Fellow Cattle Enthusiasts, Welcome to the 30th Annual Kearns Cattle Company Bull Sale! What a set of bulls that will be offered on March 14, 2019 in Rushville, Nebraska by a family that has deep tying roots in the beef business. This is an offering “30 years in the making” and certainly a set of bulls you will not want to miss out on evaluating. For the past 4 years, we have had the opportunity to work with the Kearns family and their crew and we have a great appreciation for their dynamic breeding program. As many of you know, the Kearns family base their program around the customer service and relationship aspect of the business. They strive to improve their product each year for their customers, many of you that have been customers of Tom’s since the inaugural sale. They strive year after year to build better bulls that last longer, offer more economical incentive, and check more boxes for their customers. They have continued to utilize ultrasound data to improve the carcass merit of their product, use new sires to improve the genetics, and make breeding piece acquisitions in order to bring in new and fresh genetics that will assist them on their quest of product improvement. Embryo transfer has been utilized heavily within the program and they will continue to utilize this as a tool to offer full and maternal brothers that are more uniform and offer more consistency. The donor pen is lined with cows of significant influence within the Simmental breed, as cows like Dolly, Victoria, 2077Z, Misty May, W992, and Tiara to name a few will continue to serve as the foundation for the future. Just four years ago, four sons of Dolly made a splash on the business, they were named: Carver, Certified, Classified, and Cannon. Those bulls went on to be AI sires that have experienced heavy use across the industry. The next year, a bull named Defiant was the high seller. He, along the bulls previously mentioned, have sizeable sire groups of sons in this very offering. The Kearns family believes in their program and utilizes their genetics in order to make sure they work for their customers. Consider this your invitation to join us for the 30th Annual Bull Sale at Kearns Cattle Company. The evening before the sale, please join us for a sale preview and social. Selection Tools

A Guide to Expected Progeny Differences Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)

$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well- conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org.

There is no denying the impact that Dolly has made on our program. Her sons have been featured in the last four bulls sales and have been members of our Grand Champion Pen of Three bulls twice. They walk at some of the leading seedstock and commercial herds in North America, while daughters are employed in donor pens nationwide. TKCC Fever is no exception to the type and kind of progeny that his dominant donor dam is so widely renown for producing. Three years ago there were a pair of full brothers known as Carver and Certified; they were both members of the NWSS Grand Champion Pen of Three Simmental Bulls. Carver topped the sale at $33,000, while Certified closely followed at $32,000. Both bulls went to progressive firms in North America that are well respected for the cattle that they produce. Last year, Escalade was a member of the NWSS Grand Champion Pen of Three Simmental Bulls along with two grandson’s of Dolly that were from Victoria. Valued repeat customer, Fenton Farms of Mississippi, selected Escalade for $28,000. Escalade was a full brother to the $70,000 Classified and $100,000 Cannon. Rest assured that the pedigree and consistency that back this set of Dolly sons is second to none and the earing potential that they bring forth is unlimited. We are proud of the offering that is 30 years in the making and are excited to share with you one of the most unique sons of the great Dolly ever born in Rushville, Nebraska!

TKCC Fargo 34F is another top recruit among this offering of bulls. He combines the phenotype, balance, pedigree, and structural integrity to be a true breeding bull. From the ground up, he is flawless in his basic build, robust in his rib design, and offers uniform and balanced numbers across the board. His dam needs no introduction to the Simmental breed or the beef business based on the accolades that she has accumulated over the course of time. Fargo follows in the footsteps of countless other full brothers and maternal brothers that have made a mark on the respective breeding program where they are employed. Here is an opportunity to own a son of Dolly and watch the impact he will make on your program!

052F is another member of the lucrative Pilgrim x Dolly flush that has worked on several different occasions. They are sound footed, big topped, thick ended, and long sided with exceptional body depth and fleshing ability. The influence of Dolly is monumental. If you retain females in herd, study the impact that this powerful pedigree has to offer.

013F is the final of the flush mate brothers by Pilgrim and from Dolly. Another stout constructed, big boned, long sided bull that offers superior maternal strength.

