Welcome Red Angus Enthusiast! Thank you for showing interest in our operation and the Red Angus breed. The enthusiasim for this great breed of cattle is higher than ever! More feeders are wanting Red Angus influenced calves, more cow/ calf operators are appreciating the attributes of a Red Angus cow and more juniors are wanting to show a Red Angus heifer. It is a great time to be in the cattle business and an even better time to trade out those older models for some younger females. We are very proud and greatful for the families who have purchased SLGN cattle in the past and are having such huge success with them. I don’t think many people can say they have ever seen a Red Angus female being named the Supreme Champion Female at a State Fair, let alone having two other Red Angus females win Supreme titles at two different state fairs in one year. Congratulations to Cody Kluser of Oregon and Garry Taylor of Kentucky for all your hard work and effort paying off. Almost half of the SLGN heifers that sold in last year’s sale, were named Champion Red Angus Female in nine states this year. However, watching the heifers go into production as cows and return their investment is a goal we have for all of our customers. The North American Junior Red Angus Event (NAJRAE) had its 9th Anniversary in Grand Island, NE and had 165 juniors that came from 20 states. We had almost every border covered from Idaho to Pennsylvania and North Dakota to Texas. The week was filled with individual and group competitions, shows and lots of memories being made. This year at the American Red Angus Association’s National Convention in Savannah, Georgie, we received the John V. Robbins Service Award for our family starting the great even. NAJRAE has recognized huge successes with bringing new breeders into the Red Angus breed and reigniting a passion between grandparents, parents, children, (families) for the Red Angus. We could not have had such great success without the help and support of so many families who volunteer their time to help with this great event including donors and sponsors. Thank you everyone. What a difference a year makes. We lost our partner, husband and father a week after our female sale last year. Three weeks later we welcomed a new partner, son and grandson into the world. Daniel Tanner Johnson has been our shining star and ball of joy over the last year. I was reminded just a few days ago, from a dear family friend that Dad always told him, “I work and live with two of the toughest women I know. And if anybody can get it done, it would be his two girls.” Mom and I have learned alot about each other and ourselves. We are going to continue on this path of producing high quality Red Angus cattle that are phenotypically correct and high performing. We have had alot of help and support this past year. It’s been tough, and we can’t imagine not having had your support. The list is too long to thank but you know who you are, Thank You. We look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones October 4th in Cushing, IA. Cattle will be available for viewing all day. Come early, enjoy the afternoon and don’t miss out on supper and refreshments at 5. If you can’t make the sale you can join us online at DVAuction.com or bid on the phone with one of our sale reps. We stand behind what we sell and want your purchase to work for you. Let us know how we can help. See you on the 4th, Cheryl & Cassie

What does it take to make a great female? I don’t know why but to this day I can still remember the BUF CRK CHR 824-1658 Performance trip my parents and I took to Menomonie, WI, to BFCK CHEROKEE CNYN 4912 BW look at some Red Angus heifers we were hoping to MRM 1431 8611 9109 79 buy. When we got there I was instantly drawn to WW BJR MONU 4X-303 a sharp fronted, heavy muscled fancy heifer that I 747 DFRA AL THEA 107 just had to have. Her name later became Peek-A BJR AL THEA 27C-245 Boo. While there, Dad noticed another heifer calf that was a little smaller but just as big bellied and thick as Peek-A-Boo. He decided he just had to have 5 -3.4 56 91 22 50 her. Her name later became Persuasion. We started showing these two heifers along with another two -0.01 6 10 -8 0.76 0.43 Dad and I had purchased earlier. They were PreciPROGENY AVERAGES sion and Passion. Well Precision and Peek-A-Boo BW WW YW %IMF REA FAT MPPA 74 666 1062 4.75 14.06 0,23 102.0 were very unique and just had a little more look and style needed for the show ring so we decided to leave Persuasion and Passion home after a couple of shows. However, that was not the end of the story for Persuasion. Since her day of retirement from the show ring, she has been busy producing females and bulls that have caught the attention of people from across the world. Persuasion has the ability to produce feminine, fancy heifer calves that turn into brood cows and even donors. She can also produce heavy muscled, rugged, low maintenance bulls that are desirable for the commercial person and the purebred person looking for the next great AI bull. She does produce the best of both worlds and still keeps their EPDs and actual data in the top percent of the breed. It is hard to write a footnote on a female like this when there are so many things I want to say but just can’t make it all fit. They always say that pictures speak louder than words and I believe that is true with this featured lot. We will be selling 50% interest and posession in this female with the option to buy her all.

