It’s crazy to think that 12 months ago we launched our premier issue of TarMag. Going back through the previous issues, you can see allot of effort goes into each issue, with more advanced page layouts and better features than ever before. To mark our magazine a Year Old, we are celebrating at Crail Race-way on Sunday 20th September 2009 to host the Ultimate Scottish Street Car Show for 2009. Allot has been going on at TarMag for the past 12 months, and our future plans will make your experience of reading TarMag even better. With a focus on newly Manufactured cars and more reader focused articles, its definitely worth keeping TarMag in your bookmarks for the time being.

T S 1 Y A D H BIRT ISSUE

Frankfurt, 15 September 2009 – The Ferrari 458 Italia, that debuts today at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show, is an 8-cylinder two-seater berlinetta with a mid-rear mounted engine, and represents a genuine break with the past in terms of Maranello’s previous high-performance sports cars. Designed to fulfil the expectations and ambitions of our most passionate clients, the 458 Italia continues the Ferrari tradition of putting the thrill into driving as a result of track-derived technological innovations. Thanks to a new 4,499 cc V8 engine, which punches out 570 CV, the F1 dual-clutch gearbox and a 1,380 kg dry weight, the 458 Italia boasts an extraordinary weightpower ratio of 2.42 kg (a power-weight ratio of 413 CV per ton). This means it sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in under 3.4 seconds and hits a maximum speed of over 325 km/h. We hope to have more details on the car as they become available.

Caterham R500 immortalised – in LEGO

The Caterham Superlight R500 won accolades across the board in 2008, including the prestigious Top Gear Car of the Year. But you know you’ve really made it when you’re built in LEGO. LEGOLAND designers were so impressed by the R500’s achievement in winning the BBC’s top motoring decoration last year that it decided to capture the moment in its famous coloured plastic bricks. Taking their place within the 40 million-brick MINILAND, one of a number of attractions at LEGOLAND, Top Gear presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, plus the elusive Stig, can be seen huddled around the famous Caterham Seven 8

in a motorsport-themed area.

LEGOLAND’S chief model maker, Guy Bagley, said: “My colleague remembered that the Stig had put the R500 through its paces and how incredible it was on the track. It’s such a timeless and iconic car that it was a ‘no-brainer’ as our choice for the motorsport area, having already decided to feature Top Gear. Its design lends itself particularly well to our bricks, too.” To see the attraction, among many others, avoid the queues by booking tickets in advance at www.legoland. co.uk. 12 Feature : The first ever Ajec Performance Car Action Day hit Castle Combe in September and it did exactly what it said on the packet. Unlike so many car show this show offers the oppor tunity for owners to put their car to the ultimate test by thrashing it around one of the fastest race circuits in the UK, and the non-stop track sessions were bursting at the seams. Almost 100 car club had stands for their members at the show ranging from the Alfa Romeo Enthusiasts to the Z Club, and everything inbetween. Ajec Racing(www.ajecracing. co.uk) put on a very impressive display of their race and customer cars which added up to several millions pounds worth of four-wheeled eye candy.

That display included numerous racing Evos, all in ‘stealth’ black, a rare Ford RS200, Ferrari F40, 12 TARMAG

FEATURE : MINI Coupe Concept

The first classic Mini was presented to the public on 26 August 1959. Exactly fifty years on and nearly a decade into the life of new MINI, images of the stunning new MINI Coupe Concept are today released. Capturing the essence of MINI’s sporting appeal, the global press and public will see the MINI Coupe Concept in the metal for the first time when it is unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show from 17-27 September 2009.

of a genuine sports car.

The MINI Coupe Concept is designed to be the most dynamic and agile MINI ever built. Strictly a two-seater, the low roof line, compact dimensions, perfect axle load distribution and lightweight construction are all trademarks

The muscular stance of the car is a result of carefully calculated exterior dimensions. The MINI Coupe Concept is 1,356mm high and the steep rake of the A-pillars is accentuated by the high waistline common to every MINI.

