A Word About Numbers
Before we had EPD’s, a sharp eye was the best tool a cattleman had. A big-topped, thick bull increased dressing percent. An easy fleshing bull increased marbling. The individual performance was extremely meaningful and cow families helped increase predicatibily. Then came EPDs. Now we have a lot of information! Maybe so much information, we can easily get confused. How many things, can we factor into our bull selection process? How many things should we? Each of us need to make that decision individually and like everything else, hindsight will ALWAYS be 20/20. We are a little different than some Red Angus breeders. Good or bad, right or wrong, we work extremely hard to evaluate and mate our cattle phenotypically first, genotypically second and always strive to balance the two. Structural correctness, muscle, rib, volume and capacity, length and depth of body, good feet and legs, trump extreme EPDs in our operation. Individual Actual Performance means more to us than Estimated Progeny Difference. In describing our breeding philosophy to you, the point I want to make is this; I think we are going the wrong direction if we make our bull selections based ONLY on EPDs. You can build a house with a hammer but its a much better house if you use every tool in the box. We would enjoy visiting with you before the sale to help you find the right bull that you need based on your goals and the direction of your program. Let us know what we can do to help you.
The Cattlemen’s Red & Black Angus Monday, March 12th, 2012 at 1pm Bull Sale Lincoln Cty Fairgrounds North Platte, NE Welcome to the Cattlemen’s Bull Sale, Congratulations! It appears to us that this may be the best time in the history of beef production to own cows. Owning cows also means you survived the temptation to reduce or disperse your base cow herd. Your fortitude is paying off and according to several industry outlooks it will be, at a minimum, three years before the calf crop increases, four years before fed production increases and five years before beef production increases. Profitable years ahead with the cow-calf man in the drivers seat! Now is the time to maximize those profits with your bull selections this spring. Your bulls account for 50% of your calf crops genetics, more if you keep back your own replacement females and now is the time to make sure your bull battery is hitting the mark in all areas. With that said, we invite you to attend the Cattlemen’s Bull Sale to see the “Next Generation of Genetics” that our bulls offer you! Our breeding focus remains on the cowman who sells pounds for a living and does it as efficiently as possible. We strive to produce bulls with performance, maternal traits, fleshing ability, fertility and structural soundness. Many of the bulls are from our E.T. program, are full sibs to the females offered in our fall female sale, out of our elite set of donor cows. The balance of the bulls are A.I. sired by the leading performance bulls in the industry! Genetically, this set of bulls offers outcross genetics that have the industry talking, on top of proven pedigree cows that have set the standard for balancing phenotype and genotype. This truly is an outstanding set of bulls! We stand behind those words and will be retaining 50% semen interest in all bulls selling. This offering of “Next Generation” bulls can fill the needs of the most discriminating cattleman and we have something for everybody. The Rock Star calves are heavy muscled, big ribbed calves that pound the scales at weaning time. The Cowboy Cut bulls will give you excellent replacement females and Jackhammer hits the mark on carcass. We have a group of Sim-Red Angus bulls, from our good friends at Mann Ranch, sired by Wide Load who covers all the bases from performance to carcass. The Black Angus offering is solid, with calving ease, performance and carcass bulls. The bulls have been developed on a practical, high roughage ration and are designed to work in your environment. We stand behind all the bulls with a first year breeding guarantee and service that is second to none! The bulls have been semen tested, had carcass ultra sound scans and evaluated for breeding soundness. The bulls are ready to go to work! We will be retaining 50% semen interest in all bulls unless otherwise stated in the footnotes. We are sincerely grateful for the confidence you have placed in us and our programs and look forward to serving as your seedstock source. We are committed to our customers to provide genetics that will enhance your profitability and livelihood in the cattle business. If we can be of assistance in anyway, do not hesitate to contact us. Come early sale day and join us for lunch. We look forward to seeing you and will work hard to earn your business! Thanks, Dan, Cheryl and Cassie Johnson

