Fellow Cattleman,

It is a privilege and an honor to write this letter addressing the Kearns Cattle Company 28th Annual Bull Sale! Over the past two years we have had the opportunity to work with the Kearns Family assisting in the marketing aspect of their program. There is no question that this is a family operation that is self-sufficient. The cattle business is their business! Extensive technology and advancements in genetics of the cowherd have allowed Tom and Zach to improve their product for their customers year after year! The cowherd that backs this offering has been carefully assembled for the key production traits, such as; structural integrity, mothering ability, fertility, disposition, and fleshing ability. Emphasis on cow families is extremely important to the future of Kearns Cattle Company, with proven females being placed into their intense embryo transfer program in order to generate many daughter to be placed back into the herd and full brothers to be offered to their bull customers in order to improve consistency, uniformity, and ultimately your bottom line! Strong emphasis is also placed on sire selection, with a strong AI program that utilizes many of the top AI sires in the country, and followed by an impressive on site bull battery! The bulls have been through a stringent selection process in order to make the catalog; as the bulls are culled for imperfections relating to feet and leg structure, performance, docility, and fertility. Kearns Cattle Company develops their bulls right at the ranch on a high roughage ration in order to allow the bulls to properly develop and grow without sacrificing their functionality of skeleton. The bulls are expected to gain 3+ lbs. a day on this ration. The Kearns Family offers very few females for sale, as a large number are retained in the constant quest to improve the cowherd. A select few females are hand selected and offered for sale each fall and marketed through The Event female sale the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Consider this your invitation to join the pre-sale preview and social from 1-5 PM CS on Monday the 27th of March. Then plan to join us for lunch, good conversation, and the 28th Annual Kearns Cattle Company Annual Bull Sale on Tuesday, March 28th! In the event that you cannot make the sale or have any questions please do not hesitate to contact any of the Cattle In Demand sale management team regarding the sale offering. Videos and sale order will be available online at CattleInDemand.com prior to the sale. Enjoy the Cattle,

LOT 1 - KCC1 DEFIANT 540D

EBS DREAM MOSAIC - DAM OF LOT 1 What a way to start off the 28th Annual Bull Sale! Without a doubt the stoutest and deepest set of bulls to sell to date, and lead off by a tremendous son of the great MR TR Hammer 308A. Rugged, masculine, and massive are some of best ways to describe this Purebred stud! Big footed, wide based, and extra three-dimensional in his muscle shape. What makes 540D so unique is his ability to combine this added power with an incredibly functional structural build, yet he still balances so well. If that isn’t enough to warrant herd bull candidacy, then take a look at the prolific and potent donor dam that stands behind him. EBS Dream Mosaic has made her mark and produced countless daughters that have been put back into production and sons that are working in herds across the country. Seeing is believing...there is no question that Defiant 540D is worth the drive to Rushville!

KEARNS CATTLE CO.

The Ebony Joy cow family is arguably one of the most popular cow lines within the Simmental breed because of the consistency levels that the females produce at. 541D is out of the famed 709T female that commanded $38,000 in The Chosen Few Sale at Janssen Farms in 2013. 709T has consistently produced females and bulls at the highest levels. A duo of full sisters to 541D have dominated the Texas major junior show circuit this spring, being named fall calf champion and reserve fall calf champion at the Fort Worth Stock Show and fall calf champion at the San Antonio Stock Show. This bull may very well be the stoutest and softest made bull of this mating. Study his structural correctness, flexibility, and added balance!

There is no question that this is one of our favorite Savage sons born to date! 4027 is great built, sound moving, thick ended, and wide topped. He excels from a performance standpoint and still offers added balance and eye-appeal. His first calf heifer dam is a striking Sitz Upward daughter. Certainly impressive for a first calf heifer to wean off a 784 lb. strapping bull calf! Be sure to check him out on the 28th!

This duo of full brothers are out of arguably one of the most dominating Simmental donors in recent years! The genetic influence of “Dolly” has been sought after by countless breeders throughout North America, because of the high level that she produces at, and the consistency that she offers! Last year alone, she produced four AI sires that have experienced heavy use from countless seedstock producers from every corner of the country. Carver, Classified, Cannon, and Certified are maternal brothers to this pair of Cowboy Up sons known as Dallas and Detroit! In The Event female sale this past November, a bred heifer by New Direction, out of “Dolly” commanded a valuation of $16,000. In the same sale a pick of the Dolly pregnancies commanded a record $26,000! Let this pair of brothers serve as the direct path to incorporate the influence of the great “Dolly” into your very own program! KEARNS CATTLE CO.

LOT 39 - KCC1 DOZER 4001D

4001D is one of the heaviest bulls in the offering! He made the trip to Denver and had many admirers in the Mile High! From his 85 lb. BW to 901 lb. WW, this stud tipped the scales with a 1400 lb. YW! True curve bending performance in the flesh, with off the charts scan data and a 43 cm scrotal measurement! Study the natural spring to his rib, the shape to his hip and stifle, and the low maintenance body type that he offers. MSF Journey was sampled on one of our very best Driver daughters, and we were pleased with the results to say the least! The 885Y donor has done an exceptional job, and a pair of daughters out of her were sold in The Event sale this past fall and created a lot of interest. One of those females happened to be a flush mate to these three studs! A Cowboy Cut daughter out of 885Y was also well received and had many admirers. The Journey sired half bloods, are smooth joined, long sided, and fundamentally correct, while maintaining stoutness and dimension of muscle. The influence of Driver in their lineage will help serve as the building blocks for the future!

TJ Big Image 503A was our selection from the Triangle J bull sale in 2014. Big Image is sensibly sized, wide in his basic build, thick topped, big hipped, and has a tremendous amount of shape to his stifle. When 503A was selected from the Triangle J sale he boasted an impressive 867 lb. adj. 205 weight! 4036D boasts an impressive 18.5 Adj. REA! He has passed along this same stoutness, and ruggedness to his progeny and we think you will agree, these are true beef bulls!

413D is another SAV Brilliance son that is out of a non-registered SimAngus female. Being that she isn’t registered through the Simmental Association, we are unable to proved registration papers on this bull, but rest assured that doesn’t affect his quality, power, or longevity of structure. This is a surefire calving ease bull that can experience heavy use on heifers with just a 65 lb. BW. He not only is a calving ease candidate, but he too performed and scanned well!

Selection Tools A GUIDE TO EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCES Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs):EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)

$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well- conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org.
