A GUIDE TO EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs):EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www. simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in: • Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. • Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. • Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. • Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. • Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. • Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) • All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well- conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. Every year come breeding season we scratch our heads trying to figure out what to breed to. Selling this bull really makes us scratch our heads while trying to answer that question! Ramblin Man continues to impress as a 2 year old just as much as he did as a calf. His full brother Upper Hand has absolutely exceeded expectations with his first calf crop. Ramblin Man is probably as smooth of a power bull as we have ever raised. The shape and the power that he maintains while staying sound and athletic is quite impressive. He spent the summer running on cows and held his natural shape and mass all the way through. The success of the Hope Floats cow has been well documented throughout the Simmental breed. Daughters have gone on to different operations across the country to be successful for their new owners and sons have proven to produce the right type and kind. A two-year-old bull that we purchased last year at Werning’s sale, but unfortunately have not had the opportunity to use. He is a last minute entry based on the fact we just have to many bulls and it’s a shame we didn’t get a chance to sample him. These three brothers are an impressive group of men, backed by a cow that is proving herself worthy of the donor pen! These bulls carry all the characteristics of what you envision when you combine the Hope Floats cow family with the Sparkle cow family. Power, Sound, Fleshing Ability, and the look that has carried those cow families to the forefront of the Simmental breed. Slight differences set the trio apart. 935 would be the lead bull out of our Denver pen of 3. A favorite of many, he has as much true performance as any in the offering. Balanced from nose to tail and shapely from top to bottom. We went ahead and saved his new owner a step and he is 50k and parent verified. 930 is the moderate ground pounder of the three. He maintains an impressively smooth shoulder to be packing that much power and dimension behind him. 933 is the combination bull with a clean front end and balance from every angle. All three of these bulls have the genetic make-up and potential to be standing in a stud magazine at some point.

DAM OF LOTS 7A - 7D All four of these Hope Floats sons were members of our Denver pen of 5. A super sound group of young bulls that are royally bred. Their two flush mate sisters sold in our fall sale to our good friends at RKC Cattle and Lone Pine Cattle for an average of $23,500. There are very slight differences in this group of bulls but all have a consistently great set of feet and legs along with testicular development for their age. 139 was our lead bull in our pen of 5. He has been a phenotypic stand out since birth creating the most balance from end to end. 103 is the power bull of the group. He possesses the most bone circumference and power as you study him down his top and through his stifle. 130 and 134 are absolute peas in a pod. They have the signature Hope Floats length and smoothness that has proven to be such an asset from a weight and performance stand point in all of Hopes sonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s.

The quality of these young cows and heifers runs deep in to the offering. 858 & 760 are two females that should not be leaving the farm. We truly believe in the genetic potential of this pedigree as they are full sibs to Upper Hand, the Lot 1 bull Ramblin Man, and Obsession. The females of this mating are so unique in there composition. They are angular and refined in their joint work, yet capacious and cowy through their center body. The bulls are powerful and smooth, all qualities that we strive to produce in our purebred Simmentals. C858 is the first calf heifer of the pair. She is soft and so smooth through her front third with enough capacity to have the making of a front pasture type donor cow. 760 is a coming 3 with her second calf. Great udder quality and the same design as her sisters except with maybe a shade more power and shape.

This group of coming 3â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s are absolute peas in a pod. I could go through and write a footnote for every individual but it would be excessively repetitive. The only reason these girls are in the sale is that we are just flat out of space. So we decided to offer the 3 yr olds in their entirety. If you are in need of some cows that are sound footed, good milking, easy fleshing, and right in their overall look then you need not look further. As an added bonus the majority of these will have calves at side by sale day. This group of cows were cleaned up with the Lot 2 bull, TNGL Upper Class C816. This group of fall bred Simmental cows is full of top notch pedigreed cows that have and will continue to produce top end stock for years to come.
