Welcome to the 35th Annual Prestigious N.I.L.E. Red Angus sale! Stop and think about that for a minute. For 35 years this event has brought you some of the breeds leading genetics. The game has changed drastically over the last 35 years; we have come from a small breed that was hardly noticed in many circles to a breed that is quickly approaching being the second largest breed in the U.S. Even in the last couple of years when most other breeds are experiencing a decline in their numbers, the Red Angus breed has seen significant growth and expansion. Why you may ask why is this trend taking place? It’s very simple; the cattle are just that good. Well known for being an advantageous cross on nearly any cow walking a pasture and being very commercially accepted. Superior Livestock has documented proof over a multiyear study that Red Angus influenced females are consistently worth more than any other breed influenced cattle that they sell on their service. A $4 to $8 premium is a pretty easy bonus to take by just using Red Angus to influence your cattle. It is our absolute pleasure to offer you this set of Red Angus females and genetics. In mid-July we travelled around the country hand selecting these cattle from the very top of each breeder’s herds. That within itself is a commitment from the breeders you won’t find in many other places. After over 2 1/2 weeks and 5,000+ miles on the road, we are exceptionally pleased with the cattle offered within the pages of this catalog. I would encourage you to study the genetics being offered and find those that will work in your breeding program. If you have specific questions about any of the lots being offered, I would encourage you to contact the breeders directly or myself. We will be more than happy to assist you in any way possible. If you are unable to attend the sale in person, please feel free to give me or one of the sales staff a call. We will be more than happy to represent your absentee bid and rest assured that those bids will be held in the strictest of confidence as you have come to expect from us. Superior will also be broadcasting the sale this year. If you plan to use their service, you will need to get registered with them well ahead of sale time. Kaye and I look forward to offering you some of the very best genetics in the country and hope to see you at the sale!

MTRAA Honors Bob & Rita Dige of Double Tree Red Angus with the President’s Award Bob and Rita Dige have raised Red Angus cattle for the better part of 25 years and have been active members of the MTRAA. When approaching retirement, they knew they wanted to keep their herd together. An apportunity arose for them to keep the herd intact, while tremendously benefitting research and development for the livestock industry. Here is their story… MSU is the new owner of 51 head of cattle, which the university bought from MSU alumni Bob and Rita Dige of Double Tree Red Angus out of Sand Coulee, MT. The herd includes 32 cows, 9 bred heifers and 10 replacement heifers. It is the first Red Angus purebred cattle herd the university has ever owned, according to Darrin Boss, superintendent of MSU’s Northern Agricultural Research Center (NARC), in Havre. “Owning the herd is a tremendous opportunity for MSU and Montana,” Boss said. “The purchase will enable MSU to conduct research on various issues such as heifer development, lifetime productivity, reproduction and profitability, among other economically relevant traits. This type of research will have an impact for Montana cattle ranchers for years to come.” The Diges visited MSU’s NARC facility at Fort Assiniboine near Havre in September 2015 for a Red Angus field day tour sponsored by the Montana Red Angus Association. Boss mentioned to the Diges that several MSU faculty were actively searching for and hoping to purchase purebred Red Angus cattle for a variety of livestock research projects. In October, MSU purchased the herd from the Diges for market value, in part by using sales income from the university’s existing Black Angus herd. The Red Angus herd is now living at the Bozeman Agricultural Teaching and Research Farm, which the Department of Animal and Range Sciences in the College of Agriculture manages. MSU Extension Beef Cattle Specialist, Rachel Endecott, and MSU Julie Morton, President Assistant Professor of Genetics, Jennifer Thomson, both in the Departinfo@gmracattle.com ment of Animal and Range Sciences, said the herd will have a major 406-580-6526 and lasting impact on Montana’s cattle industry, student instruction and university livestock research. Francis Koenig, Vice President Thomson, who studies the physiology and biology of economically francis@midrivers.com important traits in livestock breeding and genetics, said the Diges’ 406-429-2925 recordkeeping will allow MSU to build on the herd’s genetic evaluation and improve predictions of cattle genetic merit that are applicable to Christina Pierce the beef industry. Secretary/Treasurer Boss said the herd should instigate additional university-wide beef cattle research in livestock nutrition, supplementation, range efficiency MTRAASecretary@gmail.com and breeding. 406-663-2251 “It’s quite a legacy the Diges Veronica Christensen, Director are making to the criters@charter.net future students 406-208-4315 of Montana State University and Mark Jansma, Director the beef cattle angus_baron@yahoo.com industry of Mon406-861-8619 tana,” he said. “We’re all every excited about it.” Karen Raisland, Director