We hope this goes into production

24 TARMAG

A number of design icons feature on the MINI Coupe Concept. Large round headlights inclusive of black internal reflectors, a hexagonal radiator grille and low front spoiler mark the newcomer out as a true MINI. Unique exterior design cues include a bespoke rear spoiler, bonnet stripes extending to include the radiator grille and an entirely revised front air dam.

Sat on attractive 18 triple-tone finish light alloy wheels, the concept is 3,714mm in length and 1,683mm wide. For the first time on a MINI, the weight-saving aluminium roof is an unbroken bridge shape and flows smoothly from A to C-pillars. The steep front rake stops above the heads of driver and front passenger and descends gently to the rear of the car, emphasising the wedge shape of the car and its sporty poise. The low rear end of the car ensures optimum air flow across the vehicle when in motion and in combination with the roof spoiler, minimises any aerodynamic interruption.

nside, sports seats with strongly contoured side supports feature, as does a three-spoke leather sports steering wheel with multi-function controls. Two Chronoswiss clocks to the right and left of the rev counter provide a close link to earlier concept cars by MINI, bridging the gap between the analogue age of the classic Mini and the digital age of new MINI. One acts as a stop watch and the other a standard timepiece. A luggage capacity of 250 litres is offered and can be accessed at the rear by a tailgate which is hinged above the roof spoiler, meaning easy access to goods stowed in the rear. The bulkhead between the passenger and

25

bulkhead between the passenger and luggage compar tments comes with a lockable opening, giving passenger s access to the rear section at any time. The MINI Co upe Concept is engineered to receive the most power ful engine in the current MINI line-up. The highly -acclaimed 211hp, 1.6-litre twin scroll turbocharged power unit found in current John Cooper Works models of fer s CO2 emissions of just 165g/km and fuel 26 TARMAG

ef f iciency of 40.9mpg (combined). MINI’s revered handling dy namics will be a highlight of the MINI Coupe Concept. Front wheel drive, power ful disc brakes on all four wheels, the front axle wi th McPher son spring struts and a centrally guided rear axle with alumi nium longitudinal arms and anti-roll bar s guarantee a safe, yet grininducing drive ever y time.

With a Crossover model in the f inal stages of development and Hatch, Clubman and Conver tible models currently on the roads in nearly 80 countries world wide, MINI aims to of fer a varied and exciting range of small premium car s to customer s in the coming year s. MINIMALISM technologies including Brake Energy Regeneration, Shif t Point Display and Auto Star t/Stop are key reasons to buy a MINI and have helped to position MINI at the forefront of highly ef f icient

and environmentally aware performance car production. T hese technologies are sure to feature on future MINI derivatives. The MINI Coupe Concept takes traditional values of the MINI brand and combines them with the most advanced technologies to of fer an exciting vision of the how MINI family may continue to grow. We hope to see this car on our roads sooner rather than later. 27

MG TF LE500 1.8 16V Our MG TF LE500 keeps performing again and again, we underestimated recently what it can do until you take one properly around a race track, we took MG’s prototype we drove a few months back for a final spin around Knockhill Racing circuit, and boy can it shift, it wasn’t as fast some of the cars, but we were having the most fun that’s for sure. Driving the TF LE500 home afterwards shows you how much development has going into the 34 TARMAG

new car. We hope to exchange ours soon for the newer model as its just a beauty to drive. Well this month we have been travelling around in the MG to events and shows with the car being on display a few times and commented upon many a time. People seem to start often at the Number pate on the car since it’s an “08” registration. Many people think MG don’t exist and that’s its just

the old car, but be sure people MG do exist and they are going to be back bigger and better than before with loads of development on the latest 85th anniversary addition, if they keep up the good work, they are sure going to be onto a winner. Check out next month for a comparison between the LE500 and the latest 85th edition.

