THIS MONTHS NEWS... Free track and road magazine

THE NEW JAGUAR XF DIESEL S When it was introduced last year, the XF was recognised as a dramatic expression of a bold new Jaguar design language. It also soon became apparent that here was a car where the driving experience exceeded the expectations created by the striking appearance. Now, the new XF Diesel S takes this driving experience to new levels, shifting the balance even further towards dynamic performance while still retaining the XF’s core values as a refined and luxurious sports saloon.

Distinguished by 19 inch wheels, an aerodynamic boot lid spoiler and discreet ‘S’ badging, the car that defines Jaguar sporting luxury is even better for the 2010 model year, with a stunning new high-performance diesel. Powered by a 275PS engine, the Diesel S gives the XF outstanding levels of performance, accelerating from 0-60mph in just 5.9 seconds, 1.8 seconds quicker than the excellent 2.7-litre model. In-gear acceleration is equally impressive, with a 50-70mph time of just 3.2 seconds. Maximum speed is electronically limited to 155mph.

Featuring parallel sequential turbochargers to help deliver the high levels of power and torque seamlessly and with effortless flexibility, this engine is perfectly matched to Jaguar’s sophisticated six-speed ZF 6HP28 automatic transmission. There is an equally impressive 240PS version of the new 3.0-litre engine available too, which produces 16 percent more power and a 15 percent increase in torque over the 2.7-litre diesel, allowing the XF to reach 60mph in 6.7 seconds.

SUBARU: THE PERFECT CHOICE OF WINTER WARRIOR

AUDI IS “LIGHT” YEARS AHEAD WITH WORLD’S FIRST LED HEADLIGHTS

With the UK in the grip of another classically dark, wet, icy and grim winter and the roads in a slippery state of perpetual mud, leaves, frost and black ice, there’s never been a better time to make full use of Subaru’s legendary symmetrical AllWheel Drive transmission – the perfect antidote to the woeful winter weather.

The order book opened in Britain for the V10 engined Audi R8 this month (1 January) and with it the German car manufacturer demonstrated another element of its pioneering Vorsprung durch Technik technology.

Subaru’s quick-thinking, full-time AWD transmission splits power 50:50 front to rear; enhancing straight-line traction (even with up to 330bhp/346lbft on tap, as in the exciting new Impreza 330S) and providing sure-footed grip and traction through corners, whatever the weather; allowing the driver to make safe, swift progress, day in, day out. On a typically slippery British Winter road, grip is at a premium. But Subaru’s “Subaglue” permanent All-Wheel Drive – with state-of-the-art Vehicle Dynamics Control, intelligent AWD differentials and super-grippy chassis and set-up – will find you traction, where a 2WD car would be slipping and sliding, leaving the driver in a panic, or worse. As a Subaru driver, even in hard rain, snow or icy conditions, all you will be aware of while you make steady progress, is less understeer or oversteer, as the tried-and-tested, highly evolved symmetrical AWD does its job reassuringly.

The range-topping R8 is the first car in the world to be equipped with all-LED (light emitting diode) headlamps. For the first time the high intensity diodes have been used for low beam and high beam settings, as well as for daytime running lights and indicators, intensifying the sports car’s visual drama. The LED headlamp of the Audi R8 is the first representative of a completely new generation of headlamps using only light emitting diodes which in itself reduces CO2 emissions. An interior light package including LED footwell lighting, light and rain sensors and LED engine compartment lighting also comes as standard on the 196mph “supercar”. . Audi was the first car manufacturer to recognize the potential of revolutionary LED lighting technology and then incorporate it during development of its vehicles and can now boast a technological edge putting it “light” years ahead of the competition.

BLACK IS THE NEW WHITE FOR THE AUDI A3

Black Edition specification further enhances sought-after three-door, five-door Sportback and Cabriolet ranges New Audi A3 Black Edition models emerge from the shadows this month to join the popular three-door, five-door Sportback and Cabriolet ranges. Combining dark and brooding looks with an exceptional specification that takes the top S line model as its basis, the new limited run A3 range can be ordered now priced from £22,215 OTR to £27,395 OTR, and will reach the UK in early February. To set the tone, Black Edition models feature a de-chromed front grille and, in the Cabriolet versions, black surrounds for the roll bars and the shoulder line. 18-inch S line design alloy wheels with an exclusive dark titanium finish continue the theme in all three variants, and in the hatchbacks privacy glass

extends from the B-pillar. For the full effect, these features are combined with Brilliant Black paint at no extra cost, but the fashionable no-cost option of Ibis White and the extra cost metallic options Phantom Black, Misano Red and Monza Silver are also available. They may keep a lower profile in some respects, but the A3 Black Editions also make their presence very much felt in others, thanks not only to their sporting S line body styling treatments but also to their standard fit Xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lamps. Black interiors too Inside, the Black Editions are marked out by high gloss Piano black inlays, and the already extensive S line specification is enhanced by a high output Bose speaker system, acoustic rear parking sensors and an exclusive flat-bottomed multi-function

steering wheel. The S line package also offers sports suspension, part leather-upholstered sports seats, electronic climate control and an Audi Concert audio system with single CD player and MP3 compatibility. In Cabriolet Black Edition models, available exclusively with a black acoustic hood, it also includes fully automatic hood operation and a wind deflector. The new Black Edition specification is available in conjunction with the 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre TFSI petrol engines (160PS and 200PS) and the two advanced 2.0 TDI common rail engines (140PS and 170PS). It carries a premium of £905 over the equivalent S line model in each case which, when the additional equipment it offers is taken into account, represents a customer saving of £675 on the A3 Black Edition and £650 on the A3 Cabriolet Black Edition.

