Angus Friends,
Combining over 180 years experience breeding quality Angus seedstock!
Welcome to our 34th Genetic Opportunity Angus Sale. We are especially excited about this year’s sale offering. The summer has been great, the crops and grass still look lush and good Angus cattle are still some of the best property in all of agriculture. Please take the time to study this catalog and analyze the quality and breeding information in this offering. These cattle represent years of mating decisions that are designed to make a profit for our valued customers. I can speak for all the sale participants when I say that Angus cattle are our passion. We eat, sleep and breathe Angus 24/7, and I think when you study the pedigrees and photos in this catalog, you’ll agree that this offering is full of opportunities to make a profit. Our respective operations all use numerous tools available to add value and predictability to our genetics, such as AI, embryo transfer, performance testing and collection of Genomic Data so that your purchases will have a higher probability of being a success in your herd. We are breeding cattle for balanced EPD traits, and we’re constantly striving to better our data in all of the economically important values. We firmly believe that by striving to produce cattle that not only are pleasing to the eye but have high accuracy EPD numbers, we can help enhance the bottom line for our customers. All of the participants in the Genetic Opportunity Sale participate in central bull test sales to evaluate our cattle against others around the country in an effort to make our own genetics better. With a combined total of more than 180 years experience breeding Angus, our herds have stood the test of time. We pride ourselves in knowing that this is a no-frills, no-nonsense sale where you can come and buy with confidence that these breeders will stand behind their product, and their goal is to help you to be successful in the Angus business. On September 8th, we’ll be selling a group right off the top of our 2018 heifer calves. They represent the freshest Angus genetics that we know of, and they are designed to make productive, long lasting cows for their new owners. An excellent group of young, up-and-coming cows that will be predominately AI bred for early 2019 calves that will offer numerous profit-making opportunities will sell. And finally, a beautiful group of yearling bred heifers will be selling mated to some of the most exciting young AI sires in the Angus breed. Plan to come early and visit with any of us about our cattle. There is nothing we would rather talk about. We’ll have a get-together with Angus burgers Friday evening and an awesome lunch prepared by my wife, Dawn, Saturday before the sale. We hope to see you sale day! Dear Angus Friends and Fellow Cattlemen: Welcome to the 34th Annual Genetic Opportunity Sale—one of the longest running Angus production sales anywhere in the United States. The longevity of this sale is a testament not only to the quality of the cattle but more to the quality of the people involved with these breeding programs. It is my honor to continue to be involved in their marketing. We are excited to bring you this outstanding offering in 2018. Grubbs Angus Farm and Les Craft Angus along with their repeat sale guest, Stewart Select Angus, have again assembled a set that illustrates the result of their combined experience in the purebred seedstock industry, spanning over seventy years and three generations—and their passion for the Angus female. These breeders consistently bring forth their very best. While the offering continues to present an outstanding group of open show and donor prospects, the demand for bred females in recent Genetic Opportunity sales has led the group to increase the number in that division. They are sharing some of the very top producers and young females in their respective herds. Angus GS or i50K DNA tests have been performed on all of the 2018 heifer calves and all of the Stewart females; not all of the DNA was processed in time to be incorporated into the EPDs in the catalog, so an EPD update will be available sale day with the most current EPDs. The success that Genetic Opportunity customers have had with past investments is testament to the depth and quality present in past events, and this year is no exception. These cattle combine performance with excellent phenotype to become competitors at any level in the industry. The bottom line is: Genetic Opportunity cattle appreciate in value. The genetics and EPDs represented on both sides of these pedigrees are second to none. The Angus breed’s most popular sires are represented here as well as an exciting group of females by the resident herd sires for each firm. Excellent show and donor prospects from power cow families and sired by breed-leading bulls will sell. Past junior customers have claimed championship honors in show rings across the region and at every level of competition. Whether you select a proven female or an open prospect, you cannot go wrong. You will find an excellent set of replacement females—either sold alone or on the side of their dams. If you are searching for a young donor, don’t overlook the select set of bred heifers selling, and be sure to check out Savor, the herd sire prospect that sells as Lot 1. I am excited to again be working with this progressive group of Angus breeders in the marketing of their cattle. Evaluate your own situation and breeding goals, and on Saturday, September 8th, take advantage of the knowledge and cutting-edge efforts of these breeders and their programs. Please join us Friday evening for food and refreshments while you preview the cattle. Feel free to contact me or any of the owners with your questions or comments. Sincerely,
SALE MANAGER Matt Sims

It has been several years since Dale offered his “Pick of the Bulls” Lot 1 feature in the Genetic Opportunity Sale, but this year he has decided to share his pick with you. Savor exemplifies the look desired by today’s judges. This January herd sire prospect combines the body type and structural base desired by all cattlemen with the profile, neck and clean sheath needed to find his way to the backdrop. Savor’s full sister, Grubbs Miss Rowena 67, was the top-selling selection of Jene Hicks & Sons, Covington, IN, from the 2017 Genetic Opportunity Sale. Dale believes there is tremendous potential in this descendant of the Grubbs’ foundation Rowena, D G Miss Rowena 74, and that Savor is among the best he has sold. The sire of Lot 1, Conversation, combines striking good looks with the EPD script of a multi-trait improver while offering an outcross pedigree combined with impeccable skeletal design and muscle shape. One of the most admired bulls in the Select Sires lineup, he is wide based and square hipped with tremendous depth of body plus a wide top and bold rib shape • Selling 2/3 interest and full possession.

