Before we had EPD’s, a sharp eye was the best tool a cattleman had. A big-topped, thick bull increased dressing 731 BFCK CHEROKEE CNYN 4912 percent. An easy fleshing bull increased marbling. The Cattlemen’s Red & Black Angus Monday, March 10th, 2014 at 1pm Bull Sale Lincoln Cty Fairgrounds North Platte, NE Welcome to The Cattlemens Bull Sale, The writing of this catalog letter was always Dan’s job. He gave a summary of the year’s offering and a few of his philosophies for everyone to chew on. After going back and reading a couple of them I know we will never be able to replace his letters. To say Dan is missed is an understatement of the obvious. We are putting our best efforts to work every day to honor Dan and have every intention to continue his work in a way that would make him proud! It was always a goal of Dan’s to see his cattle excel in every aspect of the breed. In an effort to increase EPD accuracy on our herd sires SLGN with the cooperation of bull customer M. Lorenzen are in the process of conducting field research. Aligning two young SLGN herd sires with one of the Red Angus breeds highest EPD and highest accuracy bulls, Mission Statement. Sixty commercial Red Angus cows were randomly mated to SLGN Yardmaster and SLGN Yosemite as well as LJC Mission Statement in a blind study fashion under the supervision of the Audubon Manning Vet Clinic. The purpose of the test is to compare the data collected from these young sires against a high accuracy proven sire. On average the SLGN bred cattle are 5 lbs heavier at birth but they were also 66 lbs heavier at weaning. The next data will be yearling weights followed by carcass data collected when harvested.

This year’s offering has some of the best scan data and carcass merit we have ever had. The calves are sired by our young and exciting herd bulls. They are ready to go to work for you. We believe this group of bulls is the kind and type that reflect Dan’s vision for optimal commercial beef production. Videos of the bulls are available online at www.solutiongenetics.com Please join us for the sale on March 10th and come early for lunch at noon. Tess- Dam to Yardmaster
Yardmasters first calf crop came in 2013 and they have already been making a splash across the country. Yardmaster daughters sold in our fall female sale and averaged $8750. At the 2014 National Red Angus Show in Fort Worth, TX a Yardmaster daughter was name the Division II Champion Female and a Yardmaster son was the Reserve Division II Champion Bull. Yardmaster is putting a lot of volume, muscle and eye appeal into his calves. He works well on cows that need some moderation and move body. We have a lot more calves hitting the ground at home and man are they stand outs! Yardmaster semen in now on the open market and available through Solution Genetics.

This is an exciting bull from every perspective. He has a fresh, exciting pedigree, combining the $53,000 Yardmaster with the outcross Ravishing Everelda 20 donor. This bull is a maternal brother to Ravishing Bravo 142 who sold to Bradbury Land & Cattle last year for $8,500. Cowboys will appreciate the muscle and fleshing ability of this bull on sale day. He posted an IMF Ratio of 110. Keep his daughters because he is backed by the Everelda Entense and Bailey cow families! 4

Dad and I use to talk about how some day we were going to have cattle that were bred with the SLGN herd prefix top and bottom and they were going to be powerfully constructed, high volumed, structurally sound cattle that were desirable on and off the paper. American Way is the type and kind of bull that we were talking about. He reminds me of a combination of Yardmaster and Yosemite. This bull stands on a big foot, lots of bone, he has a ton of volume and the top shape and muscle that he has from behind is incredible. Lot 2’s dam is a power house of a cow. She sold as a bred heifer in our fall sale in 2009 to Arizona and when she calved I wish we would have taken a picture of her because she had a picture perfect udder and did a good job with her first calf. Since American Way was an ET calf he had no ratios for his WW and YW but if he did his growth EPDs would have increased. Lot 2 had a ADG of 4.92, almost 5 lbs a day! What I think is even more outstanding is the fact that American Way had an 18.09 REA and still maintained a 3.20 IMF. There are not many bulls that can have that much muscle and still be able to keep their marbling. This is the type of bull that is built to be able to produce replacement females or take his calves to the rail, either way they will excel! Frame 6.3

