Dear Angus Friends and Cattlemen: Sale Manager Matt Sims On behalf of the Oklahoma Angus Association, welcome to the 20th Annual Oklahoma Angus (405) 641-6081 Gathering Sale, held Labor Day Weekend, Saturday, August 31, 2019, this year at the H2 Cattle matt@mcsauction.com Co. sale facility near Perkins. This sale is intended to provide a marketing outlet for the www.mcsauction.com incorporated membership of the Oklahoma Angus Association, and we encourage everyone to take advantage of what continues to be among the top state sales in the country. I am very excited about this 20th annual sale offering. Breeders who have attended past years’ Gathering sales have had the opportunity to see outstanding Angus cattle from herds throughout the state area. The 2019 offering consists of a young set of productive females backed by some of the most popular genetics in the breed. We have an outstanding offering of bred and open heifers along with an impressive group of spring pairs and some outstanding fall-calving heifers and cows as well as a top set of five commercial bred heifers. In my opinion, this 20th annual sale features the deepest set of Angus females ever assembled for this event in terms of combining phenotypic quality, numerical excellence and proven pedigrees and includes young females that excel in production traits as well as females to produce for the show ring. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Jimmy and Selena McGuire, Donnal Smith and their crew at South River Genetics for providing their facility and hosting this sale the past several years. However, in an effort to accommodate all regions in the state while keeping the sale centrally located, the board decided to move the sale to H2 Cattle Co. We want to thank the Hartley family for providing their facility to host this year’s sale. It is my pleasure to continue working with Oklahoma Angus breeders while coordinating this sale, and I am very pleased, as I know you will be, with the offering assembled for Saturday, August 31st. If you have any questions or if I may be of assistance prior to or at sale time, please give me a call. Sincerely, Matt C. Sims

HA Cowboy Up 5405 — sire of Lots 1 & 2

■ Sells open. As of July 24, 2019, when you search the Angus database for daughters of Cowboy Up, both parent and non-parent, 9009 is the only daughter that surfaces using her criteria for CED, BW, WW and YW. This performance giant not only has impressive figures, she also has exceptional phenotype. 9009 displays tremendous body type with a square hip, wide top and flawless structure. We believe this female has tremendous upside in producing high-end performance cattle, both bulls and females, that are the right size with exceptional fleshing ability. Ranks in the top 1% for WW, YW, CW and $W; top 4% for $F; top 10% for SC, Doc; top 20% for RE, $B and $C. Dam posts progeny ratios of 2@101 for WW, 1@106 for YW, 1@115 for RE. BW 75 lbs.

Sells open. A full sister to the feature lead live lot in the 2018 Bases Loaded Sale that commanded $40,000 for 1/2 interest, 9001 is a daughter of EXAR Barbara 3779, who is a maternal sister to the proven performance sire with style, EXAR Upshot 0562B. 3779 has amassed $53,500 in progeny sales to date. 9001 is built right from the ground up. She is sound in structure and super correct in her lines with added depth through the center portion of her rib cage, and she displays tremendous muscle shape and top when viewed from behind. To top it off, her strong EPD profile ranks in the upper echelon for calving ease and performance traits. Strong donor potential with a royal pedigree! Ranks in the top 3% for YW; top 4% for $F; top 10% for WW, $W, $B and $C; top 15% for CW; top 20% for CED and SC. Dam posts progeny ratios of 4@98 for BW, 4@102 for WW, 1@119 for IMF, 1@105 for RE. FALL YEARLING OPEN HEIFERS Lots 4–15

Lot 5 Spur Blackcap 8285

Lots 4 –8 2019 is the first time for Spur Ranch to offer their genetics through a Gathering Sale and one of the few times they have offered females from their registered herd. Lots 4 through 8 were selected by Clay Hartley, Jeff Owen and Matt Sims as the top five donor prospects from their fall replacement heifers. We feel that these females offer a combination of numeric and phenotypic quality along with excellent performance that will meet the needs of any herd.

