Darvin’s Story Darvin Knapp grew up in Sioux Falls, S.D., with a great amount of time being spent on his grandparents’ farm located in Lake and Moody Counties of South Dakota. In 1979, he moved to Houston, Texas, to begin his career in the oilfields. While in Texas, he worked for Penrod Drilling, Clayton Williams Energy and then in 1994 began working for Chesapeake Energy, for whom he worked in College Station, Texas, Lafayette, La., and Oklahoma City, Okla. He remained with Chesapeake Energy until October 2007, when he resigned as the vice president of drilling to pursue other ambitions. Darvin and his wife of 30 years, Annette, have three children: Myranda, B.J. and Leticia; and nine grandchildren: Annabella, Marek, Kaleb, Kennedy, Addisyn, Brooklyn, Sterling, Alexander and Robert Jr. Ken’s Story Ken Davidson was raised in Waco, Texas. With his dad working for Kerr-McGee, the family transferred to New Mexico, and then again to Oklahoma City when Ken was in sixth grade. “Even though I was born in Texas, I’m an Okie,” he says with a smile. Ken fondly recalls the days he spent on his grandparents’ farm, as a child. “Because of that experience and what I learned there, I have a desire to be close to the land, again,” he says. “Our careers have allowed us to do it, later on.”

Ken is a proud alumnus of Oklahoma State University. He worked for Chesapeake Energy for many years, and retired in the fall of 2005. Ken and his wife, Jimi, have four daughters —Holly, Tara, Sara and Jordan; and two granddaughters—Ava and Adaline. e story of 74-51 Ken and Darvin met while working together for Chesapeake Energy in College Station, Texas, in 1996. A year later, they were both reassigned to Oklahoma City. e two have maintained their friendship and business alliance since. Darvin and Ken have always possessed a desire to get back to their agricultural roots with the purchase of a cattle operation. And in 2004, that dream became a reality with the formation of 74-51 Cattle Company. Darvin says the ranch brings back memories of childhood. “I always enjoyed being on the farm with my grandparents, and I wanted to get back to what I had always enjoyed as a young person,” he says. “I always wanted to acquire some cattle and get started in the cattle business.”
Ken located the property as he was driving on Highway 74 in 2004. He noticed the “for sale” sign on the property that is now the home place —at the junction of Highways 74 and 51, near Marshall, Okla. ey purchased that quarter of land, in addition to the registered Angus cows—originally owned by Larry Sebranek—that were on the property.
Larry was hired to manage and feed those 20–30 cows until the spring of 2006, when Willy Couch was hired as ranch manager. Steve Oliver was hired as a herdsman a few months later. Shortly after, 74-51 purchased 40 registered Angus cow-calf pairs from Oklahoma ranch Rolling R3 Ranch, and the growth of the ranch began. Today, 74-51 consists of registered Angus and SimAngus cattle, selling about 300 bulls yearly.
In recent years, the demand for 74-51 bulls has outgrown supply, manager Willy Couch says. erefore, 74-51 relies greatly on the support of cooperator herds across the country: those of Fenton Farms, Stigler, Okla.; Rusty Miller Herefords, orntown, Ind.; and Elmore Cattle Co., Waukomis, Okla. In addition, Travis Pembrook, Fairview, Okla., provides bull buying assistance throughout the year. “ese cooperator herds provide large volumes of quality cattle for our customers,” Couch says. 74-51 strives to provide quality service to producers at all levels of the production cycle as well. e ranch recently partnered with the Mason family to purchase Northwest Stockyards near Enid, Okla. “We felt it was an important piece to our plan to become an all-inclusive operation,” Darvin says. “We can go back to our customers who are buying our cattle—offering customer appreciation sales, and offering another avenue to help them market their cattle.” Ken says 74-51 strives to provide value to customers at all levels of production.
“Darvin and I are like T. Boone Pickens in that we’ve learned a fool with a plan is better than a genius with no plan,” he says with a laugh. “Our plan is to continue to improve our seedstock operation and improve our commercial herd. And, we hope to be in all spaces within the cattle businesses—from a producer all the way to providing beef to the retail market, at some point in time.” Darvin says he views 74-51 as a legacy he hopes to preserve for generations to come. “I view this ranch as something we can leave behind to our kids,” Darvin says. “We hope they’ll take as much pride in it as we do, and see the value in it—to be out working with their hands.” For Ken, he feels a responsibility to be a steward of the land. “I have learned honesty, hard work and integrity from people in rural areas,” he says. “Being good stewards of what God has made— that being the land. It’s more than just a personal goal; it goes back to being humbled by what God has created. And it helps keeps me in the place that God wants me to be.” Not only does 74-51 strive to care for their land and animals, they strive to provide quality for customers too, Darvin says. “When you look at the amount of time we’ve been in the business, and the reputation we’ve had for doing things the right way, I find great pride,” Darvin says. “We have a reputation for the quality of cattle—from the sale ring to the show ring. Everything we do is geared toward the customer—making them happy, and bringing them the best value for their cattle.”
Ken agrees. “I absolutely love it,” he says. “I love seeing the animals and trying to raise and nurture and engineer a product that the American consumer can trust. at with our brand on it, it’s as good as it gets—it’s second to none.” Darvin says the 74-51 crew works hard to maintain the trust and loyalty of their customers. “Everything we do goes back to the management and the quality of service we put out there,” he says. “At the end of the day, your product is only as good as your reputation. We want to make sure we’re doing the right things out there. “I hope they know when they purchase cattle from us—whether it be momma cows or calves or bulls—that they leave feeling appreciated,” Darvin continues. “We hope they feel they’re getting a great animal for a fair and marketable price. We’re not about taking advantage of our customers—we want them, as well as us, to make money.” Ken agrees. “When we say something, we’ll do it,” he says. “We care about their challenges, their families, their hopes and their dreams. When our customers have a problem, it’s our problem. We’re going to be right there, shoulder to shoulder with them.” Above all, Darvin says, 74-51 is committed to the cattle industry and its customers. “We don’t take anything lightly,” he says. “Just like with our oil careers—which we’ve been in for more than 30 years—we’re in it for the long haul.”