The first big calf crop of Rock Star calves have solidified this bull as a true beef machine! He stamps his calves with the same bold features that he possesses, muscle, middle and moderation. His offspring come in an easy fleshing, eye appealing package that turns the heads of many good cattlemen. Rock Star is the sire of the 2012 National Western Grand Champion Pen of Three Bulls. They were a big attraction in the Yards in Denver and were praised by the judge for their uniformity, muscle and rib shape. The Rock Star bull calves in the Cattlemen’s Bull Sale are a stout set of bulls that have exceeded our expectations every step of the way. His outcross pedigree makes him a unique breeding piece for several breeders and his outstanding performance adds to the marketability of his offspring. His dam has a picture perfect udder and the Rock Star heifer calves were a big hit at the Red Legends sale in September as eight Rock Star females averaged $7,300. After seeing the progeny in Denver, Genex has leased Latin America and South America semen rights. We suggest using Rock Star on bigger framed females that need to add muscle, width and dimension. The semen packages offered in this sale will be the only semen available for the Spring 2012 breeding season. They say the great bulls make son’s better than themselves. We say this bull may be better than his sire. SLGN Young Gun is a moderate, smooth made replica of his daddy and stems from the best cow family in the Red Angus breed. The combination of these two pedigree’s makes SLGN Young Gun one of the best “Next Generation” bulls to sell this year! As an eight month old calf he claimed Reserve Grand Champion honors at the Iowa State Fair. He later won the calf division at the NAILE in Louisville and then was the lead bull in the 2012 NWSS Grand Champion Pen of Three. Young Gun combines muscle, rib shape and style in an easy fleshing moderate package. His individual performance is outstanding beginning with a moderate birth weight of 73 then posting 791 at weaning and 1308 at a year of age. His scan data shows a good ribeye with high marbling and his fertility is outstanding. His dam is the famous Blockanna 807, who is the breed’s first Triple Crown winner, being selected Grand Champion Female at Louisville, Denver and Fort Worth. Her ability to produce outstanding females is well documented and her progeny are sought after by many Red Angus breeders. This is a great opportunity to invest in a young bull that will pay back big dividends. Selling Choice of Spring or Fall Breeding Possession and 50% U.S. Semen Interest. LOT 3. Yes-Man was a member of the 2012 Champion Pen in Denver and certainly won the affection of many good cattlemen. This guy follows the moderate easy fleshing look of his sire that when combined with the maternal qualities of his dam, you have the complete package! The Blockanna 807 cow has set the bar in the Red Angus breed for phenotype and productivity. Her daughters are flatout awesome and we believe this flush of Rock Star bull calves are her greatest sons to date!

LOT 4 is the third member of the Champion Pen in Denver and as you can see he holds his own against two very good bulls. His Grand sire, Doc Holiday is a past Denver Champion and his dam has a MPPA of 102.7. Nice set of EPD’s with a big birth to yearling spread adds to his genetic value and take a look at his milk and total maternal numbers. This guy has all the tools to be a herd sire!

LOTS 3 and 5 are full flush mate brothers to LOT 2! LOT 5. The only way to describe Yeah Boss is that he is truly a beast of an animal. This is the largest framed Rock Star son in the U.S. posting a 6.5 frame score, he definitly took after his mother in that regard. That could be a huge advantage from a marketing standpoint to his new owner. Boss is as long as a freight train, big boned, thick, and just plain fun to look at. He posted huge performance numbers at weaning, yearling and scanned big RE and IMF as well. This bull didn’t fit our Denver pen because of his frame. However, his frame is what sets him apart from his brothers and to me that could be a huge asset going forward. You want to add pounds to a calf crop, buy this bull!

She has been noted by several top breeders as one of the best females in the breed. We would have to agree. The Cowboy Cut sired calves on the ground, half sibs to these bulls, are something very special. We have always maintained the philosophy that great herds are built around great cow families and have worked very hard to breed and develop some of the top cow families in the breed! Many of the bulls in this sale are son’s and grandson’s of the greatest and most proven foundation cow families in the Red Angus breed. The Eleanor cow family is known for producing great bulls such as LCHMN None Better and King Rob. SLGN Rock Star 116Y is proof positive that great genetics pass through generations. Their sire, Indeed, is one of the most noted female producers in Canada and their dam is none other than the dam of Red Six Mile Sakic. Genex has sold a lot of semen on Sakic, not only in the U.S. but around the world! We purchased this flush for females and have two full sisters to these bulls that will be future donors in our herd. The genetics offered in these two lots are very rare. You don’t get this kind of opportunity everyday. Get your gun loaded and ready to fire come sale day or kick yourself all the way home! If you’re looking to raise Red Angus females, the kind that everyone is looking for, these bulls are a must purchase! It is genetics like this that have led us to decide to keep 50% semen interest in all the sale bulls! EPD Averages for Non Parents under 2 years of age:

Res National Champion Female Sired by Cowboy Cut
The first U.S. born calf crop of Cowboy Cut made a huge splash on this falls sale and show circuit! Several daughters topped sales for breeders including: Solution Genetics at $20,000, $13,000 and $12,500, C-Bar in Kansas high selling heifer at $10,500, Lautenschlager at Bet on Red’s at $7,400 and several others. The Cowboy daughters tore up the tanbark as the Reserve Grand Champion Female at the Iowa State Fair, Louisville and Denver was a Cowboy Cut daughter owned by Gabe Gibson and Solution Genetics. The North Carolina State Fair Champion Female, owned by the Banfield Family and the South Carolina State Fair Champion Female, owned by the Campbell Family were both Cowboys. J6 of Nebraska won several divisions, as did Pam Hanson of South Dakota and the Van Vliet Family of Iowa with their Cowboy Cuts. Cowboy Cut also won the Jr. and Sr. Get of Sire at both Louisville and Denver. The National Grand Champion Female in the Junior Show at Denver was a Cowboy Cut owned by Gabe Gibson. All that in a first calf crop makes you wonder what is yet to come! Many noted Red Angus Breeders have said Cowboy Cut may be the next great female producer in the breed! The first daughters are calving in Canada this spring and all reports are the udders are excellent and they are great mothers. His pedigree is stacked maternal, with some of the best females in Canada in his genes. We recommend Cowboy Cut for moderate, thick made females that need added length, structural correctness and maternal strength. The semen packages offered in this sale will be the only semen available in the U.S. for the spring 2012 breeding season. Selling 10 packages of 10 units and 10 packages of 5 units, high bidder has the option to take as much as they like.

Well this will be a first. We have never sold a bull that was not at our sale but when Genex saw Yardmaster on display in the Yards at Denver, they were determined to get him in stud. Genex has leased Latin and South America rights. He went from Denver to Billings to begin collection due to the volume of semen they plan on collecting. Yardmaster is, in our opinion, the best Cowboy Cut son in the United States! He has a huge hip, big top and great rib shape, all carried on a big foot and strides out like a cat! This “Next Generation” bull is backed by one of the strongest cow families in our herd. His dam SLGN Tess, is our two-time National Champion Female, winning as a calf in Ft. Worth and as a bred in Billings. Sired by High Capacity, Tess is out of the first Red Angus female we purchased, Meado-West Bailey. Bailey is a TKP Bodacious daughter and is the dam of SLGN Regulator. Regulator was a herd sire for Solution Genetics and Nordlund Stock Farm of Minnesota. Proven pedigree without a doubt! While on display in Denver, Yardmaster drew the attention of Simmental, Maine, Angus and Club Calf breeders. He has the genetics and phenotype to be a big volume semen seller! We anticipate this may be the son of Cowboy Cut that succeeds his sire as the go to bull for producing outstanding Red Angus females! Selling choice of Fall or Spring Breeding Possession and 50% U.S. semen interest. Solution Genetics is retaining 50% Breeding Possession, 50% U.S. Semen Interest and 100% International Semen Rights. SLGN Weston 903W- Maternal Brother to Lot 22 I have liked this bull since the first time I saw him. Yager 101Y was a member of our Denver Cowboy Cut pen and made a lot of friends in the Yards. This bull has an extremely nice front third with good neck extension, fills out his forerib and carries his depth all the way to his flank. He is a big time heifer bull, that came small and weaned over 700 pounds. Great cow family on the bottom!

Another Lightning out of a full sister to Piepers Advance 121R bull that showed the Red Angus breed what muscle was all about. Good individual performance and scan data ensures the length and muscle of this bull will be passed on to his offspring. This bull can change a lot of cow herds and certainly will impress the feeder buyers at the sale barn!