The

Yardmaster Family

This is the second year for Yardmaster progeny to sell. We can’t say enough good about him. He will be on display at our sale so be sure to come and take a look! Lot 2 has stuck out of the crowd since the day she was weaned. She is a very stout made female that still combines power with eye appeal. You can tell in the picture she has the look of a female that will catch a judges eye, however, when you see her from behind you will realize how much brood cow potential this female has.

This March heifer has always been one to catch your eye out in the pasture. She always presents herself with a bit of a “hey look at me” attitude. I really like how good she is in her skeletal design and how she ties her neck into the top of her shoulder allowing her to extend that front third. Her dam is a young donor that is already produced some great ones. Her first natural bull calf sold in our bull sale this Spring for $6500. This heifer is her second natural. I think that speaks volumes for what this female has in store as a cow. Lot 3 is stacked with maternal traits, take her home and let her work for you.

Lot 5 is a one of the more unique females in the sale. She is the natural calf out of one of United, one of our up and coming donors. Lot 5 is a maternal sister to SLGN X-clusive 0300X. 0300X is currently a donor in our program that we are very excited about. If you are looking for a female that is extremely good in her skeleton this may be the one for you. She is big boned, uniform in her body depth from fore rib to flank and long hipped. Lot 5 will work for you in the ring but more importantly in the pasture as a brood cow.

If we weren’t short on heifer numbers this year I guarantee you this heifer would not be on the sale. The Blockanna 807 cow family is a proven pedigree that will produce high quality females that combine the phenotype we desire with the performance we need. 807 was the first Triple Crown Female in the Red Angus breed winning Louisville, Denver & Fort Worth. Blockana 807 is no longer with us so this will be the last female of hers we will ever sell. Like the Dam to Lot 5 other Yardmaster daughters this female is built right from the ground up. She stands on a solid base has plenty of muscle shape and when you analyze her from the side, you will appreciate how much cow potential this female has. We are retaining 1/2 embryo interest.

Cowboy Cut progeny have been making their mark in and out of the pasture. This year Cowboy Cut sired the Grand Champion Futurity Heifer at the North American Junior Red Angus Event, the Supreme Champion Female at the Kentucky State Fair Junior Show and the Supreme Champion Female at the Oregon State Fair. His first calf crop hit the ground in 2011 and produced the highly talked about AI sire, SLGN Yardmaster 125Y. You can’t go wrong by having a Cowboy Cut daughter in your herd. The high selling bull in our 2014 Cattlemans Bull sale was out of X-Files and a first calf heifer sired by Cowboy Cut. If you want maternal power then look to these Cowboy Cut daughters.

this cow was too good a female from a phenotypic standpoint to not use her. Not often do I admit it, but he was right. Bela is a standout in the pasture and her daughters will be as well. Lot 8 is a more moderate framed female. She is Bela’s natural calf this year and boy, Bela put the pounds into this female. She is a heavy muscled powerfully constructed female that still maintains a smooth look through her front third. Lot 9 offers more length and extension in her skeleton giving her a more feminine look. This heifer will walk in the ring and stand out because of her combination of power and femininity.

Lot 11 is made similar to lot 10 from a thickness and brood cow potential standpoint. You can take these sisters home put them in the replacement pen or put them in the show barn because they are capable of doing both. These heifers are the type and kind you can breed to X-Files for a first calf and I believe it will be very easy to market no matter the sex. Red Legends 12

Are you looking for a heifer to compete in the younger divisions? Take a look at lots 12 & 13. I think you might find just what you are looking for. Lot 12 is a unique breeding piece going back to Cowboy Cut and Rock Star. Her dam sold in our 2011 Red Legends sale and we retained 50% interest. We have high hopes for her dam and I think this heifer is made a lot like her mom. I really appreciate her skeletal design, how she handles herself on the move and the amount of volume she carries. Don’t forget to take a look at her EPD profile. 1.1 to 111 on growth and 0.41 Marb and 0.39 REA. This female has the total package.