51 Dear Friends and Fellow Cattlemen, Welcome to the Annual 74-51 Red Dirt™ Bull Sale. This is the first time this event will be held at the ranch headquarters in their new facility. It has been a pleasure and an honor to have the opportunity to be a part of this inaugural event, and I would like to first extend a special thanks to Ken, Darvin, Willy, Ashley, Zach, Steve and the rest of the 74-51 crew for allowing me to assist them in marketing this outstanding set of bulls. This year’s lineup features an outstanding set of Angus, Simmental, SimAngus and Hereford bulls. Willy and the crew at 74-51, along with their cooperators, have assembled a sound, functional set of bulls that excel in phenotype and individual performance while maintaining a strong genetic base with numerical balance and diversity. The disposition of this group of bulls is worth noting as well. Zach and his crew have even taken the time to halter break a good portion of the bulls to ensure that they are easy to handle when you get them home. Whether you are looking for a herd sire to use in a registered operation, a sire to promote and sell semen on, or a bull to use in your commercial operation, 74-51 has a Red Dirt™ Bull that will meet your needs. These bulls have been developed the right way, with emphasis on maintaining soundness and maximizing fertility and longevity. 74-51 bulls are guaranteed for breeding soundness through their first breeding season. They are developed on pasture and grass, and wheat through the winter. Their success in soundness and longevity has led to these bulls becoming outstanding breeding pieces. No one understands more than they do how a bull affects their customer’s livelihood. For each bull that leaves 74-51, they want that customer to be satisfied. Everything they do is for the customer, and they strive to build lasting relationships. Evaluate the needs of your operation and plan to join us Friday, March 15th for this great event. Please do not hesitate to call me with any questions or if I can help you in any way. Pine Coulee Highbrow W185 Maternal brother to Lots 9–15
We would challenge anyone to find a more impressive and consistent set of flush brothers than the bulls selling as Lots 9–15. They are maternal brothers to Highbrow W185, a featured member of the Red Dirt™ sire lineup. Their dam is from the Blackcap family and sired by the established Pathfinder N Bar Emulation EXT. The second dam of these flush mates is from a noted embryo flush by the established Pathfinder Sire Traveler 6807 from GAR New Trend 780. The sire, Superior, is one of our favorites in the Red Dirt™ lineup. He has been one of the most widely used bulls in our sire battery this year, and we are expecting great things. The true power bull in our sire lineup, this young herd sire is loaded with red meat, muscle and bone.

