Consistency

(n): the quality of always behaving or performing in a similar way, or of always happening in a similar way.

We welcome you to the 2023 Profit Through Performance Production Sale, Despite challenging seasonal conditions, we are excited to offer you what we feel is the best and most consistent offering to date. Two derechos, summer drought conditions, extended sub-zero days followed by two-foot snowfalls can make one question why we are doing what we are doing. The answer is easy, it is you.

Twenty years ago, when we first started venturing into the Simmental breed, it was the people who pulled us in. Their drive to make cattle better year after year was something we wanted to emulate. We knew this would take time and a clear, consistent approach. Looking back at the sacrifices and decisions made these past twenty years, we are proud to say we are making cattle better.

This set continues to exceed our expectations. The cattle offered here have been bred for performance and longevity. Developing cattle that maintain good feet and legs, with good disposition, and backed by trusted performance data does not happen overnight. We have stayed true to our philosophy of utilizing a limited number of sires and genetic testing. Consistency leads to accuracy and in today’s marketplace, the value of increased accuracy pays big dividends.

Joining us again this year we have the Blagg Family- Kevin, Amber, Abby and Ryan, Hofer Farms- Travis, Sage and Ralstyn Hofer, and Melroe Farms- Steve, Barb, Tyler, Darah, Jacey, and Jaxen. We all know it takes a village and we are thankful for ours. Extra hands pushing cattle through the chute, expertise with a torch and clipper, and hot meals on picture days makes the work more manageable.

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday, March 5th at the ranch in Spencer, SD for our favorite event of the year. Give us a follow on Facebook for highlights and updates concerning the sale. If you are unable to attend, the sale will once again be on DVAuction.com. We encourage you to view videos of the offering online or stop by the ranch for a visit prior to sale day.

Sincerely,

Windy Creek Cattle

4 THE PROFIT THROUGH PERFORMANCE SALE

Weight and density pay as much as they ever have in the beef business. The word from the top of the administration among the U.S. beef packing corporations is that beef producers have developed an animal that is built with more red meat and usable product than ever before. Cattle in the industry are better than they were a decade ago in term of yield, conversion, and quality derived from genetics and enhanced with improved management and handling practices. Genetics that are found between the covers of this sale book would be some of those exact genes needed by any program in the business. The stock within the wire and pipe of the Windy Creek pastures and facilities are the kind loaded with density, performance, and yield. Jeremy has invested considerably over the years to ensure this product to be what he claims and documents it to be. He is a believer in what he has built and stands behind the product with integrity and grit that he has passed on to the next generation. The opportunity to do business with a youthful outfit backed by generations in the business will be on March 5, 2023 at the Windy Creek sale facility just north east of Spencer, SD.

The sires that roam the pastures for the operation are not your standard service sires, they are and will become household references. Bulls like W/C Dabo 703J, CKCC Capital 0625H, R&R Testament, and CKCC Relevant 639H are the young guns of the operation that will offer the blend of shape, performance, and overall industry merit. The studs that have left their mark on the prefix such as W/C Revolution 65G and the patriarch ES Surelock ZW15 will influence this sale offering yet today and years to come. This program is rising in popularity among the most discriminating seedstock providers within the SimGenetic circles and so the future is certainly rich in opportunity for the brand. Bulls like WINC Mahomes 975G will certainly be at the top of many A.I. lists for the spring breeding season for this year and beyond as those cattle are surfacing in the Werning Cattle Co program of Emery, SD.

Commercial cattlemen flock to the ranch the first Sunday of March every year. Some of South Dakota’s most aggressive and progressive cattlemen can be found on the bleachers or within the walls of the sale pavilion. The environment is very competitive as many of them know exactly what the WINC prefix can do for their program from a standpoint of performance, weight, and buyer acceptance when it comes time to market their product. They are also familiar with the customer service that includes personal delivery and a handshake that seals the guarantees offered in the introductory pages of this book. Jeremy Lehrman knows that any business is a people business and he is very good with his customer base and future customer base as well.

