Cattle Producers and Friends,
It is a pleasure to welcome you to our 32nd Annual Bull Sale. This is the most powerful and consistent group of bulls we have ever offered for sale. These bulls are the result of generations of breeding selection for thickness, fleshing ability, and length. They are developed with the customer in mind on a high roughage ration to ensure soundness and longevity. These bulls are progeny of some of the nation’s most elite AI sires, and we have propagated the influence of our lead donor females with an extensive embryo transfer program. These donors are backed by some of the true matrons of the Simmental and Angus breeds. We again look forward to visiting with past customers and friends, and we are excited about the opportunity to meet new ones. Our goal remains the same, we want to make these bulls as good as we can so they will go out and work for you, our customers. The bulls will be on display at the ranch on Wednesday, March 3rd from 1-5pm MST. We invite you to the ranch to inspect this great group of bulls and join us for food and hospitality. Please feel free to call us on any of the offering. Check out our website for videos of the bulls www.kearnscattleco.com. Regards, Zach Kearns

Fellow Cattle Enthusiasts,
The industry is forever changing it seems and the rat race to incorporate all the new bells and whistles with technology and genomics adds to the fire. However, at the end of the day, the ultimate goal is to continue to provide the world population with the absolute safest and best food protein known and enjoyed by man, beef. There is no question that our product has improved drastically over the last 50 years and that progress would be tenfold in the past 2 decades. Kearns Cattle Company doesn’t promote Certified Angus Beef, but they are implementing what it takes to make your cattle qualify year by year with the ultimate end product in mind. Let’s not forget the fact that they also know and understand the value of pay weight at weaning time for all ranching enterprises and that’s why the quest for low input raw performance is priority one at Kearns. The female base has been built from four Simmental females, and two diligent Angus females that allow for the consistency represented in this sale offering. The most recent acquisition of females would be a set of registered Angus females from a high reputation outfit with genetics and numbers to continue to accelerate herd/product improvement. Kearns Cattle Company has developed a reputation of quality seedstock and reliable customer service over the years with the ranching sectors of Nebraska, Wyoming, and South Dakota and they have expanded that into the registered program marketplace successfully with the same customer service. Bulls have stayed local to service the excellent commercial cowherds of Sheridan county and those surrounding counties, along with bulls being marketed into 25 plus states throughout the tenure of this bull sale series at the ranch in Rushville, NE. These cattle are well received by those that have made the plunge to invest in this program with many follow up/repeat purchases as well. Customer satisfaction is first and foremost here at Kearns Cattle Company. The impressive thing about the stock would be the constant and consistent density, mass, bone, foot quality, and look that KCC bulls offer to all sectors of the beef industry. The cattle have been proven to be improvers and enhancers for past customers and the success stories continue to mount. Kearns Cattle Company is absolutely committed to not being second best, both Tom and Zach are relentless competitors and have the drive, ambition, and know how to get it done and done right. The operation has annually made the investment in genetics, time, and overhead to bring the absolute best, year after year to ensure that your investment is only met by success and the results you desire. Beef industry fans we invite you to view the offering in Rushville in person or online at InnovationAgMarketing.com or Superior Livestock. Per usual, we are certain you will be impressed with the physical quality and the raw performance traits that these bulls can add to any program, commercial or seedstock. This is a “top shelf product” from a “top shelf family” with “sky’s the limit” customer service and satisfaction.

A Guide to Expected Progeny Differences Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)
$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well- conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org.

The 2021 Offering elite cow families | breed leading sires
Lot 1
Havana is quickly writing her own page into our program’s archives and doing more than filling her dam and second dam’s footsteps. A female that should have been campaigned more than she was, however in the three times she was out she made friends and left a positive imprint on the memories of those that viewed her. She is without a doubt the heaviest structured female in our donor battery with a substantial amount of look, shape, and shear skeletal width. Without question, those traits are passed down in her progeny and its evident that she is a true breeding piece with attributes to better the breed. Anyone that ties into these sons of Havana in the 2021 offering will reap the benefits of generations of consistent quality. As much as we try to refrain from mentioning any show ring success in this book, we must comment on the full sister to this pair of brothers. Right Time found his nitch on Havana further complimented the substance, length, heaviness of structure, and athleticism. Harmony found herself as Reserve Calf Champion at the Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City in both the Junior and Open Shows. For certain a female that required little aesthetic assistance much like her blaze faced brothers that sell as lot 1 and 2. 872H has always been a standout in the dense field of male contemporaries on the ranch since birth. We admire his foot size, bone dimension, power, shape and skeleton. What he offers from the shoulders back is challenging to replicate. If you’re a breeder desiring a Right Time son from an elite cow or an aggressive commercial cattleman with her enhancement on the list of criteria, this one will be on many shortlists for sale day.