Heifer bull extraordinaire here, going back to a very maternal pedigree on the bottom side. We have never seen an Indeed daughter that doesn’t have a perfect udder. 328A is a moderate framed high capacity bull that will inject longevity and fertility into his daughters. This bulls dam had him as a first calf heifer. She is a maternal sister to Sakic and a paternal sister to Timberlake. Two well respected bulls that have created a lot of buzz in the Red Angus world. 72 lbs at birth and a -2.3 BW with a 1265 lb YW and a 83 YW EPD, this bull will let you rest easy through calving and then turn his calves into fast growing profit making machines. We believe a lot in our cow families and the bottom side of this pedigree is one of our top cow lines. The Sheba cow is currently 16 years young, she was flushed all last year and this year she has a Yosemite bull at her side. Lot 5 has a very maternal cow line on the bottom and a stout high performing sire on the top. A perfect combination. Frame 6.0 EPD Averages for Non Parents under 2 years of age:

This stout set of flush brothers combined the best of Yardmaster and Ginger. These bulls are long, muscular, and have plenty of center rib volume. Ginger is the full sister to the Genex sire, Roy Rogers, and each year she produces bulls that the cowboys find. This is your chance to turn out three full brothers!

This black hided bull has been an absolute truck from an early age. He has tremendous muscle in all the right places, solid depth of rib, and a great disposition. He could throw red or black calves but they will be good! He is a maternal brother to our outcross 16.25 Everelda 20 donor that has made a name for herself in a short time. Yosemite as a yearling
We are extremely excited about having SLGN Yosemite in our bull battery at SLGN. We sold him in our bull sale and showed him in 2012. His first calves hit the ground last year and we have a lot more on the ground this year. Don’t be surprised if we have a pen of Yosemite bulls in Denver for 2015. His calves are long spined, big topped, big footed and stout made. In our blind study the Yosemite calves are pounding the scales down with the highest weaning weights and I wouldn’t be surprised if they do as yearlings too. He works well on flatter made deep bodied cows that need to be pulled apart and given more muscle. We have used Yosemite on mature cows as well as first calf heifers and the calves come small headed, long and smooth jointed and usually weigh between 70 and 80 lbs. Yosemite semen is for sale and you can get it through Solution Genetics, Bovine Elite or Gene Source in Texas.

There are two times of the year I get really excited about. One of them is breeding season and the other one is sale season. That is when I know if our program and our matings are coming together and producing the kind of cattle that cattle producers need. Atlantis is one of the bulls in this catalog that tell me we are on track for producing the right kind. Not only is this bull heavy muscled, high volumed, big topped and smooth made but he also has a great set of EPDs and actual data to back him up. He has a WW Ratio of 108, a YW ratio of 114, a %IMF ratio of 105 and a REA ratio of 113! How many bulls do you know that can have a 16.85 REA and still maintain a 3.82 IMF? This bull has it all from strong maternal traits to carcass and growth. Take a look at his spread form birth to weaning! Atlantis is out of a first calf heifer who goes back to Rock Star 911U and a Norseman King x New Design 878 cow. That’s right the bottom side of this pedigree not only has some Canadian blood in it but the 5L Adina 893-4039 cow is a BLACK RED CARRIER. SLGN Yes I Am 190Y is a moderate framed deep bodied female that weighed 1100 at weaning time which means she weighed a calf off that was 65% of her weight. The sire, Yosemite, is a herd sire that we are getting very excited about. He sold in our 2012 Cattlemens Bull Sale to Duke Ranch in Texas. We showed Yosemite the following year and he was the Grand Champion Bull at the NAILE in Louisville and the Grand Champion bull at the Fort Worth Stock Show. There aren’t very many calves out of Yosemite on the ground yet but there will be in the next few years once everyone sees what his progeny can do. Yosemite calves are born very long and smooth and once they hit the ground they just explode with growth and performance. Don’t hold off on getting your hands on a Yosemite son, get ahead of the game and lock onto Atlantis. This bull has it all, growth, carcass, maternal, whatever you are looking to do with your cow herd you can do it with this one. We are retaining 50% semen interest. Frame 5.5 9

