BEHIND THE SCENES WITH TRAIL BLAZERS TELEVISION ANALYST

LAMAR HURD DO YOU HAVE ANY RITUALS OR SUPERSTITIONS ON A GAME DAY? I have no superstitions, but in terms of rituals, there are a few things I try to accomplish each game day: get a workout in, shave, spend about 1 hour reviewing game notes or new updates relevant to the game, and if it’s a home game I typically listen to Travis & Chad on 620am NBC Sports Northwest Rip City radio on the way to the arena. HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A TRAIL BLAZERS HOME GAME? Once I’m in the arena, I connect with the opposing team’s broadcasters to get an update on their team (many of them do the same with us Trail Blazers broadcasters), as well as listen to Terry Stotts and/or the opposing coach speak to the media before the game; Coach Stotts speaks an hour and 45 minutes prior to tipoff, and the opposing coach speaks 90 minutes prior 18

to tipoff. After that, I go to the dining room to have dinner with colleagues. Once every few home games, I, like our other broadcasters, lead a chalk talk discussion with sponsors of the Trail Blazers for about 15 minutes prior to the start of our pre-game show (which starts 30 minutes prior to tipoff). HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A TRAIL BLAZERS ROAD TRIP? I like to have my bags packed the afternoon prior to the plane leaving, in order to avoid rush-packing the day of departure and accidentally forgetting an important item. I put all my suits in a carry-on hang bag and then hang it up in the plane; I put my laptop and also any snacks in my Trail Blazers backpack and that sits in the seat next to me; I put my work hand bag in the seat next to me, and as long as it’s a trip of more than one game, I check one bigger suitcase (that goes under the plane) that holds all of my clothes and toiletries.

TRAIL BLAZERS GAME PROGRAM • BROADCASTER FEATURE

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ARENA IN THE NBA? (BESIDES THE MODA CENTER, OF COURSE) Phillips Arena in Atlanta—the vibe is energetic, they have one of the NBA’s best DJ’s, and the arena is connected to a mall-like large food court and also to the CNN Center…so it provides a unique atmosphere. ARE THERE ANY PLACES ON THE ROAD THAT YOU FREQUENT? RESTAURANTS, QUIRKY SHOPS, ETC? Not really—I’m a home body at home, and a hotel body (is that a thing?) on the road. However, this past December at one of our stops, one of our interns found the best cheesecake ever at a bakery and bought some for me—and since cheesecake and red-velvet cakes are my favorite dessert, I will be finding out the exact location our intern went to, and I’ll be going there myself in the future. WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO GET INTO BROADCASTING? WAS THE NBA ALWAYS THE GOAL? I knew in middle school that I wanted to get into broadcasting, and the specific goal at that time was being on Inside the NBA, the TNT studio show. This goal was inspired by Kenny Smith; since I grew up in Houston, TX watching him play for the Rockets and then transition into broadcasting (where he works on Inside the NBA), I was able to see how much fun it appeared he was having in the role. In my broadcasting career, I’ve had a great time covering both college and the NBA – a big part of my enjoyment comes from who I work with, and I’ve been very blessed to have wonderful colleagues at each place I’ve worked.

also developing deeper relationships with people who represent Rip City. One of the greatest responsibilities of my job is using my platform to positively impact others’ lives in some way – better knowing the people I come across improves my chances of achieving that. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO GET INTO SPORTS BROADCASTING? In order to get into broadcasting, you may have to dedicate many years of your life prior to landing an opportunity—be willing to go the extra mile. There are millions of people who want the same broadcasting job you want, so make sure that there’s something that separates you from everyone else. Allow your talent to speak for you, and prepare to use your status on television for something bigger than yourself. Once you’re in, you have to be able to perform— since it’s a very public job, along the way some people will like you and some people won’t. You can’t get too high or too low – always be honest with yourself and be accountable. Improve upon your weaknesses, know your strengths. Have a circle of influence that you can trust to give you critical, non-emotional feedback. Don’t get in the way of the action you’re covering; rather, accentuate it. You have an obligation to the fans and to the competitors you cover to do your best for them each time you’re on air. ◆

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU FEEL YOU’VE IMPROVED ON SINCE JOINING THE TRAIL BLAZERS BROADCAST TEAM? The main two things I feel I’ve improved upon is understanding how my producer/director/play by play/etc. like to do their jobs (in turn, that helps me know how I may better do my job), and 19

The Trail Blazers are dedicated to positively impacting the lives of children and families who have been historically underserved, where they live, learn and play. We support children and families in our region by providing resources to high quality, impactful nonprofit organizations providing critical services in Oregon and SW Washington. Throughout the 2016-17 season, Trail Blazers Inc. & Trail Blazers Foundation successfully gave $1.59 million of in-kind donations and $950,501 in grant dollars to local communities.

The Trail Blazers believe our home court extends far beyond the arena and everything we do in our lives makes an impact. We encourage fans to join us in our efforts to protect our planet and our community to ensure a brighter future for generations to come.

The Trail Blazers strive to ensure that every child has the opportunity to graduate from high school. We support youth in hitting the key benchmarks that ensure this achievement through their education.

The Trail Blazers work to create opportunities where youth are active every day, have access to learn and play basketball, and have positive coaches in their lives.