SOUTH YORKSHIRE POLICE HUNT IN PACKS WITH THEIR LANCER EVOLUTION TRILOGY

Evo X Has Excellent Pursuit Capabilities The new Police specification Evolution X has arrived with South Yorkshire Police to the great delight of its drivers, and the chagrin of local villains. The new car will be used alongside the ever present Evolution VIII and IX in the Road Crime Unit where proactive road policing is the mission and officers will be driving the new car in cases involving drug dealers and car thieves. “The Evo X was the car of choice because of its excellent pursuit capabilities and the fact that so much time and effort has been put into maximising performance whilst minimising the risk of accidents” Inspector Slack explained. The Hunted Will Give Up The new member of the team will be used on the same missions and at the same time as its previous-generation siblings, creating such a strong visual impact that the vehicle being pursued will often simply give up the chase and pull over, knowing they won’t be able to out-run the RCU. What is more, the Police Evolutions ‘hunt’ in packs of three, which, Inspector Slack explained is often enough of a deterrent that high-speed chases are avoided. Evo X Has The Latest Software and Hardware Not only will the new Evolution X be one of the most ca-

14 TARMAG

pable performing cars, it will also be fitted with the latest Police hardware and software combinations. The onboard Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system allows officers to check who the vehicle is registered to and if there is anything remotely suspicious about the vehicle. Its discreet but practical, but on the other hand it will go when you want it to! This is one of these cars you could drive to work, the shops, and up to your local racing circuit for a day and drive home. Interior build quality as per usual on Mitsubishi’s is fantastic, to us its value for money. Respect plays a part in our decision too, people say “ooh look! There’s the new Evo-10” But when you consider the Police are now using them, it really shows you they know what they are capable of. The Police tend to use cars that are reliable, long lasting, fast, and able of capturing the criminals. The Evo-X is a great choice, considering we have had one we know what they are capable of. What we are looking forward to is the new Subaru Impreza WRX STI which will be coming to us in March, is it better? Is it rubbish? Well only one way to find out, we plan on doing a joint review, so what would you like us to compare it to? Email us compare@tarmag. co.uk

The Peugeot 4007, well first when I got in it, I was rather confused. Is this a Mitsubishi Outlander, well it is but it’s not! It seems some manufacturers have teamed up to use the same parts/design/looks, etc which is fine. This

Equipment levels are great including 7 seats as standard. The other thing that stands out on this car is the distinctive exterior styl-

ing is unmistakably Peugeot. It’s a hard choice if i had the money to buy one of these cars, i.e. either the Mitsubishi or the Peugeot as they are the same car, but styled slightly differently.

So who would buy one of these cars, the 4007 sits in a threegroup sector of premium, volume and small 4x4 SUVs and will competes’ in the volume sector with the Honda CRV, Freelander 2, Toyota RAV 4 and Hyundai Sante Fe,

amongst others. Safety, high driving position, good legroom and comfort, with distinctive styling and a versatile interior make the Peugeot 4007 a great buy!

Thomas Lamont w w w. t h o m a s l a m o n t p h o t o g r a p hy. c o. u k .

When did you get into photography? I’ve been interested in Photography for the last year or so. I would say I was encouraged by my family, my girlfriend and my best mate. Believe it or not, I started out using my Nokia N95 Camera phone! I quickly upgraded to a FujiPix S5800 and just recently I bought my first Digital SLR Camera.

How did you know you wanted to be a professional photographer? I had never planned to become a Photographer when I was younger. I’ve really only worked in I.T since leaving school, firstly working for the Scottish Prison Service and now the NHS. I’m studying a computing course at the moment, but I’m now seriously considering studying photography at college and then going onto start my own business. I would

say I’m currently a freelance photographer, I take photographs for the local car clubs (‘Falkirk Cruise’, ‘Road and Track Scotland’ and ‘UK Corsa D Sports Club’) and I also do photo shoots for the members. It is practice for myself and it also gives members good photographs of their cars!

What made you choose automotive photography compared to landscapes or weddings? Well I don’t really label myself as an Automotive Photographer, but I do like taking snaps of Automobiles. There are some really nice cars out there! I still undertake a lot of Landscape and Night Time photography. Landscape and Automotive Photography can go hand in hand, you can get some amazing photographs if you have the right car in the right location. I like to try and get the photograph to tell a story about the subject.