Year after year I am impressed with the breeders in this sale as they let me pick the donation heifer for the sale from their herd. This little lady comes to us from the Christensen Red Angus program. Trilogy’s Maiden is a paternal granddaughter of the hard to find GMRA Trilogy 0226 and a maternal granddaughter of the even harder to find Red Flame 9497. For those of us who have been around the horn a time or two, you will recognize this pedigree as an elite female producing mating. Get your tickets bought and bring your rabbit’s foot to the sale!
Selling Lottery Style. Each $10 bid receives a ticket in the drawing. The heifer will be drawn for and awarded at the end of the sale. All proceeds raised from the Donation Heifer will go to support the Montana Red Angus Association as well as the advertising placed in regional publications throughout the bull sale season, which promotes the Montana breeders and the Red Angus breed!

Dam CRA Montana Rose
Xtra Rosy is a direct daughter of the Flying W Xtra 111X bull who got the attention of many a couple of years ago by siring the high selling open heifer calf at $11,000 in this very sale. 111X really stamps his daughters with that super attractive “female” look that we all like. Rosy’s dam is a daughter of Bieber Boone 8000 who was also well known for producing females that just plain worked. Don’t miss this heifer as you sort through the cattle in the stalls on sale day!

This January born bred heifer was on my short list as a heifer calf a year ago. She is sired by CRA Montana Trilogy, who is a GMRA trilogy 0226 son that walks their pastures as a herd sire. Her dam is a daughter of the great Fritz Justice bull that has been very popular among many progressive breeders. Look for explosive growth and excellent carcass traits from this young female along with the maternal traits that will make her a matriarch in your herd for years to come.

This is a dark cherry red heifer that is extremely feminine featured. She is very cleaned fronted and offers length and extension in a touch larger framed package. When you look at her on the profile you have to notice how balanced and level topped she is. A very attractive female that is athletic in her movement. On paper she is in the top 3% for the Gridmaster Index, top 4% for MARB and the top 5% for REA. These carcass traits with her balance and eye appeal is impressive! Her sire, Bieber Deep End, brings together two top sire lines, not to mention two of what are some of the very top cowlines at Bieber Red Angus. He also has powerful traits on paper. Top 1% Gridmaster Index, top 7% WW, Top 3% YW, top 8% MILK and a very impressive TOP 1% for both Marbling and REA. Her six year old dam has beautiful udder with great teat size and shape. She is also very cleaned fronted and feminine featured and she has bred back to the AI and on time every year. This is a phenotypically pleasing heifer that also doesn’t disappoint you from a calving ease and carcass standpoint on paper. We truly think this is one of the top picks of our herd and she would be a great asset to yours! 35thAnnual Prestigious Red Angus Sale October 20, 2017 7

This stylish heifer calf is stretchy and well built. She is a nice dark cherry red color and a perfect representative of the RCRA Razor Edge calves that we have on the ground this season. She comes from a cow family that continues to produce top calves – both bulls and heifers. Her Dam has an MPPA of 105 on four calves and her Grand Dam has an MPPA of 106 on 8 calves. The moderate, fleshy females in this cow line stay in our herd a long time. These cows have solid feet, level udders and good dispositions – things that all Cow Producers aim for. We are confident that this heifer calf will continue this tradition.

A definite standout, you always found Low Light when you were checking pasture or working cows and calves this summer. Her dam is from the Low Light cow family and her great grand dam was the high selling lot on the 1st ABS Influence Sale held during the NWSS in Denver. She commanded the top price of $8500. The next dam back was the 1st Larson Red Lightning daughter to ever sell and she was a high seller on the Prestigious NILE sale that year. 747E’s dam has earned a 102.1 MPPA. On the sire side Low Light is by CSPF Cash Money 11C, a Badlands Opportunity son out of a black red gene carrier granddaughter of Legendary Angus sire CA Future Direction. Also in the pedigree you find Forster Copper Queen, Mulberry 26P, Traveler 004, and Glacier Logan 210. Cash Money was Bull calf Champion at the Iowa State Fair and stood 2nd in class in the NAILE show in Louisville. Be sure and find this deep, capacious, thick made stylish heifer on Sale Day! She’s a good one!