This business is a passion and an addiction for Jeremy and his family. They have always surrounded themselves with good people in everything they do and the guest breeders that are involved carry the same values and beliefs as the Lehrman clan. We promise you, that for all the great people in the seedstock business, that finding another pair of gentlemen like Jeremy and Cash Lehrman is a challenge when one speaks of hard work, grit, and vision. With that said, we invite you to join the Windy Creek village on March 5, 2023 and invite any inquiries about the offering to any of the Innovation Ag Marketing team members. Thank you for your time and interest in this wholesome, family operation.

A GUIDE TO EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in:

• Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.

• Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.

• Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.

• Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.

• Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.

• Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.

• Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.

• Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age.

• Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight.

• Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.

• Marbling (MRB): Marbling score.

• Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat.

• Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye.

• All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)

• Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)

$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well- conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org.

There may be some new sire groups represented in this 2023 edition of the Profit Through Performance but you can trust in the knowledge that the same industry leading performance you have come to expect out of a herd bull purchase from Windy Creek is as present as ever. This year we introduce the sons of CKCC Relevant 0639H to the offering, and we are extremely excited about the debut of this sire to the lineup. The ES Right Time FA110-4 son was our $45,000 selection out of the 2021 CK Cattle offering, and has matured into one of the most impressive mature breeding bulls we have acquired. WINC Relevant 292K is a purebred, homozygous polled and black growth promoter! He stems from a Hook’s Baltic 17B daughter that has proven herself with two other natural born sons that have sold over the past two years in this sale, in fact there is a long line of productive females in the maternal linage of 292K. WINC Franchise 002H sold to Brandon Riedl in 2021, and in 2022 Rob Maeschen purchased her Surelock 768E son. This may be her most impressive achievement yet, with a burly bodied, monster ended breeding bull that will add pounds, function and longevity all in one potent package.

The leading growth and performance son of the debutant CKCC Relevant 0639H class! A herd bull prospect that ties together several integral pieces to validate his promotion to stud sire duties. This purebred tested homozygous polled and homozygous black. He ranks among the most elite in the ASA registry when it comes to tabulations for growth and performance, turn to his EPD’s to find a top 10% WW, top 3% YW, top 3% CW, top 4% REA, and top 1% ADG figure. His real world data reflects the genomics with massive 114 weaning and yearling weight ratios from 858 pounds coming off his CDI Outlaw 292C dam and then 1579 pounds at a year! Undoubtably a stand out option for a cattleman that realizes the profitability of elite growth genetics.

A maternal brother to Lot 4, WINC Outlaw 015H was a highlight of the 2021 Profit Through Production that sold to the Long Family of Creston, Iowa. We look forward to following the impact 015H will have in the Long program, and were excited to see his first son go under the hammer this past February. Three full brothers that prove the most dynamic mating on the $45,000

W/C Miss Werning 638D to this point of her already impressive breeding career. The addition of ES Right Time FA110-4 to the exposure sires on 638D has caused an added degree of functionality and integrity to her repertoire, the results are cattle that we think bridge the gap between real-world performance cattle and cattle that have an ideal build and design. You may recognize a maternal brother to the trio as WINC Amigo 995G, who is now a featured member of the Vanhove Cattle Company herdsire battery, and one that has matured into one of the most impressive bovines you could lay your eyes on, his first daughter sold for $18,000 in this past edition of the Dakota Classic. Last year, another son of 638D highlighted the Revolution 65G sire group and found a new home with Lloyd Jones. With predictions for growth and the backing of generations of cow power, we present a set of elite purebred brothers that have the potential to change the trajectory of a cowherd.

WINC Mahomes 100K combines an incredible outline, robust center body cavity and wide based stature. His maternal pedigree reveals a W/C United 9656Y daughter, WINC Miss 624D that has been a surefire foundation of value added quality when combined with the Surelock influence. Four maternal brothers by ZW15 have sold prior to this year, and are now employed by Jeff Huss, Colin Johnson, Rob Maeschen and Brad Greenway, another one sells this year as Lot 20. Needless to say, this ¾ blood, homozygous polled and black stud is backed by heavily proven genetics, and is one of the most intriguing built, unique featured and dynamic purposed herd bulls that we raised this past year.