Here is an extremely fancy May heifer calf. Her dark red hair coat is eye catching enough but when you combine that with her length of spine and that long choke necked front end, you really start to turn heads. Females like this one are what created the word feminine. She presents herself in such a well balanced package it’s hard to not get excited about this one. Red Legends 13

The

YOSEMITE Family Lot 14 has cow written all over her and she does rightfully so. She comes from a long line of maternal powerhouse females. Her dam has produced some tremendous females for use over the years. She is worth her weight in gold. Look further back on her bottom side you’ll see she goes back to the famous Copprqueen cow family that is known most for producing great AI sires. If you are looking for a heifer that your junior can show, but more importantly one that will be another great momma cow. This is one you will want to look at.

This late April female may be green but she still has a lot of potential. Lot 15 is feminine fronted, level down her top and out of her hip. This is only the second calf crop from Yosemite. I like what I see in them. The females are feminine and have great muscle shape down their top and out of their hip. This year I asked our dear friend Bruce Westhuis if he would like to put some heifers on our sale and one thing about Bruce, he never disappoints you. Lot 16 is a standout female that has the potential to be an elite donor cow for someone down the road. She looks just like her picture but is even more impressive when you get behind her. She is so stout out of her hip and down through her lower quarter. Her dam is a maternal sister to Feddes Blockana 807, the dam to lot 4. Her sire SLGN X-Files 006X was being used as a heifer bull extraordinair but over the years we Dam to Lot 18 are finding he is more than just a heifer bull. He not only produces some powerful sons but his daughters are the ones that really take the spotlight. Come to the sale and take a close look at this female. I don’t think you could ask for another heifer to be so uniform in her body depth from front to back like Lot 17. Belladona has cow written all over her. She has smooth shoulder, bold in her fore rib and very good in her lines. Take a good look at this March heifer on sale day because I am guessing that between now and then she will change even more than she already has. She won’t even look like the heifer pictured. This moderate framed heifer is long patterned and high volumed. The more time you give her to grow the more excited you will get about her. Lot 18 has a ton of potential in the show ring and just the same in the pasture. The dam is a tremendous first calf heifer that has a gorgeous udder and plenty of milk. ries a ton of muscle shape down her top and out of her hip. Lot 21 takes more after her sire and is a moderate framed easy keeping female with a ton of body and muscle. Feed prices are getting lower but if you want one that will keep you money in your pocket instead of her feed pan, this heifer will work for you. The Rock Star bull has been used in Argentina a lot and when the Argentine Genex Beef tour came through this summer the Argentines favor the Rock Star daughters because of their near perfect udders and how well they wean calves off. Buy these two with confidence, they will be great cows down the road.

The

PEEK-A-BOO Family

Here they are! The last three direct daughters to Peek-A-Boo we will ever offer in our sale. Over the last eight years, we have put a Peek-A-Boo daughter in seven of our sales. They have been one of the highlights and sale toppers every time. Peek-A-Boo daughters have won titles in many show rings across the country: Grand Champion Female at the National Red Angus Show, National Western Stock Show, Fort Worth Stock Show, Iowa State Fair, Texas State Fair, Georgia National and many more. Even more impressive is how they perform once they are out of the ring and in the pasture. Peek-A-Boo daughters are getting the job done by producing outstanding progeny that are high growth, eye appealing and we can’t forget, gentle. Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

We are very excited about the potential Lot 22 has. She is the first dark cherry red female we have ever had out of Peek-A-Boo, boy is she sharp. The extension and femininity she has in her front-third, her ability to carry the length down her top and out her hip, is what I really appreciate. She has volume through her middle, and when she sets into motion, fills her track. Lot 22 will catch the eye of any judge as soon as she walks into the ring. I believe she will really shine in the ring as a bred heifer. Keep in mind this female is a flush mate sister to the 2012 NAILE Res Grand Champion Female, 2013 JRA National Grand Champion Female & 2013 Fort Worth Stock Show Grand Champion Female. We are retaining 1/2 embryo interest.