Bred to RAVN Defense C550 (3486928) 5/20-6/20/2017 Stu definitely selected one that we didn’t want to sell and one that is hard to let go of. Only because we had a flush sister and maternal sister at the side of the dam did we agree to consign her. In 2015 we sold 2 packages of flush mate embryos and we think that it speaks volumes that they were purchased by prior owners of the cow! A maternal brother was a sale highlight on last year’s Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic. 692’s stats look good as she ranks in the top 30% or higher in 8 different traits and her scan data shows her with a 117 ratio for IMF and a 108 on rib eye. Pride 692D is sired by the outcross bull Lookout 153X, a bull whose progeny excel in growth, maintenance energy and carcass traits. 153X adds style, rib shape and excellent feet and legs structure. Lookout‘s progeny have seen a lot of purple too! Combing pedigree, performance and phenotype makes Pride 692D an excellent choice for your future donor cow. Pride 692D is bred to Bullis Creek’s new herd sire RAVN Defense 5/20-6/20/ 2017. Defense is a super well-balanced 5L Defender son that is strong on moderate birth, growth, carcass and maternal.

ET heifer who has “Brood Cow” written all over her. Dam is from the famed Blockana cow family at Feddes Red Angus where she produced several top herd sires and many productive daughters. She is an extremely thick and deep made cow that has a tremendous udder and near perfect feet and legs. At 12 years of age she is still sound and producing both embryos as well as natural calves. Sire is becoming known for his productive daughters that excel in both calving ease and early maturing fast growth. This heifer is extremely balanced both phenotypically and on paper. She will make a very productive cow.

Unless you are just getting into the Red Angus breed, the Sleek cow family from the Feddes program is very familiar. This bred heifer was on my short list before I found out that she was from the Sleek cow family and moved up to number 1 when I learned of her lineage. She is sired by the great Montana 44X bull that has proven to be a female making machine. Her dam is a Big Sky daughter from the Sleek cow family. If you search for maternal females with growth and carcass added in as an extra bonus, you will love this bred heifer. With her performance, maternal traits, EPD’s and phenotype, I won’t be surprised to see her end up in an ET program somewhere.

The first time we have ever offered a Native Fox heifer. She is the real deal, something special and out of one of our foundation dams. Her pedigree goes back to Dunlouise Red Native F207 and would be outcrossed from anything here in the US. Then topped off with some Becton Epic R397 and Andras New Direction R240. This is a gem of a heifer and will be an added bonus to anyone’s program. Flatiron Native Fox 716 has a gentle disposition for a possible young 4-Her. She will not carry a lot of frame so won’t be very intimidating for the younger crowd.

Here is a chance to take home one of the first HXC Declaration 5504C daughters on the market! This stylish female combines the power of Declaration with the super productive, highly maternal Lakota cow family. Her dam posts an MPPA of 105.2 on 10 calves, with every heifer being retained as a replacement. After Stuart and Kaye’s visit, we decided to let Lakota 788 be the first daughter to leave the herd at weaning. She will bring the power of 30 years of females with MPPA’s over 100, while maintaining an incredible phenotype and genotype. A top notch set of numbers places 11 of her EPD’s in the top 30% of the breed or higher. She’s just waiting to make an impact in someone’s herd!

Sire Red SSS Soldier 365W
Elegant!!! A heifer that will most definitely stand some show-ring competition. Length, muscle expression and structure – she wraps it all up; which is no surprise, when you look at her gorgeous dam. This 9 yr old mama has had 7 calves with a 365 day calving interval (5 bulls and only 3 heifers). Her 1st heifer sold at NILE in 2000 and the other gem is retained in the KRA herd. Harmony 8073 has NEVER had her feet trimmed; and her udder is still perfect.

There was already smoke in the air when we pulled into the Koenig Ranch driveway. I sometimes wonder if it ever rains in that country, this year was certainly no exception for the lack of rain but just as in past years the cows and calves were all in good shape. This April born heifer calf comes from a long line of extremely efficient cows that are very well suited to producing with minimal inputs. This is obvious from her 65 lb BW and her 698 lb WW. Keep an eye out for future calves sired by the Make a Mill bull, he is the real deal. If efficiency is your game, her name is Scarlet 7195. Oh, and you’ll be very pleased with the way she looks too!