Is there anyone you look up to for inspiration for your photography? I would say the Talk Photography community, everyone is very helpful on the forums. They help you to understand photography better and offer advice to help you improve. I would also say that my best mate, Sean(esfphotography. co.uk) as he was the one who I learned most of my skills from. Has anyone helped you on your way? As said previously, my mate Sean has helped me a lot. The internet is also a great source for finding out more 44 TARMAG

information on photography. What is the oddest car you have photographed? Probably the 1970 Ford I would not say I’ve photographed an odd car, I have however photographed a Land Rover and we did manage to get it stuck! What cars have you photographed? I’ve only photographed a small number of cars, but this is increasing quickly due to a high demand for photo shoots in my local car clubs. I’ll also be photographing my sister’s new Audi TT

shortly. What car would you love to photograph? I would love to photograph a Ford Mustang, Dodge Viper or Austin Martin DB9, but it’s finding one that’s the hard part! Do you know anyone that would let me? =) Where can people see your work? I have a Photography website; http://www. trl-photography.co.uk or http://www.thomaslamontphotography. co.uk. You can also contact me there if you wish for a photo shoot.

Having a 300 bhp Honda Jazz as your track car, is all well and good, but you need something slightly more practical for everyday use. That’s the conclusion that Rob Barber from Dublin, Ireland came to. But as the owner of ICETronix, Ireland’s premier Honda tuner, it had to be something a bit special, and he’s got his dad to thank for what’s now his daily driver. “About 2 year ago we imported one of the first Euro-R Accords into the country for my dad, when they were really rare,” explained Rob. “Of course I drove it and it was great; it was reasonably quick,

comfortable and looked absolutely gorgeous in the Arctic Blue. It caused a lot of attention wherever it went. “ So he decided to get one for himself. But surely that was quite a change from his normal hot hatches he’d been used to? “Yes it was,” he admits. “But of course it still comes with the K20 engine, which I love - perhaps it’s a sign of growing up!” Rob’s blue ‘04 Accord arrived from Japan at the start of 2008 and cost around ¤25,000 Euros. “It came already fitted with some of the genuine Mugen bodykit,” said Rob. “It

have been and you had to rev it to the limit in every gear.” Rob’s solution ? Modify the gearbox/ratio/gears by fitting a 5.1 final drive from a new Civic Type R, combined with a 6th gear from a UK-spec Ac“ It comes as standard cord Type S. “The result with 17s, but we put on was a car with much betbigger wheels to improve the looks,” revealed Rob. ter acceleration than the standard Euro-R Accord,” “We ran a 225/45 x 18 confirmed a satisfied tyre and with that size Rob. “And it had a lovely there was still a good long 6th gear for cruising amount of comfort with on the motorway. I can it so it was lovely for evdo 150 kph at just 4000 eryday use as it soaked rpm and I’m still getting up the bumps - even on the back roads. But it did about 600 kms to a tank, although I’m not really make the gears slightly sure how big the tank is.” longer and I wasn’t reI checked up on the spec ally happy with that - it wasn’t as sharp as it could and it’s fitted with a 65 also had the Tein coilovers which are fantastic and very comfortable.” But of course he’s made a few improvements - it’s always possible to make a good thing even better.

litre fuel tank and to be honest with prices in Ireland hitting over ¤1.30 Euros a litre - nothing is really that economical these days! Along with making the car faster, with some cams, an exhaust and a re-map, he’s also improved its stopping potential. “I got Brembo callipers from a DC5 Integra and machined the brackets to make them fit, and I’ve kept the standard Accord discs,” said Rob. Inside the Accord, there’s really little scope for improving the supportive and comfortable Recaros, although Rob has upgraded the standard entertainment. “The original factory stereo is all built into the dashboard and is extremely difficult to change,” remarked Rob. “I tracked down a company in

the USA who sold a replacment panel to allow me to fit a nonstandard headunit, and after a few wiring mods we got it working. It’s an old unit that I had fitted in my NSX (yes he’s owned one of those supercars as well) and it’s got a vehicle dynamics processor which uses GSM technology to tell me exact readings for things like speed, acceleration and even G-Force.” For the past 6 months Rob has been using the car everyday, but hasn’t managed to resist the temptation of taking the car onto the track at Mondello Park, despite the risks involved. How did it cope with the circuit ? “It was Ok,” he replies. “But the suspension is too soft for

the track, as there was qu The chassis s and I could f turn into cor pension just the weight s problems wit gine or the b Rob says the remain in th time to com maybe I coul engine work, at the mome mix; it’ look reasonably e to that new you want to enough, and even on the of course it c comfortable could you wa

Perhaps. “Well ld do a bit more ,” he admits. “But ent it’s a very good ks fantastic, it’s economic - thanks 6th gear, and when it certainly quick d it handles well, back roads.” And carries at least 4 in e luxury.