74-51 McCoy 1516Y • Lot 16
Lots 16 and 17, McCoy and Hatfield, have been ranch favorites from day one. Both offer loads of muscle, style, shape, length and bone. Many people have seen these two brothers, and the verdict is still out on which one is better. One thing is for sure: they will be great breeding bulls. Don’t miss this opportunity to own a direct son of the elite Angus donor J&J Queen 414, who has been proclaimed by many as Northern Improvement’s greatest daughter. This female is proven to generate unparalleled “look,” quality, structural soundness and power. Lots 16 and 17 are full sibs to the 2010 Reserve National Champion Percentage Simmental Heifer, WLTR Lydia, and the 2010 National Western Stock Show Reserve Grand Champion Percentage Simmental Bull, WLTR Renegade, who was also named Grand Champion Percentage Bull at the 2010 American Royal. More recently, full sibs to Hatfield and McCoy include the Reserve Grand Champion Percentage Bull at the 2012 Simmental Breeder’s Sweepstakes, Shultz Black Onyx 12Y, who was also named Grand Champion Percentage Bull at the 2012 Tulsa State Fair, and also two heifer calves that sold in a Bushy Park Farms sale for $8,200 and $7,900.

The Queen family accounted for more than $68,000 of the sale gross in the J&J Dispersion and included J&J Queen 9064, sold for $11,250, and J&J Queen 9044, sold for $11,500 to Fred Schultz of Perkins, Okla., along with J&J Queen 613, sold for $10,400 to KB Cattle Co. of Wills Point, Texas. During her tenure as a lead donor for J&J and Price Farms, Queen 414 sold over 30 embryos to average over $840 each and allowed Price Farms to recover over $21,000 of their initial investment within the first six months of owning her. Embryos out of this prolific donor have sold for up to $1,200 apiece to many successful breeders across the country.

FF 74-51 Full Blast 221Z • Lot 21 Lot 21 is one of the special herd sire prospects in the entire offering. It is rare that you find a purebred Simmental with the kind of look and added power that Full Blast possesses. This is one that will sire the right kind to compete in the feedlot and the show ring. His sire, Wide Open, is one of the most unique Simmental sires to come onto the scene in recent history. He was a high seller in the Denver sale and was named Bull Calf Champion. His fresh genetics, power and athleticism made him a favorite among purebred breeders and club calf producers alike. His pedigree traces to X339U on the top and bottom, plus Black Irish Kansas, Black Mick and 600U. 51 Lot 36 traces to the foundation Jilt made famous in the OSU and Three Forks donor programs. This powerful son of Pioneer exhibits the success of the 6807 x EXT mating that resulted in his third dam. If you value phenotype in cattle, then Lot 36 should get your attention. It is rare to find the blend of neck extension and power that this bull offers. EXT, 6807, Pioneer…enough said!

FF PSI 800 Sire of Lots 63–74, Lot 122 & Lot 128 The sire of Lots 63–74 is one of the most impressive Angus sires we have seen in person. PSI 800 and his sons offer unmatched power and thickness in a sound, functional package. This combined with the cow families represented in the bottom side of the pedigrees of Lots 63–74 should allow them to sire markettopping replacement females and feed efficient sons.

Flying B Cut Above “Fat Butt” Sire of Lots 86–91
86
FF 74-51 Cut Above Y170 The sire of Lots 86–91, Flying B Cut Above, is fondly nicknamed “Fat Butt.” He is siring extra thick progeny that have the show ring look! They are winning big time in the Southern show circuits. Fat Butt is homozygous black and homozygous polled. He turned a lot of heads when he was displayed at Denver as a four year old. The sons of Fat Butt selling March 15th should work great to add some body and softness to Meyer pedigrees and some power to Dream On and Angus pedigrees.

The sire of Lots 98–100, “Strider,” is a halfblood Simmental that is made like a tank yet super sound. Seldom does a bull combine as much rib, volume, bone and squareness of hip with this kind of length of stifle, fluid movement and cleanness through his neck and lower one-third. “Strider” was named the Reserve Grand Champion Percentage Simmental Bull at the 2012 Fort Worth Stock Show.