The Laubach family has a long history of bringing some great bred females to the NILE. This one is no exception. Zina brings not only growth and maternal traits to the table but also pedigree. She is sired by the Feddes Vacate A207 bull who is a son of Montana 44X from the Feddes program. Maternally she is backed by the great Messmer Zina cow who certainly needs no introduction to Red Angus circles around the world. Zina will be a sound functional brood cow that will leave her mark in your herd for years to come. October 20, 2017

As we toured the Lost Creek heifer pasture, I was continually drawn to this heifer. She is one of those that just keeps coming to the top and has the “look”. Her sire is the Handsome bull who was campaigned successfully a couple of years ago and was Grand Champion Bull at the State Fair for Lost Creek. Her dam is straight Basin bred with her dam being the incredible female maker EXT 78U9. Built in calving ease with a nice balance acrossed the board on her EPD profile. Don’t miss this March born heifer calf if you are looking to add a new cow family to your herd.

This past spring Lucht Red Angus had the fine opportunity to purchase Lance Chaney’s entire Red Angus Herd. Lacey 678 caught my eye then when I first saw her and was Stuart’s 1st pick when selecting for the sale. Though I wanted to keep her in our herd, the NILE sale is about bringing your best. A well balanced daughter of Spitn Image X014 with plenty of length. Her dam is very maternal female with a beautiful udder. Lacey 678 sells AI bred on 4/2 to 5L Defender 560-30Z. Examined safe.

When you pull into a pasture with 150 heifer pairs, what are the odds of your top pick being out of a two year old dam? That’s exactly what happened when we arrived at the Milk Creek Reds pasture. Bruce is very happy with the Express 9127 daughters that they have in production and has went back to using him AI to produce more of them. This heifer calf’s dam is from one of the great Lakota cows that Milk Creek is famous for. Cowboys come a runnin!

Dam RCRA Lacey 16Y
This heifer calf absolutely “jumped out at me while we were walking through the Rock Creek herd. I fully anticipated getting denied when I told Charlie and Linda that she was the one I wanted. Her dam is a full sister to the 11X cow who is the dam of Razor 15Z and You Think 33A. A maternal sister to this heifer is working in the Ressler herd in N.D. and has a MPPA of 102.3. Lacey 7E is sired by the exciting new herd bull that Charlie and Linda purchased from the L83 Ranch in N.D. He was purchased for his performance, muscle and disposition as well as the reputation of his sire to produce outstanding females. His dam posts an MPPA of 105. The Lacey cow family has a reputation for producing progeny with built in performance and eye appeal, great udders and feet and legs. Cowboys come to the sale prepared!

The Shick family has held nothing back, sending this awesome female to the prestigious NILE sale! Samaria E007 is a deep bodied, thick made heifer with a pedigree rich with TJS owned sires! Her balanced EPDs offer top percentiles for WW, YW, Marbling, CW and REA. Her sire, 5L Blockade 2218-30B, has started to cause a ‘buzz’ amongst the Red Angus circles. He was the top performer in Mehlholf’s 2015 sale where he was purchased by the Shick’s and 9 Mile Ranch in WA. His first calf crop dominated the 5L Bull sale this spring, and Shick’s first sons sell in their annual bull sale, Friday, February 2nd, 2018. He is absolutely one of the most pre-potent sires in the breed today, and if you like them thick and stout, your gonna love the Blockade calves! Her dam, Samaria A214, raised this awesome heifer on her first attempt. She is a powerful Berry Cherry daughter stemming from a Julian 3811 x Charger x Tassel Robinhood bred dam that originated in the Blue Spruce herd in Canada.

Miss Stella 5E comes to us from first time consignor, Dana Weatherford. She is a March born heifer that was an easy pick for me as we did our selection tour. Her sire is RCRA Bull Market 078B who she purchased from Rock Creek Red Angus. He is a powerful bull that is making his mark as an exceptional female producer. Her dam is a past NILE Merit heifer that started Dana’s Red Angus herd and is an impressive female in her own right. A long spined female that can cover her tracks with power and phenotype. Donated by Graystone Cattle Company Stuart & Kaye Gilbert 641-919-0196 Conquest 495 is proving himself to be a top quality sire of both bulls and heifers. His EPD’s are equally impressive ranking him in the top 11% GM, 1% WW, 1% YW, 14% HPG, 19% Marb, 2% CW and 5% REA. His first calf crop was undefeated at the major shows in the Get of Sire classes and a son was Reserve Champion Bull Calf in Denver and the NILE as well as Champion Spring Bull calf at the Iowa State Fair. This may very well be some of the last semen we will sell from 495.
