Parallèlement à de multiples lectures sur la Première guerre mondiale, j’ai effectué des recherches sur le journal de marche du 158e régiment d’infanterie de mon grand père, Adrien Blanc. J’ai alors écrit une suite musicale pour chacun des faits marquants du conflit, en respectant essentiellement la chronologie événementielle. Depuis la création du spectacle, la composition musicale s’est enrichie avec l’interprétation des artistes qui amène une dimension universelle au conflit. L’apport des textes de combattants, le climat des images projetées et l’univers gestuel donnent une nouvelle expression poignante à cette tragédie où quelque 20 millions de combattants de toutes nationalités ont perdu le meilleur de leur jeunesse ou de leur vie. À travers cette proposition artistique et les rencontres avec le public, je partage des aspects historiques de la Grande Guerre qui ont touché l’histoire de mon grand-père. Je suis ravi que ce projet se soit concrétisé. Il me permet de garder un lien avec lui. Avec l’équipe artistique, nous perpétuons le souvenir. MICHEL BLANC, compositeur.

Along with various readings on World War I, I have done some researches on the walking diary of the 158th infantry regiment of my grandfather Adrien Blanc. About this subject, I have composed a musical suite for each memorable acts of the conflict, by mainly respecting the chronology of the event. Since the creation of the spectacle, the musical composition has been enriched with the interpretation of the artists, bringing a more general dimension of the conflict. The texts of the fighters, the atmosphere of moving images as well as the gestural universe bring a new poignant expression to this tragedy in which some 20 million fighters of any nationalities lost the best of their youth or their life. Through this artistic project and the meeting with the public, I share historic aspects of the Great War which affected the life story of my grandfather. I am delighted with the realization of this idea. It allows me to keep a link with him. With the artistic team, we perpetuate the remembrance. MICHEL BLANC, composer.

Dès la première écoute de l’album de Michel Blanc*, j’ai ressenti une émotion forte et un enchaînement d’images commença à défiler dans mon esprit, en accord avec les différents tableaux musicaux. Comme une évidence, j’avais là le fil pour enfin mettre en scène cette période sombre de l’Histoire marquée à jamais dans l’inconscient collectif. La densité de la musique imposait une sobriété dans le propos visuel pour permettre au public de se plonger pleinement dans cet univers sonore. Loin d’un spectacle historique ou didactique autour des horreurs de la guerre, mon choix se portait sur une évocation poétique et une esthétique contemporaine et brute. 10
Un acteur incarne le Poilu, qui lit des bribes de lettres du front. Brèves apparitions d’une humanité vite happée par la mise en abyme de la folie guerrière. Les moments clés de la guerre, ces onze tableaux, dont le découpage suit la composition de la musique originale, se matérialisent au travers d’un théâtre d’ombres. Outre le soldat, il y a la fiancée et l’anonyme, un ballet de figures en qui chacun peut reconnaître les siens. Et puis un enchevêtrement d’impalpables projections construit un décor expressionniste qui cerne le spectateur, diapositives mouvantes, objets projetés, matières soumises au vent des champs de bataille… *Album paru sur le label D’autres cordes.

At the first listening of Michel Blanc’s album, I felt a powerful emotion, a link of images were in my mind, in harmony with the different musical scenes. As evidence, I had the basic outline to stage this somber period of the history, which affected the collective unconscious. The strength of the music required a sobriety in the visual subject in order to immerse the public into this sound universe. I didn’t want to make an historic or didactic show (around the horrors of the war) and I decided to evocate this period in a poetic, contemporary and esthetic way. The actor playing the “Poilu” reads fragments of letters of the front. Short appearances of humanity, before this one will be devastated by war madness. The key moments of the war, these eleven scenes, respect the original musical composition, and are materialized through a shadow theater. Besides the soldier, there is a fiancée and an unknown person: a ballet of faces in which each of us can recognize his own. The expressionistic scenery is made with a combination of impalpable projections (moving images/slides, projection of object and materials moved by the battlefields wind) which surrounds the spectator. *Album published by D’autres cordes.
