Friends, I am amazed at the reaction we have received to our first ad for our herd reduction. I’m sure that not everyone understands what our plans are or exactly what the opportunity is in this sale. Let me assure you that this is not a dispersal sale. Perhaps a semi-retirement but in no way a plan to leave the Red Angus scene. I have been asked what I would do if I retired, my response is always, “Exactly what I’m doing now but just at a level where I can comfortably enjoy it.” Through this sale and the phase II sale on October 15, 2018 we will sell 75% of our female herd. This sale will offer most of the fall portion of our herd. We are offering 100% of the ET pregnancies that will calve from now until the end of 2018. None have been held back or sold off privately. We are also including those fall heifer calves that we were able to have ready at this time. The bulls being offered have not been on the market until now. Select Donors are coming straight out of our donor pen. At the last minute I decided to include all of our spring 2-year-old pairs that we aren’t flushing. Lack of rain and spring green up is why we aren’t holding these cattle until the fall sale. I can feel the level of expectation for this sale and it is my desire to live up to that expectation. We will only be retaining a small number of Donors, Bred Heifers, and Heifer Calves to continue the C-Bar herd. Sisters, Daughters, and pregnancies from the remaining C-Bar core genetics will be offered in this and the fall sale. Through this small core we plan to offer more opportunity to our young partners to grow and become a bigger part of the C-Bar program. Cindy and I will be able to redirect our energy, time, financial and physical resources to do a better job for our partners and customers as well as take more personal time away from ranch duties. When I was a young man I worked hard and fast, as I gained experience I worked with a better plan, and still with success I gained a greater focus and worked smarter. When more resources became available I worked harder, as I grew older it became difficult to work hard and fast so I worked longer. With a focus and drive to create superior Red Angus genetics, Steve Maier and his family have devoted their lives to focusing on the advancement of the Red Angus breed and the beef industry as a whole. Steve recently said it best, “it’s time to sit back and smell the roses”. This doesn’t mean C-Bar is going anywhere…. in fact the calf crop will be as powerful and impressive as ever before! In the valiant effort to continue this path, large numbers of embryos from donors of elite status have been transferred in commercial satellite cooperator herds. This will enable bull customers the opportunity to purchase more full brothers to increase the uniformity of their calf crops. These large numbers of ET calves being born each year has created this opportunity to tie to some of the most elite donors, bred heifers, pairs, and genetics ever produced in Brownell, Kansas! C-Bar is making great stride in the area of breed improvements, through a feeder calf buy back program established for customers. This will allow carcass and performance data to be collected on large numbers of Red Angus sired cattle. The data collected will enable more rapid genetic progression. The largest and most elite offering of pregnancies to sell this year will be offered on May 12. This will include highly proven and rare genetics that are the last of their kind! Fall open heifer calves from the heart of the ET program, two-year old spring pairs, and a select group of proven donors will sell! The offering will be available for viewing prior to the sale. Each animal becomes the risk of the Buyer as soon as sold, but it shall be the obligation of the Seller to see that animals are fed and cared for free of charge to Buyer, until loaded for shipment or until the expiration of 48 hours after the sale, whichever occurs sooner.

All animals are eligible for interstate shipment, except as otherwise announced. Interstate health papers will be furnished for each animal requiring tuberculosis and brucellosis tests in accordance with Federal Regulations.

Any changes from information of any kind in this catalog will be announced from the auction box and such announcements shall take precedence.

6. DEFAULT

A GUIDE TO EPD’S

EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCE (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE. ACCURACY (ACC), is the reliability that can be placed on the EPD. An accuracy of close to 1.0 indicates higher reliability. Accuracy is impacted by the number of progeny and ancestral records included in the analysis. HB | HERDBUILDER INDEX – Need bulls for developing a profitable cowherd and maximizing the value of marketed progeny? Select a bull with a high HB value.

CEM | CALVING EASE MATERNAL – Another number to pay attention to if you are retaining heifers. Selecting bulls with a high CEM will increase the probability of those daughters calving unassisted.

GM | GRIDMASTER INDEX – If you market all of your calf crop and want to increase the value of that calf crop, select a bull with a high GM value to maximize your profit.

STAY | STAYABILITY – The most important trait if your goal is developing cows that stay productive, thus increasing your profitability. Bulls that have a high Stay EPD are expected to sire daughters that remain productive in the herd until at least 6 years of age.

CED | CALVING EASE DIRECT – Breeding Heifers? Select bulls with a high CED to increase the probability that the heifers will calve unassisted. BW | BIRTH WEIGHT – Predicts differences in birth weight. BW is included in the CED EPD, so simplify your decisions by selecting bulls based on CED instead of BW.

WW & YW | WEANING WEIGHT AND YEARLING WEIGHT – Predicts differences in weight at weaning and yearling. While selection based on these growth measures can increase your payweight, be cautious what the bull’s other EPDs are. MILK | MILK – Predicts differences in weaning weight of daughter’s progeny due to milk production. ME | MAINTENANCE ENERGY – Selecting bulls with a lower ME EPD will decrease the amount of feed his daughters will require to maintain body weight. HPG | HEIFER PREGNANCY – Retaining heifers? Select bulls with a high HPG to increase the percentage of exposures that result in a calving observation.

MARB | MARBLING SCORE – Select bulls with high MARB EPD to increase the number of progeny that grade Choice or Prime. YG | YIELD GRADE – Marketing calves on a grid? Placing selection pressure on YG EPD will decrease the number of YG discounts on grid- marketed progeny. CW | CARCASSS WEIGHT – Selecting bulls with a high CW EPD will increase the weight of the hanging carcass, which directly impacts revenue. REA | RIB EYE AREA – Need to add muscle? Select bulls with a high REA EPD to increase rib eye area, which favorably increases Yield Grade. FAT | BACKFAT – Need to reduce waste in carcasses? Select bulls with a low FAT EPD to reduce backfat, which favorably increases Yield Grade.

A GUIDE TO RECIPIENT COWS

The age of the recipient cows has been classified and noted on each pregnancy lot to help the buyer have a better idea of the age of the cow that is carrying the pregnancy. These females all have been hand selected and are expected to efficiently raise the pregnancies they are carrying. When these embryos were transferred, the cows classified as old were expected that this would potentially be the last calf that they raised. Udder quality on all recipient cows are considered satisfactory and capable of raising the pregnancy they are carrying. The cows classified as young and mature are suitable to have another embryo transferred once they have calved. The recipient cows have been under the same vaccination and mineral protocol as the purebred herd and all herd health is current. **Please note that there is no way to know the exact age of the recipient cows, these are estimated ages.** YOUNG: ESTIMATED 3-5 YEARS OLD MATURE: ESTIMATED 6-9 YEARS OLD OLD: ESTIMATED 10 YEARS OLD + Note Regarding Pregnancies: All November pregnancies that have been labeled as unsexed will be sexed and the results will be available the week leading up to the sale.