Lot 24 may be the sleeper of the three heifers. She is a little green in her condition but don’t knock her for that. She is extremely deep sided, high volumed and stout from behind. What I really appreciate about her is the extension she has through her front third. She carries the Peek-A-Boo genetics well. Her sire, Cutting Edge, has an outcross pedigree with Black Angus genetics on the top side which should add to her value even more. This female has tremendous potential as an elite breeding piece down the road. We are retaining 1/2 embryo interest.

Lot 23 has already gotten a title under her belt. She was the Div 1 Champion at the Iowa State Fair. The only Yardmaster x Peek-ABoo female we have had, but if they all look like her-- I will be one happy cattle woman. She is sharp looking, deep and soggy middle, thick and stands on a solid square base. This female has it all! Yardmaster progeny have really excelled in all aspects. The bulls are stout high performing. The females are feminine, easy keeping and eye appealing. Keep your eye on this one! She will do big things in the future. We are retaining 1/2 embryo interest.

Windsong is a very long spined female that carries that extension up through her front third which gives her such a beautiful feminine look. This female will give you a little more frame and I love bigger framed females because they are always so much easier to find bulls to mate to. Since we took her picture this heifer has already started to change. You might not even recognize her come sale time. I think a bull like X-files or Rock Star would mate perfectly with this type of female.

Lot 27 is a little different mating that I guarantee will make a tremendous cow and have the potential to be a donor some day. You can keep this catalog for three years and come back and tell me if I was wrong but I don’t think I will be. This female reminds me a lot of her dam when she was a calf. Thick, meaty, soggy middled but a little coarse and not as pretty as others. Don’t hold that against her all she needs is time and she will catch up to if not beat some of the “pretty” ones down the road. Red Legends 20

BLACK ANGUS FEMALES

Every year we put a hand full of blacks on the sale that represent the direction we are trying to go with the herd. Lot 28 is a prime example of the type of female we like. Long, deep, stout, sound and feminine all describe this female. Her dam is a tremendous foundation donor in our program and we have high hopes for her in the future. 8040 is moderate framed super stout and big bodied and she passed it all onto her daughter. This female is the type that you can breed several different ways. I think she would work really well crossing with a Simmental, Limousin or club calf bull. Take a close look at this one sale day!

All year long the guys have joked around calling this female the Monopoly heifer because she had an M at the top of her tag signifying that she was a Motive. They swear she is as thick and impressive as a Monopoly and I have to agree with them. This female is unique from the standpoint that she doesn’t look like a typical Angus heifer. She is loaded with muscle and I really appreciate how soft made she is for being so stout. Since the day this heifer was born she has been a stand out.

These two females are prime examples of what that female does. She will make them deep, sound and femining. Lot 31 had flushmate sisters to her sell in years past and reports back on those were very positive. They have beautiful udders and have maintained their condition through as cows. Ravishing Ginger 523 has a loaded pedigree: Tess is a 2-time National Champion Female; Roy Rogers is a National Champion Bull and Genex sire. We are very excited about this bred heifer and believe she has alot potential to be a foundation female for anyone looking to build a herd. She is the maternal sister to the 2014 Kentucky State Fair Supreme Champion Female that Garry Taylor Showed. Lot 35 is a heavy muscled female loaded with capacity and eye appeal. Her EPD profile is just as impressive as she is. a -1.0 to a 108 growth curve and a 0.86 Marb. This heifer is in the top 8% in WW 10% in YW 13% in TM 5% HPG & CEM and 3% for Marb. Lot 47 is a maternal sister to SLGN Wide Open 931W. A herd sire we sold that is now being ran in Kansas at Kevin Sale’s place. This heifer is as long as she is wide. I really like her width she carries from her chest floor all the way through the center of her body and out of her hip. Her dam is a very special female in our herd. We just really love the calves she produces. Red Legends 27

Bred heifers

This is a very speacial offering that we are so excited about we are going to retain 50% embryo interest in her. Dad had been working on this project for four years and was almost ready to reap the reward of seeing her go into production. Her dam is no longer with us but she was one gorgeous female very similar to Lot 48. She was a square as you could made one and still had a soft easy keeping look about her. Lot 48 has been an eye catcher since the day she was born. Wide chest floor, ton of volume and upper rib shape, big hip and functional. I could go on all day talking about hom in love I am with this female but until you see her in person I don’t think you will understand. She is AI bred to Cowboy Cut so her calf will have Rock Star, X-Files & Cowboy Cut in its pedigree. That’s a very easy pedigree to market to anybody across the country.

