This was Kerry’s third Munster derby for the season, concluding the first round of fixtures. Billy Dennehy, the Kerry manager, was pleased to have a nearly fully fit squad to choose from, which allowed for competition amongst the players. Although Kerry had narrowly missed out on three points in their previous game against Finn Harps, they gained confidence from the game, which they hoped would carry them through to their game against Waterford. Waterford FC had won three out of their last four games, including a 7-1 win over Kerry’s previous opposition. Before kick-off, a minute of applause was held for Craig Breen, a Waterford native with connections to Kerry, who tragically passed away during a pre-event test for the Croatia Rally. Waterford dominated possession in the first half, with a barrage of corners, but Kerry held strong with an excellent defensive performance. Although Kerry struggled to create chances of their own, they managed to go into halftime at 0-0. In the second half, Kerry had their first real chance with a long-range effort from Leo Gaxha, but Waterford continued to pressure heavily. Eventually, Ronan Coughlan headed home a corner to put the hosts ahead. Kerry remained positive and nearly scored on a counterattack, but Waterford’s defense held strong. Despite the 1-0 loss, Kerry can be proud of their solid defensive performance and will look to bounce back in their next game against league leaders Galway United. photos credit to Adam Kowalczyk.
