POWER GENETICS
We strongly believe in utilizing genetics that deliver profit to the bottom line. We take a balanced approach in our breeding program, always keeping the Red Angus breed strengths at the forefront of our efforts. We strive for a combination of low birth to high growth, fleshing ability, carcass quality and of course, docility. We wrap these important traits in a phenotypically pleasing package that is both functional and efficient.

president’s welcome As we enter 2022, there is many positive things happening throughout Missouri and the United States regarding the cattle industry and the Red Angus breed in general. The demand for Red Angus based females continues to soar throughout the country and Red Angus bull sales continue to gain momentum. Obviously, there are different ways to own these great females, you can “buy” them or you can “build” them by using a registered Red Angus bull. Red Angus continues to be the most popular animal used in crossbreeding programs throughout the United States & for good reason. Utilizing Red Angus bulls and/or females in conjunction with other popular breeds provides improved economically relevant traits. Why Red Angus…………. Red in color with bronze pigmented skin Naturally polled Improved heat tolerance & insect resistance. More resistant to pinkeye & sunburned udders. High quality carcass with excellent intra muscular marbling Red crossed red always breeds true. Red Angus carry no diluter genes and therefore avoids the grays that result when crossbreeding with blacks. Red Angus Females…………. Have strong maternal instincts Are highly fertile Provide excellent milk production Reach puberty at a young age Are renowned for their longevity Red Angus Bulls…………. Provides calving ease without sacrificing performance Large scrotal sizes with excellent semen production Provide the most cost effective way to assemble a Red Angus Cow Herd. In closing, I encourage you to purchase Red Angus genetics that have a proven track record of performance from any of the members listed inside this directory. Furthermore, if you have any interest in promoting the Red Angus breed within our state, I not only invite you but would also strongly encourage you to join our group. Regards, DAN LACY, PRESIDENT Missouri Red Angus Association

The Red Angus Association of America and Santa Gertrudis Breeders International have collaborated to provide a unique blend of maternal traits, adaptability, growth and marbling – all packaged with a heat-tolerant, red hided animal. The USDA process-verified program is the industry’s largest and longest running program, verifying genetics, age and source for over two decades. Allied Access delivers Age & Source Verification (ASV) without the Genetic restrictions of its predecessor, the FCCP.
Why Missouri Red Angus? An old cattleman saying is………….. ”You can move cattle North & West, but you can’t move cattle South & East.” Many of us have experienced the problems that can be associated with importing newly purchased cattle into our environment. What we’ve seen is a significant percentage of cattle that have not been raised on fescue will struggle once imported into the fescue belt & forced to perform in our environment,…………..”on the grass we love to hate”. Fescue toxicity often referred to as “Summer Slump”. Cattle experiencing fescue toxicosis may exhibit rough hair coats, heat stress, suppressed appetite, poor growth and reduced calving rates. Some animals eventually overcome this issue but many will not and will eventually be culled from the herd. While there are several tools offered to combat the problems such as mineral supplements, DNA testing, etc., their success rate has limited at best. The USDA estimates Fescue toxicosis costs the U.S. beef industry an estimated $600 million to $1 billion annually in lost revenue because of reduced reproductive and growth rates in cattle herds. Research on the subject has been done for years & in 2016, University of Missouri Extension geneticist, Dr. Jared Decker won a $2 million grant from the USDA to find genetic differences among regions. Decker & his colleagues are utilizing DNA markers to study the interactions between cattle DNA & the environment. The study is focused on DNA, hair shedding & tall fescue forage. When complete, the data will used to design region-specific EPD’s. The entire state of Missouri is situated within the fescue belt and since fescue was introduced into our region, Missourian’s have built their herds using genetics that have proven to be “fescue tolerant” livestock. This is one of the great advantages that the vast majority of our members have over breeders from outside the fescue belt……………. ”Bred In Fescue Tolerance” United States Fescue Belt

The red color of Red Angus has three distinct advantages: 1) Red is the most populous color of cattle breeds world wide. Red Angus provides a continuity and uniformity of color to any crossbreeding system. 2) Red is more heat tolerant than black and the bronze pigmentation gives a great resistance to cancer eye and sun burned udders. The majority of the world’s cattle are in areas that need heat tolerance, so the red color is a definite advantage. 3) Red crossed red always breeds true. Red Angus carry no diluter genes and thus avoids the grays that result when crossbreeding with blacks.