There are a handful of females in the history of our cowherd that have been instrumental in shaping its direction. Kappes Sadie T635 Y302 is most definitely one of those, a cornerstone type female that has made her impact well known here. In our 2019 Production Sale, Jackpot Cattle Company selected a full brother to this pair, WINC Farmhand 857F who in the short time he saw breeding duties proved to be a wise investment, producing well above expectations both for us and the Duxbury’s before his untimely passing. In our 2021 Production Sale, a maternal brother sired by W/C Foundation 2135E was the $65,000 high selling bull to Western Cattle Source and Werning, now known as WINC Next Generation 0111H. A pair of maternal sisters by W/C Fort Knox 609F were high sellers in the bred heifer division of last year’s sale, to average $14,250. Long story short, the potency of the Y302 female has proven itself as consistently as any, and this pair of herd bull prospects carry the quality that we have come to expect.

From a performance genomics standpoint 2106K is one of the leaders of the entire offering. This homozygous black and polled stud tabulates with elite top 1% rankings for yearling weight and average daily gain. Turn to the maternal side of his pedigree to find one of our most reliable sources of maternal power, a Lock N Load x C50P daughter.

CKCC Capital 0625H ET was added to the herd sire battery to inject added foot quality, structural integrity, longevity and milking quality of the cowherd. We think he has done exactly that with the small group of progeny we have after his first breeding season, you can trust in the fact that he saw more cows this next year! We are excited to get the heifer mates to 2115K into production! This one checks lots of boxes, with impressive growth, appropriate calving ease, being homozygous polled and black, of purebred status and designed with a very balanced phenotype.

Last February we made an investment in one of the most impressive bred heifers we saw sell in the year of 2022!

CHEZ Bobbi 0623H ET is a direct daughter of Ruby’s Currency 7134E and out of the legendary J6RA Bada Bing 1602B or “Bobbi” as she’s affectionately become known as. 0623H is a full sister to the $40,000 CHEZ KRIC Limit Up 9656G ET and is one of the biggest centered, largest scaled, flexible spined, incredible looking specimens in the business, one that you will be hearing a lot from in the future. With this first exposure she has yielded the goods with WINC/TCM Stunner 288K a herd bull prospect that carries the same look and feature that we admire about his mother. We think this one is pretty special, and outlines the phenotypic goals we strive for, bold and shapely, yet perfect structured and easy on the eyes. An outlier in every facet of superior beef production. An individual that is set to impress, because not often do animals come along like WINC Epic 213K that have the ability to supply each of the fundamentals required to be elite. His high performance is not just evident in his genomic predictions, but in his real-world data and measurements. He comes by his high quality, honestly with a maternal source stemming from the famed Kappes Sadie T635 Y302 in the form of a full sister to the pair of high selling Fort Knox x Y302 daughter’s that sold last year. This son of OMF Epic E32 has the desirable powerful body construction, stout features and big barreled phenotype that sets him apart in the flesh, then turn to his EPD profile to notice that his growth pattern is impressively curve bending. This homozygous polled creature is one of our proudest breeding accomplishments to date, we think he combines several elite pieces that promote him to stud duties and plan to use him as a tool in our breeding program going forward.

Pay attention to this Revolution 65G son, 283K stands out as a unique individual regardless of where you inspect him, at the scale, in the pen or on paper, and the addition of the legendary Lock N Load x C50P on the bottom side of his pedigree only helps his case. Phenotypically he is impressive, wide, deep and dense, built all upon a bone structure that reads with integrity. Good beef here, and would be as acceptable from a birth weight and calving ease standpoint as you will find in the sire group.

In this business we think a surefire way to add profitability to your calf crop is via consistency, and you may not find a better opportunity to provide your calf crop with added genetic consistency then an investment in one or more of the bulls tagged lots 64-66. This set of flush brothers are the result of combining the $120,000 W/C VIP 005G and a cow that continues to prove her nomination to the donor pen season after season, Glaus Jules B401. B401 has proven to click with several sire choices, including Profit, from which she raised a Supreme Champion Female at the South Dakota State Fair for the Dolieslager family and the Champion and $11,750 High Selling Simmental Female at the 2023 Black Hills Stock Show. Four of these brothers made for happy customers last year, and this group resembles the type and kind they represented, the consistency of this mating is surefire. You will find these bulls to be extra round in their middle third, explosive in their hind quarter, and fluid at the ground, they continue to gain steam with maturity and project to be the type that will sire progeny with balance, eye appeal and marketability.