40 FEATURE : Monster Energy Truck Monster Energy the biggest baddest energy drink on the planet has landed in the U.K. and look what they brought with them!! A 2008 Chevy Silverado import with a whopping 6.6 litter turbo charged V8. This truck has been customised by the guys down at Euro American, for those of you who don’t know, these are the guys that do all of the mental customisations for Pimp My Ride U.K. So what did they do to this truck?

Its Monster Time...

40 TARMAG

Firstly there’s the 6inch lift kit making the truck well over 6ft tall causing the truck to make dwarfs out of land rovers, Mitsubishi warriors, and some transit vans! Next is massive cooler boxes in the bed of the truck. Yes this truck has a massive fridge in the back capable of holding 880 cans of ice cold Monster energy be it the Original, Low carb, or my Favourite the Ripper. If you see the

truck on the road wave the girls down they will love to give you a can. Thirdly they fitted a full kicker sound system inside and outside the truck which is regularly used at street parties, cruises, and the odd metal festival. The interior set up consists of 2x 12inch subs inc amp boxed in under the rear seats mid ranged speakers and tweeters in all of the usual places inc the suicide doors but the real fun in the the ex-

terior set up. Mounted under the foot rails are 4x aqua mid ranged speakers on each side and 2x 12 inch subs mounted behind the rear window another amp has been boxed up inside the fridges to power this lot. The result is an awesome looking beast of a truck bringing the tunes and the Monster to any given party. Check out more Monster Info next month....

46 Feature : Road Safety Road Shows

Scottish Borders Road Safety Shows 2009 Back in 2007 the Scottish Borders Road Safety Working Group organised some events which went down well. Well for 2009 they are back at it again with the Open Air Road Shows which so far have hit Hawick, Duns and most recently Peebles. We had the pre-conception that the event was an opportunity for the Local authorities to crack down on the “Boy Racers” but we stand corrected. The events are designed to educate drivers on 46 TARMAG

road safety. The Police bring a Modded Vaxhall which is rather illegal and you get to spot illegal modifications. The Police also make you aware of the legal ways to modify your car without getting into trouble or making your car have a big “ PULL ME OVER “ feel to it. The Fire Service brought along a rather crashed Mini Copper and discuss their role

in road traffic accidents. The Road Safety Department talk about drink and drugs and what affects these have. There is an opportunity to wear some beer goggles which our assistant editor did, and well he failed the ball throwing game miserably. And finally the Scottish Borders council then chat about Road engineering issues that they face and how they help us with their job.

Its a great show to attend, the next one takes place on Friday 23rd October 2009 in Galashiels in the Tescos under cover car park so you won’t have to worry about getting wet. We are aiming for a huge turn out for this event, so make sure you pencil it in your diary. For more details email : prichardson@scotborders.gov.uk

Falkirk Cruise

58

Its the first Thursday of the month = Falkirk Cruise Time... 3rd September 2009, Location : Falkirk Cruise We decided to come back to our routes, just over a year ago we now started, and one of the first events we attended was Falkirk Cruise, we didn’t know what all the hype was about until we actually attended the event. It happens on the first Thursday of each month without fail and is always in the same 58 TARMAG

place, the Retail Park. You should arrive early to get a good space. It’s strange to think a year ago we were just starting off. Falkirk cruise has been featured a few times before by us, we love going there, the people are kind and some of the cars are just immense. Since it was our birthday celebrations we decided to add some prizes for Car of the Night,

Show n Shine and Hottie of the night. Thanks to Monster energy for donating some BFC’s as prizes, Ahshan’s BMW picked up another top prize “ Car of the Nigh “, the White Lexus which looks similar won “Show n Shine” and also The girls who won Hotties of the Night prizes, well done everyone. And Monster Energy were on hand to give our some samples and

stickers, thanks guys for making it! We hope to be back at Falkirk Cruise in the near future, always a great place to be no matter what time of the year. For more details on Falkirk Cruise or the cruises themselves, check out www.falkirkcruise.net for more details, they have a forum too, so don’t be shy to register and ask questions, they don’t byte.
