhall Motors today provide a sneak preview of a giant, bespoke snow globe, specially designed and built for the hotly-awaited Vauxhall Ice Skate event. The one-of-a-kind snow shaker, will be filled with over 50 bags of artificial snow for the much anticipated ice skating disco, to take place in central London this Thursday. At five metres in diameter the globe is easily large enough to accommodate the New Astra. After the astounding success of this summer’s Vauxhall Skate event, the company has teamed up with some of the UK’s best music, design, and style talents to drive some winter excitement into London. Celebrities to DJ at this ‘Enchanted Evening’ include chart-topper Mr. Hudson, Sting’s talented daughter Coco Sumner and radio 8

and television presenter George Lamb. In addition to the snow globe-encased Astra, the famous and fun Car-aoke Corsa will be making a stylish return, with special hosts signed up to get the car rocking with the ultimate party tunes. Vauxhall Motors continue their long-standing relationship with up-and-coming design talents for this event. Having teamed up with British fashion designer Emma Bell and illustrator Kate Moross for the last two successful events; Emma Bell’s Vault for Vauxhall and Vauxhall Skate, this year sees collaboration with illustrator extraordinaire Si Scott. Famed for his distinctive hand-inked and penned artwork style, Si has created the perfect winter-inspired event logo for this truly unique event.

Waterless Car Wash & Wax Imagine if you had one product, two cloths, and it left your car with a show room shine finish, but the best part, it will only take 10-15 minutes and you won’t be soaking wet afterwards. It’s a Hand applied Wash and Wax solution called PermaClear Pro ‘DRY’ Clean – Waterless Car Wash & Wax system which is then wiped of with a micro-fibre towel, and then use the 2nd micro-fibre towel to buff to a show room shine finish. It really works. If the area is heavily soiled with dirt, road grime, tar, bird droppings, its advised you spray a little more formula on the area, leave for 30 seconds, then wipe, and new clean towel and buff to show room shine finish…. It’s really that easy! £9.99 - www.thewash.biz

MG TF LE500 1.8 16V

Snow, Snow, Snow, Snow, well over 2 foot of snow to be precise. The MG TF LE500 isn’t the best snow mobiles around. With its rear wheel drive and midengine it doesn’t help when tackling blizzard icy conditions. And with its low setup it easily gets stuck in the thick snow. I think the car didn’t move for about a week with 2 foot of show covering the car and on the ground it wasn’t the best. FEATURE : King of scrappage

As the best selling car under the scrappage scheme, Hyundai’s i10 has been responsible for the destruction of 20,000 ‘bangers’. James Baggott, the editor of Car Dealer Magazine, decided to see if the scrap cars could take their revenge. James entered an i10 city car into a round of the national Banger Championship against 35 other cars at Wimbledon Stadium to see if the Hyundai could

smash more than sales records. The i10 has been the undisputed king of the scrappage scheme with sales up 263% in 2009. The car – a pre-production test mule – was donated by Hyundai. Showing just 823 miles on the clock, this top-of-the-range Style model has a list price of £8,885. However this par ticular car has to be scrapped as it was an early prototype which has

The i10 was prepared by www. Cecilsrentarookie.co.uk – a firm that specialises in sor ting cars for their ultimate date with destiny – before Baggott put it to the test. All the interior trim was stripped, glass removed and bumpers binned in order to comply with race rules. Worr yingly for James, the i10’s four airbags also had to disabled, although a crude roll

Unfor tunately the i10’s racing debut was shor t-lived – an assassin in a Nissan Sunny shunted the Hyundai from behind and punted it into the safety barrier just one lap into the race. To read more, click the following link for Baggott’s blog: www.cardealermagazine.co.uk

FEATURE : COMBAT THE CORR

Motorists are being urged to give their car some serious TLC following one of the coldest spells of winter weather in the UK in living memory. Leading car care brand Autoglym has highlighted that the huge quantity of salt deposited on road surfaces over recent weeks – averaging 60,000 tonnes per day across the UK – will have a damaging affect on vehicle paintwork and exterior trim.

“Road salt can speed the corrosion of unprotected paintwork, as well as damage exposed plastic and rubber surfaces,” says Paul Caller, Autoglym’s CEO. “A thorough wash, followed by the application of a quality polish or wax, is highly advisable given the unusually high volume of salt now lingering on UK roads.” Autoglym’s Bodywork Shampoo Conditioner is an ideal way of gently removing salt and grime. For the perfect way to cleanse paintwork, Autoglym’s recentlylaunched High Definition Cleanser and Surface Detailing Clay Kit will provide the best possible conditions for applying a coat of wax or polish. Autoglym’s Super Resin Polish, or the company’s range-topping High Definition Wax, can then be applied to give longlasting protection from the elements, as well as superior depth of shine. Once protected, a vehicle should then require

44 TARMAG

only occasional washing to remove dayto-day dirt.

Exterior glass is always harder to keep clean in winter months, with road-spray quickly building up on headlights and windows. Autoglym’s All Season Quick Clear Screenwash, correctly diluted for the temperature, will ensure a clear, smear-free windscreen. The company’s Fast Glass can also be used to help maintain good visibility, as part of a regular car-care regime. Autoglym’s Winter Car Care DO’S and DON’TS * DO dislodge mud and salt that can collect under wheel arches * DO protect your car by using a premium-grade polish or wax, such as Autoglym Super Resin Polish or High Definition Wax * DO clean your car periodically during the winter months to prevent a build-up of dirt * DO carry a full strength de-icer to clear ice from windscreen, mirrors, wipers and locks * DO increase the concentration of your car’s screenwash to prevent the solution from freezing as temperatures drop * DON’T use washing up liquid or poorquality car wash fluids to wash your car,

RROSIVE EFFECTS OF ROAD SALT

as it can remove protective coatings * DON’T use boiling water to clear ice from your windscreen as it can crack the glass * DON’T drive until your front and rear screen and side windows are clear of ice – it is illegal to drive with poor visibility