Just two red bulls in the offering for 2023, but a pair that represent the division with immense quality, both are sired by a W/C HOC HCC Red Answer 33B son that caught our attention when the Long family promoted him, we don’t push hard to raise red hided stock but we were intrigued enough by their sire to try some! This purebred is impressive, being wide, deep and dense, all upon a bone structure that screams integrity. He has never skipped a beat, and has always been one of the boldest bodied bulls of the cohort. You can trace his pedigree back to a linage of cow family that has dug their heels in deep and been silent producers that always bring the goods to the weaning pen.

THE FEMALE OFFERING

LOT 81

After the big and powerful set of females we sold last year we had to wheel back the number of females we could market in 2023, however the top end quality on this hand selected set of females is just as impressive! We lead off the female division with a female that has a world of quality, and comes with the reliability of a cow family that consistently yields added value and quality. A perfect blaze faced ¾ blood that is more than just a pretty face, she tabulates with immense growth and carcass traits, ranking among the leading 5% of the registry for weaning weight, yearling weight, average daily gain, maternal weaning weight, and ribeye area. Genomically this is a herd bull generating machine! We admire her added substance and curvature, while maintaining a great look from the profile and high tying neck attachment. We truly believe that WINC Ms Statement 175J could be one of the most exciting genetic resources to sell this calendar year, if your intentions include securing a female to build a cow family around, whilst still generating a huge ROI then plan to be by Spencer, March 5th.

She will be accompanied by her first calf on sale day by the popular OMF Epic E32 that is respected industry wide for his ability to sire quality progeny that are accepted just as easily in a commercial setting as they are in the seedstock business.

WINC 1111J will be accompanied by her good-looking R&R Testament J155 heifer calf on sale day. This W/C Revolution 65G sired first calver is homozygous polled and has a EPD set that reads impressively for growth. Her dam is one of the Lock N Load x C50P daughters that caused the hard push for this mating, a mating that you will find very popular in the cowherd, and the maternal base for many of our most impressive bulls.

ALC Treasure C50P has been a cornerstone piece for our breeding program, and her legacy will long be felt by her female descendants.

There is no questioning the maternal build of this direct daughter of the legendary Pilgrim! WINC 887F is built with the upmost of quality and consistency in mind, she is long spined, extra square pinned, obtuse in her forerib and extra elegant fronted. We think her potential to raise incredible replacement females with intense femineity, longevity and maternal is surefire. This one has a long breeding career ahead, plan on watching her and her daughters build a cow family, starting with a Dabo calf this first year! We love the ones we already have on the ground.

Once you peer into the pedigree in support of WINC 860F you will begin to realize she comes by her impressive phenotype honestly, being bold in her rib shape, deep in the center of her body, with added bone density and squareness of pin set. She stems back to the WINC Dream Girl 119Y cow family that has been a reliable source of quality and cow power. A maternal brother to 860F sold in last year’s sale, and we think that she has the potential to raise herd bulls for her new owners, especially knowing that she will calve to Dabo this coming year!

WINC 845F is a maternal sister to one of our flagship donors, WINC Miss 624D, the mother of Lots 15 and 20 in the bull offering. 624D is responsible for raising the largest yearling weight sire in program history, and has a lineup of sons working for several of the region’s most performance driven commercial producers. We think that this big scaled, power cow has the potential to mimic her sister’s potency, and is just one breeding away from generating an elite herd bull. She is homozygous polled and has the performance driven EPD profile you would expect.

LOT 88

JBS Miss Boise 756F provides a distinct outcross to many of the pedigrees you will be familiar to here, but is built with the power and width that we like to see our females designed with. This cow has a proven record here at Windy Creek, her 2022 born Revolution son sells as Lot 62, a Surelock sired son sold last year for $5,500 and a daughter is retained in the cowherd. She is built perfectly for a mating to CKCC Capital 0625H.

An absolute show stealing phenotype, truly you could not paint one any better in our opinion, her build is indicative of the most elite type of production beef cattle regardless of color! A female that only finds herself drafted to the sale pen because she is still young and fruitful but we will never be able to unlock her genetic potential or market her progeny to the level they deserve. WEBR Expectation 7104 was a very successful show heifer for the Beninga Family, culminating her show career with the Supreme Champion Female banner at the 2019 Black Hills Stock Show just days after we had purchased her. She entered the donor pen here shortly after we acquired her and has worked to every mating we have thrown her way, with sons selling through this sale by W/C Foundation 2135E, CDI Authority 77X and then this years, Long’s Redwood H8 son selling as Lot 70. Two of her daughters provide the maternal power for Lots 71 and 72. The world is truly this one’s oyster, she has a lifetime of potential ahead, and has the versatility to perform at a high level whether you want to produce performance bulls, show heifers or cow prospects. She will have a calf at side by sale day and be ready shortly afterwards to reenter embryo transfer.