Lot 5 offers a unique blend of angularity and power complemented by an outstanding numerical profile. The proven third dam of Lot 5 posted progeny ratios of WW 8@103, YW 4@113, IMF 13@101 and RE 13@100. Merle 293 offers a uniquely rare pedigree and stamps her phenotype in her progeny, as is evident in this granddaughter by Epic. A maternal sister to the dam of Lot 5, Craft Merle of 26-M293-R08, exhibited by Catherine Knebel, Winamac, IN, was Early Junior Yearling Champion, 2006 Indiana State Fair 4H Show; Class 35 second place, 2006 National Junior Angus Show; Grand Champion, 2006 Northwest Indiana Preview Show; and Champion Angus and Supreme Champion Female, 2006 Pulaski County Fair. Another sister to the dam of Lot 5 sold as Lot 1 in the 2017 Genetic Opportunity Sale, while other sisters to the dam of Lot 5 have sold to Robert Maher, Trent Cooper and Ryan Hall. The top-selling heifer calf in the 2016 Genetic Opportunity Sale, selected by Pollard Farms, descends from the same family as Lot 5. Ranks in the top 1% for YW and $F, top 2% for WW and top 20% for $W prior to genomic enhancement. 10 traits in her Angus GS profile are in the 25th percentile or better. • Sells open.
Note about GE-EPDs: Angus GS or i50K DNA tests have been performed on all of the 2018 heifer calves selling and on all of the Stewart females in the sale. Not all of the DNA was processed in time to be incorporated into the EPDs in the catalog, so an EPD update will be available sale day with the most current EPDs.
Craft Merle 293-959 — maternal granddam of Lot 5
3F Epic 4631 The sire of the lead lots in the open show and donor prospect division was the $50,000 selection of Express Ranches and Sitz Angus Ranch from the 2015 Three Forks Ranch Sale. Epic’s first calf crop dominated the 2017 Express Spring Bull Sale, where a son, EXAR Monumental, was the $80,000 top-selling bull from the 2017 National Western Grand Champion Carload of Bulls. led by another son of Epic. In the 2017 Big Event at Express, three bred heifers by Epic sold half interest for $100,000, with a fall yearling topping her age division at $97,500. In the 2017 Express Fall Bull Sale, a son, EXAR Gallant, was the $50,000 second high-selling bull. In the three 2017 bull sales at Express, 45 sons of Epic sold for an average price of $12,401. Among the top five sires for Yearling Weight EPD available from ORIgen as of this writing with both a Weaning Weight EPD and $Feedlot value index among the top ten, Epic’s unique and valuable elite $Weaned calf value index and Carcass Weight EPD combined with his double-digit Calving Ease Direct EPD and minus Birth Weight EPD plus his outcross pedigree made him one of the most popular sires at ORIgen during 2017.

Driving the science of better breeding There’s little room for error in the cattle business. Producers need the most advanced information to make smart selection decisions, and Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) provides it through genomic-enhanced expected progeny differences (GE-EPDs). EPDs that traditionally contained all pedigree, performance and progeny information now also include results from available genomic, or DNA, tests. Breeders who use genomic technology give buyers access to AGI-generated GE-EPDs that provide: Increased predictability and decreased risk for young and unproven animals due to enhanced accuracy of EPDs Better characterization of genetics for difficult-to-measure performance traits (such as carcass traits, maternal traits and feed efficiency) The ability to make more rapid progress for traits that are important to you, due to: · more accurate selection · easier identification of genetic outliers · the ability to propagate young animals with confidence earlier in their lives
In fact, GE-EPDs on unproven animals have the same amount of accuracy as if they had recorded 8-33 calves, depending on the trait. That’s valuable insight, offered regularly through the breed’s weekly national cattle evaluation at www.angus.org.
How do you know if EPDs are genomic-enhanced? Ask your breeder, refer to the registration paper, or look for the AGI GE-EPD logo, Angus GS GeneSeek or the HD50k or i50k by partner Zoetis.

This Angus Pathfinder Dam is the only fall-calving female in the sale and certainly holds her own in terms of phenotype. This elegant cow is very pretty through her neck and shoulders and smooth in her design. Behind her angular front one-third, she opens up into a tremendous rib cage with tons of capacity and a beautiful udder. She is made just like an Angus female is supposed to be. Records an average nursing ratio of 3@109. Maternal sisters sell as Lots 13 and 15. •

The sire of the lead lot in the bred heifer division, Discovery, was the lead off and $110,000 high selling bull of the 2013 Vintage Angus Ranch Bull Sale. His Zoetis 50K profile ranked him in the top 10% for CED, BW, WW, YW, Doc, CEM, Milk and CW. Discovery's dam is from the same cow family that produced the 2012 top selling bull at Vintage. Discovery offers a rare genetic package with moderate birth, extreme growth and elite carcass traits, so it is easy to see why his progeny are topping sales across the country…this daughter should follow that trend. Excellent calving-ease and carcass genetics from a dam who records 6@91 for BW, 3@115 for IMF and 3@102 for RE. The sire of Lot 65, SAV Privilege 3030, was selected by Vermilion Ranches as a $100,000 top-selling feature of the 2014 SAV Sale. His productive dam is a flush sister to SAV Resource, and his granddam, SAV Blackcap May 4136, has an unprecedented production record. • Bred AI 4/18/18 to Quaker Hill Rampage 0A36. Checked safe AI.
