Dear Breeders and Friends, On behalf of our entire family, we invite you to our Seventh Annual Production Sale, consisting of 88 Red Angus bulls and 30 Registered Red Angus heifers, 40 commercial first calf heifer pairs, and 100+ commercial open heifer calves. Although our family has been in the cattle and ranching businesses for more than 40 years, we are now committed to the Red Angus seedstock industry. We acquired the Camp 1A and Windy Hill herds in their entirety over the last several years, and have invested heavily in new herd sires and donor females as well. Our most recent acquisition was a select group of bred heifers from the well-respected Six Mile Ranch program of Saskatchewan, Canada. We feel that with these purchases, we are moving in the right direction toward being one of the constant and reliable bull and female suppliers to the industry. Since 1978, our grandfather and father have owned and operated Smoky Y Ranch. They ran and continue to run a commercial herd with great success. We continue to utilize the best bulls we can find throughout North America for use in this herd, and it serves as the background for our decision to be in the registered business. We hope you can be with us for our sale April 9. We are hosting a preview gathering and supper on Wednesday evening prior to the sale. Everyone is invited, and the sale offering will be on display. Fellow Red Angus Enthusiasts, The Younkin Family have and are continuing to build the ultimate operation. It’s one of diversity as it spans thousands of acres stocked to the hilt. The roots of the operation would be totally commercial cow calf and that’s what keeps the whole operation grounded and profitable. When they acquired the initial registered red cattle nearly a decade ago, they were green to the seedstock business, but knew they would benefit raising their own bulls to run on the thousand plus commercial females they already had. The mindset and investment lead us to where we are today in assisting them with a true Rancher Philosophized annual Bull Sale. The Canadian based registered cows were acquired from operations that had successful endeavors in the bull business with reputation and fundamentally sound females. Females that can travel a distance to water, females with big, good feet, textbook udders, perfect fertility, and dominant rib and muscle shape with the most desired build. The foundation of this program was built with great eyes, by great stockmen, and the Younkin Family have surrounded themselves with great eyes to better their program in the beginning, but they have latched on now and there’s not much that the third generation misses in their daily evaluations. Cody and Kelly get it done in a non-stop fashion day in and day out. They are young, they are hungry, they are competitive, and good enough is not good enough. This cowherd continues to get better with each year, with each genetic investment, and with each challenge mother nature may throw their direction. Deep Western Kansas is a great place to ranch and raise a family, but those mother nature factors can be unbelievably harsh and relentless from droughts to winter storms, it’s not for the faint of heart. Those are just a few reasons the April 9 sale date needs to be in your travel plans, we’ll share some more... Smoky Y runs over 1000 commercial females that calve on grass April and May. The heaviest and top cut is split two ways between what they intend to breed to sell as pairs the following year and what is offered in regard to the open heifer division of the annual production sale. These ranch raised commercials are hardy, not pampered a day in their lives. Born on grass, grown on grass, and winter fed on grass. The pairs offered are A.I. bred to low birth weight bulls and cleaned up with the Smoky Y bull battery. For those that may be curious the cull heifers and steers are sold in Burlington every year in March or April whichever the marketplace favors the best result at the end of the day. Successful ranching isn’t rocket science, it is however, all about timing and the Smoky Y crew has that down to a science. A top shelf note for those that may not know, Smoky Y raised the Reserve Grand Champion Red Angus Female this year in Denver, a February heifer calf show by the Hartman Family. To say that one was an easy find, would be an understatement, and those that have took the time to visit would understand why. That particular heifer was in a very large pasture with zero cross fence and had to be found, that leaves one to wonder how many more of that caliber are in the midst of this ranch. The top 5 open registered females of this sale were hand-picked direct from the retaining pen, so that quality is substantially comparable the Denver Champion without question.

All bulls selling for $4000 or more are guaranteed against breeding injury for the first breeding season. A breeding season is defined as 90 days after turn out. Breeding injury is defined as an injury to penis or preputial tear with inability to extend. This is not an insurance policy. This guarantee does not cover non-breeding injury resulting from a accident or gross negligence. HERD HEALTH All calves have been PI tested. All bulls in the sale will have been semen checked and passed a fertility and soundness exam. Health certificates can be issued on any animal in the sale, making them eligible for interstate shipment. The bulls and females in the sale have been pre-weaned and weaning vaccinated for respiratory disease. They have been poured, dewormed and ear notch tested for BVD. All females have been palpated and pelvic measured. All heifers are guaranteed open and have been tested for BVD and calfhood vaccinated.