3001H would be the brother born on the next ET cycle back, but he’s hot on the heels of his slightly bigger brother. He is super long sided, big in his upper rib, back, and in his pin set. He is the blaze faced bull in the offering to enhance length and outline size in a set of calves and he will always be a direct son of Havana by Right Time.

This will be the second set of ET Profit sired calves from Havana and we are certain these are tremendous in terms of their look and power. We believe that this lot 3 stud is a breeder bull for those that want the Profit influence that’s tied to a potent cow family. The Profit reputation is for the trademark look and length of the front one third. From his shoulder back we’re not sure there is one that has any more width, dimension, and skeletal integrity. He is an athlete in motion with great body and base width, with a big back, stout hip/pin placement, with extra depth of quarter. He is the true “rancher bull” of the trio.
Lot 4 would be as complete of an individual we have to offer from this mating series. Long necked, clean throated, smooth and flat through his shoulder with ideal transition into his forerib and center body with great depth and natural base width at the ground. 272H has ideal top shape and pin set with an ideal rear leg and huge feet. However, we think he’s just good cattle with some extra features and feel confident that he would be an asset to any breeding program from a physical build perspective.

the Kearns Cattle Co. 32nd annual bull sale
4027H is long sided and smooth with cowboy value and quality. The true raw payweight is one of the best traits of the Profit sire group.
Lot 6
This Angus matriarch was selected from the famed and historic Thomas Ranch program of Harrold, South Dakota. We were looking for a big numbered Angus donor with extra look and substance to go along with the numeric profile. This female has been our total package when it comes to true SimAngus production. Her sons have been sale features going to some of the most respected ranchers in the industry and her daughters have been retained in the program as substantial building blocks for the future at Kearns Cattle Company. We initiate the Precision line with an incredible set of sons by the solid black, nice numbered Broker son, Battle Cry. This flush is mind blowing from a length, size, and performance aspect. Both sexes would be the heaviest among their contemporaries with the center body depth, more than enough muscle and density, and the genetics needed for a positive impact on any operation, seedstock or commercial. It’s truly unfortunate that Denver decided to cancel, as this would have been our pen of percentage SimGenetic Bulls. Yes, there is that much consistency, uniformity, and eye appeal in this set of brothers as there should be, but we will let you sort the one that fits your scenario the best, maybe you need all four of them...

This pair of Profit sons would include another designated member of our selected “pen bulls” with a certain stellar stud. Lot 10 is quite possibly one the best SimAngus sons of Profit. He is certainly the perfect blend of eye appeal, pedigree, and real world value. His front third build is the kind that makes one take notice, his bold, deep rib intrigues one to engage, and his hip, pin set, and running gear leaves you evaluating and draws you in to invest. 2077Z got the job done here without question.

This mating to Turnpike on Misty May worked as intended. We were trying to bring you an outcross bred sire group with the needed payweight and product to enhance any operation. The extra length and scale of Turnpike himself crossed very well on the proven matriarch and left five sons that are the scale pounding kind. This rancher focused mating is loaded with big feet, ideal substance of bone, awesome structure, and the body shape and muscle needed for successful beef production. These brothers should cross well with any British focused cowherd as well as being suitable for seedstock production for those wishing to enhance grit and true performance.

The Echo sire group is one that you will see a lot of in the Ruby Cattle Co. program of south central Iowa. We sampled him with success here in Rushville as evident by Lot 25. 65H is loaded up with natural base width and dimension. He’s big and bold in his rib and hits the ground on a text book foot with definite agility when in motion. This calf is the loose built kind that will get cows bred and sire a set of calves with true real world merit.
OVAL F ECHO E709 - Sire of Lot 25
Here’s another trio of brothers by Battle Cry. Their dam would be a direct daughter of the CK Wager program builder, Melody, sired by Pilgrim. Over the years the Broker x Pilgrim blend has been proven to work each and every time. Another opportunity for progressive ranchers to invest in a set of full brothers that are very similar in type and kind. Much like their dam, these guys are extended in their kind with a shot more frame as well. They are very neat and smooth through the front one third with an abundance of rib shape and depth to go with their muscle shape and base width. Again, there is seedstock potential and value to the real world in this trio.

Dolly worked very well in this mating series to Battle Cry as evident by the sisters to these herdsire prospects in the making. The influence of a great, proven female on a set of bulls offered for appraisal ought to be the driving point home in most bull selection. Sure, there’s always new age, curve bending outliers in the population that capture the big money and heavy use, but bulls like these and any members of this cow family are good, safe, predictable property allowing for the guess work to be removed. As we write these Battle Cry footnotes throughout the sale offering, I feel as though we have only scratched the vinyl on the album. Again, another trio of bulls with power, shape, look, and genetic merit to enhance and compliment any type, any scope, and any size of an operation.