928 The first U.S. born calf crop of Cowboy Cut made a huge splash. Several daughters topped sales for breeders including: Solution 1428 Genetics at $20,000, $13,000 and $12,500, C-Bar in Kansas high 16.15 selling heifer at $10,500, Lautenschlager at Bet on Red’s at $7,400 and several others. The Cowboy heifer calves tore up the tanbark 3.81 in 2012 as the Reserve Grand Champion Female at the Iowa State Fair, Louisville and Denver was a Cowboy Cut daughter as well as the North Carolina State Fair Champion Female and the South Carolina State Fair Champion Female. Cowboy Cut also won the Jr... and Sr. Get of Sire at both Louisville and Denver. In 2013 a Cowboy Cut daughter was Reserve Grand at the South Dakota 33 0.16 0.07 State Fair and Louisville and Grand Champion in Fort Worth. Yosemite, a bull that sold in last years sale, was Grand Champion at the South Dakota State Fair, Louisville and Fort Worth. The 2012 & 2013 National Grand Champion Females in the Junior Show at Denver were Cowboy Cut daughters. All that in a first calf crop makes you wonder what is yet to come! Many noted Red Angus Breeders have said Cowboy Cut may be the next great female producer in the breed! The first daughters calved last spring and all reports are the udders are excellent and they are great mothers. His pedigree is stacked maternal, with some of the best females in Canada in his genes. We recommend Cowboy Cut for moderate, thick made females that need added length, structural correctness and maternal strength. Cowboy Cut semen is now on the open market. You can contact Solution Genetics to order your semen today!

331A is a bull that I would recommend for anyone looking to add some maternal traits back into their program without sacrificing growth. The dam to this bull was one of the best producing Persuasion females I had ever been around. She had a perfect udder and weaned off heavy calves. I really like this bull and I know he is only an April but I wouldn’t have put him on the sale if I didn’t think he was something special. You can use him as a heifer bull and he will produce performance oriented cattle that will be very efficient. Frame 5.9

2012 Grand Champion Pen of Three 13
The first big calf crop of Rock Star calves have solidified this bull as a true beef machine! He stamps his calves with the same bold features that he possesses, muscle, middle and moderation. His offspring come in an easy fleshing, eye appealing package that turns the heads of many good cattlemen. Rock Star is the sire of the 2012 National Western Grand Champion Pen of Three Bulls. They were a big attraction in the Yards in Denver and were praised by the judge for their uniformity, muscle and rib shape. The Rock Star bull calves are a stout set of bulls that have exceeded our expectations every step of the way. His outcross pedigree makes him a unique breeding piece for several breeders and his outstanding performance adds to the marketability of his offspring. His dam has a picture perfect udder and the Rock Star heifer calves were a big hit at the Red Legends 2012 sale in September as eight Rock Star females averaged $7,300. Now that Rock Star daughters are in production they are proving that Rock Star can produce very maternal brood cows too. The Rock Star daughters at SLGN weaned off the heaviest heifer and bull calf this year. After seeing the progeny in Denver, Genex has leased Latin America and South America semen rights. We suggest using Rock Star on bigger framed females that need to add muscle, width and dimension. The semen packages offered in this sale will be the only semen available for the Spring 2014 breeding season. Selling ten packages of ten units and ten packages of five units, high bidder has option to take as much as they like. Lot 23 is out of a first calf heifer and boy did she do a good job with him. He is a moderate framed heavy muscled bull that is loaded with performance. This bull has the pedigree that allows him to be very versatile. He can produce high quality females or high performing feed efficient feeder calves. Frame 5.2

He is only an April but he is ready to go to work! Usually we do not put April bulls on our sale but this year there were a couple stand outs that I thought just had to make the sale and this boy is one of them. Long bodied, big topped and stout made. Lot 25 is going to make his new owner a very happy person! His dam is a tremendous donor cow who just had a Yosemite heifer and if I had time I would take a picture of her so you could see how beautiful her udder is at 7 years old. We did not scan this bull because he is too young to get accurate data on him. Don’t let the scan data shy you away. This bull will have carcass merit. Frame 6.2

Glacier Marias was born 19 years ago and Blockana 692 was born 18 years ago but these genetics and this bull is right for the times! He is long, muscular, and weighs like a rock. Marias was made famous by his ultra-productive daughters and his very high marbling progeny. Blockana 692 was an ideal cow and her genetics are scattered throughout these pages. She has had a great impact on the Solution Genetics and Ravishing Reds cow herds. Keep every daughter out of this bull!

This year we have 3 tremendous Tiger sons to start our black line up. All 3 are out of first calf heifers and they are very impressive. Lot 39 is a powerfully constructed bull that has a ton of muscle and eye appeal. He scanned with a 14.3 REA and a 4.91 IMF, pretty impressive for a bull that I would consider using on heifers.

Stout, big boned, power house and female making machine are the first words that come to my mind when I think about this Tiger son. His dam was a first calf heifer and she did a really nice job with him. This bull scanned with a 15.8 REA and a 3.6 IMF, he is loaded with red meat! Lot 40 will add pounds to your next calf crop and you won’t want to let go of the replacement females.