Lot 13 was produced by a powerful donor who was the high selling feature lot of the 2015 J&J Back to School Sale. This heifer is halter broke and ready to go. She has already found her way to the backdrop, being named a division winner for Charley Johnson at the 2019 OJCA Summer Preview Show in Stillwater. The powerful donor dam combines the sire of champions, Dameron First Class, with EXAR Princess 6414, who is a direct daughter of Greens Princess 1012 and was a many-time show favorite and champion who sold for $78,000 to Brooklyn Bell, Oklahoma, in the 2006 EXG Big Event. 6414 was named Grand Champion Female at the 2007 Southwestern Livestock Exposition, Reserve Grand Champion at the 2007 National Western and 2007 Dixie National, Calf Champion at the 2006 American Royal and NAILE and Supreme Champion Female over all breeds at the 2007 Oklahoma Youth Expo and finished second for ROV Show Heifer of the Year and first for Junior Heifer Calf Champion of the Year for 2006–2007. Since that time, 6414 has followed in the footsteps of her famous dam by producing top sellers and champions for Finley Brothers and Express Ranches, as you will see in her descendants that sell as Lots 13 and 14. Ranks in the top 4% for $F; top 15% for WW; top 20% for $B; top 25% for YW.

American Angus Association Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) and $Value Indexes included in this catalog: PRODUCTION EPDs Calving Ease Direct (CED) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires. Docility (Doc), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized.

FOOT SCORE EPDs Claw Set EPD (Claw) is expressed in units of claw-set score, with a lower EPD being more favorable, indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal claw set. The ideal claw set is toes that are symmetrical, even and appropriately spaced. Foot Angle EPD (Angle) is expressed in units of foot-angle score, with a lower EPD being more favorable indicating a sire will produce progeny with more ideal foot angle. The ideal is a 45-degree angle at the pastern joint with appropriate toe length and heel depth.

MATERNAL EPDs Heifer Pregnancy (HP) is a selection tool to increase the probability or chance of a sire’s daughters becoming pregnant as first-calf heifers during a normal breeding season. A higher EPD is the more favorable direction and the EPD is reported in percentage units. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. Maternal Milk EPD (Milk) is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Mature Weight EPD (MW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughters of other sires.

CARCASS EPDs Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness

at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

$VALUE INDEXES $Value indexes, an economic selection index, allows multiple change in several different traits at once pertaining to a specific breeding objective. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M), an index expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences from conception to weaning with the underlying breeding objective assuming that individuals retain their own replacement females within herd and sell the rest of the cull female and all male progeny as feeder calves. The model assumes commercial producers will replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% of their breeding females in each subsequent generation. Traits included are as follows: calving ease direct, calving ease maternal, weaning weight, milk, heifer pregnancy, docility, mature cow weight, claw set and foot angle. Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index expressed in dollars per head, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from birth to weaning. The underlying objective being producers will retain 20% of the female progeny as replacements and sell the rest of the cull females and their male counterparts as feeder calves. Traits included are as follows (in no particular order): birth weight, weaning weight, milk, and mature cow weight. Feedlot Value ($F), an index expressed in dollars per head, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for postweaning feedlot merit compared to the progeny of other sires. The underlying objective assumes producers will retain ownership of cattle through the feedlot phase and sell fed cattle on a carcass weight basis, but with no consideration of premiums or discounts for quality and yield grade. Traits contributing directly to the index are as follows: yearling weight (gain), carcass weight and feed efficiency. Grid Value ($G), an index expressed in dollars per carcass, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. The underlying objective assumes producers will market cattle on an above-industry-average carcass grid. Traits included in the index are as follows (in no particular order): carcass weight, marbling, ribeye area, and fat. Beef Value ($B), a terminal index expressed in dollars per carcass, to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics for postweaning and carcass traits. This terminal index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase and market these animals on a carcass grid. Traits included in the index are as follows: yearling weight, dry-matter intake, marbling, carcass weight, ribeye area and fat. Combined Value ($C), expressed in dollars per head, is an index which includes all traits that make up both Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) and Beef Value ($B) with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and eventually sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid. Expected progeny differences (EPDs) directly influencing a combined index: calving ease direct (CED) and maternal (CEM), weaning weight (WW), yearling weight (YW), maternal milk (Milk), heifer pregnancy (HP), docility (DOC), mature cow weight (MW), foot angle (Angle), claw set (Claw), dry matter intake (DMI), marbling (Marb), carcass weight (CW), ribeye area (RE) and fat thickness (Fat).

With today’s technology, identify better animals earlier and reduce costly selection and breeding mistakes. The most successful cow-calf operations are built on disciplined breeding programs. DNA testing enables seedstock and commercial beef producers to make more informed decisions and capitalize on animals with superior genetic merit. Unlock greater profit potential through more dependable bull and replacement heifer selection, mating and marketing.