Son of a Biscuit (S.O.B.) is a past high seller and sale feature from the Werning program selected and owned by our neighbors to the Northwest, Jock and Brenda Beeson. We sampled the bull and like the results especially on this mating to Victoria. These brothers are wide centered, bold in their center body shape, with plenty of muscle spread over their skeleton. Big, good footed creatures that will cover some territory, get your cows bred, and sire the right kind of calves to market on any video or ranch direct sell opportunities.

Lot 39 is an Exclusive stud that is saturated with a multitude of proven cows both top and bottom side of his pedigree. Three potent, breed influencing cow families support this Simgenetic stud, Dolly, H25, and another foundation selection of Tom’s from the Dieter program 1780 (Sumo cow line of Faulkton, SD). His dam is very impressive in her own right as well as the full sisters to his mother. The long line of maternal prowess leaves no doubt of the long term value of longevity in this herd bull. An incredible look and pattern are evident as one evaluates the quality and kind of his front one third, with the needed depth and width of center body.

This Exclusive son is from a very productive Efficiency sired dam. We admire the quality and features this stud brings to the table. He’s one that is bigger and more extended with a great look and plenty of WDA. One would expect him to sire cattle with the same added look and style that he offers to the human eye and the daughters should have high retention value for the winning bidder. The right kind of stock with the right tools to get any program to the next level in quality.
What a genetic and maternal blend this moderate, dense package offers. He is an Exclusive from the Dream Catcher x Ram Nation bred dam that would have originated in the Colorado State program. He could be suggested as a heifer bull that should generate a set of replacement females that are right in their size and kind for any aggressive ranching operation. We would expect the steer progeny to be the feeding kind to work on the grid as well.

Having purchased bulls from across the United States and multiple breeders over the last 25+ years we are always looking for solid programs. The genetic improvement in Simmental is well documented and the marketability of the breed is outstanding. That said while improvement in performance numbers and bioeconomic traits is paramount our goal to add more power and “look” with those traits led us to Kearns in 2019. We selected Lot 85 a Franchise son with breed leading spread and API. While in the market for not only a calving ease heifer bull, we were also in the market for a bull that put more phenotype and structural correctness and power in a calf crop. After running with 35 head, serving cleanup duty after AI on heifers and our more genetically progressive cows I am happy to report that KCC1 Franchise 97F has met and exceeded our expectations. An easy keeping bull, with exceptional docility, he has maintained on forage and forage alone and this week the first calves arrived unassisted and with plenty of vigor. At a time when we have so many genetic tools, markers, and performance measures, I am glad we found a breeder and bull that comes with the phenotype and power that sires should possess to be called a herd sire. Looking forward to more many more calves in the seasons to come. - Matt Miller - Crockett, Virginia

Quite possibly one of the most under-utilized bulls the Simmental breed ever had in recent history was produced in the JS program of Iowa, known as JS Sure Bet. In the day he was the absolute outcross to Dream On and for sure a viable option for any program to use. He left his mark on the Werning program and sired a bull by the name of Wide Body for Joe Seale of Texas that has left daughters as well. Ask any of the Werning crew and they will tell you they wish they had more of those in production. The dam of this herd bull is a daughter of Sure Bet so make note of this one to look up when the videos are posted or if you make the trip to visit the ranch prior to or on sale day.

Here’s one from a two year old Cowboy Up daughter that leads back to a combination of Brilliance and Driver. He would be an outlier in terms of length and extension to the sire group. We like this burly, but yet smooth made herd sire prospect.
Moderate, dense built and from the maternal blend of Cowboy Up and Efficiency.

KCC1 EMPIRE 280E - Sire of Lots 59 - 64 The Empire sire group has been utilized since we sold him to Krebs Ranch. Ask Eldon about his calves if it feels necessary. Empire sons have topped the Krebs SimGenetic offering as well as our sale here at the ranch. The calves are born moderate to small and have extreme vigor with substantial, realistic performance from day one. This sire group blends both Dolly and the great Precision 2077Z, so there’s no guesswork, just proven results. We have the utmost confidence in this sire group for their ability to transmit real world traits and value at the end of the chain. Lot

What a way to initiate this group of brothers with the cow family influence of 1780. We consider this one to be just good stock from every angle. He’s definitely long, bold bodied, big ended, while being loose in his build and sure enough sound in kind.
We offer a different genetic twist on the bottom side of this critter with the influence of TNGL Grand Fortune. Grand Fortune is a genetic outcross sire that made some really good females along the way. If you crave one with width of center and dimension from every view, here is one for strong consideration.

