PLAY POKER 101

KNOW WHEN TO HOLD‘EM Words: Adam Sullivan  Photos: Zach Cordner

ESCAPE

23

POKER IS PERHAPS THE CLASSIC AMERICAN CARD GAME. Played everywhere from massive casinos to dorm rooms and dining rooms in every state, it’s become a part of who we are. In fact, it’s so ingrained into our culture that we use its terminology in everyday life—often without even realizing it. If you don’t believe me, I’ll just lay all my cards on the table. And if you still don’t believe me, well, that’s just a raw deal. I’ve got one more, but it’s my ace in the hole, so I’m saving it for the very end. Despite being prototypically American, some people claim that Poker’s roots can be traced back to a Chinese tile game in the 1,100s, and others believe it originated from a Persian card game called “As Nas” in the 16th century. A version called “Poque” was also played in France at the time, as was a game called “Pochen” in Germany. It was the French colonists who brought the game to America in the first place. Starting in New Orleans, the game headed up the Mississippi River—an apt metaphor for those early-American frontiersmen who lived their lives exploring a world where untold bounty was just over every hill. #HARRAHSSOCAL

24

HOW TO PLAY At Harrah’s Resort SoCal, the name of the game is Texas Hold’em. In it’s simplest form, Texas Hold’em is this: Everyone gets two cards. Then five cards are dealt into the middle for everyone to use. First three cards are called “the flop,” then one (“the Turn”), then a final one (“the River”). From there, you must construct the best possible hand out of your two “pocket cards,” and the five “community cards” on the table. On a typical night, Harrah’s Resort SoCal boasts up to eight live tables and can hold as many as 25 for special occasions. A “live table” is one where you sit down and play against three to eight other players, rather than against a dealer or a video machine. HOW TO BEHAVE If you’re not already playing Poker on a reg ular basis, make sure you understand the unspoken r ules as well, so you don’t make any rookie mistakes. This is also the way to have the most fun once you do sit down.

Be Clear: Above all else, you want to be crystal clear with what you do. Whether it’s call, raise or fold—speaking clearly prevents the game from slowing down. Keep Quiet: This may seem like it contradicts the previous tip, but it only really refers to talking about the game. Poker is in the head as much as it is on the felt, so calling out hands—even the obvious ones—makes you the polar opposite of the life of the party.

“At Harrah’s Resort SoCal, the name of the game is Texas Hold’em.”

No Devices: Unless it’s a pacemaker, put the devices away. In fact, consider that a general rule for life. If there’s someone to talk to in person, do that.

HOW TO BET The general idea is that you’re trying to predict what the other players are holding, and bet accordingly. Betting in Texas Hold’em has four rounds: PRE-FLOP: Players bet on the strength of their two pocket cards alone. FLOP: Your pocket cards plus three common cards. TURN: Pocket cards plus four common cards. RIVER: Pocket cards plus all five common cards.

So even if you’re a first-timer, and Poker seemed intimidating at the beginning of this article, you’re now armed with everything you need to have a great time. You understand the rules, and know how to behave, so all you need is to brush your teeth—because when you pull up a chair and slide your chips across the crisp felt of the table, your poker face will be a big, toothy smile.

IT’S NOT OFTEN YOU FIND A HOTEL that puts your health first. Sure, comfort, luxury and convenience are high on the checklist, but for the most part, a room is a room, right? Wrong. Here at Harrah’s Resort SoCal, we listened to our guests and found some unique ways to make your stay feel more like home. We’re thrilled to unveil our latest Hotel upgrade: 22 wellness rooms that offer fresh features for a customizable guest experience. A full year in the making, we didn’t just change some sheets and slap on a new coat of paint. To get these rooms up to our standards of excellence, we went the extra mile to make them look and feel unique. These rooms are really special. “Our new

This One’s For The Ladies FOLLOW OUR ITINERARY FOR THE ULTIMATE GIRLS’ WEEKEND GETAWAY Words: Robyn Lass  Photos: Zach Cordner

Pack your bags. Invite the girls. And head out to Harrah’s Resort SoCal. From sun up to sun down, our ultimate Girls’ Weekend Getaway guide captures all the best ways for you and your ladies to relax, revive and rev up.

LET THE FIESTA BEGIN Check-in at the Hotel Lobby starts at 4pm. Get here early so you can get checked in and kick off your weekend of fun. Once your group is registered and ready to go, start your fiesta off with some refreshing margaritas plus a side of chips and our signature Guacamole Molcajete on the ‘ritas Cantina patio. Sitting outside, you can watch the sun set behind the mountains, taking in the gorgeous golden glow as you plan your evening. It’s worth mentioning that no matter what time of year you book your trip, always pack your bikini. With an average of 258 days of sunshine per year, Valley Center truly is a SoCal hotspot. Plus, with nine hot tubs you can always enjoy your pre-game beverage with some bubbles.

Whether you want a head-totoe treatment, or just a fresh coat of paint on your toes— our full-service spa will treat you right.

PAMPERING PLEASE You’ve had a long week. You deserve a little pre-party primping and pampering. The Spa at Harrah’s is the perfect place to start. Whether you want a head-to-toe treatment, or just a fresh coat of paint on your toes—our full-service spa will treat you right. Massages, facials and of course mani-pedis are all excellent ways to feel refreshed for the fun ahead. If you can’t all get your treatments together, take some time to chill in our relaxation lounge while sipping some tea. Or step in to the steam room or dry sauna for a little pre-game detox. Take your time. This is your chance to unwind before things wind up! HARRAHSSOCAL.COM

38

GET YOUR GAME FACE ON Is your group of girls good at craps? Are you better at doubling down or bluffing? Since you’re here, we recommend taking in the full gaming experience. With 68 Vegas-style table games, everyone in your group can find their favorite game of chance. Plus, our dealers are always willing to give newbies tutorials to help you play like a pro. We also have approximately 1,700 slot machines, so there really is a way for everyone in your group to play. Of course, if gaming isn’t your thing, you can always kick back at Spiked and sample one of our handcrafted cocktails while your friends dance with lady luck.

LET THEM EAT CAKE (OR SUSHI) Finding the perfect place for dinner can be tough with a group. Not at Harrah’s Resort SoCal. Our Buffet is the perfect place for you and your ladies to feed yourselves, and then come back for more. With fresh rolled sushi, authentic Sicilian style pizza, comfort food like mom (or you) used to make and a dessert bar that won’t quit—this is the perfect place to please even the pickiest eaters. Keep in mind that reservations aren’t available. Once you’re in, be sure to save room for dessert. Seriously, we can’t mention it enough. From fresh baked pastries to our exclusive gelato recipes, you will kick yourself tomorrow if you skip this section. ESCAPE

If you’re an early riser, or you want to work off some of those calories from the night before, our fitness room is fully equipped and opens at 9am. If you want to grab a bite to eat before you hit the road home, check out The Café for a sit-down, home-style breakfast. For those who like to grab and go, Starbucks is conveniently located adjacent to the casino floor—perfect for swinging by and getting fueled up before you say your goodbyes and head back to reality.