BREEDING SEASON SWING… AND A MISS? By: Dr. Jordan Thomas - Ex-Officio in Education I get a number of calls this time of year as operations plan to use estrus synchronization prior to the start of the breeding season. All too often, I pick up on something concerning that is not the reason for the call. For example, they might comment in passing that they will be hauling cows from one location to another or making a major change to the diet during the breeding season. These management “swings,” as I call them, can result in cows missing their opportunity to become pregnant. Pregnancy losses are relatively common in cattle and can occur at any stage of pregnancy, but most pregnancy loss occurs in the early stages. Early on and even mid-way through the breeding season, we have a lot of early pregnancies that are vulnerable to management. Changing the management of cows or heifers during the breeding season can be more disruptive than we might realize. Shipping cattle by trailer or pot-load can be very detrimental during the early stages of pregnancy. Research efforts in this area have not been extensive but what has been done points to potential for worrisome levels of pregnancy loss. One research study at Colorado State University several years ago noted about a 10% reduction in pregnancy rate when cows were transported between Day 5 and Day 42 of gestation. Day 42 is apparently not a magic number either; in another study, 6% of cows transported between Day 45 and Day 60 of gestation lost their pregnancies. More research is needed in this area to know the impact of the number of miles shipped or the amount of time off feed. Presumably, we might observe more pregnancy loss with longer hauls or if failing to practice good low-stress stockmanship when animals are penned, loaded, and unloaded. However, shipping pregnant cattle is clearly likely to result in losses, so try to avoid shipping cattle during the breeding season or early in gestation. Likewise, avoid movement of cattle immediately after breeding. In a natural service setting, we do not know when breeding occurred. In the case of artificial insemination, avoid moving cattle that day or the day immediately after. The stress associated with loading, shipping, and arrival at a new location can result in some elevation in the stress hormone cortisol, which can actually result in delayed ovulation and potentially reduced conception rate. If at all possible, have a plan in place so that movement of cattle is not necessary. If this is simply not possible and cattle do have to be moved, our current best advice is to move cattle somewhere between Day 2 and Day 5 after AI. I am not concerned at all concerned about standard cattle movement on foot, such as movement from paddock to paddock in a rotational grazing system. Longer cattle drives may be something to be slightly more cautious of, especially depending on weather or pasture conditions. With good grazing planning, you may be able to find ways to avoid needing to make these longer treks during the breeding season. If there is no way around it, however, at least pick a nice day and let the cattle take their time. Of course, a common problem for fall-calving cows is a decrease in diet quality during the breeding season. Most operations transition cattle from a diet of green, growing forage to a diet based around poor-quality hay. Be aware that this switch in diet composition could be problematic even when the supplementation provided is enough to meet the animals’ requirements. Increasing the starch/sugar content of the diet will result in a shift of rumen microbial composition as an adjustment to the new feedstuff. If this transition occurs slowly, it is unlikely to be problematic. However, a rapid swing could be more detrimental. If you can keep fall-calving cows grazing high-quality stockpiled forage through the breeding season, you are doing a number of things right.

In rarer cases, we may make the diet “too good.” For example, if you are planning to take advantage of very high-quality annual forages such as wheat pasture or cover crops during the breeding season, consider your grazing management carefully. Data are mixed as to whether the high protein content of these forages has a meaningfully negative impact on reproductive performance. However, cattle are selective grazers and, if simply turned out for set-stock continuous grazing, they will select an excessively high-quality diet until they have consumed all the choice parts of the plants. Managed grazing can help to ensure more uniform grazing and better animal performance. If manure is extremely loose, consider limiting the size of the total daily pasture allocation and making up the remainder of the daily ration with another feed, such as a reasonable quality hay. Limit grazing or a simple strip-grazing setup can be effective for achieving this goal.
2022 - 2023
Jordan Thomas is an Assistant Professor and State Beef Reproduction Specialist in the Division of Animal Sciences at the University of Missouri. This article originally appeared in Cattlemen’s News.
Turnout from a dry lot to pasture is another situation in which something that seems like a helpful transition can actually be detrimental. Research conducted at South Dakota State University several years ago found reduced pregnancy rates when heifers were turned out from dry lot to good quality pasture the day after AI. Although pasture forage quality was good, the animals went into negative energy balance. This could be partly because animals were readjusting to grazing, but the authors suggested that the main cause was likely a dramatic increase in overall activity as the animals walked every portion of their new pasture. To minimize this type of behavior, consider turnout into a relatively small pasture and practicing a good grazing rotation in the spring. Building poly fence to temporarily divide larger pastures into smaller paddocks is a very low-cost way to accomplish this. Finally, as we approach spring green, remember not to turn out cows too quickly. Spring overgrazing will set back forage yield by 40% or more for the entire year. That is something no operation anywhere can afford. Plus, that short green grass is excessively high in moisture and protein, and cows will struggle to stay in positive energy balance on that washy stuff. That’s definitely not what we want to have happen during the breeding season.

MAPLEWOOD ACRES FARM
Maternal Strength: Profit begins with reproduction and
maternal strength. Females that stay in the herd reduce replacement rates & that means you have more heifers to sell. We’ve built our herd around breeding females that excel in maternal strength. If you’re looking for replacement females that offer high performance from a fescue environment, we raise the kind that will work for you and build profit into your program!