This is our most impressive scan data bull in this offering. This bull has a REA of 16.2 and still maintained a %IMF of 6.25. It is not often that you can find a bull that has that kind of carcass data and combines that with the low birth high weaning AND looks this good. Lot 48 will make some knock out replacement heifers that will blow any cattlemen’s socks off and when you sell his feeders you can bet that buyer will be coming back next year for more easy feeding calves out of him.

Ranch Manager, Jarod McCaffree and Herd Consultant, Larry Garten have assembled an excellent herd of Red Angus and Sim-Red Angus Females that impress us more and more every time we visit the ranch. Their herd is comprised of moderate framed, big middled, thick ended cattle that are Phenotypically correct and able to thrive on the Flinthills of south central Kansas. The original base of the herd was purchased from Pelton Red Angus and consisted of several good Sim-Red Angus females. To add to their bull battery, Mann Ranch has purchased two very exciting bulls from Solution Genetics, SLGN Wide Load and SLGN Wide Open. Both bulls offer proven pedigrees of our top cow families and have done a great job of complimenting their cow herd. The yearling bulls were brought to Solution Genetics 11/16/13 and the 18-month olds were brought 9/25/13 and have been developed with our bulls on the same ration and same vet care. Take advantage of the opportunity to add some hybrid vigor to your program with this good set of Red Angus and Sim-Red Angus bulls!

Wideload X ¾ sim cow that Jarod calls the Jersey in that she has white around her nose like a lot of red sims do. That is the only comparison to a Jersey as this cow is powerful in her makeup, just like this son of hers. With input costs continuing to increase, wouldn’t it be nice to be able to feed a little less and keep those cattle in good rig? We are having a difficult time keeping Wideload from getting too heavy in the winter months after breeding season on prairie hay and a couple pounds of cubes. LG

Call the police as this one might cause a riot!! This mating absolutely works. We have had 2 Wideload X 7140 heifers that are smokin good. This is the first bull calf from this mating and lets just call him special. This boy has as much thickness and power as we have produced in a high % red angus.. Now I will admit he might not have the prettiest ear set like a lot of the Brown Vacation bred cattle, but lets admit it, we don’t eat ears. This ET bull has been a standout since birth. His dam is the Miss Aja cow at Mann Ranch that we fondly nicknamed Miss Piggy. Our embryologist said that she may be one of the best females of any breed that he has seen based on phenotype. Her breeder, commented that she could get fat on air. We have kept every female to date and now have 6 daughters that we adore. If you love thick, powerfully constructed bulls that come from a proven cow, this is him, LG

This ET bull is a Timberlake son out of the famed BJR Sheba 4X by Monu 4X. Heifer flush mates averaged over $10,000 in a previous Red Legends sale. Timberlake and his sire Indeed are known for siring some of the top females in Canada. With the added cow power of Sheba 4X, daughters of this moderate framed, nicely patterned bull should be awesome. LG

This bull is a carrier of the OS defect. Use him to sire top 2.17 performing feeder calves! 0.26 801

This is a bull that I am excited to see how he turns out for his new owner. He has muscle, power, structural correctness and maternal traits bred into him. We do not baby our bulls, if they are younger they still get put into the same pen as the January bulls and hold their ground at the feed bunk. Don’t hold it against him that he is just a March, this bull will be able to hold his own at breeding time. Frame 5.2 8

I would recommend using this bull on mature cows.

A deep sided moderate framed super low maintenance bull to start off our Smasher sired lots. We purchased Smasher in 2011 to use as a heifer bull. After using him for one year on our heifers we decided to use him on some of our cows that needed a little more maternal injected into them without losing muscle and growth. I highly recommend using Lot 27 on heifers. You will not have a worry in the world calving them out. Frame 5.8

(at least we don’t at Mann Ranch) Dam is a ¼ sim cow out of Brown Vacation and is perfect sized with an ideal udder. ET calves from a Canadian flush purchase. Sired by Cash, a Canadian bull known for extreme early growth (WW epd of 81, top BW 76 WW 604 YW SC 41.5 FRAME 6.5 2%), extreme low maintenance (ME epd -12, top 5%) and rib eye area (0.73, top 2%). Cash has sired many champions in the states and Canada including Grand Champion female in Denver. Their dam is the Marcie 50N cow that was the pick of the Longshore herd in Canada by Soo-Lne Angus and carries a 104.4 MPPA.
