Genetic Opportunity XXX • Saturday, September 6, 2014 • Hillsboro, Indiana

Dear Angus Friends,

A combined 180 years experience of raising Angus seedstock!

On behalf of the Grubbs, Craft and Stewart families, I want to thank you for reviewing our 30th Annual Genetic Opportunity Sale catalog. What a fantastic year 2014 has been for the beef cattle business! We’ve witnessed unprecedented high prices on all classes of cattle along with a wonderfully cool and wet summer that has been ideal “cattle weather.” We are all very excited about our 30th production sale, because it is an opportunity for us to showcase our commitment to offering superior genetics to other Angus breeders. I did a little research, and the three breeders presenting this 2014 offering have a combined 180 years experience of raising Angus seedstock. I think you would have to agree that these three firms have stood the test of time in our breeding programs. This year’s offering will include a select group of young cows sired by and bred back to some of the elite bulls in the Angus breed. There will be a top-notch group of bred heifers, also bred to some of the great bulls in the breed. And as always, we’ll be selling our very best 2014 heifer calves that will be both show heifer prospects and future donor candidates. Added features this year will be a couple of 2014-born herd bull prospects and an outstanding purebred Angus show steer for the 2015 show season. These three firms have always stressed balanced EPDs and flawless phenotype in our breeding programs. Numerous show winners and mothers and grandmothers of show winners at every level of competition have been sold through the sale ring at Genetic Opportunity. In addition, we’ve all produced our share of bull test station winners and high sellers as well as herd bulls for other breeders and A.I. stud bulls. Please feel free to call or visit any of our farms prior to sale time, and plan to be with us Saturday, September 6th to evaluate our offering and for some good “Angus Fellowship.” Regards,

Les Craft

Dear Angus Friends and Fellow Cattlemen: Welcome to the 30th Annual Genetic Opportunity Sale, one of the longest running production sales anywhere in the United States. The longevity of this sale is a testament to not only the quality of the cattle but more to the quality of the people involved with these breeding programs. It is my honor to once again be involved in their marketing. We are excited to bring you this outstanding offering in 2014. Grubbs Angus Farm and Les Craft Angus along with their sale guest, Stewart Select Angus, have again assembled a set that illustrates the result of their combined experience in the purebred seedstock industry, spanning over seventy years and three generations…and their passion for the Angus female. These breeders consistently bring forth their very best. While the offering has been weighted heavily to the side of open show and donor prospects in years past, the demand for bred females in recent Genetic Opportunity sales has led the group to increase the number in that division this year. They are sharing some of the very top producers and young females in their respective herds. The success that Genetic Opportunity customers have had with past investments is testament to the depth and quality present in past events, and this year is no exception. These cattle combine performance with excellent phenotype to become competitors at any level in the industry. The bottom line is: Genetic Opportunity cattle appreciate in value. The genetics and EPDs represented on both sides of these pedigrees are second to none. The Angus breed’s most popular sires are represented here as well as an exciting group of calves by the resident herd sires for each firm. Excellent show and donor prospects from power cow families and sired by breed-leading bulls will sell. Past Junior customers have claimed championship honors in show rings across the region and at every level of competition. Whether you select a proven female or an open prospect, you cannot go wrong. You will find an excellent set of replacement females—either sold alone or on the side of their dams. If you are searching for a young donor, don’t overlook the select set of bred heifers. I am excited to again be working with this progressive group of Angus breeders in the marketing of their cattle. Evaluate your own situation and breeding goals, and on Saturday, September 6th, take advantage of the knowledge and cutting-edge efforts of these breeders and their programs. Please join us Friday evening for food and refreshments while you preview the cattle. Feel free to contact me or any of the owners with your questions or comments. Sincerely,

SALE MANAGER Matt Sims

These two eye-catching daughters of HARB Stur-D are good fronted, long bodied and square hipped. It should come as no surprise that a maternal sister to these flush mates sold for $5,000 to Brett Foster of Indiana in last year’s sale. Their dam, Miranda 9032-1024, is one of the top donors at Les Craft Angus, both phenotypically and in terms of production. The phenomenal visual thickness, muscle and power of their sire, Stur-D, makes him the most unique Leachman Right Time son to date. Stur-D’s first progeny have exceeded all expectations and indicate that he will be a major force in the Angus breed. Stur-D is a powerfully thick, heavy muscled bull with massive length and dimension, complemented with breed character, high fertility and a gentle disposition. Of the 14 animals in Stur-D’s time-tested three-generation pedigree, nine are Pathfinders. He stems from a dam that continues her productive legacy at the age of 13 with a WR of 106 and a YR of 106.

This heifer calf should be packed with performance. Sired by the top bull from our 2012 calf crop that Select Sires purchased, this Niagara daughter puts it all together. Like most of the Niagara calves on our farm, she has a lot of middle and packs the weight on for being two months younger than most of our calves. • Sells open.