The last of the X-Files daughters to be offered in the sale but certainly not the least. This female is rock solid from every angle you look at her. She has muscle, volume, femininity, bone, low birth weight, high yearling epd. You want it, she’s got it! X-Files is becoming one of our more favorite herd sires to use on bigger framed cows that need a little more muscle and body. He is really getting the job done for us. The dam to this female produced the 2013 NAJRAE Futurity Champion female and has been an excellent source for producing bulls desirable to the commercial cattleman.

Black Bred heifers Lot 50 is a female that I have always really liked. She has always been the highest performing, stoutest made and longest patterend. The Florabelle cow family has been one of the most consistent pedigrees in our program. You can guarantee they will be smooth made, big hipped and deep sided. Lot 50 was AI bred to HF Tiger 4/28 and pasture exposed to SLGN Motive 4/30-8/1/14

Service Sire to Lot 51 Lot 51 is a larger framed female that has a great growth spread in her EPD profile. This heifer is really well balanced from front to back. She is deep sided, long spined and I really appreciate how level she is out of her hip. She was AI bred 4/28 to Schiefelbein HD 1241. This mating has the potential to produce a truly outstanding calf that will be very marketable. Red Legends 29

A Consensus daughter that goes back to one of my favorite black cows, Florabelle 2714. This pedigree speaks for itself. Lot 52 is a high quality female that does a great job of combining power and femininty in a well-balanced package. Lot 52 was AI bred 4/28 to HF Tiger. I would expect this calf to hit the ground growing. I know you won’t be disappointed with this purchase.

Destiny is the type of heifer that you take home and use to produce fancy show heifers and beautiful replacement females. Destined 661 was a tremendous female producer for us. His daughters udders are perfect size and boy do the milk. I would expeck Lot 53 to be the same.

Lot 54 comes from a very powerful cow family that consistently producers high performing very marketable progeny. This female will be no different. She is a deep bodied female that will not be very hard to keep in good condition. She was AI bred to Schiefelbein HD 1241 on 4/30 and pasture exposed 5/1-8/1/14 to SLGN Motive. Red Legends 30

You have seen four maternal sisters to this mating so you know what the dam can do. We will have Bela at the farm available for viewing sale day and I believe once you see how much cow there is in that moderate package you will instantly fall in love. Cutting Edge has been producing some very eye appealing females and rugged bulls. This mating is about as outcross as you can get these days. Canadian on the bottom side and Black Angus two generations back on the top side. We guarantee 1 pregnancy if implanted by a certified technician.

Selling 3 embryos by Cutting Edge and the dam to Messmer Packer S008. These embryos will make tremendous females or bulls. This pedigree is just different enough they could add some variety to your herd. At the NAJRAE show in Grand Island, NE this summer there were some Cutting Edge daughters there that were really attractive and had just the right amount of muscle. We are guaranteeing 1 pregnancy if implanted by a certified technician.

They will be easy feeding and heavy muscled, just the way the growers like them and they will have maternal strengh that is 3+ generations deep. SLGN Xclusive 0300X is a full sister to these embryos and when you see her in person you will not be able to take your eyes off of her. Big foot, big bone, the biggest caboose I have ever seen on a cow and big bodied. She was one of Dads favorite cows and I have a good feeling these embryos are going to look alot like her. Cowboy Kind These embryos are maternal sibs to lot 5 so if you liked her you might want to take a good look at these. Cowboy Kind was the $75,000 high selling bull at Pieper Red Angus this spring. He sure turned a lot of heads. I really like the width that he has and carries from the ground up. He stands on a solid foot, is extremely heavy muscled and loaded with volume and power. The 029X cow is a smooth feminine female that has produced 2 outstanding natural calves in the last two years. Get your hands on some outstanding genetics.
