Dear Angus Friends and Fellow Cattlemen: Welcome to the Ninth Annual “Denim and Diamonds” Sale and the second consecutive “On the Hill” in Denver. This unique event is the result of the collective efforts of forwardthinking Angus seedstock producers. Members of the Denim and Diamonds Group have again worked together toward the common goal of assembling an offering of elite Angus genetics that combine performance with excellent phenotype to become competitors at any level in our industry. The genetics and EPDs represented on both sides of these pedigrees are second to none, as is the visual quality of the live offering. Phenotypically, the 2011 sale offering is the strongest to date, and quality is present throughout. As the name suggests, “Denim and Diamonds” is a unique blend of two segments of the Angus industry. The 2011 Denim and Diamonds Sale combines the influence of the breed’s most valuable and proven performance families with the deepest and most elite show prospects and herd sires in the country. The embryo matings and heifer pregnancies feature cutting-edge genetics that are sibs to some of the most popular champions and herd sires in the industry. The focus of this year’s sale is on quality, not quantity, and I think you will find that, like a diamond, each lot is distinctive in its own way. I encourage each of you to evaluate your own situation and your breeding goals, and on Thursday, January 13, please join us at 2:00 p.m. following the Angus Junior Show in Expo Hall 1 to view the cattle and enjoy food and refreshments, and then at 5:00 p.m. in the National Western Beef Palace Auction Arena to take advantage of the knowledge and cuttingedge efforts of these breeders and their programs. Whether you are seeking your next herd sire, donor or your next champion, you will find it among this exceptional offering. If I can be of any assistance, please let me know. Sincerely,
Matt C. Sims MCS Auction, LLC

Valerie 13X is a spectacular show heifer with a tremendous future! Visually, this Big Daddy daughter offers a flawless profile with depth of rib, a powerful hip and exceptional length of neck. One better to be leading than following! A full sister, K Bar D Valerie 15W, was the 2009 Reserve Junior Heifer Calf Champion at the Oregon State ROV Show and a class winner at the 2010 Reno Western National ROV. On the bottom side of the pedigree, 13X’s dam is sired by none other than “Big Jim” (LCC New Design G054L), the highly popular 878 son who reigned as senior herd sire at K Bar D for many years. The grandam is sired by K Bar D Krugerrand Valentino, whose dam is none other than the ever-popular Reno Western National ROV Champion Female K Bar D Krugerranda Pride. In K Bar D’s 2009 Oregon State Fair ROV Champion Best Six Head, five of the six were from “Big Jim” daughters, including the Junior Heifer Calf Champion, Reserve Junior Heifer Calf Champion (a full sib to Valerie 13X) and the Junior Bull Calf Champion. Combine this maternal strength with the power and consistency of her sire, BC Big Daddy, and his maternal siblings BC Marathon and BC Lookout, and you can envision the success this investment will bring both in and out of the show ring. • Sells open.

If you are looking for a young donor to add muscle and bone to your Angus herd, or if you are looking for a base donor for a SimAngus or MaineTainer program, 8988 is the perfect fit. Her May heifer calf is being retained by Green Angus. • Selling one-half interest that will include one-half interest in both her embryo production and natural progeny.

Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to purchase genetics from this elite donor who has been proclaimed by many as Northern Improvement’s greatest daughter, J&J Queen 414. 414 is proven to generate unparalleled look, quality, structural soundness and power. She produced the 2010 Reserve National Champion Percentage Simmental heifer, WLTR Lydia, and the 2010 National Western Stock Show Reserve Grand Champion Percentage Simmental Bull, WLTR Renegade, who more recently was named Grand Champion Percentage Bull at the 2010 American Royal. 414 served as the cornerstone donor for J&J Angus in Oklahoma until their dispersion in May 2010. The Queen family accounted for more than $68,000 of the total gross in the J&J Dispersion and included J&J Queen 9064, who sold for $11,250, and J&J Queen 9044, who sold for $11,500 to Fred Schultz of Oklahoma, and J&J Queen 613, who sold for $10,400 to KB Cattle of Texas. During her tenure as a donor for J&J and Price Farms, Queen 414 has sold over 30 embryos to average over $840 each and has allowed Price Farms to recuperate over $21,000 of their initial investment within the first six months of owning her. Queen 414 is made for those who enjoy looking at great ones, and these matings by 3C Macho and BC Lookout will produce that same kind. • Selling five frozen embryos. Offered by Spruce Mountain Ranch, LLC The dam of the Lot 31A and 31B embryo matings is the result of the successful carcass blending of B/R New Design 036 with the $100,000 SandPoint donor KMK Rita J352, who combines a progeny birth ratio of 95 with a progeny weaning ratio of 104 on two natural calves along with a progeny IMF ratio of 106 and a progeny ultrasound ribeye ratio of 103 on 27 head to rank as one of the top Ribeye EPD proven cows in the Angus breed. A pregnancy from the grandam of these embryos was an $18,000 feature of the 2005 Ray-Mar Sale, and maternal sisters to the dam of these embryos include the $26,000 top-selling bred heifer of the 2004 Davis on the Highlands Sale, the $35,000 top-selling yearling heifer of the Davis on the Highlands Dispersal and the $22,000 top-selling fall yearling heifer of the Eaglestone Dispersal. The maternal third dam of these matings is the anchor of the Rita family, GAR EXT 614, who has become one of the top five females in breed history in total sales income. The sire of Lot 31A, SAV Bismarck 5682, is the most unique and popular outcross calving-ease sire in the Angus breed and is the 2010 Roll of Victory Show Sire of the Year. He has achieved widespread popularity for his impressive low birth weight progeny who offer exceptional muscle shape, volume, balance and style. Bismarck is well proven and offers superb EPDs in all traits of magnitude—calving ease, performance, milk, scrotal and carcass quality. He sired the top selling sire group of bulls in the record-setting 2009 SAV Sale, including SAV Birthstone 8258, featured at the Select Sires AI Stud, and SAV Brilliance 8077, featured at ABS Global. His heavy milking dam has 15 sons in progressive herds and three sons enrolled in major AI studs. The prolific grandam of Bismarck is the high income producing cow in SAV history. The sire of Lot 31B, Buford Blue Stem 9974, was the top-selling $50,000 half interest selection of Limestone, Mytty Angus Ranch, Spruce Mountain Ranch, Hartley Angus Ranch and Evans Farms from the Fall 2010 Buford Ranches Sale. Blue Stem is a phenotypic favorite with the muscling, base width and overall character and quality of his famous sire. This bull combines a modest individual birth ratio of 94 with individual weaning and yearling ratios of 107 and 103, respectively, along with individual IMF and ribeye ratios of 109 and 114, respectively, from a dam who combines a progeny birth ratio of 95 with a progeny weaning ratio of 104 and progeny IMF and ribeye ratios of 108 on five calves.

D 110 is the dam of the popular Genex sire BC Eagle Eye 110-7, who was among the most popular bulls in the yards during the 2009 National Western Stock Show. This BC Lookout son drew a lot of attention for his correctness of build, powerful look and moderate frame— qualities which he transmits to his progeny in the form of rugged made bull calves and easy keeping, fault free daughters. BC Pure Pride D 110 is a maternal sister to another popular Genex sire, BC Matrix 4132, who, along with the remainder of the Pure Pride family, is known for boosting performance and adding rib shape and depth along with unparalleled keeping ability and maternal strength. Pathfinder Dam CAF Pure Pride EXT 99 is an excellent example of longevity and efficiency, as she served in the donor program at Conley’s until 14 years of age and posted progeny ratios of BW 11@97, WW 11@107 and YW 9@108. The sire of this mating is an exceptionally well balanced, young calving ease sire whose sire is a 6807 x Right Time back to the dam of EXT. Classic 385-7’s dam is a full sister to BC Lookout. It would be hard to come up with a better cowman’s pedigree! • Selling a guaranteed heifer calf pregnancy due 9/22/2011.