RANCH TESTIMONIAL
Dr. Kevin Fenton, Stigler, Oklahoma I began my large animal veterinary practice in Southeast Oklahoma in 1995. My practice places an emphasis on cow/calf producers, and assisting them in decision making. Additionally, along with my brother, Chris, and dad, Fred, Fenton Farms was formed. Fenton Farms is an elite cow/calf operation in Stigler, Okla. I got to know Willy a couple of years ago as a seedstock producer, supplying bulls to customers in this part of the country. 7451 has been able to please our clients and producers in Southeast Oklahoma, in terms of quality and quantity. ey have also purchased our weaned calves and have taken them to the next level. ey put those calves in a position to not only satisfy the producer, but also to complement the cattle we send to them. ey’ve been fair in purchasing our weaned calves, carrying them to breeding age.
e management of 74-51 places their goals and objectives on the customer. ey provide professional services before, during and after the sale of the animal. At the end of the day, they’re doing what we’re trying to do: provide a product that can excel in performance and efficiency, either from a maternal or a production standpoint. 74-51 has been good at meeting the needs of a diversified group of producers, with different goals and objectives. If you polled the producers who purchase animals from 7451, I don’t think you’d find one that would tell you that 74-51 doesn’t back up their animals 100 percent. To sum it up: the honesty, integrity and professionalism that 74-51 displays is incredible. A lot of people say they back their cattle up, but the management of 74-51 absolutely does!
At 74-51, we are not afraid to bring new ideas into establishments, nor are we opposed to bring back
OLD-STYLE TRADITIONS. 56

Recently, 74-51 entered into a partnership with the Mason family, Ringwood, Okla., on the purchase of Northwest Stockyards, formerly known as Winter Livestock of Enid, Okla, and Northwest Cattle Feeders of Ringwood, Okla. With this purchase, the 74-51 crew desires to provide its customers with another avenue for marketing their genetics. Northwest Stockyards is managed by Trever Mason; with brother Lance and father, Kirk, managing the cattle operation. Cousin Otis Munkers serves as vice president of operations. e Mason family has a strong legacy of sale barn experience, beginning with their grandfather and father, Pat Mason, who worked in the sale barn business for over 30 years. “My dad and granddad both had a passion for it,” Trever says. “We grew up in those alleys, and as a result have a great passion for cattle and the livestock industry too. Once it gets in your blood, you’re hooked.” e Mason family began conditioning cattle in the early ’80s and to this day maintains Northwest Cattle Feeders, a feedlot 18 miles from the sale barn, available for 74-51 customers as well. e sale barn, with a sale-day capacity of 10,000–12,000, was built by the Winter family in 1993. In March 2011, the Mason family came to a mutual agreement to purchase the facility, with
the partnership of 74-51. Trever says he views the sale barn as a chance to continue the family legacy of sale involvement.
51
Willy Couch, 74-51 Cattle Company manager, says his hope is that 74-51 customers can reap great rewards from the partnership.
“We boys all have kids, and we want this to be a family business,” he says. “My granddad’s legacy in this industry is important to me. Each of us has different strengths—we have cattle people and ‘people’ people. We have what it takes to be successful, and we all have a stake in it.”
“We can gather a lot of weaned calves in the fall, and help our customers get top dollar,” he says.
Trever says the Mason family desires to be involved in the community and to earn the respect and trust of their customers. “We realize trust doesn’t come easy, and we’re determined to earn it,” he says.
“We try to sell our best products—our best bulls—to commercial producers,” he says. “One of the reasons we got into the Northwest Stockyards was to provide our customers a service and a market they can count on 52 weeks a year.”
Northwest Stockyards is located in the heart of wheat pasture country and is arguably one of the nicest facilities in the state of Oklahoma.
In addition, Trever says, the Mason family feedyard, Northwest Cattle Feeders, can prove to be a great resource for 74-51 customers.
Trever says he believes this combination can greatly benefit customers of 74-51 Cattle Company.
“e freight is cheap, as it’s only 18 miles from the feedyard to the stockyards,” he says. “We can buy the cattle at the stockyards and condition them for a while at the feedyard, or in many circumstances we can condition them prior to selling them at the stockyards, providing extra pounds, which means added value. It’s nice having both facilities available to our clients. It gives us an opportunity to add value on both ends of the spectrum.”
“With seedstock producers and customers located all across the country, we can bring them together for special sales and commercial cattle markets, which will benefit everyone involved,” he says. “And, during our weekly Tuesday sales, 74-51 commercial cattle that are marketed through the sale will be promoted as being 74-51 seedstock. And when they start performing for buyers, the prices should reflect that.”
74-51 Cattle Company co-owner Ken Davidson says he believes this partnership can provide additional benefits for 74-51 customers.