It’s a pleasure to write about these Empire sons as they have so much good and real world advantage to them, like lot 61. This guy comes from a sure enough product of the program with the influence of a past high seller, Defiant, along with the potency of Barstow Cash and Driver, all in one. There’s no questioning this bull’s extension in body and frame with the complimentary smoothness throughout his existence. Big, good feet and an athletic build will allow him to get cows bred and contribute that needed punch to any program.
8085H is saturated with moderate to low birth weight genetics. We have used Empire on heifers with success. This one influenced by Lock Down and No Remorse could yield a much needed heifer bull prospect if you’re searching for one.

This deep, square built, long bodied Empire is from a very nice uddered and proven daughter of Lock Down.
The Driver daughters are definite, proven generators for any and all that have them. They are very productive with real world features and significant production. An Empire son with that supporting cast allows lot 64 to have all he has to offer and then some. Weight, length, and shape, with rancher merit.
A special Thank You to Eddie Bracken for his dedication and hard work, we couldn’t do it without you!

Wow, what a sure enough breeder bull. This stud combines cows that influence multiple programs throughout the nation’s Simmental cowherds. Cows like Dolly, Yetti 143Y, 7386, Lady Done Right, and the very first donor for Zach, Tiara, what a potent and diverse blend of numbers, power, depth, and femininity. His quality and presence exude all of that in which supports him genetically. This calf is so dense, so deep sided, and so square in his build; very good, top shelf livestock.
Another stout built, expressive shaped son of Fury that’s from the High Voltage and 1780 influence. Again, one that is stacked deep in some of the breed’s program building cow families.

Another son of the Broker x 1780 combination that has yielded some of the top bulls in this very offering! High quality with high end features in this suggested calving ease stud. Depth of side, bold rib shape, and plenty of beef cattle dimension leaves this one on several short lists for sure.

Here’s one that could make some baldy replacement females for those that desire that mark. A star-headed, snip nosed son of the low birth weight Dakota sire.

the Kearns Cattle Co. 32nd annual bull sale
the sons of double down
The W/C Double Down sire group is one that was sampled heavily in the past couple years. We feel that his reputation for unassisted, low birth weight stock with suitable post birth growth and performance will only increase his use in the years to come. Double Down sired the Reserve National Champion Bull in the recent Cattlemen’s Congress held in Oklahoma City that was exhibited by JS Simmentals of Iowa with the bull they call Double Up. As this young sire gets introduced to more of the breed’s finest, there’s no question that you will be seeing more of these calves by Double Down. This sire group, like the Dakota’s, are all out of two year old females and were unassisted at calving time.

One of the class act performers of this sire series would be this one from a High Calibre x Victoria bred dam. His dam’s flush was quite impressive in the replacement and bred pens, some of the absolute best females ever made on the ranch, undisputedly. We believe that you will like this one’s substance and build for your program.

One of the good ones carrying the influence of 1780 with the growth and performance enhancing High Voltage.
We have used terms several times throughout this book like density, substance, and volume and it seems repetitive. However, it’s true to form as this one comes from the influence of SAV Resource and Pilgrim as well.

Double Down clicked well on this SimGenetic dam. Here is a three-quarter blood Simmental that scanned with nearly an 18-inch REA.
Here’s one to take notice of late in the book for sure! He is a stout, three dimensional son of the proven Werning herdsire, JS Sure Bet. Vintage genetics that are hard to find, and the certain thing is when these cattle are as good as this one is, they always breed true to kind. Pay attention here.

Another one of “vintage” descent, by the proven female maker SVF Built Right. This sire group has influenced multiple programs through the years with much success. 541H is quite possibly one of the best direct sons of the sire group. He is incredibly well built, with a killer look and dimension when you view him from behind. These cattle are diversified in use but maternal in nature. The females this guy leaves behind will have a high retention rate without question.
We are sure that many will find this bull on sale day. He is sired by a very high-quality son of High Calibre from Victoria and out of a very nice daughter of Lock N Load. The goods are in the genetics.

The calves out of your bulls look great. In 2019 we purchased two bulls from your sale after following your program for several years. We are located in south east Washington State and have purchased bulls from all across the country. Not only did we get great bulls from you, we got great sight unseen purchasing experience from you and your sale management. From the multiple conversations leading up to sale day to the purchasing on sale day to the prompt shipping after to the follow phone call mid breeding season to make sure all was good. I would have to say dealing with Kearns Cattle was a great experience and I was impressed with how I was treated! Thanks again! Best of luck with this set of bulls!