30th Annual Bull Sale

Lot 54

We have always based our program around prolific cow families of significance. The offering that makes up our 30th Annual Bull Sale is saturated with females throughout their lineage that tie back to foundation cow families that we have raised and assembled over the years. CCR Misty May 8014U was our selection a couple years back from Hidden Oaks Cattle Company. Before her employment in Canton, Texas she was working in the famed Cow Camp Program of Lost Springs, Kansas. KCC1 Folsom 512F.... one of the favorites among early visitors that have sorted through the bulls. Unmatched foot, bone, body, and mass. He was the lead bull in the 2019 NWSS Grand Champion Pen of Three Purebred Simmental Bulls. This dense made Purebred not only offers genuine stoutness and capacity, he is supported by breed leading performance on paper. Top 15% WW and top 15% YW. But, we don’t need to dwell on his predictors because he came to the weaning pen HEAVY! He boasts an adjusted WW of 884 lbs. after entering the world with a practical 85 lb. actual BW. If you can’t tell already, we are high on this real-world performance beef bull. He is a true example of “30 years in the making”.

From Our Customers

Art, my brother, Joe, and I have purchased Kearns bulls for the past 30 years. We have fed the calves through our feedlot many of those years and find the cattle to grow very efficiently. When sold on the grid, we see the Simmental genetics producing fed cattle that do very well in both yield and quality grade. -Joe & Jim Johnson (Hay Springs, NE) Art Lipps (Hay Springs, NE)

619F is certainly a heifer bull candidate that is backed by exceptional cow families. A few years back Vogler Cattle Company selected a top heifer bull from our bull sale that was the result of a great New Direction x Dolly mating. TKCC New Direction 62C has been used heavily within their program as a walking bull and to serve as cleanup their sale heifers. We decided to use the bull back on heifers in our program because we liked the results we were seeing! 619F is a good looking, well balanced, smooth made bull that is from a hard working two-year-old. He offers a sensible 83 lb. birth weight and weaned off at nearly 750 lbs.

Here is another top heifer bull option that offers a sensible birth weight of 68 lbs. His dam is a descendant of Vermillion Dateline. Top 25% CE, top 25% BW, and top 15% MCE.

627F leads off a trio of three CCR Anchor 9071B sons that all offer heifer bull capabilities. Anchor has reserved his spot as the “go-to” sire for creating low birth, calving ease type cattle that do not sacrifice the economical traits of importance such as weaning weight and growth. He entered the world at 85 lbs. and is backed by a Hammer daughter on the south side of his pedigree. He is a heifer bull option if used on well managed heifers.

6021F is another Anchor sired heifer bull option that is backed by a hard working No Remorse daughter that traces to the Driver x 1780 combination on the bottom side of her maternal pedigree. 80 lbs. at birth and spreads to over 700 lbs. at weaning time, here is a heifer bull option that will not sacrifice performance.

Lot 95

4F is another standout among the offering that will sell as lot 95. He is sired by TJ Main Event and backed by the influence of the great SAV Final Answer. There is no denying the performance, pounds, and potential that this bull offers from a breeding standpoint. His dam brought him to the weaning pen at an impressive 970 lbs. and he hasn’t let off the throttle yet! This big scrotal bull weighed in at 1450 lbs. for his actual yearling weight and we believe will sire progeny that will absolutely crush the scales with exceptional pay weight. More impressively he is what we consider a spread bull as he offers a sensible 80 lb. actual birth weight to accompany his pre weaning performance. He scanned with uniform ultrasound data and is a bull that we call a true beef bull that is right for the times!

From Our Customers

There is only one thing in the ranching business that is true, it is called hybrid vigor. A Simmental-Angus bull on our Angus cows is hard to compete with. A year ago, we at the Rocking J Ranch were able to receive data on our steer calves. They were 82% “Choice” and “Prime”; and Yield was 65.5%. On the market that day, the feeder received $85 per head premium. We have been using Kearns Cattle Company bulls for a number of years. We appreciate the disposition of these SimAngus cattle, and these bulls go out and work. Breed back on the cows is exceptional!. -Jerry and Todd Adamson (Valentine, NE)