A big and bold purebred cow, that is homozygous polled and has proven to raise big and heavy progeny year after year. She raised the impressive WINC Revolution 173J stud that Lehrman Family Simmentals purchased last year for $9,500. This female is certainly stouter in her bone work, with a truly square pin set accompanied by strong spinal integrity, with depth, and power. Don’t miss the opportunity to add your own prefix to a W/C Dabo 703J calf, as we are very excited with what we are seeing with his early calves.

A true product of the program, this is the type that pay the bills at Windy Creek Cattle Company, in the flesh this one will surprise you by how dense and rugged she actually is, we suggest you take the time to find the video of this one because the longer you study her the more you’ll appreciate her quality. She has the power and body shape that makes it possible to raise performance bulls, along with longevity that ensures she has many productive years ahead. The commercial herd of Windy Creek Cattle Company is not large in numbers, so dedication to strict selection over the past 10 years has been crucial. A strong emphasis has been placed on basic production traits and a focus on longevity through feet, legs, udders and disposition comes first. By following this selection criteria, our commercial cowherd has evolved a phenomenal set of production cows. These females are bred to be tough and are required to survive and thrive through our cold, South Dakota winters. In 2023 we are offering three commercial females that come carrying pregnancies sired by our leading herd sires, W/C Dabo 703J, CKCC Relevant 0639H & CKCC Capital 0625H ET.

Miss Werning 638D was the high selling bred heifer out of the 2018 Werning Cattle Production sale at $45,000. It was sure a steep investment to begin with, but we thought she was one of the most incredible females we had laid our eyes on to that point and just knew that she had to relocate to our program, whatever it may take. That significant investment to begin with has evolved into one of our leading pieces of genetic power, as regardless of the mating we expose this W/C Executive Order 8543B daughter too, she has sourced us with leading herd sire prospects and jaw dropping females. Her breeding career began with an ES Surelock ZW15 son by the name of WINC Amigo 995G, who was purchased by Vanhove Cattle Company. He is one of the most impressive mature herd bulls you could ever lay your eyes on, and has received heavy use by Robbie after the first calf crop that yielded a $18,000 bred heifer in this past Dakota Classic. In 2022 we marketed another 638D son, this time sired by W/C Revolution 65G that sold to Lloyd Jones for $8,500 and in 2023 you will find a trio of flush brothers by ES Right Time FA110-4 that we are awfully excited about, they sell as Lots 12-14. We are offering the right to flush Miss Werning 638D to a buyer’s choice on mating, we will guarantee six embryos with an open top. She has been a very consistent embryo maker, averaging 6.8 on 10 IVF cycles, and has a track record for high conception rates into recipients. We look forward to discussing sire options with the buyer, realize that you will have access to our entire herd sire battery if you choose so!

W/C Revolution 65G is one of the most potent sources of performance that has a registration number in the ASA herdbook, the proof is in the pudding with the past two calf crops both here and at Werning’s. These cattle are extreme when it comes to adding payweight and pounds, they are big scaled, long bodied and wide. The second higher seller at $90,000 for Werning was a Revolution son, and our high seller in 2022 that sold to the Goeken family was also a Revolution son. They are cattle that are commercially accepted but have the added feature to interest seedstock producers, little semen has ever been marketed, and unfortunately he passed away last summer so inventory is limited, now is the time to secure yours!

62 THE PROFIT THROUGH PERFORMANCE SALE

A Word from our Customers

Since we started using Jeremy’s bulls several years ago, we noticed a drastic improvement in both the quality and disposition of our calves. We received the ultimate of compliments when an order buyer approached us after we sold calves this past fall and mentioned how nice they looked, he went on to ask what bulls we were using. Jeremy has always been accommodating and easy to work with.

Thanks to our Guest Breeders!
